Complications to covet A dozen mechanical moon phase watches that perfectly capture the essence of the art By Alex Smith The moon phase complication inhabits a very privileged place in modern horology. Designed to display the various stages of the lunar cycle, it does so not by means of a numerical register but in the form of an image that migrates across a recessed aperture as the moon waxes and wanes. This attractively whimsical feature helps reassert the intimate relationship between watchmaking and astronomy, while creating fresh scope for creative ingenuity. Of course, its limited utility for the 21st century user renders it more a playful indulgence than a practical asset but, done well, this most romantic and desirable of complications remains a captivating celebration of the watchmaker’s art.

tone Records is a new independent label born from the coming-together of experienced industry professionals who share the same ethos: to nurture, encourage and support artists in every aspect of their career. Following 20 years of working in live music, the founders of 3tone Records now feel compelled to address some of the shortfalls in today’s industry. Building on a comprehensive track record that includes working with platinum-selling artists and achieving worldwide commercial success, 3tone Records is certainly not here to announce a new way, but rather a new twist on the old way. A great chart position can be helpful, but it is not considered to be the sole focus. 3tone Records considers live music to be key to its philosophy. New and established artists alike can expect to not only receive the very best support, but to remain central in how 3tone Records brings their music to market.

The latest arrival from the Jurassic coast Sunseeker has had a strong year, is this the icing on its 2016 cake? Unveiled recently in London, the arrival of this 40 metre yacht closed down city airport, purely for safety purposes whilst it entered dock. Its good to cause a stir. The Sunseeker 131, a tri-deck motor-yacht, has been hailed by many in the industry as a design triumph and is made available fully bespoke from the cabins to the cocktail bar up top. Five cabins can accommodate up to 10 guests, cruising at 14 knots (top speed 23 knots) and a range of up to 1,500 nautical miles. Inside the Master Stateroom, saloon and upper saloon Sunseeker designers have added

- 53 -

feature glass which creates open and light filled spaces to enjoy whilst outer decks have been given extra space to enhance your experiences outside. A skydeck which accommodates a bar is the ideal spot for kicking back and enjoying all you survey and whatever your mixologist has lined up for you to accompany the delivery from the galley. Build time for each new 131 Yacht is about a year and demand thus far strong with eight already sold. sunseeker.com

Show-boating Over 300 marine-based manufacturers will be showcasing their wares and touting new trends in the capital in early 2017 There’s plenty to shout about at the 2017 London Boat Show it seems. From the chance to try out new watersports to chilling out on an indoor marina, it’s a favourite event for the Tempus team and the perfect place to banish any winter blues.

Head up to the Sunseeker champagne bar for something bubbly in the midst of hundreds of boats and there’s also a mixologist on-hand. It runs from January 6 to 15 at ExCel. See you there. londonboatshow.com

The sleekest of sun loungers Quite literally transforming the yacht space, the Evo 43 is a jaw-dropper – big on brains and beautiful too From the Italian shipyard Evo Yachts, this revolutionary 13-metre yacht, sporty and sumptuous in design is stacked with hi-tech features inspired by home automation. The characteristic that truly sets it apart is its ability to transform the outer deck space to almost double its original size, an incredible 25 square metres of space. The XTensions, as they are called by the

company, which create this impressive extra space take less than 30 seconds to take their place to create a sun deck with built-in deck chairs or a diving platform. All of the XTension commands can be controlled from your iPhone – with just one button to configure your space, we believe you’ll not tire of pressing the buttons for a while.

Because a cognac is not just for Christmas This issue’s designated drinker, Rebecca Asseline, global brand ambassador, Courvoisier says the liquid gold is pure class Cognac’s transformation from a once-a-year festive tipple to a regular essential has been years in the making. Once thought of as an-after dinner drink, the favourite French spirit has been embraced by Brits who are firmly establishing cognac as a permanent bar cart resident. And it’s not just after dinner that cognac is being enjoyed, with Brits experimenting with the liquid gold as an aperitif, in cocktails and served alongside food in a bid to show off their skills and savviness. In the UK there used to be a significant culture of cognac being a ‘club drink’. Postrecession, drinkers are becoming much savvier regarding their drinks choice. A serve has to earn its price tag and, more often than not, have a little heritage behind it. Cognac is seen as the perfect cocktail spirit – luxurious, celebratory and with a wealth of history. The classic cocktail names themselves are wonderfully evocative – Sazerac, Rendezvous, Champagne cocktail – giving drinkers a taste of cognac’s heritage: a ready-made story, so important in mixology these days. Social media has transformed the landscape of mixology; millennials are now ‘mini brand ambassadors’, wanting to impress with their inside knowledge and advocate a product that they can get behind. Cocktail bars today are full of young people talking about the drink they’ve just been served – it’s a passion that just didn’t exist in the same way 15 years ago. Cognac’s innate story telling is highly shareable; bar-goers are increasingly inquisitive and respectful of the process behind their drinks and lean towards spirits that can satisfy this demand. In short: a cognac cocktail is a serious talking point and young professionals want to buy into it.

A cocktail for all seasons

Try this

The Sazerac (100% cognac with Courvosier VSOP when possible). The Sazerac represents in itself all my favourite elements of a cocktail; its style, balance, simplicity, and the necessary method to create it. There is nostalgia and something poetic about this drink, to me, - and that feeling doesn’t seem to wear-off. The Classic Champagne Cocktail is a great pre or post dinner cocktail. It brings out a touch of festivity and an element of celebration whenever the occasion feels right.

Best bars to drink Cognac The Connaught Bar in London is a personal favourite. I do love hotel bars as they often take you on a timeless journey. The Connaught is a perfect example of consistency in level of hospitality and quality of drinks. A friendly yet luxurious experience. The Dark Horse, in Bath. This bar was created just about a year ago and put Bath on the map of places where to go to enjoy a perfectly balanced cocktail, in a non-pretentious way, yet with high standards of service. It offers you a warm environment where you can enjoy conversations, fantastic music and drinks. Every single detail about this place makes you feel at home.

The Last Drop By Craig Maclellan

W

hisky is currently the drink de jour, with consumers the world over scrambling for a piece of Scotland’s national tipple. However, the industry went through some tough times in the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, when many distilleries were forced to close their doors. But what of the liquid gold from those distilleries which is still silently maturing? Well, that’s where The Last Drop Distillers come in. The aim of the independent bottler is simple – find and bottle the world’s finest, rarest and most exclusive spirits. The Last Drop is the brainchild of James Espey and Tom Jago – two industry stalwarts who, rather than retiring, decided to put their knowledge and contacts to good use. Despite the pair’s expertise, this is still a pretty tall task. A lot of whiskies don’t age well past the 20-year mark and they can also drop below the magical 40% ABV threshold at which a spirit can be called whisky. Dozens of casks are rejected in the pursuit of perfection but, if the stars align, then some truly wonderful whiskies can emerge. For The Last Drop, this has happened seven times to date, with six whiskies and one Cognac produced. The focus is on small, limited runs, with the age of whiskies often making larger runs impossible.

The latest addition to the collection is the new 1961 Dumbarton Single Grain Scotch Whisky. Dumbarton Distillery was, at one point, one of the largest distilleries in Scotland, but it was closed in 2002 after 64 years of whisky making. Thankfully, the team from The Last Drop managed to unearth a cask in the warehouses of Auchentoshan Distillery, just along the road. I managed to snaffle a dram of this at its launch and it simply slips across the palate beautifully, offering plenty of sweet notes, including vanilla, coconut and honey. The finish, as you might expect from a dram this age is old, yet light and distinguishably reassuring. Only 32 bottles were squeezed out of the cask and unfortunately – despite the four figure price tag – all of them were snapped up by the company’s loyal customer base prior to launch. The detective work done by The Last Drop over the past decade is nothing short of astounding. Due to their advancing years, the running of the company has passed to James’ daughter Beanie and Tom’s daughter Rebecca, although their fathers’ influence can still be felt. And with ports, sherries and rums all in the pipeline, it’s safe to say that – just like the whisky industry – they’ve got a bright future ahead of them.

newyears resolution Fill your senses with high resolution wonderment courtesy of the premium equipment promising a pleasurable assault on your eyes and ears By James Day Film directors and music producers are purists, dedicated to making their art look and sound the very best it possibly can. So excuse them for tearing their hair out as we wilfully went about forfeiting quality for convenience by streaming movies and music with an inferior end product. It doesn’t have to be that way anymore. Hisense 75M7900 England’s abject showing at Euro 2016 meant many were drawn to the digital advertising hoardings as a means of respite. Fortunately for the tournament’s tech sponsor it got people googling Hisense. Formula One fans will be more familiar with the Chinese brand for supplying Red Bull Racing with its 4K panels. While the TV world is plumping for OLED, Hisense has its own propriety technology called ULED – or Ultra LED. This isn’t different for different sake. Hisense believe ULED outperforms OLED on brightness and darker details, they’ve also beaten a raft of big brand rivals on price and performance. Their range-topping 75-inch model also includes HDR and a convincingly deep sound stage. £2,499 hisense.co.uk

4 Panasonic DMP-UB900 Streaming isn’t the only way to get your fill of 4K. Ultra HD Blu-ray might feel like a last hurrah for physical disc formats, but arguably yields the most impressive results. It also provides a welcome stay of execution for bonus material and collector’s edition packaging to keep fanboys suitably clammy. Panasonic’s stealthy first generation player sets the standard in this field by including HDR support from the get-go. More so, though, it’s also clever enough to future proof you in a multitude of other areas. There’s USB and SD card support, streaming services from all the major players including Netflix and an internal DAC capable of handling high resolution audio. £599 panasonic.com

Apple iMac 5K To get the full 4K effect a screen size of 40 inches or upwards is really required. There are exceptions to this rule and Apple’s incredible 5K Retina display represents just that. The 27-inch slab offers seven times as many pixels as an HD TV and the picture is so achingly beautiful even Facebook photos appear attractive. Now, you could sit there endlessly watching 4K YouTube videos and frankly nobody would blame you, but this desktop computer is designed for fastidious content creators like photographers and videographers – the sort of people that stay within the lines when colouring in. Nice ice baby High-octane fun time is the next big driving experience boast By Conor McNicolas A word of warning. Ice driving is not for the faint-hearted. Specialist driving tours company, Classic Grand Touring, are organising three exhilarating ice-driving trips to Sweden in February 2017 Situated close to the border with Norway, the stunning frozen lake where the trips take place is near the tiny village of Rorbacksnas, not far from the ski resort of Salen, Sweden. You’re then free to take the various cars out all day long with a timed assessment at the end of your trip to track how well you’ve mastered the art driving at speed on ice. classicgt.co.uk

The Pulitzer Surprise The newly reopened Dutch hotel is a feast for the senses with ambience aplenty

By Dawn Alford

W

e all know the proverb that first impressions are the most lasting. This is indubitably true when it comes to hotels. Our instincts are at a heightened state even before we reach the lobby. We have already checked out the surroundings and street life, we’ve clocked the nearest restaurant or bar and we’ve made a decision on the signage and lighting effects of the facade. And now the reception – the big reveal. We make a sub-conscious decision in seconds as to whether this hotel will suit us. Is this our kind of place? The Pulitzer, Amsterdam, knows how to impress from a hundred metres away. It screams Dutch chic from its canal-side black brick 17th

century buildings as you approach. Step inside and it’s an eclectic mix of urban and luxury, unusual object d’art and sumptuous sofas. The lobby smells incredible, is beautifully lit and bustles with stylish guests and good looking staff. My favourite hotels have personality – and this felt like I was on a double date with Clooney, Moss, and Pablo Picasso. The hotel is formed from in an intricate maze of 25 connecting Golden Age canal houses, some dating back to 1615. It was fully renovated and reopened in August this year. The bedrooms continue to reflect the chic comfort. It is said the designer Jacu Strauss spent a night in each of the 225 rooms contemplating the design and layout individually. There are four themed suites; the Book Collector’s,

Art Collector’s, Antique Collector’s and Music Collector’s which reference past residents. The suites offer separate living areas, and include antique furnishings, original artwork and even music instruments. Designer Strauss has said: “The whole story of the Pulitzer is about trying to imagine who lived here over the centuries. It’s about what they may have left behind. ‘I wanted to work with the architecture that was here, because it was so beautiful and individual. The designs, colours and shapes are inspired by something I’ve seen in Amsterdam or around the country.” If you’re wondering about the name. The hotel’s founder in 1960 was American businessman Peter Pulitzer, the grandson of the man whose bequest established the Pulitzer Prize. He is no longer at the helm but the hotel remains privately owned. For foodies, the restaurant is a wonderful treat with local dishes served to perfection. Chef Cassidy Hallman draws crowds with both unusual and simple ingredients. The hotel also has a separate ultra cool bar, wine salon, espresso

bar, and 24-hour room service. In spring and summer lunch and dinner can be eaten in the hotel’s beautiful courtyard garden which offers a peaceful haven. The hotel sits in the beautifully central-yet sedate location Nine Streets neighborhood in the heart of Amsterdam the, a stone’s throw from Anne Frank Haus. Popular sights such as Dam Square, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Red Light District are an easy walk away. If, however you prefer to see the sights from the water, guests can tour he city with a glass of wine in hand on the hotel’s own boat. It is the same vessel Winston Churchill chose to tour Amsterdam with the Dutch Queen to celebrate the end of the war in 1946. The Pulitzer is a gem, luxurious and stylish and yet homely. A two-day stay here has made me want to return. Perhaps with the kids next time as the hotel was also won accolades for its children’s services. And of course I’ve only experienced life in one of the uniquely designed rooms – so there’s 224 still to test.

A Sea of Tranquillity Tenerife offers real luxury living for families at one of the islands best five stars By Dawn Alford

W

hen you think of Tenerife – tranquillity and calm are not words that immediately spring to mind. But the Costa Adeje is altogether different to the more brash Playa De Las Americas resort. It has more style, more class and is decidedly more peaceful. With year-round sunshine the island has long been a favourite with the British and all reachable within a comfortable four-hour flight.

For my children the flight with Monarch Airlines went like this – get on board, eat something, watch a movie and disembark. There was not one uttering of “are we nearly there”. Our hotel for the week was the five star Roca Nivaria Gran Hotel – part of the Adrian Hotels group - and the luxury is apparent from the moment we stepped into reception. The staff were attentive, the rooms sublime and the views from the terrace simply spectacular.

- 107 -

An early morning flight means we got to the hotel in time for lunch and, of course, the inviting swimming pool. There was something for everyone poolside at this hotel – a waterfall, a shallow area, a separate fun pool and an open air Jacuzzi. The Balinese chill out beds with their sea views were a big hit with the children who thoroughly enjoyed ordering fruit cocktails to be delivered by the ever friendly poolside waiters.

Situated on the peaceful Playa Paraiso area on the southern coast of the Costa Adeje, there are 289 rooms with private terraces and sports at the hotel included a gym, archery range, beach volleyball court and a sports centre with tennis. And for the parents – I mean children – there is a miniclub. Mine made friends on day-one and frankly couldn’t wait for breakfast to end so they could go and play. Leaving us plenty of time to relax and read and visit the spa – and to admire the stunning high views across the ocean.

The hotel was recently voted among the tip 10 best environmentally friendly properties in Spain and the attention to detail in the design is impressive. Eating was a pleasure too. Yes there was a buffet but the food was beautifully cooked and replenished and there were many local surprises and delights too to try. There are also two a la carte restaurants, one Spanish and one Italian which were excellent. Altogether a fabulous hotel and a touch of affordable luxury for the entire family. We will be back.

By Conor McNicholas

It’s the fastest production Jaguar of all time. But can it justify its supercar price-tag?

- 115 -

Y

ou’ll almost certainly hear the F-Type SVR before you see it. On the centre console of the car there’s a small button with a simple graphic of an exhaust. Hit this and the engine goes into ‘loud mode’. Whoever is behind the wheel of the SVR will almost certainly have hit this button and be gleefully broadcasting a sonorous wail to anyone within a half-mile radius. You can’t help it, it’s just too wonderful. Often in life, the nosiest characters are the ones over-compensating for something, and if any car should arrive with a massive chip on its shoulder it’s this one. It certainly has a lot to prove. One hundred and ten thousand pounds for a Jaguar – that’s what this special F-Type is asking. And that’s base level. The car we tested – with a not unreasonable number of extras – clocked in at a cat’s whisker under £133,000. Sit back and think about that for a moment. Jaguar have undoubtedly made some fine cars in recent years but this motor is being pitched fully into supercar territory. In base form the Jag is up against the Maserati Granturismo, Aston Martin V12 Vantage or even a nearly new Ferrari F430 or Lamborghini Gallardo. Loaded with fairly essential carbon ceramic brakes and a weight-saving dash of carbon fibre, the Jag squares up to even the Porsche 911 Turbo or McLaren 540C. That’s very heady territory. But this is no ordinary Jaguar. Far from it. The base F-Type is a fine coupe but this SVR version has been to Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations unit. This is a car that the engineers at Jaguar have wanted to make for a very long time and now finally given the opportunity they’ve gone all out. Think Wolverine having his bones replaced with adamantium. What you get is a 200mph car, 25kg lighter than the F-Type R, that will take you from 0-60 in just 3.5sec and use all of its 575bhp to tingle your spine. Those figures would have put this car into hypercar territory not too many years ago. They certainly confirm the Jag’s supercar credentials today.

The exterior does a fine job of communicating the potential beneath. Penned by Jaguar’s head of design Ian Callum (whose previous hit include the svelte Aston Martin DB7 and a good deal of the iconic Aston DB9) it’s clearly been a labour of love. All Ian’s understanding of the perfect physical balance of a coupe – long bonnet, aggressive snout, high haunches – are here. The F-Type is undoubtedly his finest work. While the standard car is one of the best-looking coupes on the road at any price, the SVR version is even more aggressive. Move inside and you slip into the beautifully finished quilted leather seats to be presented with an interior that delivers all the solidity and luxury you’d expect from a true supercar. Hit the starter button and the caterwaul from the exhausts instantly distance this car from the standard F-Type. The 5.0 litre supercharged

V8 is urgent and fierce, gleefully popping if it’s pushed from cold. Hit the road and the SVR handles sublimely. There’s a wonderful balance here between poise and confidence in corners and a swing-happy rear end that just begs to be slid sideways. Every inch of road is a thrill. Supercars are not bought with the head, they are bought with the heart, but you still need to be able to justify the purchase to yourself every time you look out on the driveway. Can a Jaguar, albeit a 200mph one, really challenge the Maseratis and Lambos of this world? Time spent with this car says yes. It’s a fabulous piece of work, and a car so rare that it’s likely to appreciate strongly in years to come. That alone should help your head justify the purchase. You heart will have been lost to the noise a long time ago.
