The High Holy Days have just come to a close, and we are now fully immersed in the new Jewish year. Hopefully, we were all touched by some aspect of the holiday experience and we were moved to improve our lives in meaningful ways. With every new year comes new resolutions. According to statistical data, the following are the top ten resolutions made each year by Americans (not in any particular order): 1. Enjoy life to the fullest. 2. Get organized. 3. Spend less, save more. 4. Lose weight. 5. Exercise more. 6. Learn something exciting. 7. Quit smoking. 8. Help others to achieve their dreams. 9. Discover love. 10. Spend more time with family.

The “Days of Awe” may be behind us, but the “Days of Action” can still lie ahead. Now is the time for new beginnings. Now is the time to commit to the change we wish to make in our lives. Let us push ourselves, as well as each other, so that we may all move forward in accomplishing great things. May 5776 be a year of tenacity and promise for all of us.

Save the date! Installation of Beth Schafer Friday, November 20, 6:30 pm Mark your calendar to celebrate the formal installation of Beth Schafer as a member of our clergy and our Bunzl Family Cantorial Chair. This promises to be a very special Shabbat service!

Join 5,000 Reform Leaders at the URJ Biennial 2015 in Orlando!

URJ Biennial 2015 from November 4-8, 2015, in Orlando, Florida From Scott Zucker, Temple Sinai President: Temple Sinai is gathering its Clergy, staff and lay leaders as a group to attend Biennial and I want to invite you to participate. I can tell you from experience, that after the workshops, lectures and Shabbat services with 5,000 Reform Jews from around the country, you will be forever changed as to your connection with your synagogue and your knowledge and support for the Reform movement. As a further motivator for participating, the Berman Leadership fund is offering four (4) scholarships for first-time Biennial attendees which will cover your registration for the event ($500.00). I hope you will join us. Please read the information below to learn more. If you have any questions or want to inquire about a scholarship, please contact me at President@templesinaiatlanta.org. Leadership Development, Networking, Jewish Learning, and How-Tos to Strengthen Our Congregation Will Be Center Stage With the theme of “Bringing Congregations Together,” join with hundreds of others from across North America at the

URJ Biennial 2015.

templesinaiatlanta.org | 404 . 252 . 3073

Perhaps one or more of these reflects your own striving

for self-improvement in the year ahead. Whatever our personal goals may be, we must remember that efforts to change require dedication over time. Studies show that with each passing week, fewer and fewer people maintain their well-intentioned resolutions. If statistics are correct, by March, more than half of us will have completely given up on our fresh ambitions. What does this say about the seriousness of our goals? What does it say about our resolve? Will we allow ourselves to be among those who throw in the towel? Will we succumb to old patterns and relinquish the opportunity to become our best selves?

Board of Trustees Message | Sari Earl,, Vice President, Community Priceless moments can sneak up on you at the most unexpected times. In volunteering at Sinai, I’ve gotten to experience unanticipated precious moments within our congregational family that I will remember always. As an example, along with three other members of the Hineini Committee, I volunteered to call certain congregants who had been identified as possibly having physical or health reasons that might impede their ability to attend High Holy Day Services. Our task was to connect with the congregant, see if that person needed any help attending High Holy Day Services, or, if they couldn’t attend, offer to get that person the new Machzor (Prayer Book) so they could follow the services streaming online. All of the congregants I spoke with seemed to appreciate being contacted and recognized that Sinai members were reaching out to them because we care. One congregant confessed, “I used to be the one helping others, and now I’m the one who needs the help.” I replied, “That’s why we’re here.” Everyone at some point in their lives needs a caring community. It is a privilege to be able to do that for others, and when I have needed it, I have felt enormous gratitude for our clergy, our staff and our congregational family for helping my family and me. Sinai is an institution with a board, officers, bylaws, etc., yet it is so much more because of the powerfully Jewish spirit of generosity and kindness to others that our congregational family values.

2015 Atlanta PRIDE Parade

Sunday, October 11, Noon, Bus leaves Temple Sinai Blooming with PRIDE | Tami Schwartz Giant paper poppies of all colors and sizes- some fifteen feet tall, and several feet across. Of all the wonderful sights and sounds of this great event, those amazing flowers are my favorite memory from when I joined over 60 Temple Sinai members as one of nearly 200 Jews from 36 Jewish organizations, forming the largest single contingent to march in last year’s Atlanta Pride parade.

That widespread support led to so many things we can be proud of over the last year. We came together in an unprecedented manner, helping bolster the climate for positive change. The Southern Jewish Resource Network for Gender and Sexual Diversity (SOJOURN) was recognized with the prestigious Phillip Rush Community Builder Award for their tireless efforts to make this happen. And at this year’s parade, they have been honored as Grand Marshals. When we show our support for Atlanta Pride and SOJOURN, we get to be those beautiful flowers. We get to create a garden where we live out our Jewish ideals of valuing everyone for who they are. I hope you will join us Sunday, October 11th - we’ll be the ones at the front of the parade!!! Join Temple Sinai and over 40 Jewish organizations as we march in the annual Atlanta Pride Parade on Sunday, October 11th. A bus will leave Temple Sinai at 12 noon. Please RSVP on the Temple Sinai website so we can reserve your spot. Questions? Ask tamaramschwartz@hotmail.com.

templesinaiatlanta.org | 404 . 252 . 3073

At first glance, the flowers looked like simple outsized decorations. They were vividly painted, and easy to notice brightening up the parade route. As we got closer, though, we could see that they served a much more important purpose. You see, a few protesters showed up, bearing signs with hateful messages in a vain attempt to mar the event. But the thoughtful florists gently stood in front of them, quietly and peacefully letting everyone know that we believe in love, inclusion, and support across the spectrum of gender and sexual orientation.

Caroline and Isaac Goldman, daughter and son of Lynn and Ronnie Goldman, became B’nei Mitzvah at Camp Barney on August 22, 2015. For her T.A.G project, Caroline’s chose to volunteer with several different organizations including the Berman Commons and working at a party for underprivileged children with the organization Creating Connected Communities. Isaac chose to work with the developmentally disabled with the SOAR program through the JCC.

Ben and Sydney Fox, children of Amy and Chuck Fox Ben and Sydney have spent a meaningful year giving back to their community. They brought meals to the residents of the Night Shelter for Women at Shearith Israel. While in Israel they volunteered with Leket Israel, picking beets and donating them to feed Israelis in need. They helped rescue food from local grocery stores and delivered it to the Community Assistance Center through Second Helpings. They brought meals to families participating in Family Promise, a Temple Sinai sponsored charity that houses and feeds underprivileged families. Ben and his friend, Harris Jacobs, raised money and purchased backpacks and school supplies for a classroom full of underprivileged students through the Agape after school program. Sydney recruited her dance team to perform for the residents at the William Breman Jewish Home. She and her friends were privileged to spend time entertaining and visiting with the residents.

Leah Nuffer, daughter of Marcia and Kevin Nuffer Leah focused her service efforts on two organizations that aid women and children: Families First and Family Promise. Families First’s mission is to ensure the success of children by empowering families. For Families First, Leah led a drive to collect school supplies and then volunteered to pack backpacks with school supplies in preparation for the school year. Leah also volunteered at Family Promise, the homeless shelter that Temple Sinai hosts every two months. Leah is excited about making a difference in the lives of women and children, and expects to continue her involvement in these important issues.

Seth Nuffer, son of Marcia and Kevin Nuffer As an avid Boy Scout and nature lover, Seth wanted his service efforts to focus on helping the environment. Therefore, for his T.A.G project he volunteered to help remove invasive plants at the Chattahoochee Nature Center (CNC), and to prepare a site for their annual butterfly exhibit. The CNC’s goal is to connect people with nature in order to strengthen the community’s commitment to the environment. Seth was proud of making a difference at the CNC, and is excited to continue his environmental efforts through the Boy Scouts and other organizations in the years to come.

Temple Sinai’s Board Members Transform Family Promise Rooms During the Sinai Board’s Annual Retreat in August, their Team Building activity was designed around helping Family Promise. What a wonderful experience! Over 20 board members participated in the process of transforming Temple Sinai classrooms into Family Promise bedrooms! Divided into three teams, each team unloaded beds and bins from the Family Promise truck, made beds and set up a bedroom with curtains, rugs, artwork and lamps for their guest family. The teams competed for “fastest time” and “homiest room”. There was so much enthusiasm and great spirit! At the end of this month, October 25th - November 1st, Temple Sinai is again hosting Family Promise. We would love to have you join us! Come help with Move-in, like the Sinai Board did at their retreat (Sun 1:30-3pm). Or join us for an Overnight (nightly, 7:30pm-8am) or Saturday shift (2 hrs) of hosting. Or bring your family and provide Dinner (nightly, 6-7:30pm) and eat with our guest families. We also welcome volunteers to donate requested supplies or to help launder linens and towels. We would love to have your help in any capacity - we can help you find a way to get involved that interests you! Your participation is greatly appreciated by the Family Promise guests and is truly a wonderful act of kindness and generosity.

Now contributing to Second Helpings Atlanta (SHA) is as easy as shopping online, buying groceries or getting around town. We’ve partnered with three generous businesses – Kroger, Amazon and Uber – who contribute proceeds of sales to Second Helpings Atlanta at no cost to you, the consumer. You can sign up easily by going to Secondhelpingsatlanta.org. Scroll down and see the links to all three giving opportunities. 1. Smile.Amazon.com is a mirror site of Amazon.com. The only difference is that you can designate a charity to receive a percentage of every eligible purchase. 2. Kroger lets you can designate Second Helpings Atlanta as your charity of choice and the organization benefits from every purchase you make. 3. Uber offers new users $20 off your first ride and will make a $5 donation to Second Helpings Atlanta. It’s incredibly easy to help us generate needed funds and it all starts with a click to Secondhelpingsatlanta.org. Meanwhile, we’re happy to report that we’re delivering more food than ever thanks to our volunteer drivers and generous donors. SHA has rescued over 444,000 pounds of food so far this year! Philip N. Kranz Learning Center Your Journey. Your Home.

Learning Center News Mary Baron Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the Pulitzer Prizes. The first awards were announced in 1916 and through the ensuing years many Jewish authors have received the prize in both fiction and nonfiction categories. The Rabbi Philip N. Kranz Learning Center has a great selection of the works of these wonderful writers. Bernard Malamud’s novel The Fixer, which won the award in 1967, tells the story of a handyman (“fixer”) named Yakov Bok who leaves his village to try his luck in Kiev in 1911. He gets a job working for a member of an anti-Semitic society by hiding his Jewish identity. When a local boy is found murdered, Bok is unjustly accused of committing the murder in a form of ritual killing and is sent to prison to await his indictment. While in prison he endures an ordeal that tests his faith and sanity. In Humboldt’s Gift, by Saul Bellow, Charlie Citrine, an intellectual, middle-aged author and briefly successful playwright, struggles for meaning in his life, while reminiscing about his longtime friendship with his deceased mentor Von Humboldt Fleisher. A poker night brings Charlie a troubled entanglement with a minor gangster named Rinaldo Cantible and forces him to face his life in the here and now. After growing up in Newark, New Jersey during World War II, the “Swede” Levov takes over the family glove factory, marries a beauty queen and begins living the American dream in Philip Roth’s novel American Pastoral. When the Swede’s daughter, Merry becomes a terrorist involved in a horrific act during the Vietnam era the dream is shattered. Roth follows the family through the turmoil of the 1960’s to the present day. In Michael Chabon’s epic novel, The Adventures of Kavalier and Klay, Brooklyn born Samuel Klayman and his Czech refugee cousin Josef Kavalier work together, one as writer and one as artist, to create superhero comic books during the 1930’s and 40’s. They spin tales of the heroic Nazi fighting “Escapist” and the beautiful, mysterious “Luna Moth”. They achieve phenomenal success during the “golden age” of comics, but Joe is haunted by guilt and grief for his lost family and joins the navy to fight in World War II. Pulitzer Prize winning author Geraldine Brooks’ novel People of the Book is based on the true story of the Sarajevo Haggadah which was made in 15th century Spain and ended up in Sarajevo. The Haggadah was thought to be lost in the Serb-Bosnian War, but turned up in 1996. Brooks’ compelling novel spins in two directions. In the present, we follow rare book conservator Hanna Heath through her investigation of the Haggadah and her relationship with the Muslim librarian who found the ancient book. In the past, we

learn in separate stories which move back through time, about the history of how the book was made and used. Each story relies on a single clue unearthed in the books pages, an insect wing, a wine stain, salt crystals and a white hair to reveal the Haggadah’s rich history.

Introducing Temple Sinai’s NEW Special Parking Assistance Program... AVAILABLE NOW!

What you need to know: • Sinai SPA is for those who struggle with mobility issues • Parking attendants will be available from 5:30-8:30 pm each Shabbat evening • Sinai SPA is complimentary (no tipping allowed) • This is a pilot program, so adjustments may occur in the future

Sinai SPA

At Temple Sinai, we strive to foster an inclusive and welcoming community. We realize, however, that with an inadequate number of handicapped parking spaces and our challenging topography, too many congregants struggle to navigate the inclines from the parking lot to the building. Recognizing this as a deterrence to active participation in synagogue life for some in our congregational family, Sinai has started a new Special Parking Assistance Program (SPA) for Friday night services. Available now! Endorsed by our Hineini Accessibility Committee, the Sinai SPA will provide professional parking assistance for those who struggle with mobility issues (e.g. the elderly, those convalescing following a major surgery or injury, women in their final months of pregnancy). To use the SPA, simply drive to the front of the building on a Friday night; attendants will park your vehicle prior to services and will retrieve it for you when services have concluded.

We are extremely grateful to the generosity of the Sinai SPA initial donors: Roger & Corky Gelder, Martin & Phyllis Isenberg, Bob & Dede Thompson. If you wish to support this effort, contributions should be directed to Sinai’s Hineini - Accessibility and Inclusivity Fund. If you have questions about this initiative, please contact Shelly Dresdner at 404-252-3073 or sdresdner@templesinaiatlanta.org.

Look for red flags. Does your child seem to be doing fine in school yet your gut instinct tells you learning is harder than it should be? Or does he or she seem much more capable than the work being produced? Difficulties in acquiring new learning can be typical, but they also can signal a learning disability or autism.
