Welcome to the 43rd Telluride Jazz Festival, the swingingest weekend in the San Juans. Telluride Society for Jazz (TSJ) is proud to be the steward of this internationally-acclaimed festival.

TSJ’s mission is to keep Telluride bopping and swinging, build the performance skills of emerging artists, bring iconic musicians to Telluride and introduce our community to the joys of this unique art form.

The music presented here shares one common element – improvisation. A jazz audience experiences the spontaneous creation of art. The music is never played the same way. It is interactive as the musicians listen to one another, take their cues, perform solos and support each other.

We are celebrating the 25th anniversary of our Student All-Stars program and its director, Bob Montgomery. Each summer Bob and co-director Josh Quinlan (an All-Star in the program’s first season in 1994) review auditions and select a group to work collectively on their performance and skills.

Playing jazz is learned by being passed from one generation to the next. Fostering inter-generational sharing and presenting opportunities for our audience to experience improvisational music are the cornerstones of our mission.

COMMUNITY COLLABORATION

The Telluride Jazz Festival has teamed up with One-To-One Mentoring and the Telluride Chamber Music Festival to coexist during the weekend dates of August 9-11, 2019. OneTo-One Mentoring has joined us to enhance the Jazz Patron Welcome Reception by replacing the traditional kickoff event with exclusive access to the renowned “Taste of Telluride and Top Chef Competition” at the Peaks Resort in Mountain Village. The Telluride Chamber Music Festival has extended an arm to recruit artist Danny Green Trio Plus Strings to perform at the Jazz After Dark series expanding the programing to a new venue, Telluride’s Palm Theatre. Make sure to check out these wonderful additions to the festival experience!

THE DEAL TIPS TO FEST

Drink lots of water and take it easy on the alcohol until you adjust to the altitude.

Wear plenty of sunblock, bring a raincoat and warm clothes for the evening.

TRANSIT

A free shuttle bus makes down-town loops starting at 7 am until midnight daily (look for the Galloping Goose street signs). The Gondola is a free ride to Mountain Village, open daily at 6:30 am. On Thursday, the gondola runs until midnight, on Friday and Saturday it runs until 2am, and on Sunday it runs until midnight. Telluride Express offers custom transportation solutions for groups and special accommodations locally and regionally. To schedule a ride call (970) 728-6000.

REUSE, REDUCE, RECYCLE + COMPOST

In cooperation with our vendors, Shamrock Foods, and the Town of Telluride, the Telluride Jazz Festival provides attendees the opportunity to recycle and compost nearly everything you would want to throw away. When you arrive at the Festival, you’ll find multiple recycling and compost centers located throughout the Festival grounds and one in the campground.

REFILL & REHYDRATE

In the spirit of environmental consciousness, no bottled water is available for purchase at Telluride Jazz Festival. We offer FREE water stations within the Festival to keep you hydrated all day. Bring your own bottle and refill your bottle throughout the day at our Filling Station on the west end of the Park, and in the Patron/VIP Area.

THE TELLURIDE HISTORICAL MUSEUM

The Telluride Jazz Festival has partnered with the Telluride Historical Museum to offer free museum admission to pass holders during the festival weekend. Just show your festival wristband for museum entry. The Telluride Historical Museum is located at 201 W Gregory Ave.

The power of music to gather, evoke emotion and send a message is undeniable. At the Telluride Jazz Festival we’re committed to using the few days we have with our attendees and our resources to promote sustainability and environmental responsibility. The Telluride Jazz Festival puts the planet and sustainability as a top-tier priority when doing business. Through action and partnerships we focus on waste reduction, earth celebration, environmental education and advocacy, we aim to have the most positive impact as possible.

There are multiple staffed compost and recycle stations located throughout the Festival for proper waste disposal.

Each station is manned by an environmental volunteer who helps determine if trash can be recycled or composted.

Every festival food vendor serves their food on compostable or recyclable plates and utensils reducing unnecessary plastic waste. We also utilize compostable dishware in the Patron Area and other festival catering areas. In collaboration with Eco-Action

SUSTAINABILITY + NAVIGATION Partners, we were able to divert 62% of compost and recycling from our festival waist in 2018. We are committed to improving this diversion percentage in the future.

ENERGY EFFICIENT PEDESTRIAN TRAVEL

The Telluride Jazz Festival encourages attendees to carpool to Telluride, then park and leave their vehicle put for the weekend. With Telluride’s robust public transportation infrastructure, this is a safe, simple and fun way to reduce carbon emissions.

During the festival, the Telluride Gondola offers free transportation to-and-from Mountain Village from 7-2 am on Friday and Saturday. In town, the Galloping

Goose offers complimentary rides on a 20 minute circuit, while the Wilkinson Public Library offers cruiser bike rentals.

YEAR-ROUND LOW-COMMUTING OFFICE

More than 75% of time, the festival’s full-time staff utilizes human-powered or public transportation to commute to our office reducing carbon emissions.

The United States uses roughly 50 billion plastic water bottles a year, and nearly 80% of them end up in the landfill.

The Telluride Jazz Festival says no to single-use plastic water bottles. In-fact, you won’t find one for sale in the festival. Instead we’ve built two free, convenient, easy to use water stations in the festival grounds. Bring a water bottle, purchase a souvenir bottle or use a reusable cup, just say no to bottled water.

Instead of single-use plastic, the festival employs multi-use souvenir cups and compostable cups for beer, wine and cocktails at all festival bars.

JAZZ ON MAIN To kick off the festival, Thursday afternoon features “Jazz on Main” in historic Downtown Telluride. Free and open to the public from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, the “Jazz on Main” series will feature live jazz in various bars and venues.

Jazz After Dark passes allow access to all three venues for the night purchased. All venues are first come, first served and based on the capacity of each venue.

The late night scene at the Telluride Jazz Festival keeps the music and party going into the deep hours of the evening in a selection of Telluride’s best indoor nightclubs and historic venues. Once the “Jazz After Dark” series gets jamming, a walk down Main Street feels like a walk down Frenchmen Street in New Orleans. Here, you can catch your choice of acts in an intimate, up close and personal setting.

VICTOR WOOTEN MASTERCLASS “MUSIC OF NATURE AND THE NATURE OF MUSIC”

Join legendary bassist and five-time GRAMMY Award winning artist Victor Wooten on Friday, August 9th from 12:00 – 2:00 pm for a nature walk to the scenic Lower Bear Creek Waterfall (located near town park), followed by a short walk up the river trail (the walk is on relatively flat ground) to the Sheridan Opera House where Wooten will lead a Masterclass. Wooten will use his electric bass to guide concepts and ideas of viewing music and nature as its own language. Wooten will also explore the idea that music, nature and the verbal languages are serving the same purpose, as a form of expression. A universal language.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY OUTREACH The Telluride Society for Jazz and its programs (Telluride Jazz Festival) represent music education of the highest order. World class Jazz musicians bring their talent, skills, and knowledge to our community, sharing them all on the Town Park Main Stage, “Society Stage” at Elks Park, Jazz After Dark historic venues, Telluride School District and other regional education institutions.

TELLURIDE STUDENT JAZZ ALL-STARS EVERY YEAR DEDICATED JAZZ STUDENTS SEND AUDITION TAPES IN HOPES OF BEING SELECTED TO THE PRESTIGIOUS TELLURIDE STUDENT JAZZ ALL-STARS. Selected by program directors Prof. Bob Montgomery and Josh Quinlan, the students spend a week before the festival studying music and working on collaborative compositions.

The ensemble pops up at venues around town in the days leading up to the festival and are honored with performing the opening slot on the main stage on Saturday. The musicianship these young players display is topnotch. Many will go on to become professional musicians. You can say “I knew them when …”

THE WIND RIVER JAZZ PROJECT

Pianist Kenny Goldman and bassist Mike Enriquez, have long collaborated as a Jazz duo here in Telluride. They currently play together at the Phoenix Bean for Sunday Brunch. When the opportunity to play the Jazz festival was presented, Kenny reached out to his old friend from music school for a horn section and drafted Wyomingbased Dr. Robert Rumbolz,

trumpet, a notable composer, professor and performer in the contemporary jazz world. Our tenor saxophone, Sam Woodis, a recent graduate of Northwest College, and the pro drumming of Chris Goplerud - a veteran at Telluride Jazz Festival - and we became the Wind River Jazz Project.

Bob Montgomery is an internationally recognized performing artist and esteemed music educator. Montgomery is the founder and director of the Telluride Jazz All-Stars Program, and has helped hundreds of young jazz musicians enter the world of jazz as professional performers. Montgomery is celebrating his 25th year of the Telluride Jazz Student Allstars Program and we are honored to host this longstanding musical tradition.

From their first show, the McCarthy Trio knew they were on to something! When playing, all band members of the trio put a spin on the sound, direction and balance of the composition. As true collaborators, the soul of the trio’s sound depends on this.

Playing a mix of modern jazz, blues and originals, a Kevin McCarthy Trio performance takes it’s listeners on a journey. Mike Enriquez holds down the bass 18 | telluridejazz.org

and is perfectly supportive with every note. His solos reflect the depth of a very musical voice.

Chris Goplerud drives the band with an infectious groove, always nimble and creative. Chris has a deep knowledge of jazz and a passion for the music that is inspirational.

Alumni from the prestigious Telluride Jazz All-Stars Program reunite for the 25th anniversary of the program’s inception. We are honored to welcome Annie Booth on piano, Patrick McDevitt on bass, Alejandro Castano on drums, Alex Heffron on guitar and Anisha Rush on saxophone to the 2019 artist lineup. The reunion band will showcase their talents with performances on the festival’s Main Stage and Society Stage .

STILLWATER ALL-STARS The Stillwater Allstars are a group of select students and faculty from Stillwater Music Program, a non-profit based music school in Durango, Colorado.

Students in this group tour and gig during summer months in the Four Corners Area performing an exciting set that covers jazz, funk, Latin and more. Today Hearts of Worship traverses the country, spreading the good word and filling hearts with hope.

LP & THE VINYL This set will be fun and smooth and easy on the soul. LP is vocalist Leonard Patton who comes at this project with a strong background in gospel as well as jazz.

DANNY GREEN TRIO PLUS STRINGS This superbly talented pianist, composer and educator will transport the festival’s audience with his nuanced, riverine playing. The San Diego-based Green and his equally gifted colleagues, bassist Justin Grinnell and drummer Julien Cantelm, have been performing together for over a decade and their intuitive, unspoken language translates into beautiful music that seems effortless. Original compositions and jazz standards comprised the trio’s mesmerizing sets. With a string trio added, it’s

enthralling. Music education is an important part of Green’s work as an artist. He has conducted clinics and master classes all over the country with the trio and takes jazz music into elementary school classrooms, as well as teaching college level courses. The trio has recorded six albums, the newest being One Day It Will, a col-

laboration between the trio and San Diego Symphony violinists Kate Hatmaker and Igor Pandurski, violist Travis Maril, and cellist Erica Erenyi. It is a beautiful recording, one that the entertainment website Jazz de Gama said is, “one to die for.”

THE MATTSON 2 PLAY A LOVE SUPREME Wow, wow, wow. The Mattson 2 are identical twins from Southern California. Jared Mattson plays guitar — layer upon layer — and Jonathan Mattson drums. Though hardly the world’s only guitardrum duo out there — White Stripes, Black Keys, The Pack A.D., Shovels and Rope are just a few in the rock genre — The Mattson 2 are unlike any such duo you’ve ever heard. Jared’s guitars swirl and swoop, creating an ethereal and urgent soundscape, while Jonathan’s drumming drives their powerful sound. We’ll oversimplify things and call it jazz-rock, but sonically the Mattson’s music

stretches far beyond that description. There’s a breezy, swinging feel to their compositions and given their California roots, it should come as little surprise that guitar sounds bringing to mind Dick Dale emerge from the tumult of sound the pair creates. Their

seven records reflect a diversity of cultural influences and collaborations with notables in the jazz world. Pardon the repetition, but wow, wow, wow.

but No Cigar made an immediate impression, charting No. 1 on the U.S. Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. Lamarr called the trio’s style, “soul music with a strong jazz influence,” in a 2017 KEXP interview. The

trio’s songs will sound both familiar and fresh, laden with deep groove and finger-snapping soul style. .

This Seattle-based trio is organled a la Booker T. & the M.G.s and like that legendary outfit, brings a soulful, funky sound reminiscent of the groovy ‘60s and ‘70s. Lamar started as a drummer and trumpet player, but after seeing renowned Seattle organist Joe Doria play, has been coaxing magic out of Hammond since he was 22 years old. Hammond B3, he plays music at his home church in Hackensack, New Jersey. Matthew Whitaker is just 18 years old.

Let that sink in. A keyboard phenom who was born blind was given his first keyboard at the age of 3 and, at the age of 9 taught himself to play the organ. At 13 he became the youngest artist to be endorsed

by Hammond in its 82-year history. He’s nothing short of an amazing player, as producer Ray Chew said. “He’s not extraordinary because he’s blind.

He’s extraordinary because he’s extraordinary.” Prepare to be amazed.

VERONICA SWIFT Jazz vocalist Veronica Swift is no stranger to the Telluride Town Park Stage. In fact, she first appeared at the Telluride Jazz Festival at the age of 10 with Dave Adam’s Young Razzcals Jazz Project and with saxophonist Richie Cole. In 2011 she sang with that year’s Guest of Honor, Paquito D’Rivera, and by 2016 she appeared here on her own with the Eric Gunnison Trio.

In a sense she’s grown up right before our eyes. The child of touring musicians — her father is jazz pianist Hod O’Brien and her mother is jazz vocalist and educator Stephanie Nakasian — she is no stranger to the road. She’s put in the miles with Benny Green Trio, Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at 28 | telluridejazz.org

Lincoln Center Orchestra, and Chris Botti, as well as high profile appearances in China and Switzerland at jazz events.

CHA WA The Cha Wa funk was so good at 2017’s Telluride Jazz Festival, we’ve brought them back.

You’ll remember that Cha Wa is Mardi Gras Indian slang for, “We’re coming for you!” Cha Wa has raised the funk bar ever higher with their latest release, Spyboy, a scintillating collection of songs that oozes brass, funk and the Mardi Gras Indian culture of New Orleans.

The Meters, Dr. John, the Marsalis family, the Neville Brothers and Trombone Shorty. Cha Wa’s live act is a colorful display of traditional Indian costumes and crack musicianship.

Those costumes are handmade masterpieces, beaded and sewn together by the band members themselves, right down to the boots. Speaking of boots, put yours on the dance floor for Cha Wa. Like you could do anything else but dance.

By the age of 13, jazz caught his mind and his journey took another direction entirely.

With the Disco Biscuits, he has taken his skills into the jam rock world of improvisational excursions, but has always maintained a particular affinity for jazz. Bassist and composer Fratecelli is a touchstone in the Philadelphia and New York music scenes and has played with Melody Gardot, Robert Glasper, G Love and Matisyahu as well as with his groundbreaking ensemble, Fresh Cut Orchestra. Scarano, another fixture on the Philly music scene sits on the throne for this combo and is an educator with University of The Arts, Camden County College, The Boysie Lowery Living Jazz Residency and the Education Committee of Philly Drum Project. VICTOR WOOTEN BAND VICTOR WOOTEN IS SYNONYMOUS WITH THE BASS GUITAR. IN FACT, ROLLING STONE NAMED HIM ONE OF THE TOP 10 BASS GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME. NO ARGUMENT HERE.

Victor’s from a musical family and is the youngest of five musician brothers. He learned his instrument because the family band needed a bass player. By the age of 8 he was so good he earned the name Bass Ace. Now a five-time Grammy winner with a slew of acclaimed solo albums and the distinction

TURKUAZ Telluride loves Turkuaz. In what has been a story of love at first sight, this Brooklyn-based, notkidding-around, soul-funk outfit won hearts and booties with its high energy live shows over the last few years they’ve toured into the valley.

We just had to have them back after last year when they knocked it out of Town Park

of being a founding member of Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, he is sought out as a teacher. But he’s not just any teacher. His camps are intimate affairs in which he takes part every day and, because he’s a naturalist at heart, nature plays a big part in the camp experience.

His book, “The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music,” is taught in elite music schools including Berklee College of Music and at Stanford University. He’s a musician that leads with his heart.

ROBERTRANDOLPH &THE FAMILY BAN Robert grew up in the House of God Church in New Jersey, where music plays a pivotal role in helping worshippers get closer to God. Called sacred steel by its practitioners, it is passionate, ferociously-played music that gets both congregations and secular audiences on their feet. Robert knew nothing but sacred music and the church until he was a teenager. He’d never heard of Buddy Guy or The Allman Brothers.

But when he discovered the worlds of soul, funk and blues, he blended those sounds with the rousing form of gospel he knew so well. “It’s all connected,” he has said. Robert has taken the secular world by storm and is a fixture on the festival circuit, where he and his band’s improvisational wizardry stands shoulder to shoulder with any jam band on the bill.

Their latest record is Got Soul and yes, it does. It earned him a Grammy nomination in 2017 for Best Contemporary Blues Album. On record and live, the band brings on the heat with a soulful Earth, Wind & Fire vibe, coupled with the loose-yet-tight communal collaboration made famous by bands like Sly & The Family Stone.

He’s got this compulsion to get on his feet and dance, letting his band set the kettle on high while he moves with abandon across the stage. You’ll be dancing, too. After all, this is church and it’s time to raise your hands in the air and testify.

THE FUNK

LETTUCE Berklee College of Music was where it all began. Boston, 1992. Drummer Adam Deitch, guitarist Adam Smirnoff, bassist Erick “Jesus” Coomes, keyboardist and vocalist Nigel Hall, saxophonist Ryan Zoidis and trumpet player Eric Bloom were all teens attending a music program offered by the elite music school.

United by a shared love for the funkiest of the funky — bands like Earth, Wind & Fire, Herbie Hancock and Tower of Power — they cooked all that summer. They didn’t play together again until a couple years later as undergrads at Berklee. When they weren’t in class they combed the Boston club scene asking owners for gigs. “Let us play.” You get it. Music in the hands and minds of such gifted players as these cats can, and does, go in some far out directions. It’s all grounded in funk, soul and jazz and features deep groove SUNDAY MAIN FESTIVAL STAGE 7:30 PM

and mind-blowing improvisational passages.

Another profound influence for the band, and one that pins their jazz cred in the red, is Miles Davis. The band’s 2017 EP Witches Stew is a fitting tribute that takes on Davis’ classic 1970 release “Bitches Brew,” as well as “In A Silent Way” and other compositions from Davis’ groundbreaking electric period. It’s remarkable, ethereal and utterly channels Davis’ genius.

And when Lettuce plays live they shine. Off the chain, seamless jams are a hallmark of this unique ensemble. They give what they get. As bassist Coomes says, “some of these shows we’ve played over the past couple years have been so amazing, it’s like you go home a different person.”

It’s safe to say that after Lettuce blows the tops off the mountains we’ll all be different people. Lettuce. Play.

TROY ANDREWS, BETTER KNOWN AS TROMBONE SHORTY, IS AN ELECTRIFYING PLAYER WHOSE PRODIGIOUS TALENT WAS KNOWN FROM THE TIME HE WAS BIG ENOUGH TO HOIST A TROMBONE. BORN INTO A MUSICAL FAMILY IN NEW ORLEANS’ TREME DISTRICT, TROY MASTERED TRUMPET AND DRUMS BEFORE SETTLING ON THE INSTRUMENT THAT GAVE HIM HIS NICKNAME. His gift was nurtured at the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts where he studied music theory, ear training and instrument instruction, taught by master teachers. He joins a list of graduates that include Harry Connick, Jr. and Wynton and Branford Marsalis.

Troy is a sought after session man and has appeared on records by diverse artists such as Mark Ronson, Zac Brown Band, Eric Clapton, Galactic, Lenny Kravitz, Rod Stewart, She & Him, Dierks Bentley and Bettye LaVette. His own records have garnered him critical and popular acclaim, including a Grammy nomination for Backatown, his 2010 release on Verve. White House and other hallowed stages add to his impressive resume, not to mention his numerous stints on television and in movies, including playing himself on HBO’s Treme.

He’s also been recognized for his humanitarian work, bringing The Crescent City’s rich, musical heritage and instruments to students in New Orleans schools.

His latest record, Parking Lot Symphony on Blue Note, is a lively outing featuring some of New Orleans best players on Troy’s original compositions and classic covers by Allan Toussaint and The Meters.

He and Orleans Avenue will light this stage on fire with their fiery and contemporary take on New Orleans jazz music traditions. Get those Mardi Gras beads swingin’!
