Coming Back to Temple with Mixed Emotions Last year, the sanctuary was empty for the High Holy Days. This year, we will gather, albeit with masks and social distancing, and fewer of us together than usual. We’re getting there, thank God. And that is cause for gratitude. Thanks to the vaccine, we can join together with our families and friends and glimpse the light at the end of this dark pandemic tunnel. Still, we greet these holy days with mixed emotions: Over 600,000 souls taken away from us, all the pain and fear, the disappointments, the cancelled simchas, the months and months of seclusion from loved ones. We will carry all that emotional weight with us into the new year. Liberation and joy coupled with sadness and grief, and hopefully a new perspective on life’s precarious and fragile unpredictability--that we cannot take life’s blessings for granted, including our beloved Temple Sinai. After all that we’ve lost, this year’s gatherings will be more precious. And so we will gather with grateful hearts, and with heavy hearts, and we will try to reconcile them. Psalm 30 anticipated our mixed emotions with these words:

You turn my mourning into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing Your praises and not be silent. It is really a prayer. That we climb the emotional mountain from sadness and loss to the joyful summit where we can again embrace life and all its blessings. To laugh again. To celebrate again. To dance again. Our High Holy Day gatherings will, I pray, inspire this emotional journey for us all. Coming Up: Gleanings in October: Harvesting to Help Please join us Sunday, October 24 from 10:00am-12:00pm for this very popular activity at the Garden of Eden in Riverhead. There we will harvest the vegetables that will then be donated to those in need. It’s a fun and fulfilling mitzvah for all ages. Let’s Warm Them Up Drive Please save your warm coats, hats, gloves, and scarves to drop off at the temple during October and November. These items warm those in need both on the outside and the inside, showing them they are not invisible and they are not alone. Cooking for a Cause Everyone’s favorite event will take place on November 12. You don’t want to miss this! Please watch for our email in October, which will provide all the specifics, including how to sign up. Together, we each prepare a full meal, then deliver it to someone who is homebound. While cooking and kibitzing, we remember the smiles and huge appreciation that stay with us long after we complete our deliveries. November’s Need During November, we will have a food drive to benefit Hatzilu. Appropriately, hatzilu means “rescue” and this local organization aids those in need. My View From the Bimah Shana Tova, I am Amy Braunstein, President of Temple Sinai. I hope you and your family are well. For those who don’t know me, my family, which includes my husband Richard, and sons, Andrew and Michael, have been members of Temple Sinai for the past 22 years. During that time, I have actively participated in many temple committees, served on the temple board, and most recently, was Executive Vice President working with Michelle Golden. Temple Sinai has been a true second home for my entire family and I am deeply committed to supporting our temple, Jewish values, and our community. I am very excited as I begin my first year as Temple President, and am committed to doing everything possible to ensure that we remain a strong and vibrant congregation. I follow in the footsteps of many dedicated past presidents who have all contributed to making Temple Sinai a place where every heart has a home. Michelle Golden, our immediate past president, demonstrated extraordinary leadership and courage, as she led us through the most difficult times we could have imagined, always ensuring that we could continue to learn, gather (mostly virtually), and maintain nearly all of our temple programs. I look forward to working together with our new Executive Board which includes Allen Geller, Robyn Corbin, Andy Kraus, Jeff Sklar, and Liz Neale, as we step forward to safely bring back our in-person temple programming. I remain optimistic that much of what I write about will hold true in the coming months as we continue to face new variants and changing state and CDC guidelines. After nearly sixteen months of attending Friday night services on ZOOM, it was a true “religious experience” to re-enter our beautiful sanctuary as we opened the doors to our community and worshiped together. Seeing friends and congregants with our amazing clergy leading the service was truly moving and reminded all of us that Temple Sinai is so special. I pray that our beautiful temple sanctuary will remain open to safely observe all of the upcoming holidays and Shabbats.

It is with great joy that I will be sitting on the bimah this Rosh Hashanah with our Clergy. On behalf of our entire

congregation, our deepest thanks to Rabbi White, Rabbi Schachter, and Cantors Sergei and Elena Schwartz, for shepherding us through the pandemic. They helped us maintain our faith, led us on our path, and made sure we stayed connected with our temple and each other. We are truly blessed to have such talented and devoted clergy who always put our temple families first. This has been a very hard year for many of us, but Temple Sinai and its leadership have done a wonderful job to support all of us in every way possible. I would like to welcome Lee Mirrer, our new Executive Director, who has taken over from Ali Stamm. Please stop by and say hello or look for her at services and introduce yourself. Among her many responsibilities, Lee will be ensuring our safe return to a new normal over the coming months and is available for any of your questions or concerns. I remain extremely hopeful that Rosh Hashanah will be a new beginning for all of us this year. The High Holy Days are a time for reflection as we ask to be inscribed for another year in the Book of Life. It seems even more meaningful this year than in any I can remember. I am grateful for many things while at the same time I recognize just how tragic this year has been for many. Last year, I spent the High Holy Days at home, watching services on Zoom with family members, masked up, and eating our Holiday dinner outdoors. This year, we will be together in the synagogue, praying with our temple community. I look forward to seeing everyone at the many wonderful occasions and holidays ahead. Welcome Home! Alongside all my colleagues, I am so excited to welcome you home to Temple Sinai this fall! After what has been a very difficult and dark time, the Adult Engagement Committee has put together a diverse range of programs that we hope will engage, enlighten, and inspire you throughout the upcoming program year. Our first program, in late September after the High Holy Days, will be Adam Stern, who grew up at Temple Sinai. He will be talking about his new, highly touted book, Committed: Dispatches from a Psychiatrist in Training. We will also have author visits from Meryl Ain, who will speak about her book The Takeaway Men, as well as from Jewish Book Council authors Leah Garrett and Laura Leibman. Fall will also bring a visit from Pat Young, Special Professor of Immigration Law at Hofstra University; a program on how to create a festive Thanksgiving menu and table; a two-part series on Judaica in America; and a screening of the film Who Will Write Our History, followed by a Zoom talk with Roberta Grossman, the film’s director. We will also continue our meaningful Adult/Teen Conversations, now called Building Bridges, throughout the year, and new classes with our incomparable clergy will begin in the fall.

Later in the program year, we will hear from Nancy Traeger, who will delight us with her art history lectures, and once again, we will enjoy Light Classical Concerts. We eagerly await longanticipated visits from poet/liturgist Alden Solovy, who will spend a weekend at Temple Sinai in March, and in late April, Christian Picciolini, the reformed violent extremist turned peace advocate, who was supposed to have spoken at Temple Sinai in March 2020, mere days after lockdown began. Additionally, this fall, after the High Holy Days, we will launch Sinai Tribes, small, congregant-led groups that will bring people together based upon either their stage of life or shared area of interest. Sinai Tribes will be a new, deeply meaningful way for our members to connect with each another on a small scale. It was the first big event at the temple since the start of the pandemic, and everyone was thrilled to be able to see each other outside of a Zoom program! At the beginning of August, the women of Friend of a Friend enjoyed a special summer evening meeting at Lori Yaspan’s house. They couldn’t have been happier to reunite on this beautiful night.

TEMPLE SINAI BROTHERHOOD DISCOVERS EISENHOWER PARK’S BEST KEPT SECRET Not many people know that hidden away in Hempstead, on the southwest corner of Eisenhower Park, lie several lawn bowling courts. This facility is one of only two lawn bowling areas in New York State (the other one is in Central Park) and home to the Sunrise Lawn Bowling Club. On Sunday, July 11, the Brotherhood of Temple Sinai hosted a lawn bowling clinic conducted by Larry Krasnoff, a member of both Brotherhood and the Sunrise Lawn Bowling Club. Lawn bowling, a variation of its distant cousin, bocce, involves rolling a “bowl,” a ball weighted on one side, to get closest to a smaller white target ball known as the jack. The game is played by competing teams of two or three players for a set limit of ten “ends” or “frames.” The sport requires equal parts of hand-eye coordination, experience, and luck! It is said that lawn bowling takes 15 minutes to learn the rules and years to become proficient. The sport dates back to its introduction to the American colonies by European settlers in the 1600s. Several Brotherhood members attended, playing this game for the first time. After a brief explanation of the terms, goals and strategies, and some time practicing with the bowls made available by the club, the Brotherhood players separated into teams and played a competitive game. As in any sport tried for the first time, the results were inconsistent. But all members agreed on the fun they had in trying this new sport. The Sunrise Lawn Bowling Club extended an invitation to all Brotherhood members to consider joining in play at its regular bowling dates - Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays starting at 1:00 pm. As Rabbi Hillel taught, there is an inexorable law in Jewish history: without Jewish learning, Judaism cannot survive. Wherever Jewish community failed to kindle the lamp of learning and relied solely on worship and philanthropy it ultimately disappeared. Jewish learning is a major component of Jewish life and there is a good reason that the Torah requires us to learn. As a people, we traveled around the world looking for a safe place to live. Temple Sinai Religious School has a rich and varied curriculum. Our program is enriched by the use of technology, music, art, and Jewish cooking. Our outstanding faculty inspire our students to think and create in both formal and informal settings. Students and their parents are encouraged to participate in our video, music, and art projects. Each classroom is furnished with cutting-edge technology and our dynamic ShalomLearning curriculum provides our students with access to videos, short stories, and action-based projects that keep lessons alive, fun, and engaging. Jewish cooking with Morah Paula is returning this school year to allow our students to, once again, explore a wide range of Jewish holiday recipes from around the world. Our Judaic curriculum encompasses a vast array of subject areas. The program provides students with an opportunity to study Torah, the holidays, the value of Mitzvot, Jewish ethics, the Holocaust & Jewish Resistance, and Israel. We strive to instill love and respect for the Hebrew language. The manifold goals of our Hebrew classes are to teach students to read, develop basic knowledge of Hebrew grammar and vocabulary, and feel comfortable participating in T’filah (prayer). The T’filah component of the Hebrew program consists of classroom, small group instruction, individual lessons, and weekly services. The weekday Religious School services and annual Milestone Shabbat worship provide our students with opportunities to participate in and become sh’lichei tzibur ( leaders of T’filah). At TSR Religious School, we affirm our tradition’s view that it takes a loving family, in the context of a vibrant Jewish community, to raise a Jewish child. We understand that we have a responsibility to help parents make connections with other congregational families and strengthen their ties to our

Monday, October 4 or Tuesday, October 5 Parents are asked to join our first sessions on Monday or Tuesday. At that time, we will introduce our Mitzvah Makers program and curriculum. Parents and students will have an opportunity to meet with the temple clergy as well as the Mitzvah Makers teachers. At this meeting, we will also explain the B’nei Mitzvah program in detail and will walk you through the Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation process at Temple Sinai. Together we will explore the significance of Bar/Bat Mitzvah and learn about the tools our students will be using to prepare for this special day.

Consecration Sunday, September 27 6:30pm Consecration is the ceremony in which we honor new students at the start of their Jewish education. All new students from this year and last year will be honored on the bimah with a blessing from the clergy and will receive a miniature Torah following the service.

Chanukah Boutique & Latke Parties Friend of a Friend/Chaverot will be holding their Chanukah Boutique for students in grades K-6 November 8–10. Your children will be able to shop with their class for Chanukah gifts for their families. All items are from $1–$10. These wonderful women will also be sponsoring Latke Parties for our students in grades K-6 during religious school hours November 29-December 2.
