The History of Ashkenazi Jews and Germany: a two-part class on ZOOM with
Dr. David Mendelsohn

In preparation for this summer’s congregational trip to Germany, Cantors Sergei & Elena Schwartz are offering two special classes with a distinguished professor of Jewish history, Dr. David Mendelsohn.
Dr. Mendelsohn has spent the last 25 years researching and exploring diverse Jewish communities around the world including, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Eastern Europe, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Egypt, and India. He combines his expertise as a historian, archaeologist and sociolinguist to gain a deep and intimate knowledge of these diasporic Jewish communities. His interest lies in researching and sharing his discoveries and understanding of the individual histories, identifying their constant and common thread while illuminating the unique aspects of the individual community due to the Influence of the local culture.
Dr. Mendelsohn recently lived in Hamburg, Germany for seven years, where he spent much of the time studying the history and current realities of the Jews of Germany.
He will be joining us via Zoom from Jerusalem.

Sergeant Major, IDF, Unit 669 Tel Aviv University medical student
Guy M is a sixth-year medical student at Tel Aviv University’s Gray Faculty of Medicine, whose journey is characterized by a blend of medical excellence, military service, and a commitment to fostering leadership in the medical community. In addition to his studies, Guy is a combat paramedic (reserve) in Unit 669, the IDF’s Elite Combat Rescue Unit.
His dedication to saving lives is evident through his active participation in multiple rescue missions including being among the rst teams to arrive to the communities in the Gaza Envelope Region on the devasting Black Sabbath, October 7th. Guy’s in uence extends beyond the battle eld, as he holds a permanent lecturer position in the IDF senior commander courses, imparting his knowledge to future leaders at institutions like the Naval Academy, the prestigious 8200 Israeli Intelligence Unit, and in the IDF Of cer Training Academy.
At the forefront of medical research, Guy leads a Department at Kahn-Sagol Maccabi, a global leader in the eld. Simultaneously, he contributes his insights to the public as a regular columnist for GLOBES newspaper.
Guy is the author of one of Israel’s best-selling books, From Zero to One Hundred, a captivating diary chronicling the experiences of his special forces rescue team during mandatory service. It has become essential reading for teenagers aspiring to join elite units and the public. His most recent book, The Rescue: October 7th Through the Eyes of Israel’s Para-Rescue Commandos, is a best-seller in Israel and was recently published in English.
Driven by a passion for nurturing excellence and leadership, Guy founded JIMS: The Journal of Israeli Medical Students during his second year in medical school. Modeled after successful initiatives at Harvard and Yale, JIMS serves as a hub for aspiring medical students in Israel and abroad, fostering a community dedicated to excellence and leadership in the eld.
Beyond his academic and military pursuits, Guy has led humanitarian missions, including establishing an EMS system in Central America and leading the rst COVID-19 vaccination rollout in Africa.
In his free time, Guy likes kitesur ng and yoga, and he enjoys travelling with his wife Noga.
