Rabbi’s Message

Rabbi Richard Spiegel rabbi@templeetzchaim.org

Forty years ago, when I was an Assistant Rabbi at Temple Beth-El in Poughkeepsie, New York, I was asked to chair a community-wide fair at the time of Yom Ha’atzamaut-Israel Independence Day. Israel was celebrating her 30th birthday, and we wanted to make a big splash. We were so excited that Israel, our fledging Jewish state, was celebrating her 30th birthday. (We did have an amazing event!)

In our imperfect world, Israel still has to deal with many problems and one that dwarfs all of the others. Of course, that is her security. Israel still has enemies on many of her borders. Hamas, Hezbollah, and Syria – with Iranian support- threaten Israel’s existence every day. While Israel is, thankfully, very strong militarily, we all worry about the possibility of war and the great suffering that war would bring. We pray that soon Israel will celebrate a birthday with no threats of calamity surrounding her and only a great peace in all of the Middle East.

Today, at the end of my career, Israel is celebrating another round number birthday, her 70th! Amazing! 70 years! Most of our congregation was born after the founding of the state. Most of us do not know a world without Israel. That little struggling country is now a world leader in technology, cyber-security, agriculture, water-usage, prevention of terrorism, and so much more. It is a fantastic country in so many ways, and all of us who are privileged to travel to Israel come back enriched, inspired, and uplifted, and so proud of our Jewish heritage.

But with it all- Israel is strong, growing, developing, achieving, and making us all very proud. So Happy 70th Birthday Israel, and may you celebrate Birthdays for years and years, and decades and decades, and centuries and centuries to come. Rabbi Richard Spiegel

President’s Message

Sherri Finn, President president@templeetzchaim.org

Dear TEC Family,

everyone’s passion and concern about the future of TEC. There were members that I haven’t seen for a great deal of time, maybe even since High Holidays. Some even since our children were in preschool and religious school together. Members who recognized each other but had never met, were engaging each other as though they had known each other forever. The outcome of this search is far greater than hiring a new senior Rabbi. It is knowing that we are a wonderful, joyous and appreciative community who cares about one another.

It is with great honor and pleasure that I announce that Rabbi Spiegel will become our new Rabbi Emeritus beginning August 1, 2018. The contract is signed, and the ink is dry! I am so thrilled that Rabbi will remain in our community, continuing to offer his warmth, wisdom and guidance. Temple Etz Chaim is lucky that he desires to remain in our beautiful community that he helped to build. I hope your calendars are marked for Sunday, May 27th, when we will honor Rabbi Spiegel at a beautiful gala. Please watch for details and for your invitations in the mail.

May our pews and tables always be full!! B’Shalom,

On another note, I want you all to realize how wonderful the two special weekends with our Rabbinic Candidates were. Special in the sense that our pews and tables were full at every service and discussion. Your great presence demonstrates

Sherri Finn

Rabbinic Search Committee

Rabbinic Search Committee RSC@templeetzchaim.org

The Rabbinic Search Committee would like to thank each and every one of you for your support throughout this process. We would also like to extend our gratitude to those congregants who participated in the initial congregational survey, parlor meetings, attended events during the candidate visits, provided feedback by way of survey, comment cards, emails, and/or conversations. The information gathered at these events, along with your personal thoughts, opinions and perspectives about our synagogue were the most valuable tool we had to determine our course and evaluate the applicants. Our committee of 12 took this assignment seriously and has worked together for the past year always with the best interest of TEC as our highest priority. We will continue to follow these principles as we move forward with our search for the next Senior Rabbi for TEC.

and interest shown to both candidates. What was even more inspiring was watching a vibrant and engaged congregation who turned out to take a stake in its future. There was a renewed energy as members began to imagine and open themselves to the possibility. Please keep an eye out for emails, which will keep you informed as our process continues. Email RSC@templeetzchaim.org should you have questions about the continuation of the search process.

The beauty and warmth of our TEC community was evident during the recent candidate visits and we were proud and thrilled by the curiosity

Interfaith Interaction Committee Shalom – If you haven’t heard, a primary goal of this committee is to increase congregational involvement with the Conejo Valley religious community. We did that recently when we participated in the Muslim Culture Banquet at California Lutheran University (shown in photo). We also hosted members of the Mormon, Muslim and California Lutheran communities at Shabbat services. Please let me know if you are interested in guiding a guest from another faith through services on a Friday night or Saturday morning. Members of the committee have also been attending the Women’s Interfaith Network of the Conejo Valley (known as WIN) and the Refugee Welcoming Team of the Conejo Valley. In both of these groups, members of TEC

work with other faiths in supporting those in need in the Conejo Valley and surrounding areas. An upcoming event we will be participating in is the Walk to End Genocide at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza on Sunday, May 6, 2018. The walk provides an opportunity to learn with other faiths about a shared cause. The next Interfaith Interaction Committee meeting is Thursday April 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the Temple. At the upcoming meeting, we’ll discuss visiting worship services of other faiths, WIN, the Refugee Welcoming Team, future plans for a community Passover Seder, and more. I’ll report about the activities of the Conejo Valley Interfaith Council. See you on Thursday April 26! All are welcome and encouraged to attend, from USY to TECeniors, and all in between. Preschool

Debbie Blumenthal, Director of ECE debbieb@templeetzchaim.org

April is here and Pesach is near, and so our preschoolers will begin their preparation for this favorite Jewish holiday. This spring holiday preparation means that our classes are cooking and tasting Passover foods like matzah, matzahbrei, haroset and matzah ball soups. The children are acting out the story of Moses, and learning about the ten plagues, the four questions, and the Passover Seder. On Friday, March 30th, the entire school participated in a model Seder, complete with a Gesher reenactment of the Passover story, familiar Passover songs and blessings. Our Early Childhood Education Center will be open during the week of Passover.

at 6:15 p.m. This will be a Pajama Tot Shabbat featuring Rooms G and H singing their favorite Shabbat songs with us. We look forward to seeing everyone! Just a reminder – we are currently accepting registration for Summer Camp and our next school year, 2018-2019. If you would like a tour of our school facility and program, please call the school office at 805-497-6852. The early childhood staff and I would love to wish everyone a wonderful Passover holiday! Happy Passover!

On April 19th we will have a school-wide celebration for Yom Ha Atzmaut. It will be Israel’s 70th birthday, and we have fun activities planned for the entire morning culminating with an Israeli lunch for all!

The April Tot Shabbat service will be on Friday, April 20th

Religious School

Joyce Bronstein, Director of Religious School Education joyce@templeetzchaim.org

I’m sure you will agree that the more contact students have with their peers at Religious School, the more likely they are to develop strong Jewish identities and remain connected with their Jewish faith. Our heritage is rich, and our customs, traditions and prayers help our students develop their own awareness of the beauty of Judaism. Learning Hebrew and participating in/and leading prayers help our students to feel part of the Jewish community. It is necessary that our children have a full Jewish educational experience so that they will have the necessary tools to cherish their Judaism throughout their lives. Judaism imposes a vital task on parents: to teach and educate children about the Jewish story. Parents provide the luggage. It is important that our children, as adults, will be able and willing to open up their own suitcase and use the contents. Parents, I know that sometimes it can be quite hectic with your family’s busy schedules. However, being a member of a synagogue and sending your children to Religious School is pouring the cement for a strong Jewish foundation that will sustain your children for the rest of their lives. A Religious School education is truly a gift that you give your children. This gift is invaluable and one from which you will reap the rewards when your 4

children become adults. As I am sure you are aware, these formative years are important. These years cannot be replaced at any other time in your children’s lives. Learning the Jewish perspective and gaining knowledge on issues regarding values, history, prayers, and so much more will become an intrinsic part of their everyday life. Ultimately, children will have an even stronger Jewish identity and feel their Judaism in their heart. On a different note, please mark your calendar and join us on May 4 th for a very special Religious School Shabbat Service at which time we will honor and recognize Rabbi Spiegel – “Our Teacher of Teachers.” Rabbi Spiegel has directly influenced and helped our students to have a strong Jewish identity and to feel their Judaism in their heart. Let’s show our Rabbi Spiegel how important he is and how much we care about him. I hope that you will make it a point to attend these Shabbat Services in honor of Rabbi Spiegel. Please stop by my office anytime. I look forward to seeing you! L’hitraot, Joyce Bronstein Director of Religious School Education

We Proudly Congratulate our B’nai Mitzvah Aidan Shechter

April 14th, 2018

My name is Aidan Shechter, and I am in the 7th grade at Redwood Middle School. My family were members of Temple Etz Chaim before I was born, so it has been part of my life for my whole life. I love coming to Shabbat services, where I have always found a warm and welcoming congregation, and where I have learned many prayers and beautiful melodies. I am proud to become Bar Mitzvah and look forward to continuing to participate in the Jewish community. I would like to thank my parents, my older brother Eric, and my older sister Jenna, for all their love and support. I also want to thank Rabbi Spiegel for always including me in Shabbat services, Hazzan Pablo for tutoring me for this special day, and Joyce Bronstein for her helpfulness and kindness while I attended religious school. Thank you to everyone for supporting me as I become a Bar Mitzvah.

Grady Sterling

April 21st, 2018

My name is Grady Sterling, and I’m a 7th grader at Colina Middle School. UCLA athletics is my passion. I never miss a football or basketball game. I also enjoy running track for the Thousand Oaks Flyers. My Bar Mitzvah is important to me because it signifies a milestone in the Jewish religion, and I hope to continue my studies. I want to thank my great tutor Marv and the teachers at TEC who have helped me prepare for my Bar Mitzvah. I would also like to thank my family for their love and support.

Jacob Brusseau

April 28th, 2018

Hi, my name is Jacob Brusseau. I’m 13, and I go to Los Cerritos Middle School. My favorite subjects are science and social studies. I like to hang out with friends, listen to music, and play basketball. I also love to chill with my dog Scooby. For the past few years, I have enjoyed helping out in our community by feeding the homeless. When I am at home I usually listen to music, watch TV, make trouble with my little brother, or just hang out with my dog. My Bar Mitzvah is important to me because it signifies my becoming a man in the Jewish religion. I would like to thank my wonderful mom and dad, my tutors Ed, Pablo, and Jessica, and of course Temple Etz Chaim. I also want to thank all my other friends and family who have supported me through the years, I truly appreciate it.

Last month we had so much fun with Men’s Club helping with candle packing for Yom Hashoah, hanging with our friends at Specialty Kinnus, and eating tasty treats during the Kadima Chocolate Seder. In April we have some very exciting events planned! On April 8 12pm-4pm we are taking the 6th-10th graders on a mitzvah tour as we travel around the Conejo area for “SATO Into the Day”. There are many mitzvah projects planned for each place we go as well as programming and games aimed at enticing and getting our kids excited about helping others. The cost is $36 per person and includes a kosher lunch. We have worked hard in preparing a very special guest speaker event for Yom Hashoah, “L’dough V’dough”, a program connecting students to Holocaust Survivors on Thursday April 12th. We aim to connect students to history through storytelling, a way not often discussed in the classroom. Our goal is to equip students with knowledge, as well as personal connections and stories as told by the Survivors, and to carry them forward for future generations. 7th-12th graders are invited to this talk. Feeding the hungry at Calvary Church is this month, and we need your help. A sign up genius will be sent out for food and volunteer sign ups. If you are interested in joining us on 4/24 please email youth@templeetzchaim.org so you can be added to the sign up. It’s almost that time to sign up for a position on our Jr (7th-8th grade) and Sr (9th-12th grade) USY Board! We work

together to plan events throughout the year to have the ultimate experience and fun at TEC for grades 3 and up! We will program, plan, travel, create, and work together with other students on our Board as well as with other Temples and their USY Boards! The possibilities are endless, all you need is passion and enthusiasm. All questions regarding our activities, calendar, department, and Summer Smash Camp are welcomed and encouraged. Please feel free to reach us at (805)494-3648 or email youth@templeetzchaim.org B’shalom Shannon Tepfer

Guess Who’s Coming to Shabbas? Happy Birthday to us! Temple Etz Chaim’s “Guess Who’s Coming to Shabbas?” Program is now one year old. During the past year we’ve had 38 hosted dinners with 107 invited guest families participating. That’s a whole lot of great food, friendships, and fun shared by our congregants as they celebrated Shabbat together. As we grow into our second year, our goals have remained the same: to strengthen the synagogue community and to help families build meaningful memories, one Shabbat dinner at a time.

“What does Israel Mean to Me” will be a great discussion topic around the dinner table!
