the antithesis.

Technology has been advancing at a breakneck pace in the 20th and 21st century. This sets off a vicious cycle of an increasingly rapid pace of life in the society today, where Singapore is of no exception. The Pace of Life project, conducted by Richard Wiseman and the British Council, revealed Singapore to be one of the countries with the fastest pace of life.

This exhausting fast pace of life in Singapore had caused many lifestyles to be hectic and stressful, spiraling to social issues such as the negligence of relationships with family and peers, including adverse effects on health.

the antithesis | year two

Designed based on its genius loci of the Keppel Terminal, the Antithesis is a 12-storey residential building that aims to mitigate this issue by adopting a “greenery at the doorstep” concept. The project introduces sky terraces with communal spaces and integrated recreational facilities into the design so as to bring about opportunities for communal interaction, in hopes to slow down the pace of life.

Holland Village is known to be a popular nightlife area for the younger generation due to the plethora of bars. However, during daytime in Holland Village, majority of the people in Holland Village are comprised of the senior generation. That said, many of these stay-alone seniors lived a mundane and sedentary lifestyle in Holland Village, usually reading the newspaper and hanging out at the hawker centre. This sense of social isolation therefore dulls the spirit in Holland Village during the day.

This project studies the typical office typology, tackling the rising concerns of workplace inactivity that leads to lower work productivity. It incorporates public wellness spaces which are catered for both office workers and the public, in hopes to draw in the younger generation during the day. This creates opportunities for producers and consumers to connect through these wellness amenities.

By offering connectivity from one wellness space to another throughout the entire building in the form of continuous ramps, it promotes physical mobility as the ramps encourages users to walk more. Through this process, opportunities for social interaction between the employees and the public are more likely to occur. By increasing work productivity and enhancing the quality of life for the public, the project aims to revitalise the isolated and dull spirit of Holland Village during the day.

indoor gymnasium.

Wellness spaces such as the indoor gymnasium are designed to coexist with the co-working spaces within the office building, housed within grand double volume spaces that overlooks the view of Holland Village. These wellness facilities aims to draw the public into the building, promoting not just a healthy lifestyle but also reviving the spirit of Holland Village throughout the day.

Instead of being separated into individual cubicles, the office spaces are designed with an open concept to facilitate group discussions and presentations among employees. This enables information to be passed on efficiently, boosting workplace productivity and humanising the working environment for employees.

Visitors will be greeted with a grand atrium as they stepped into the building. This atrium serves as an entrance foyer, providing opportunities for visitors to network and meet new people, be it amongst colleagues or interacting with the public.

expiration; timber Timber, is an organic material that deteriorates and expires with the passage of time. The deterioration becomes rapid in the presence of certain weather conditions such as wind and moisture from rain.

Decomposition and decay in timber is often viewed in a negative light and is associated with death. However, the decomposition and decay are vital processes in the functioning of ecosystems and plays an essential role in breaking down organic matter, recycling it to make it available for new organisms such as fungi to utilize.

By studying the conditions of fungal growth, the structural modules were then designed with these factors in mind, such that the components of the modules are arranged to maximise the growth of fungi and hence facilitating the decomposition process.

The design intent is to build a tower which tells a story about the natural process of decomposition and the expiration of timber, so as to provide a renewed form of appreciation for the importance of decomposition to encourage people to protect and sustain ecosystems. The project aims to display the material’s ability to respond to its surrounding environmental changes i.e. rain.

To build a cable stayed structure that cantilevers with additional load bearing capacity (at least 3 can drinks) over a clear distance of 300mm.

The structure was designed such that the mast and the deck are of completely separate components. It consists of 2 curved members acting as the mast structure supporting the cantilevered deck with a pivot. The load of the deck will then be supported by an array of dowels, which will be tied back to the mast structure through a series of cables.

With the absence of load on the cantilevered deck, the entire structure will rock backwards due to the curvature and weight of the mast. However, when load is imposed onto the deck, the structure will rock forward towards the direction of load, mimicking how a typical rocking chair will function. Similar to Calatrava’s Alamillo Bridge, the cables are tied such that it fans out as it joins from the pylon to the deck.

This studio interrogates the boundaries of environment, climate and architecture through the specifics of the envelope. It investigates the gradient of atmospheric conditions between interior and exterior, forms of conditioning and the design of climate in an expansive form – including air, breeze, rain, dust, smell, and other contaminants.

The studio aims to expand representational and process methodologies to incorporate the invisible conditions of the atmosphere as a design medium that impacts the architecture of the built environment.

the parasite; narrative The idea behind the Parasite was inspired by the growth behaviour of this particular plant species, ficus pumila. Typically grown on the surface of RC columns of pedestrian overhead bridges in Singapore to soften the structure visually, the ficus pumila consists of aerial roots that are developed at the nodes of its branches.

These roots secretes a sticky substance which enables the plant to latch itself on any substrate or surfaces. That being said, ficus pumila on its own, does not have a fixed structure. What it does to attain its structure, is by latching onto surfaces. Needless to say, without the presence of these surfaces, the ficus pumila will not be able to sustain itself.

It is given that an RC wall, for instance, does not have any nutrients which are in any way beneficial to the growth of ficus pumila. However, the ficus pumila does in fact depend a lot on the RC wall for structural support, and because of its rhizomatic growth behaviour, it colonizes any voids present on the surface.

For the Parasite, rather than defining “parasite” as a factual term, we wanted to define parasite in terms of dependency and interrelationship through imbalances, where the plant is dependent on the host to survive.

an art gallery; concept For this module, we have envisioned the art gallery to be comprised of floating volumes interconnected by staircases. These volumes are varied in sizes to create a sense of hierarchy. The bigger volumes houses the important and main spaces such as the forum and art galleries.

Lost spaces are the surface parking lots that ring the urban core ... and server the connection between the commercial centre and residential areas.”

the whampoa hub; activating anti-spaces of whampoa In Whampoa, it is relatively lively in localised areas such as the Whampoa Makan Place, Market and the Community Club. However, beyond these crowds lies the many traces of lost spaces in the form of carparks in Whampoa, be it surface carparks or multi-storey carparks.

With the rise of automobiles, many changes were made to land use to facilitate the rapid advancements in technology. This results in the loss of values that were previously associated with urban open spaces. That being said, these mono-functional parking spaces had evidently became voids in the urban fabric, hence perceived to be anti-spaces that breaks the continuity of the urban form in Whampoa, detaching it from the larger fabric of streets and shophouses.

In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic had since further altered how people perceive public spaces as sick, dirty or unsafe. This therefore begin to shape the urban fabric in Whampoa to become increasingly monotonous.

The Whampoa Hub aims to be one that is multi-functional where the two different functions, which is the carpark and healthy building, can co-exist to not only revitalize the anti-spaces in Whampoa but also to promote a healing environment in times of the ongoing pandemic.

reimagining mscp typology; utilitarian to desirable spaces By studying the conventional multi-storey carpark (MSCP) typology, certain unique qualities inherent in a MSCP i.e. split-levels, circulation ramps and sense of horizontality and linearity, could potentially be reinformed and reinterpreted in the design proposal to transform a carpark from a highly utilitarian space, to one that is desirable in terms of programmes and spatial comfort.

Further to the aforesaid, environmental and spatial conditions such as ventilation and access to daylighting were some of the key considerations to create a new form of carpark typology. In the Whampoa hub, the carpark spaces are humanised such that carpark lots are segregated into smaller units to facilitate better ventilation and daylighting.

In addition, the Whampoa Hub also serves as an extension of the adjacent park connector (PCN) along Whampoa River. Jogging/cycling tracks are incorporated to connect the PCN into the building, where the new carpark typology would include not just carpark lots, but also bicycle docking areas as well as cycling and jogging tracks which would run vertically throughout the building’s core.

more than laundry Due to land scarcity in Singapore, HDB flats were designed to optimise the efficiency of spatial usage with minimal costs. With that said, the planning and design for a housing unit had always been focused on providing the minimum area of space required by the occupant(s).

Based on our site observations at Jalan Tenteram, we have noticed that there was a row of laundry racks provided along the back corridors of the one-room and two-room HDB units. However, instead of the laundry racks being used to dry clothes, some of these racks were being utilised against its purpose as ad hoc storage and resting spaces.

Owners living in these small apartment units had said to encounter issues such as accumulated clutter and had faced troubles in seeking for storage spaces in the house. The issue of cluttering then led on to another where owners lack comfortable resting spaces within the house.

Drawing inspiration from the existing laundry racks, our project aims to explore the possibilities of mundane household furnitures as a prototype that is multi-functional and also effective in benefiting a larger community, that is to promote social congregation in these back corridors which are often forgotten and isolated.

Furthermore, we wanted to incentivise the usage of this space such that it is not confined to just human usage, but also a favourable space for stray cats to roam about in the premises.

Similar to the existing laundry rack, the structure of each module in our prototype embodies a linear language. Each module is constructed out of timber frames and trellis, topped with a glass roof. The timber trellis are structural and ensures privacy for the users.

Variations were then created to the spatial configurations within each module, allowing different arrangements of space and functions. Depending on the owner, some of these private modules could have fewer storage spaces which thereafter allows room for additional privatised resting areas. In addition, the laundry racks can also be demountable, converting into a hammock resting space.

Another feature we have included into our prototype is convertibility. A series of L-shaped members are connected to the structural trellis with a fulcrum (dotted in red). This allows the simple bench to be converted to a lounge seating, storage or planter spaces when rotated at various angles. Similarly, a makeshift table can be extended from the structural trellis with a pulling motion, similar to the foldable tray tables installed in aircrafts.

In this studio, our aim was to generate atmospheres and material assemblages through the iterative employment of surfaces, lines and bits, assemblages performing two functions: the constitution and dissolution of an envelope; the constitution and dissolution of a structure.

How to define an architecture of atmospheres without treating them as things? We are looking for a non-trivial spatial “Continuity” and to decide between: hard and soft separation from the surrounding; active and direct (technological) and/or passive (material) transformation/augmentation.

To Educate; Since not many had even known the existence of these species, the intervention externalises the behavioural process of these endangered species, providing educational values for the public to learn more aboout them through an intimate and artistic context, even if it is as simple as moving around within their habitats, while maintaining healthy boundaries.

To Make; Given that Bras Basah is a well-known arts district, the project aims to restore the diluted arts scene in this precint by connecting the NAFA Campuses. Shaped like a 3-legged octopus, the central capsule houses the naturally ventilated studios and makerspaces, which branches out to bridge the NAFA campuses together, while interweaving into the animals habitats, while working with the new masterplan designed as a studio.

These bridging, transitionary spaces serves as gallery walks that showcases students’ works, or potentially being used as seasonal exhibition or pop up spaces for larger scale installations.

To Propogate; The intervention focuses on conserving 3 types of endangered specties: the Sunda Pangolins, Asian Softshell Turtles and the Malayan Colugos. It provides ecological spaces in the urban environment that provides care for these species, allowing them to propagate safely before releasing them back into the wild, repopulating the ecosystem.

Collectively as a studio, Bras Basah had been repurposed into a testing site that restores ecology (i.e. water, flora and fauna, animals). In a way, the site becomes one that supports land ethic, valuing all forms of life on Earth.

During these 6 months of the Architectural Internship Program (AIP) with SOLID Architects LLP, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience and there were plenty of takeaways from this internship. At SOLID, my colleagues were very welcoming and respectful towards me, helping me warm up to everyone by playing board games together on my first day. I was also treated equally as a full-timer and not just an intern, which I greatly appreciate as this has allowed me to push my boundaries rather than staying in the stereotypical “intern’s comfort bubble”. The working environment was also very inclusive, and my colleagues were all very open to help whenever I had any questions. On top of that, my bosses (Ker How, Jing Feng and Zhong Yi) also understood my commitments in school since I also had assignments to complete and classes to attend for AR5601, Urban Design Theory and Praxis.

In SOLID, we also have this shadow system where we assist another colleague’s project in the event when they are unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances. That said, I was the shadow for 4 other projects: 146 Thomson Green, The Nexus, 6 Claymore Hill, and 106 Towner Road. With this shadow system in place, there were multiple instances of overlaps in timeline and tasks. I then learned how to manage these clashes while ensuring that my projects were all on schedule.

It was a project that was handed over to me to mainly follow up with the authority submissions.

Apart from the Building Plan (BP) submission to the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), I have also helped to develop the staircase design based on the advised structure by the Professional Engineer (PE).

Proposed Addition and Alteration to an existing 3-storey detached house on lot MK0404941X at 39 Allamanda Grove Singapore 269981 The nature of this project is the proposed Addition and Alteration (A&A) to an existing 3-storey detached house located at 38 Allamanda Grove. It started off as a potential project and hence, the brief was pretty vague and open for exploration. Some of the keywords provided by the Client were the following: 1. Grand Frontage 2. Swimming Pool 3. 5 Bedrooms with Ensuite Bathrooms That said, I started off the preliminary design for the house with some conventional site studies (sun and wind path, surrounding site) as well as understanding of the existing plans (fig. 6, 7 & 8) since this is an A&A project.

Based on sun and wind path studies, we noticed that the building is orientated in such a way that it catches the North-East and prevailing winds. Hence, our proposal was to capitalise on this asset, creating a naturally-ventilated courtyard that catches the wind.

the verte Proposed Interior Design to a Unit at 118 Lorong H Telok Kurau, The Verte #01-03 Singapore 426146 The Verte (TV) is an interior design (ID) project at Lor H Telok Kurau, led by me under the guidance of Jing Feng. The site is a 3-bedroom unit in a condominium (fig. 21 & 22), and the occupant that will be staying in the unit is the Client’s 83-year-old mother and her helper.

The Clients are very specific in what they want in the design, such as their Fengshui requirements, a Catholic Altar, an extended island space, as well as to convert bedroom 2 into a bigger living space, and bedroom 3 into a study cum helper’s room.

On top of these requirements, they would also like the design to be future-proof so that they will be able to rent out the apartment as the original 3-bedroom unit in future.

To save contruction costs, the Clients have also requested for us to keep the existing marble tiles in the living room and the existing parquet floors in the bedrooms. The Clients would also prefer grey aesthetics and majority of the furniture to be loose furniture, rather than built-in.

Based on the Client’s questionnaire and brief, we then came up with 2 design layouts: one that is adhering closely to their brief (fig. 24), and an alternative layout with a bit of a twist in terms of concept (fig. 26).

1. Feng Shui Requirements: i. To remove the kitchen door that is in line with the main entrance door; ii. Stove to be orientated, facing towards the East; iii. 1. To completely removed the central corridor so that we are able to enlarge the Master Bedroom.

2. The existing Bedroom 2 is converted into the study/helper’s room. It can be accessible through a semi-outdoor corridor along the front balcony.

3. To include 2 smaller windows on both sides of the study/helper’s room, allowing the caregiver to be able to monitor the Mother’s safety closely throughout the day.

4. Shifted the Dining space to be nearer to the entrance, creating this very grand social space that includes the living area as well.

5. Reconfigured the Kitchen and Bathroom to enlarge both spaces.
