A Time for New Beginnings
Best wishes for a healthy and happy holiday season. It happens around this time every year, but the holidays never seem to be on time to me. One year they are early, next year they are late. Welcome to the High Holy Days! Our happy new year celebration followed by our solemn Day of Atonement.
I like to think about the High Holy Days as a time of new beginnings and a time to make amends. I look forward to this time of year. For me, it is a time for reflection and a review of the past year. What have I done right? What have I done wrong? Who have I offended (notice, I know I have!)? Have I atoned for my mistakes?
This time of year also lends itself to looking forward and making new plans. As the new president of Temple Sinai, I am working to improve the temple’s performance. How can we be more inclusive? How can we get our congregants more involved and bring the congregation together? Some of the issues are easy fixes, others are more difficult and need the assistance of many.
TSR (when I say TSR, I mean that inclusively--everyone from our clergy to our professional staff to our Board of Trustees to our congregants...EVERYONE) wants you to be involved in our future. We cannot do this alone. TSR needs your
participation. One of my areas of focus in the coming years is building a stronger relationship with our congregation. For many of our fellow congregants, their relationship with the temple has become highly transactional. The temple assists our children in learning about our Jewish heritage in Religious School, becoming B’nei Mitzvah, becoming Confirmands, and perhaps being part of our teen programs throughout High School.
Often, people leave as they feel they have given their children the foundation to become “good” Jews, but what example does that set for them? How wonderful it would be for the relationship to continue?
The success of your relationship with TSR is dependent upon both the congregation and the temple as an organization. As president, it is my desire to make this relationship more personal and more enduring, but I cannot do it without your participation. I will make myself available to communicate with anyone in the congregation. Please feel free to reach out anytime. May the New Year be one of great health, much happiness, and peace for everyone!

The Magic of Jewish Summer Camp
In the middle of July, as the sun set over the scenic Berkshires landscape, I watched as 300 Crane Lake campers put their arms around each other and sang the Hashkiveinu and Shema, the evening prayers customarily recited before bed. These campers, tired from a long day of activities ranging from soccer to archery to art, beamed with joy as they sang these ancient words, surrounded by their closest friends and adopted family.
This stunning ritual moment took my breath away as I felt I was witnessing something profound and unique, but it was, in fact, simply an average evening at Crane Lake Camp. There, Jewish ritual is seamlessly integrated into the rhythm and routine of camp life, and it serves as the glue that binds campers to one another and to the Jewish people.
Growing up, I was never a camper, and so it wasn’t always clear to me what made sleepaway camp so special (or Jewish sleepaway camp in particular). But, having spent two weeks in “the bubble,” I have been able to witness and experience the myriad ways that Jewish camp truly is magic.
To begin with, children at Crane Lake are not only immersed in a camp experience, but in Jewish community. Judaism is in the background and the foreground of the camp experience, from morning Tefila that feels more a campfire sing along, to Jewish values being explicitly named and lifted up each week, to Shabbat being “observed” with Dunkin Donuts in the morning, followed by several hours of free play. Simply put, being Jewish at camp is fun. There is joy. There is music. There is curiosity. In addition, camp is a homecoming, even for first time campers or staff (or even visiting faculty). Camp is an environment where everyone belongs and has always belonged. The Jewish values of Chesed (kindness) and Rachamim (compassion) are brought to life, resulting in a space where everyone is proud to be themselves, and equally proud to embrace others.
So often, we speak of teaching Judaism to our children and grandchildren with a sense of urgency, driven by a fear of what is at stake and what could be lost. So many of us fear what will happen to the Jewish project without sufficient Jewish learning and Jewish literacy, without a connection to Jewish texts, rituals, or holidays. And, in a world where antisemitism is aggressively rising, and where it can feel legitimately frightening to be Jewish in America and around the world, we devote a lot of time to thinking about self preservation. But the magic of Jewish summer camp is that it is powered by joy, not fear. Its leadership has imagined a community where Judaism is in the air and in the hearts of the entire community, where it is the culture and the shared language.
I know that many of us cannot go to camp, and even those who do have to return from the bubble at some point. But, there are so many ways to engage in Jewish life with Temple Sinai, as evidenced by the contents of this issue of the SCRIBE. In addition, I hope you will consider joining me on our congregational trip to Israel this February, where contemporary Jewish life is re-imagined against the backdrop of our people’s history. Together, we will learn about Israel’s past while engaging with its vibrant present. If you can’t experience Jewish summer camp, Israel is never a bad alternative.
Even if you don’t have plans to leave New York, I look forward to re-imagining with you the ways that we can rediscover Jewish life, whether by creating our own Shabbat rituals, or by trying to lift up Jewish values in our daily routines, or by serving others who need our help. This year, may we commit to a Jewish life filled with meaning, with love, and most of all, with joy.

Let’s Learn Together!
The Adult Engagement Committee and I are very excited for the 2023-24 year! There will be lots of opportunities to learn together and deepen our sense of community.
Our upcoming programs include journalist and Jewish Book Council author Lisa Belkin, who will discuss her latest non-fiction book, Genealogy of a Murder. We will hear author Daniel Gross speak about financier Edmond Safra. Scholar (and recent Jeopardy! champion) Melissa Klapper will teach us about American Jewish Women as Changemakers, and Brad Kolodny will return to Temple Sinai to talk about his new book, The Jews of Long Island: 1705-1918. Museum exhibition tours and art history lectures are slated to take place, and “Sinai Sunday Cinema” will return for the first time since before the pandemic with Fiddler’s Journey to the Big Screen. We will have two wonderful Light Classical Concerts, as well as a long-
awaited Cantorial Concert this year. As always, our incomparable clergy will lead new classes beginning after the High Holy Days.
After a second successful year of Sinai Tribes, we will be adding new Tribes in the Fall. As a reminder, Sinai Tribes are congregant-led small groups of no more than 12 people brought together by stage-of-life or by shared passion area. Stay tuned for more information, and please reach out to me if you would like to get involved, either as a Tribe leader or participant.
I can’t wait to share a year of meaningful, engaging, and fun experiences with you!

BRAD KOLODNY THE JEWS OF LONG ISLAND
Sunday, November 5 • 3:00pm
at Temple Sinai
The fall of 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of Fiddler on the Roof, the film Pauline Kael (The New Yorker) called the most powerful movie musical ever made. Narrated by Jeff Goldblum, FIDDLER’S JOURNEY TO THE BIG SCREEN captures the humor and drama of director Norman Jewison’s quest to recreate the lost world of Jewish life in Tsarist Russia and re-envision the beloved stage hit as a wide-screen epic.
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Daniel Raim puts us in the director’s chair and in Jewison’s heart and mind, drawing on behind-the-scenes footage and never-before-seen stills as well as original interviews with Jewison, Topol (Tevye), composer John Williams, production designer Robert F. Boyle, film critic Kenneth Turan, lyricist Sheldon Harnick, and actresses Rosalind Harris, Michele Marsh, and Neva Small (Tevye’s daughters).
The film explores how the experience of making Fiddler deepened Jewison as an artist and revived his soul.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19 10:00AM
AT TEMPLE SINAI
Brad Kolodny, president and founder of the Jewish Historical Society of Long Island, returns to Temple Sinai to discuss his book, The Jews of Long Island.
In this book, Brad documents the personal and communal stories of Jews on Long Island from the l8th through the early 20th centuries, uncovering a cast of thousands from itinerant peddlers to early baseball players to vacationing vaudevillians. With over 4,400 names of people who lived in Nassau and Suffolk counties prior to the end of World War
I, The Jews of Long Island is a fascinating history of those who laid the foundation for what has become the fourth largest Jewish community in the United States today.

A BANKER’S JOURNEY How
EDMOND J. SAFRA
Built a Global Financial Empire
Tuesday, November 28 7:30pm at Temple Sinai
Who was Edmond J. Safra? “The greatest banker of his generation,” in the estimation of a former World Bank President. The founder of four massive financial institutions on three continents, and a proud child of Beirut’s Jewish quarter. An innovative avatar of financial globalization, and a faithful heir to a tradition of old-world banking. The leading champion and protector of the Sephardic diaspora.

It is an honor to have been selected to lead the Brotherhood of Temple Sinai as the next president.
I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge my predecessor, Richard Blatt. During his presidency, Brotherhood’s meeting attendance rose nearly 50% and the meetings were productive and positive. Temple Sinai’s Brotherhood received two awards at the Men of Reform Judaism (MRJ) Conference held in Providence, Rhode Island in late June. One of the awards we took home was the Milton E. Harris Award for Outstanding Service to the Local Community, in recognition of the very successful CONNECT Networking Group Richie started a few years back.
Brotherhood is looking forward to a very exciting year! We already have several wonderful, fun events scheduled including two we are putting on in conjunction with Friend of a Friend: a Karaoke Night in January and a Comedy Night in March. We also have planned several Scotch and Sacred Text evenings with Rabbi White; they are always educational and informative. In the spring, we will hold our annual pre-Passover dinner at Ben’s Deli with Rabbi Schachter, who will share her knowledge on the meaning and symbols of the holiday while we share a delicious meal.
Some other programs and events we hope to add to the schedule include Nine and Dine with Rabbi White at Harbor Links Golf Club in Port Washington and a special Brotherhood Shabbat. We invite you to join us on our journey this year. We would be delighted to have as many members as possible participate. We look forward to seeing all of you at our monthly meetings and special events.

BROTHERHOOD
BROTHERHOOD
The Brotherhood of Temple Sinai of Roslyn received national recognition for its original community services and outstanding programs, and was honored to receive service and programming awards from Men of Reform Judaism (MRJ) at its biennial convention, held on June 24, 2023. The convention marked the 100th anniversary of the founding of MRJ and was held at Temple Beth-El in Providence, Rhode Island, one of the founding members of the organization in 1923. MRJ is the national arm of the Union of Reform Judaism (URJ) that oversees the Brotherhoods and Men’s Clubs of all Reform Jewish synagogues in North America.
Our Brotherhood received the prestigious Milton E. Harris Award for CONNECT, the innovative networking group established by the Brotherhood’s immediate past president, Richard Blatt. This group meets regularly and is available to all members of the congregation looking for the opportunity to offer their professional services or avail themselves of others who may offer reliable references to service providers.
Larry Krasnoff, vice-president of Men of Reform Judaism, presents awards for Outstanding Programming to the Brotherhood of Temple Sinai.
Accepting the awards are newly-elected Brotherhood president Norm Hollander and past president Richard Blatt.
The Brotherhood also received the Irving Richman Award for Outstanding Adult Jewish Programs for focusing on the topic of Jewish Genealogy through featured speakers, activities, and trips. Taking advantage of the wide variety of research opportunities in the New York metropolitan area, the Brotherhood has sponsored speakers from the Jewish Genealogical Society as well as the authors of Jewish-based history books, held work sessions on developing a Family Tree and writing Jewish memoirs, conducted trips to the Jewish museums and historic sites that abound in New York City and on Long Island, and scheduled other activities that enrich our knowledge and appreciation of our Jewish heritage.
These awards by the MRJ are offered in the memory of former leaders of the organization who are revered for their contributions to MRJ and the values of Reform Judaism.
CONNECT, Temple Sinai’s Networking Group, has been going strong since it launched in November, 2020. The mission of CONNECT is to bring professionals together with the goal of referring good contacts and potential clients to one another. By helping one another improve our businesses, we are helping to improve the well-being of our Temple Sinai community.
Join us at our upcoming meetings - Wednesdays at 8:00am: September 13 & 27 • October 11 & 25 • November 8 & 22

We are thrilled to announce that the B’Mitzvah program will be returning for the 2023-2024 Religious School year, bigger and better than ever! We loved watching our families take part in the B’Mitzvah program last year through our new creative arts-based family education curriculum. Most importantly, it was a truly fulfilling experience to welcome our families back into our building and filling our classrooms and sanctuary with so much laughter and joy.
This year, we will be growing our B’Mitzvah program. In addition to our Tanakh and Siddur lessons and projects for fifth grade families, and our Wimple and Symbols of the Covenant projects and lessons for sixth graders, we will be adding a special class created for our fourth grade families. We are looking forward to launching this program with our youngest Hineni students and their families as they begin their journey towards their B’nei Mitzvah ceremony. We will be sending more information about it as the year progresses.
As always, we are honored that you have chosen Temple Sinai’s Religious School as part of this milestone moment for your family and grateful for your continued support. We cannot wait to spend this meaningful learning time with all of you and look forward to another fulfilling year together.

Creating Sacred Community
As face answers to face in water, so does one man’s heart to another
- Proverbs 27:19
In 1952, anthropologist Mark Zborowsky published a pathbreaking study of Jewish life in the Eastern European shtetl. It was no accident that they named their book, Life Is with People. In this book, the authors described Jewish life in the ghettos; it has been characterized by communal participation and involvement, a religious and social enterprise that had been lived in the collective, in the kehillah (community). In rabbinic commentaries, we learn that the first Jewish communal project was the construction of the Tabernacle in the wilderness; its purpose was clear: to create a dwelling space for the Living God.
Today, at Temple Sinai, the purpose of creating community is precisely the same as it was for our ancestors. We choose to join together to celebrate our joys, to share our sorrows, perform acts of loving kindness, and simply be with one another because in our hearts, we know that by acting together, we experience a glimpse of the Divine reality that gives meaning to our lives and eternal values to our actions.
To that end, this year we will make a concerted effort to do even more to build community among our Religious School students, their families, and our faculty.
These are just a few of the Religious School programs that will help us bond and connect : Schmooze & T’fillah, Sharing Shabbat and B’Mitzvah.
We are committed to teaching our children that when we join as a community, we are not lonely sojourners on the path of life, but rather companions traveling together. This is what we want them to learn: that in our kehillah we share with one another the hardships and the happiness, help each other surmount the inevitable obstacles, and pass along the wisdom we gather along the way to the ones who will come after us, just as we who journey now benefit from the experiences of those who walked this way before.
In this year of 5784, may each of us be a source of strength for our shared kehillah kedosha, our sacred community of students, parents, grandparents, and teachers. Created in the image of God, when we gaze into the faces of one another, we glimpse the holiness that is in each of us.
I wish each of you and your families a year of Shalom U’vrahcha, peace and blessings.
L’Shanah Tova,
Cantor-Educator Elena Schwartz

DID YOU KNOW?
The Cemetery Committee of Temple Sinai needs your help in locating former congregants or their next of kin with whom we have lost contact. The temple needs to determine whether these individuals expect to use the cemetery plots that have been reserved for them in the future.
Please reach out to Committee Member Larry Krasnoff (516.484.2276 or larkarch@yahoo.com) or Temple Member Services Manager, Betty Brandel (516.621.6800 or bbrandel@mysinai.org) with any current contact information you may have for the following families. Last known cities/towns are provided below:

Temple Sinai has recently acquired a limited number of graves in our sections at New Montefiore Cemetery in the areas that were previously sold out. These have been graciously donated back to the temple by families who have relocated and find they can no longer use them. Rather than wait until it becomes a matter of some urgency, we want to give our congregants an opportunity to explore their options. We have groupings of up to four graves that can become family plots.
If you are interested, please contact Betty Brandel in the temple office. Any questions you have are welcome.
