What Will Be On Your Seder Plate This Year: Imagining Passover Post-October 7

I am writing this piece during the week of Tu Bishvat, our winter holiday that celebrates the trees, and our potential for growth and renewal. In our ECC and our Religious School, we mark this holiday by planting parsley seeds into little pots, with the hope that they will grow into the parsley for our Seder plates in April. Even in the heart of winter, we make preparations for our Spring festival of Passover.

Such an act of hope and planning has made me think more deeply about the symbols of our Seder table, and how they both connect us to our ancestors’ story of liberation while also holding a mirror up to our lives today. While we always prepare the parsley for Carpas, connecting us to our past, we often add items that spark conversation about current life and the ways in which we still seek freedom in our world. For example, some of our homes have oranges on our Seder plates, to remind us of the continued fight for LGBTQ+ rights. This past year, we saw sunflower seeds and beets on Seder plates, representing the plight of the Ukrainian people and their continued fight for freedom and peace. There have been symbols on our Seder plates that remind us of the struggles of refugees, or those living without homes.

year? And what are the symbols of a better world that will help to motivate us to work toward it?

Perhaps this year, as we continue to pray for peace and healing in Israel, we leave an empty seat for those who remain missing, or whose lives were taken too soon. Maybe we include the testimony of survivors from October 7, serving as their witnesses and their advocates. Perhaps we bring the names of civilians in Israel and Gaza, who have been displaced from their homes, or an olive branch that reminds us of our continued prayers for peace. And maybe this year, we need to remind ourselves that, despite the pain and violence we have experienced as a community, the Jewish people are resilient and strong. We could place a Magen David necklace on our Seder plate, as a symbol of Jewish pride and as an act of resistance against anyone who wants us to hide or be ashamed of who we are. Perhaps the simple act of having the Seder is symbolic enough, for in spite of so much hate, we continue to gather again and again, celebrating our people and our story.

Every year, we have an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the journey from oppression to redemption and the work we still have to do in order to make redemption real for all of us. So, what are the symbols we need to bring to our Seder table this year, in the months after October 7? What aspects of brokenness do we need to lift up and reflect on this

Spring is coming, and with it the festival of our redemption. Personally, I look forward to spending the next weeks in careful observation as tiny parsley sprouts on my window sill, and as the days get longer with each passing moon cycle. When we gather around our Seder table, may we feel inspired and strengthened by our ancestors’ journey, knowing that together, we will continue to strive for peace and freedom. Rabbi Ilana Schachter

The View from the President’s Chair

I love the spring! It is a time of renewal, of rebirth, of growth and of change for all things including the Jewish people. Spring is when plants begin to grow again, the buds come out, the ground begins to soften after the frigid winter, the sun rises earlier, and flowers begin to bloom. Of course, those of us with allergies have them reborn, as well. We also track mud into the house; before you know it will be too hot again.

Passover is one of the most widely celebrated Jewish holidays. It commemorates the Israelites’ exodus from slavery to freedom. For me, it is the rebirth of Judaism. Yes, we escaped our captors, the Egyptians, but we as a people, we were reborn in the desert. We received the ten commandments; we became a nation and found a new homeland. It took years, but the Jewish people were renewed.

Spring also brings us Purim. It is, perhaps, the jolliest holiday of the Jewish year! Purim is another example of a beginning

or renewal. Esther was married to the King of Persia, but she hid the fact that she was Jewish from him. Haman, his not-sonice advisor (has anyone seen my grogger?) wanted to rid the kingdom of the Jews. Esther prevailed upon her husband by suggesting that she, too, should be eliminated. This event was another beginning for the Jews.

We, as a people, are continually renewing and changing. In order to survive, one needs to constantly grow, adapt, and change. If we had not done this over and over again, we would not be here. This sense of renewal should also be a part of our everyday life. I like to think spring is time for my soul to grow and for me to continue to learn.

Without our quest for knowledge, we cannot continue to evolve. During this season of the year, we, like all other things, should renew and grow. For if we do not grow, we will recede. Our destiny is before us. This year, look within and help yourself, your family and our temple grow and bloom.

Happy spring,

Spring Ahead! WEDNESDAY, MAY 15 7:30pm at TEMPLE SINAI ANNUAL MEETING

The Art of Purim

Though it dates to the fifth century BCE, the story of Purim is a perennial inspiration for artists who address biblical subject matter.

Told in the book of Esther (Megillah Esther), the Purim story commemorates the deliverance of Jews in Persia from the annihilation planned by Haman, the trusted yet evil advisor of King Ahasuerus. The heroes of the story are Esther, a member of the king’s harem, and her uncle, Mordecai, who refused to bow down to Haman, thus incurring his wrath. King Ahasuerus favored Esther and made her queen, unaware she was Jewish. Upon learning of Haman’s evil plot to destroy the Jews, Mordecai entreated Esther to speak to the king on behalf of her people. After three days of fasting, Esther went to the king unsummoned – a brazen act punishable by death – and in so doing, saved the Jewish people from annihilation. King Ahasuerus sentenced Haman and his 10 sons to death.

On the right are a few examples of contemporary artists (i.e. post-1960) who have created works of art about Purim.

With its powerful narrative about bravery in the face of persecution, the Purim story continues to resonate deeply today.

May we all be inspired by Esther’s example.

Brotherhood continues to be a vibrant and significant arm of Temple Sinai. As of this writing, we have already been enriched with three evenings of Rabbi White’s Scotch and Sacred Text. It is always a special night when the Rabbi can share his knowledge and insights into the Torah with us. Special thanks to our Executive VP, Gabe Markiz and to Keith Niesenbaum for being gracious hosts. The next Scotch and Sacred Text will be held on Tuesday, April 16 at 7:30pm. Richard Blatt’s networking group, CONNECT, continues to grow in popularity. The evening meetings now include an interesting guest speaker (a member of our own congregation!) plus, a forum discussion afterwards. As an outgrowth of this successful program, we are considering hosting Health Forums focused on men’s health Issues. We envision these forums to be a place where medical professionals from our temple community would deliver a presentation on their area of expertise followed by a Q&A. While this is still in the discussion stages, there is a great amount of interest in seeing this program come to fruition. There have also been discussions about adding activities such as a bike riding club and a book discussion club.

Our children, our future

Knowledge is Power!

During the Passover Seder, nestled within the Haggadah, there is a meaningful instruction that resonates deeply within us. It states: Even if we are all wise, well-informed, and experienced, we are still commanded to tell the story of our escape from Egypt. And those who elaborate on this story are to be commended.

This passage is more than a simple directive; it captures a crucial aspect of Jewish life – the ongoing process of learning and teaching. This journey surpasses age, knowledge, and experience, underscoring a core Jewish value: our unending commitment to both intellectual and spiritual growth and our duty to share this growth with others.

A question frequently arises: What is the key to the Jewish community’s enduring strength? The answer lies within this passage. We are a community dedicated to lifelong learning –not just academically, but in ways that deeply impact our personal and spiritual lives. This learning is a shared journey. Just as we never stop learning, we never stop teaching others. We never stop growing, and it is our duty to assist those who wish to grow along with us.

Perhaps that is the true goal of a synagogue community. People who have been learning for a longer period of time pass on their knowledge to those new to learning. Older children transmit what they know to younger children. Seasoned lay leaders help those serving the community for the first time. Those with skills and knowledge in a particular area of expertise teach those who are less familiar. All the while, every one of us continues to look to those who have more learning, more experience, and more life lessons to share with us as we all make our way. We are all learning, we are all teachers. After all, the tradition teaches that even if you know but one letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and you teach that to another person, you are to be praised.

In the spirit of this tradition, our community has been highlighting the talents and skills of its capable members, fostering a culture of mutual education and enrichment.

Our teen madrichim play a pivotal role at Temple Sinai, actively participating in various activities. Many assist in our Religious

School, sharing their Hebrew language knowledge and helping younger students read prayers and blessings in preparation for their upcoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Every year, Tracy Zimmerman, our “Sinai Challah Queen,” conducts a challahmaking workshop for our third-grade parents. This hands-on experience is a cherished Jewish tradition, allowing parents and children to connect deeply with their heritage.

Tracy Zimmerman and Amy Zuflacht, Co-Chairs of our Religious School Committee, are both certified teachers and former school administrators. They ensure that our Religious School curriculum, teacher training, B’Mitzvah program, family education days, and all extracurricular activities provide the highest quality Jewish education opportunities for our students and their families.

Our Friend of a Friend group encourages community members to share their valuable professional skills. For instance, Esther Fortunoff presented an engaging workshop where she shared the history of her family’s business and taught us about the diamond industry’s innovations and secrets to finding the right heirloom. Caroline Lituchy led a writer’s workshop that has become a source of literary enrichment, while Amy Kula offered an informative class on first aid, helping many acquire essential skills.

We’ve also hosted inspiring talks aimed at promoting greater involvement in philanthropy. Ira Sorkin and Carol Rotenberg have played active roles in our Friday night series, Celebrating Jewish Peoplehood. These notable speakers taught our community about new opportunities through their philanthropic endeavors for the American Friends of the Hebrew University and Hadassah.

Our upcoming Celebration of Jewish People, Art & Music, promises to be a delightful experience, featuring works by many talented Sinai members. The committee planning this show includes professional artists and art historians, ensuring a rich and engaging cultural event. We are so thankful to have Bert Kraus, Ginny Jordan, Donna Liebowitz, & Jackie Covey at the helm.

SCRIBE March-April-May 2024 23

Personally, I always look forward to the guided museum tours organized by the Adult Engagement Committee, when our very own art gurus - Jackie Covey and Ronna Neiderman, share with us their love of art and outstanding expertise as our guides.

And the list of learning opportunities, activities and contributors goes on and on.

In this vibrant exchange, each person is both a learner and a teacher. We strive to learn from those ahead of us while also extending a hand to those following our path. It’s a harmonious relationship that strengthens our Jewish identity. This way the story of Passover becomes more than a historical narrative; it is a living testament to our commitment to learning and the ongoing transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next. It’s a narrative that continually shapes our identity, our community, and our approach to life, inspiring us to recognize and celebrate the contributions of each member in our midst.

At Temple Sinai Religious School. we have always made it a priority to share our Zionist pride and love for Israel with our students and families. This past summer, we partnered up with the online platform IsraelLINK, which is a comprehensive and interactive curriculum that “promotes and elevates Israel education within Jewish day schools and supplementary middle school programs across North America.”.

As we continue to grapple with the events of October 7, we constantly look for ways to strengthen our Kehillah (community) through a shared love and support for Israel. Starting February 5, our entire Religious School began working with this new and exciting curriculum. For six weeks, our students will explore a different unit and experience the rich and wonderful culture that Israel has to offer:

Week 1: Israel: Head, Heart, and Hands - Our students will have an opportunity to come up with questions, explore their feelings about Israel, and come up with ways they feel they can support our homeland. This project will be revisited throughout the program to allow our students to continue processing all the new information.

Week 2: Middot - Israel is a land for all while guided by Jewish values. Our students will get a first look at what those values are and explore how they relate to their individual connection to Israel.

Week 3: Israel Geography - Where is Israel? Who lives there? IsraelLINK provides a multitude of interactive maps that cover everything from the population in Israel to its position geographically. Additionally, our youngest students will have an opportunity to take a virtual tour of cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, while our oldest will engage in critical thinking about the rich diversity in Israel.

Week 4: Zionism 101 - From Herzl to Ben-Gurion, and everyone in between! How did we come to Israel, who are the key players, and how many versions of Hatikvah are there?

Week 5: Values in Action - Each grade will explore a different value that is key to Israeli life. While our Torah Explorers learn more about Hatzalah and Pikuach Nefesh (saving a soul), our older students will learn about organizations like IsrAid and values such as Leket Israel (rescuing surplus food for those in need).

Week 6: Closing Activity - We will return to our opening activity to see how many questions we can now answer, how our feelings have changed, and decide different projects that each class can do to help Israel, bringing our curriculum full circle.

In addition to our planned lessons, we will be including experiential components to our school such as modern Hebrew words, fun facts about Israel, and even a virtual Escape Room where our students will be helping David Ben-Gurion find the Declaration of Independence.

Our wonderful faculty has been working hard, participating in trainings and preparing themselves to make this an unforgettable experience. In addition to the IsraelLINK platform, we have curated a list of incredible resources from organizations such as Amplify Israel, Stand With Us, The iCenter, The Jewish Education Project, and more.

We are thrilled to be introducing this new and exciting program to our Religious School as we say together Am Israel Chai!

Our families met in the Sanctuary for t’filah with Cantors Elena and Sergei Schwartz. Our families learned about Tu B’Shevat with Morah Robin, Morah Ellie, Morah Elinor and Morah Diane through discussion and projects. They collected tzedkah to honor the students by planting trees in Israel through the Jewish National Fund. To celebrate their learning together, families enjoyed different fruits that are customarily eaten during Tu B’Shevat

January was a busy and exciting month for our BMitzvah Family Education programs. Our 5th graders had an opportunity to learn more about the evolution of the Tanakh. From the five books of the bible to Prophets, Psalms, and everything in between, we had the chance to explore all the details and unique pieces of what makes Jewish history so steeped in

A Family Bar/Bat Mitzvah Journey wonderful tradition. We had an opportunity to take an interactive and fun deep dive into these chapters of our history and learn more not only about the Torah portions that they have been assigned for their B’nei Mitzvah, but all about the context and additional rabbinical stories around it.

Our 6th graders began working on their Wimples! These Wimples will be used during their B’nei Mitzvah ceremony to bind the Torah they will be reading from and then displaying for their family and friends. We had a wonderful time learning more about its role in this important milestone, listening to Israeli music, and crafting to our heart’s content! This program was such a success that we have added a third session, so stay tuned to sign up.

Dina’s Teen Talk

What a Winter It’s Been!

It’s been an AMAZING Winter in the Teen Department here at Temple Sinai. In addition to our standard and beloved teen programs, we took our love of community service, social action, and FUN across state lines with TWO INCREDIBLE teen trips for the first time in years!

Here’s a brief overview of where we went and the amazing times had by all!

8th & 9th Grade New Orleans Service Learning Adventure: 38 Teens. 4 days. 15 hours of Community Service. A Whole Lotta Fun. Memories to Last a Lifetime!

On Friday January 12, we headed off on an adventure….

As we continued our Saturday afternoon we spotted a pre-Mardi Gras Parade AND a Second Line! We explored the French Quarter!

On Saturday January 13, the Service Learning truly began with the Green Project of New Orleans. Serving New Orleans since 1994, their mission is to promote a culture of creative reuse by diverting usable materials from landfills and cultivating respect for their value. By selling used items and teaching about reuse, they are able to provide affordable materials to the community in the Lower Ninth Ward, host low-cost and free workshops, keep usable goods out of the landfills and nearby waterways, preserve historic architectural pieces, and educate local residents about environmental issues.

Sunday morning the fun continued with a WHOLE NEW EXPERIENCE at a Southern Gospel Church!

28 SCRIBE March-April-May 2024

We followed that up with more community service at the Center for Sustainable Engagement & Development in the Lower Ninth Ward. The Center focuses on coastal rehabilitation, greening the built environment, and increasing food security by lifting up and strategically reinforcing community-driven goals throughout their work of creating an economically, culturally, and environmentally sustainable Lower Ninth Ward.

Sunday night we headed back to the Quarter for dinner and some spooky fun!

We laughed, we danced, we slept (a little)...and we headed home, tired but fulfilled and with memories and friendships for a lifetime!

10th & 11th Grade Washington D.C Trip with Religious Action Center’s L’Taken Social Justice Seminar!

On Friday, January 26, we headed off on an exciting trip to the Religious Action Center’s L’Taken Social Justice Seminar where we met teens from synagogues from all across the United States! As soon as we arrived the learning and fun began… .

By Saturday morning we had made lots of new friends in like-minded Social Justice-oriented Jewish teens!

SCRIBE March-April-May 2024 29

And took in the sights…

And went ice skating… Had dinner in Georgetown after a little shopping and exploring…

We ate LOTS of DC Cupcakes and hung out in the hall with our chaperones who made sure we didn’t sneak out…..(but we did still try!)...

The learning continued on Sunday but we stepped up our game and started learning about specific issues that mattered a lot to us….

We took a moment to remember our legacy, which informs our advocacy work, by spending the afternoon at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. It was an incredibly moving experience.

With so much motivation, we selected our lobbying topics and got to work writing speeches to present at our Senate offices…

Monday morning we headed to Capitol Hill, determined to make a difference!

And then we headed home feeling accomplished, knowing the work is not complete but that we began and will continue the fight, with new friends and so many inside jokes…

And closed out Shabbat with Havdallah at the Jefferson Memorial with 300 of our new best friends…

We’re launching new Spring Mini-Classes with Rabbi Schachter & Dina, continuing our amazing regularly occurring programs, and throwing in some one-off fun too! Interested in something you see below? Email Dina at Dkwasnicki@mysinai.org to sign up!

• Judaism & The Good Place

Pobody’s nerfect, as Eleanor Shellstrop (played by Kristen Bell) would say, but this class comes pretty close! Over four weeks, we’ll explore clips and quotes from the 2016-2020 fantasy comedy The Good Place, which asked big questions about morality, the nature of good and evil, the afterlife and more. This mini-class will leave you laughing and pondering life’s big questions for a long time, while exploring Jewish perspectives!

Sundays 10am-11am, 4-week class Dates: 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 4/7

• Rapper’s Torah: Ancient Wisdom & Modern Beats

Drake’s Jewish half is more present in his rhymes than the average listener can perceive… and perhaps even more than Drake, himself, realizes. In fact, the Rap genre as a whole is one rich in societal commentary, not unlike the Torah. Join us for four weeks as we draw connections between the wisdom of Jewish tradition and the words of Drake, Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, and more.

Tuesdays 6:30-8pm, 4-week class Dates: 3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2

• Influencing for Change: Climate Change, Social Media Activism & Judaism

Join Social Media Influencer and Environmental Activist @TheTrashwalker, Anna Sacks, for this four-week discussion taking a Jewish lens on climate change and environmental advocacy. In our time together, we’ll look at the tangible changes that can be made on an individual, communal, local government and national levels, and why it’s so important we make those changes now.

Thursdays 6-7:30pm, 4-week class Dates: 3/28, 4/4,4/11, 4/18

• A Small Light: The Story of Miep Gies (A Holocaust Discussion)

Join Rabbi Schachter, beloved Holocaust Educator Abbie Laskey, and special guests, for this intergenerational viewing and discussion of the recent critically acclaimed series, “A Small Light.”. This series tells the true story of Miep Gies, a woman who risked everything to save others, and hid Anne Frank’s family from the Nazi regime. Hers is a remarkable tale of righteousness, resilience, resistance, and ultimately, humanity.

Day & time TBD by participants, 4-week class

Welcome to Paige’s Junior Youth Group Page!

Hey, Junior Youth Group Families!

The last few months have been a blast as we made so many memories (and messes!) together. Some highlights include the girls bonding over some New Year’s reflections (both literal and figurative as we chatted and decorated mirrors), the boys playfully debating over Monday Night Football, and all of us joining together for some competitive Bubble Wrap Olympics. Your kids never have a shortage of energy and excitement and it’s been my pleasure spending these Monday nights with them. Hope they are getting pumped for everything we still have in store for them!

Check out some pictures from our times together...
