From the Rabbi's Study

R

ecently, I was sitting around a table with ten Reform rabbis from across North America. By way of introduction, we were asked to tell the story of someone who had influenced us towards the rabbinate. For me, it was the liberal Jewish Chaplain who went to all the universities in England, joining students for Shabbat. When I met her at Oxford, I was shocked. Why? Because when she lit the first Shabbat candle, and the match went out, she re-lit the match from the first candle and then lit the second candle. For me, who was a halakhically-minded Jew at the time, this was a problem – traditionally, Shabbat candles aren’t supposed to “work.” You are not supposed to use them to start other fires. But this rabbi was so smart, caring, and compelling that I listened to her anyway. She opened my mind to new ways of being Jewish. She helped me, a kid from Toronto who thought Conservative Judaism was the only way, to become a Reform rabbi. I still don’t use Shabbat candles like she did; I like the idea that the candles represent rest. But a lot of my Torah comes from that rabbi. When I told my story, another rabbi at the table said: “Lighting one candle from another… it’s not a bad image for what we are trying to do.” The founders of Reform Judaism talked a lot about light. Our movement was, after all, a product of the Enlightenment and Emancipation in Europe, that hopeful time in history when people began to share ideas and see each other as fellow citizens. The first Reform Jews spoke about being “a light unto the nations,” helping to bring people together for a better world. No matter how dark the world gets, Reform Jews always have taken the light of Jewish teaching and used it to light other candles: of social justice and inclusion, of insight and hope.

Often I will use this column to encourage you to come to a particular program or sign up for a particular activity. I’m not going to do that this time. What I do want to ask is this: what new thing might you do to bring more light to the world? I see that light when the Caring Cooks are chopping vegetables in our kitchen. I see it at the Torah study table Shabbat mornings. I see it on when our Chapel is filled with people and song. We have many opportunities; only you can determine which one might be meaningful to you. When it comes to Chanukah, the rabbis had a debate. Should we start off with eight lights on the first night and go down to one light on the eighth, or start with one and go up to eight? After all, according to the Chanukah story, we started with more oil and ended up with less, so you might think the number of candles should decrease. But no, they decide we begin with one candle and go up to eight. Why? Because we always want to increase in holiness: ma’alin b’kedusha. We always want to bring more light. Finally: there’s a joke about a man who is looking for his keys under a streetlight at night. A friend approaches. “Is this where you lost them?” the friend asks. “No,” says the man, “but I’m looking here because this is where I can see.” Our sacred task is to bring light to more places, in our world and in our lives. Let’s help each other find what we are looking for. Rabbi Lisa J. Grushcow, D. Phil. Senior Rabbi rabbigrushcow@templemontreal.ca

President’s Message

T

he High Holidays are over with for another year. The leaves are falling from the trees and there is a chill in the air. The seasons change quickly and by the time you read this, we will be getting ready for Chanukah. Life at Temple goes on with interesting programs, events and inspirational Shabbat services. Business as usual. Unfortunately the new normal for Temple and many other institutions in our community continues to include dealing with financial challenges at the same time as making efforts to be more responsive to our members needs and wants. The hardest part of being President at Temple has been to work through these issues with the executive, board, rabbi and professional staff as we on one hand, reach out to our members to be more involved and on the other hand, ask them to pay more.

In the last year, we have asked you to "step up" to the Torah, Rabbi and Builder Circles. We asked you to pay more for your membership, support a raffle, a fundraising event through ORT, a Gala at the Museum of Fine Arts, and to contribute generously to a Capital Campaign. While we have come to you often for support, we have continuously tried to be respectful of each member's individual capacity to pay. The hard facts are that, while we have made significant progress, we are still operating with a deficit and our Capital Campaign is needed to do major repairs and updating of our aging building. In order for Temple to continue to provide essential lifecycle and enriched cultural and religious experiences, we need our members to accept their responsibilities as the keepers of Reform Judaism in Montreal and as the guardians of an institution that is almost 130 years old. To do this, please pay your annual contributions at the level that you can afford to pay. This is not a place to seek out a bargain, because making Temple your bargain will only diminish what Temple can do.

4

T h e Vo i c e • Hakol

Also, remember that for the equivalent of one cup of coffee per day, an amount of $900 per year for five years, you can take on your share of the capital campaign to ensure the future of our physical presence, the Temple building, for another generation. We need the broadest possible level of participation of our membership so that we give a resounding message to the Montreal Jewish Community that Reform Judaism is alive, healthy and an attractive option for those in the community that are seeking affiliation. There are so many more things that I want to talk with you about in these communications, but getting our financial house in order is what keeps me awake at night. It has been three years since I became President. Time has passed too quickly and while I am proud of the many improvements that the leadership team has accomplished, I am disappointed with what we have not yet achieved. Even so, I remain optimistic and confident that the best is yet to come. Happy Chanukah! Stephen Yaffe president@templemontreal.ca

Food Drive Liliane Kohl, Coordinator Rosh Hashana Food Drive

O

ur 18th Annual Rosh Hashanah Food Drive to benefit MADA Community Centre took place September 25 to October 14th. Just as last year, we distributed sturdy cloth bags (donated by Craig Bromberg of Midway Industries) after services on September 24th. Leading up to the High Holy Days the Food Drive was advertised in flyers in the building, in The Voice and through What's Happening at Temple emails. Rabbi Grushcow spoke to the congregation at services about Tikkun Olam and the food collection for MADA and made a plea to our membership for generosity. Our membership was asked to fill a bag with non-perishables and return it to Temple by October 14th. We offered a pickup option whereby volunteers would pick up bags from homes of members and deliver them to Temple. Most people brought their donations back themselves. The Food Drive was a tremendous success, surpassing the amount received last year. Our estimate is that about 200 bags of non-perishables were collected. We were able to provide MADA with a generous supply of food and actively engage the congregation in this important project. Comments we received clearly showed that people did not hesitate to bring in their donations of food, and enjoyed participating in such an active way.

Just Between Us Rabbi Leigh Lerner, Rabbi Emeritus, Temple

H

ave you ever been told you have your father’s or mother’s eyes? Even if the shape of your eyes or the colour is not like theirs, you still have your parents’ eyes, because you learned to see the world under their guidance.

When you see Israel, whose eyes do you have? Your own, of course, but also your guide’s eyes. You see what your guide wants you to see, and it is backgrounded in they way the guide wants you to understand it. That’s why there’s something unique about a Temple trip to Israel -- because you’ll see Israel through an extra pair of eyes, your rabbi’s. And your rabbi sees Israel through a thousand different eyes, from Abraham’s and Sarah’s to Joshua's and King David’s, Ruth's and the Maccabees' and Hillel’s, and many more. The rabbi’s eyes see not only the past, but see with the experience of having lived Israel while studying Torah in the present era. Temple’s tours of Israel have always resulted in broader commitment and greater understanding of Jewish life both here and there. I like to think that’s because Temple’s travelers to Israel see the Land with an extra pair of eyes, the rabbi’s. Talk to Rabbi Grushcow about her Temple trip to Israel in May. It will be unique and will become a formative moment of your Jewish life. Now’s the time to make your plans, and after the Gaza War, Israelis need to see your presence. They want you to visit. I second the emotion. Have a Hanukkah filled with light. Rabbi Leigh Lerner

Marion Zimmer, Ketubbah Artist

M

arion Zimmer is a Montrealaise Ketubbah ar tist.

Marion Zimmer has been involved in the Montreal art scene for over 40 years. She was a professional calligrapher and teacher for many years and co-founded La Société des Calligraphes de Montréal in 1979. In 1998 Marion created a line of original and computer-generated ketubbot. Many of her ketubbot were based on historical designs. As a ketubbah artist she also enjoyed creating custom-made designs that reflect the couple. Working with JessyJudaica.com, Marion sold her ketubbot in Montreal and internationally until she retired last year. We are grateful to her for donating many ketubbot to Temple, which add beauty and meaning to our weddings. It was very fulfilling for her to be able to create works of art that reflected her Jewish roots. She is still involved in the calligraphy society and is presently teaching beginners about her new love, the game of bridge. Marion teaches bridge at Temple.

MoFTY: Food Security In October, MoFTY discussed the issue of “food security” and shopped for groceries in the Atwater Market. Afterwards, they had dinner at Rabbi Greenspan’s apartment and made themselves a green salad and a fruit salad with the ingredients they purchased at the market. The next MoFTY event will be the Chanukah Party in December.

Another Terrific School Year Begins at Torah School Rabbi Ellen Greenspan, Rabbi Educator rabbigreenspan@templemontreal.ca

N

ow that I have been at Temple for three months, I want to thank everyone at Temple for welcoming me so warmly into your community. I look forward to getting to know you and to greeting those I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting. I have been spending much of my time, so far, getting Torah School up and running. I am pleased to report that the year has gotten off to a terrific start. We welcomed more than 80 children at our Saturday Torah School in Westmount and our small satellite program at Ecole Buissonnière. Although we are already two months into the school year, we are always delighted to gain new students - so if you have not yet enrolled your children, please don’t hesitate to contact me. We have a wonderful year planned, full of special activities and holiday celebrations for all the families at Temple - whether your children are enrolled in Torah School or not. Our Fall activities included Apple Picking and a well-attended Sukkot program. We are looking forward to two great programs in December. Our PJ Havdalah program on Saturday, December 6th from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. The next family holiday program on the calendar is our Chanukah celebration on Saturday, December 13th at 10:30 AM. Come and celebrate with us!

emple's music program got off to a busy start in 5775! We celebrated the grandeur of the High Holy Days with cantorial soloist Jenny Cohen, organist Scott Bradford and the Temple Choral Sextet. Temple’s congregant choir, Kol HaNeshama, enlivened our second day Rosh haShana service, as well as other Friday nights throughout the fall. And our Simchat Torah dancing was extra joyous thanks to the musical talents of Isak Goldschneider on clarinet and Damon Hankoff on accordion. Looking ahead, we’re excited to celebrate Shabbat Chanukah with a festive service on Friday, December 19 at 7:45 PM, featuring Mark Simons on klezmer clarinet, as well as our very own Kol HaNeshama choir. Also, be sure not to miss Shabbat Shira on Friday, January 30 at 7:45 PM, featuring soulful and uplifting vocal arrangements inspired by the Song of the Sea. The Kol HaNeshama choir will take a break over the winter months, but will resume singing in March. If you're interested in adding your voice to this fun and spirited ensemble, please contact Rona Nadler at rona@templemontreal.ca.

O

ur volunteer group of chefs continues to cook along in our kitchen as we enter our second year preparing hot meal options twice monthly for the clients of the Share The Warmth food bank. Share The Warmth , a non-profit organization situated in Pointe St. Charles focuses activities for food security, school breakfast programs, after school music and tutoring programs and over all efforts in bringing together the local community in need. We are constantly welcoming new cooks to our group which at this time has close to 25 volunteers. Our production has expanded to over 200 servings of soups, chili and pasta sauce. Join us as we cook and connect with our fellow congregants. Members are welcome to register to join in cooking on alternate Thursdays by contacting the coordinating team at the email address below . We are always grateful for the donations of funding and specific canned goods and dried beans that those who are celebrating lifecycle occasions have invited guests to contribute. What a beautiful way to add Mitzvot to your celebration. Symposium Public Choices, Private Lives: A Jewish Conversation about End of Life Legislation

O

n November 2nd 2014, Temple hosted a public symposium on end-of-life care, with the purpose of fostering better understanding of the policy framework in place in Quebec and the ways in which people are affected as individuals and members of families and communities. In providing a forum for dialogue on an important subject for all of us, with a focus on Quebec society, Temple brought together experts with a diverse range of relevant perspectives expertise and experience. Professor Daniel Weinstock, Faculty of Law and Director of the Institute for Health and Social Policy, McGill University, teaches and writes in areas related to the intersection of medicine, ethics and law. He spoke about the background and scope of the Quebec Act Respecting End-of-Life Care, and highlighted some of the issues and challenges involved in the drafting and implementing of legislation related to the care available to “end-of-life” patients. Dr. Manuel Borod, physician and Director of the Division of Supportive and Palliative Care, McGill University Health Centre, works with end-of-life issues and patients on a daily basis. In addressing the legislative framework from the point of view of medical practices and palliative care, he pointed to confusion around definitions associate with criteria for aid in dying, and described challenges in everyday practice as a physician. Rabbi Lisa Grushcow, our Senior Rabbi at Temple, spoke as a spiritual leader for members of the Jewish community, who provides guidance and support for individuals and families at the end of life. She shared texts in which Jewish tradition and law addresses difficult issues related to end-of-life suffering. Participants had the opportunity to discuss at round tables the intersections between what they had heard from experts and their own stories, concerns and experiences. A question-answer period finished off the afternoon event. Seventy people attended what was an enriching and thought-provoking symposium. A special thank you to Temple Board member, Professor Shauna Van Praagh of McGill’s Faculty of Law, who moderated the presentations and discussion.

Guest Speaker: Anat Hoffman Rabbi Leigh Lerner, Rabbi Emeritus

W

hen Israel’s equivalent of the New York Times, HaAretz, names someone Israeli of the Year, you have to take them seriously. In 2013, it was Anat Hoffman, director of the Reform Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) and Women of the Wall. More than a serious thinker, Anat Hoffman’s visit to Temple on the Shabbat of October 24-25 revealed her as a woman of serious and capable action. Speaking at lunch, dinner, Shabbat services on Friday and Saturday, and to the family service, she pointed to multiple areas where her, and our, belief in a pluralistic and democratic Israel has moved her and the groups she leads to strong action. Anat outlined to attendees at a lunch for women in our givers’ circles how proactive she has been to assure women’s rights in Israel, from making sure women could sit wherever they please on public transport to forcing a radio station to allow women’s voices on the air or permitting pictures of women running for office to be printed on election flyers in Jerusalem. Concurrently, that day, Women of the Wall caused the first bat mitzvah at the Wall to read the Torah. To lawyers and board members, Anat spoke about stopping racist rabbis from spreading hate in Israel. They are a small but vocal group that IRAC seeks to call to account for their views. To the congregation she gave insight into the progress toward an area at the Wall in Jerusalem where men and women could worship together, as well as showing how Jews, Arabs, ultra-Orthodox and non-Orthodox can work together. Her wonderful example? The Biblical Zoo in Jerusalem. ARZA Canada underwrote travel expenses for Anat Hoffman’s trip. Your support of ARZA Canada ( http://www.arzacanada.org/#) aids Reform Judaism in Israel and Anat Hoffman’s educational efforts to keep Israel’s promise as a home of equality for all Jews. The engagement was sponsored by the Rabbi Lerner Lecture Series.

B'nai Mitzvah

Mazel Tov to our B’nai Mitzvah and their families! We look forward to welcoming our young men and women as members of the Confirmation Class.

Alexander Nevard

Son of Wendy Corn and Andrew Nevard October 23, 2014 I attend St. George’s High School in Montreal, Qc. At school, my favourite subject is science and my favourite sport is Hockey. The thing I liked the most about preparing for my Bar Mitzvah was learning about my history and traditions. I learned that every day I am given a new opportunity to be a good person. One mitzvah that I would like to emphasize in my Jewish life is to be kind and generous to others. Becoming Bar Mitzvah is important to me because I learned what it means to be Jew. I would like to give Tzedakah to Old Brewery Mission, they support the homeless by providing emergency services for people who find themselves on the streets and help them re-integrate by finding them homes and helping them get a better life. I feel a strong affinity to the homeless and always want to help them.

Samuel Da Costa Zak

Son of Gad Zak and Maria Da Costa November 22, 2014 I presently attend Lindsay Place High School on the West Island in PointeClaire. I chose this school since I am a violin player and this school has a strong music department and a good string program. My favorite subjects in school are Music, Gym and English. My main hobbies are flying model airplanes and gliding in actual gliders. My favorite sport is Basketball, but during the summer, I also go Sailing and Horse Back Riding. A little known aspect of me is my very strong Portuguese background. Every Saturday, I go for 4 hours to a school in Downtown Montreal to learn the language and culture. I also spent weeks in my mom’s birth place in Portugal and got introduced to the Portuguese music tradition of “Fado” there, which I loved. What I liked most about preparing for my Bar Mitzvah was learning the tropes, and the idea of me actually reading from the Torah no vowels! Important lessons that I have learned from my Bar Mitzvah studies are the lessons of self-control and balancing conflicting relations out and in the family. These lessons are important because I‘ve learned that even adults can have trouble with self control as did King Saul. Jonathan—sets an example of well balancing conflicting relationships. Becoming Bar Mitzvah is important to me because it means that I am now considered a mature adult and bear a lot more social and moral responsibilities than I did before. In Judaism I may testify in court, and obey the Ten Commandments. I should now strive to be a much more dependable and reliable person. I would like to give Tzedakah to the West Island Palliative Care Center which is in dire need of. They took care of my friend’s dying father with extreme kindness. Similarly, if there is one mitzvah that I would emphasize in my Jewish, social and moral life, it is to visit the sick. Some people do not like to do so because they don’t like seeing a person in bad condition, as they find it depressing. But in my mind, the sick person needs that support.

Dolan Levy

Son of Laurent Levy and Melanie Bouthillette February 7, 2015 I attend Collège Durocher in Longueuil. My favourite sport is Taekwondo. In preparing for my Bar Mitzvah, one thing that I enjoyed was the time I shared with my father, because we decided that we would study for my Bar Mitzvah together. One important lesson I learned from my Bar Mitzvah studies is that it is very important to give to others. One mitzvah that I would like to emphasize in my Jewish life is to “respect the 10 commandments” which are in my parasha. Becoming a Bar Mitzvah is important to me because it will help me to have a religious life when I grow older. Something I want the congregation to know about me is that I'm a huge reader and I usually read 500 pages of a book every week! I would like to give Tzedakah to Greenpeace.

Did you know? Our grade 7 class takes field trips to MADA and Paperman’s, a walking tour of Jewish Montreal and more.
