Guest Speaker: Sinai’s Own, Ken Levine former helicopter pilot in the Israeli Air Force
Ken Levine was born and raised in Givatayim, Israel, and at 18, he joined the Israeli Air Force, proudly serving as a helicopter pilot. At 25, he moved to New York, following his wife-to-be, Shelly. While working for the Israeli Mission to the U.S., Ken earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry.
Graduate school brought new opportunities, as Ken completed an MBA and began his career in the pharmaceutical industry. Over the years, Ken and his family lived in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, eventually returning to New York in 2021 to settle in Roslyn.
Throughout their journey, the Levine’s have been active members of URJ congregations, and upon arriving in Roslyn, they joined Temple Sinai. Their older son, Lee, celebrated his Bar Mitzvah shortly after moving here in 2022, and their younger twins, Gabe and Adam, are looking forward to theirs in 2026.
Wine Tasting for an Important Cause:
Support Israeli soldiers and displaced families at Temple Sinai!
February 13 is the Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shevat, which celebrates the potential rebirth of spring after a dormant winter. Even though the ground is still frozen, we have faith that the seeds we planted are growing just beneath the surface. It is a holiday of optimism and hope.
That is why this Tu B’Shevat, Temple Sinai is planting seeds of hope in Israel, that we hope will take root and flourish. In partnership with It’s a Date, an initiative that supports the wellbeing of Israeli soldiers and displaced families by selling Israeli wine, we will be hosting a Tu B’Shevat celebration and wine tasting. Throughout this festive, casual evening, we will taste delicious wines from Israel and learn about those we can help with each wine purchase.
Schedule - Thursday, February 13, 2025:
7:00-7:30pm – Cocktails and mingling
7:30-8:30pm – Wine tasting and presentation by It’s a Date and Rabbi Schachter
Suggested Donation: $18/person (includes wine tasting and light refreshments) Register at mysinai.org/tubshevatwinetasting

HIDING IN HOLLAND: A Resistance Memoir Shulamit Reinharz
presented in in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day
Tuesday, January 28 • 12:00pm via ZOOM
Shulamit Reinharz was born in Amsterdam, Holland in June 1946, a little over a year after the end of both World War II and the Holocaust. For a short while she and her parents lived in Israel, but soon after, her family moved to the United States. Shulamit holds a B.A. with Honors in Sociology from Barnard College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Brandeis University. She spent 10 years teaching at the University of Michigan before returning to Brandeis as a Professor of Sociology, where she also served as Director of the Women’s Studies Undergraduate and Graduate Programs. Shulamit founded the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute for the study of the intersection of Jews and gender, the Women‘s Studies Research Center, and the Kniznick Gallery for Feminist and Jewish Art.
Published last June, Hiding in Holland: A Resistance Memoir is her 17th book. In it she integrates dozens of cartons of materials preserved haphazardly by her father, with the research she conducted to put it all into context. Shulamit Reinharz has been recognized for this latest work by the Leo Baeck Institute. And she is the proud sister of Jonathan Rothschild, whom you know as an active member of Temple Sinai.

SINAI CINEMA
Narrated by Sir Ben Kingsley
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 2 1:00PM
AT TEMPLE SINAI
It Is No Dream: The Life of Theodor Herzl explores the life and times of Theodor Herzl, father of the modern state of Israel. Narrated by Academy Award®-winner, Sir Ben Kingsley and starring Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz as the voice of Theodor Herzl. The film examines how Herzl, a well-known journalist and playwright, an assimilated, Budpest-born Jew, horrified by the Dreyfus trial in Paris and the antisemitism he saw spreading across Europe, took upon himself the task of attempting to create a Jewish homeland in Palestine against all odds.
Over the span of eight years, Herzl organized and led a worldwide political movement that within fifty years led to the establishment of the state of Israel. The film follows Herzl as he meets with Kings, Prime Ministers, Ambassadors, a Sultan, a Pope and government ministers from Constantinople to St. Petersburg, from Paris to Berlin, from Vienna to Vilna in his quest to build a Jewish nation.
