He is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Rhode Island Foundation. Rhode Island Monthly singled him out as one of the 25 Driving Forces in the Rhode Island business community during the last 25 years. He was recently awarded the David E. Sweet Award for his leadership and commitment to the community. We know him as an utterly decent, thoughtful and caring mensch and a devoted husband and father. TU B’SHEVAT The Fifteenth of Shevat January 16, 2014 Celebrating the Health of our Planet
According to Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai: "If you have a seedling in your hand and someone says to you, 'Look, here comes the Messiah', go and plant the seedling first, and then come out to meet the Messiah." Thus our tradition acknowledges the importance of trees, and the world of nature in Jewish Tradition. On January 16, 2014 we celebrate the holiday of Tu B’Shevat, the New Year for Trees. Historically the celebration of Tu B’Shevat was a way of maintaining a connection with the land of Israel, a desert climate where trees are vital for the sustenance of life. Tu B’Shevat, which occurs in the land of Israel at the time when the winter rains subside and first signs of spring begin to appear, is also a time when we note the turning of the seasons. Today Tu B’Shevat enables us to acknowledge the relationship of humankind and the natural world and our responsibility for the ecological health of our planet. It is Jewish Earth Day! In our celebration of this ancient day, let us take the time to do something good for our world. Whether it be recycling, planting, or conserving in some way, let us all make a contribution. LYG

Rosh Hodesh Shevat, the start of the new month, is THURSDAY, JANUARY 2nd. Shevat is the month when the very first trees in the State of Israel begin to have buds and bloom, a reminder of the rebirth and beauty of the land and of our responsibility as God’s partners to care for it and to appreciate it. The holiday of Tu B’Shavat, the 15th day of the month of Shevat (when the moon is full) reminds us of this sacred obligation and gives us the opportunity to plant seeds and trees that will grow here and in Israel.

Rosh Hodesh Adar is SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1st. Look for the new moon on Friday night, January 31st! In Adar we celebrate the holiday of Purim, a time when story -telling and costumes, sweet treats, special drinks, and general frivolity help to reveal the blessings hidden in the world around us. Our tradition teaches, “when the month of Adar begins, we increase our joy.” This new month is an opportunity to uncover and increase the blessings of hope and happiness, love and laughter in our lives and in our world with our words and our actions.

Cantor Lisa Levine APRIL 11 & 12, 2014 Cantor LISA LEVINE is a nationally known cantor, composer, author and worship artist. Lisa studies and teaches yoga and is the creator and author of "Yoga Shalom" a unique Jewish embodiment-of-prayer worship Book/DVD/ CD published by URJ Press. Lisa has been a featured author of the Jewish Book Council and shares her music with communities across the country. Lisa is the Cantor of Temple Shalom in Chevy Chase, Maryland. She shares her life with husband Andy and their two college age children, Emily & Louis, a very feisty West Highland Terrier named Duncan and an independent cat named Gizmo.

Soulful Shabbat Ruach is an original Shabbat Evening Service written by Cantor Lisa Levine for her choirs, bands and congregation. It was created to appeal to young and old alike, people of different faith backgrounds and inclusiveness. The prayers are set in both Hebrew and English and meld a variety of styles including Gospel, Country, Folk, Chassidic, Country, Klezmer and Ladino. As an Artist-inResidence, Lisa will provide all the materials you will need for your Shabbat experience! She will work with you, your choirs, your band members and accompianist to create a truly unique worship experience. Along the way Lisa will share her insights into the meanings of prayers, her inspiration in writing her songs and her unique perspective on life. Lisa truly puts the “Jew” in "Jewbilation!"
Yoga Shalom is a unique worship experience that brings together body, mind, and spirit for an extraordinary prayer service. Combining the two powerful spiritual disciplines of Jewish worship and yoga practice, Yoga Shalom leads to deeper understandings of both or, as Lisa writes of her initial forays into yoga as a cantorial student, “I learned to be more present in my prayers and meditations so I could better pray with and on behalf of my congregation.”
My Songs for the Jews of Cuba Saturday, April 12 at 7:30 PM
This one hour concert takes audiences around the world through Jewish music. In 2006 Lisa performed a concert in Havana, Cuba, where she adapted a concert of Jewish folksongs that she thought the Jewish community there would love. The reaction was so great that, when she returned to the states, she recorded a CD especially for the Jews of Cuba. Then she returned to Havana in 2007 to present a second concert and give a copy of the CD to every Jewish family in Cuba! Since then Lisa has returned two more times, presenting concerts and teaching the children of the Patronato Religious School. The concert begins with Ladino songs, moves to Yiddish folk songs, Cantorial gems and ends with favorite Hebrew melodies. Paired with her insightful narration and slides about her trips as the first woman cantor to perform in Cuba, audiences have been riveted by her story and stylistic renderings of the favorite songs of the Jewish people.

REL IGIOUS SCHOOL
EIGHTH, NINTH & TENTH GRADE CLASSES TOUR BROOKLYN, NEW YORK ! On SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17th, the Temple’s eighth, ninth and tenth grade classes took a whirlwind trip to Brooklyn, New York, to supplement their curricula studies of Comparative Judaism. They visited the Chassidic community and met with Rabbi Beryl Epstein, a Chassidic Rabbi, who introduced them to the religion, culture and lifestyle of a spiritual world that they had never seen. They had an up-close and personal look in their visits to a synagogue, mikveh, and sofer (scribe). Following a Kosher lunch of falafel, they went to The Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory and saw the Brooklyn Bridge. Their trip home was enhanced with brick oven-baked pizzas from Grimaldi’s Pizzeria! Although it was a rather foggy and misty day, all were very excited with this unique experience.

Brotherhood NEWS SPRING into Brotherhood !
Well, it was two months ago, but we can’t stop talking about our amazing show featuring “The Edwards Twins." Many of our Temple members never saw Cher looking the way she did that night. The other great news was that we raised lots of money that will go to help our Religious school children this year. To all those who attended, we want to thank you with all of our hearts.
We are however, far from done with our activities for this year. The fun continues for Brotherhood members on February 27th as we bring back an old favorite… our “Paid Up” Brotherhood Dinner. Great food, and special guest entertainment, free for paid up Brotherhood members. If you’re not currently a member, join now, or even the night of the event.
Mark your calendars for Sunday, April 6th as we present our Annual Herbert Wagner Memorial Breakfast. Our guest speaker will be announced soon. Then, we wrap up the year with our Charles Lindenbaum “Person of the Year” award banquet on Saturday, May 31st.

It was a busy fall season for the Sisterhood! We co-sponsored the Sisterhood/Brotherhood High Holiday receptions; funded the miniature Torahs for Consecration; celebrated our 100th anniversary with our Sisterhood Shabbaton; treated our members to a relaxing afternoon with our Paid Up Event “All About You”; served latkes, applesauce and sufganiyot at the Chanukah concert; made a meal at the Ronald McDonald House; and raised money to support temple initiatives through our bake sales, Chanukah sales, and donor non-event. We have some exciting programs on deck for this first half of 2014. The Joanne Forman Film Festival, presented by the Sisterhood of Temple Beth-El in March, offers three films and discussions over three Sundays that are not to be missed. And, once again, we will be having our Matzeltoff Candy Sale and Passover Raffle to win a full course Kosher first night Seder. In addition, our annual Rosh Chodesh is coming up in April. This is always such a special, inspiring event. We are also hosting the annual Insight Luncheon and Staff Appreciation Luncheon. Make it a goal in 2014 to check out what the Sisterhood has to offer. Attendees were treated to chair massages; yoga demonstrations; beauty makeovers, a variety of vendors representing beauty, cooking, handbag, and jewelry products; delicious spa-themed food by our own Nikki Hamburger; and a raffle of prizes donated from the vendors. Morgan would like to major in oceanography at URI with the goal of becoming a marine biologist.

With that comes a lot more freedom and responsibilities.” For his Mitzvah Mania Project, Samuel is raising money for an organization called Good Sports by using his excellent running skills in 5K races. The proceeds provide sports equipment for communities in need. It is Samuel’s lifetime goal to be successful at whatever career he undertakes and to raise a Jewish family.
