Transit District in need of volunteers

CAMPUS CALENDAR Monday, Dec. 3

The North County Transit District (NCTD) is looking for volunteers to serve as station ambassadors for the new sprinter light rail line.

Ambassadors will be asked to spend time at their local neighborhood stations to help introduce their neighbors to the new train in the opening weeks of service.

Those interested are encouraged to apply, however no train experience is required. Community groups such as neighborhood associations, service organizations and other interested groups are encouraged to apply. NCTD will provide training for qualified individuals to learn how to reply to "frequently asked questions", reading timetables and using the entire NCTD family of services.

After more than a month of questions regarding the September and October bomb threats on Palomar College's San Marcos campus, an extensive investigation by the Palomar College Police Department has led to an arrest in the case.

William Morris Hall, 36, was

apprehended on Nov. 19 at his San Marcos residence and immediately booked into the Vista County jail.

Hall, who was a full-time employee for Aramark food services at Palomar, pleaded not guilty on Nov. 26 to six felony counts of false information, including charges of making multiple bomb threats, criminal threats and reporting a false emergency to police.

Hall is being held on a $510,000 bail in the Vista County jail.

"I'm very happy," Palomar president Robert Deegan said.

"We're glad to link our evidence to a (specific) individual."

Palomar's Chief of Police Tom Plotts said in a press release that the bomb threats were

received by phone on September 13 and 19, and again on October 18, which resulted in a number of evacuations, including an evacuation of the children's daycare center on the San Marcos campus.

"I don 't believe there is anything more mean-spirited than to target children," Deegan said at the time of the second scare.

Plotts said that the college's police department began their investigation immediately fol-

lowing the initial bomb threat.

"During the course of the twomonth investigation, several search warrants were written and key evidence was collected," he said.

Hall, who has a criminal record that includes prior convictions for battery, false imprisonment, mayhem, and assault with a deadly weapon and burglary, faces a maximum of three years in prison for each TURN TO

Every year Palomar College sponsors the Great American Smoke Out - a day when smokers are asked to voluntarily give up smoking for one whole day and, in doing so, take the first step toward a smoke-free future.

"We are hear to educate the students along with quit kits which have suckers, toothpicks and candy to put something other than a cigarette in their mouth," said Vista Community Clinic representative Liliana Sandoval. "The cancer society has found that most people that quit find the first few days to be the hardest and quitting for those days will hopefully lead to quitting all together. We are giving information about the harmful effects what to do when you are ready to quit and how you can continue to be committed."

A jar of butts that was collected on campus was on display and people were able to guess how many are in the jar. A $25 gift card was the first place prize for who ever guessed the closest to the amount, which was approximately 690 butts.

Weekly lecture series focuses on technology's impact on life science WAYLAND BLUE THE TELESCOPE

Palomar College examined the importance of technology to the development of life sciences during the Campus Explorations lecture series on Nov.14.

Palomar assistant professor of Physiology, Richard M. Albistegui DuBois, discussed the numerous advances in medicine and biology made possible by technological development. He especially emphasized the advances made possible by the advent of microscopy.

"There are things we can do that just the idea never even came up," Albistegui DuBois said.

He clarified his point by showing a graphic of a glowing tobacco plant that had been genetically engineered.

College, police follow through with arrest This semester has certainly been a crazy one, filled with cancelled classes due to continuous bomb threats allegedly made by a former cafeteria employee.

This chaos is making our once predictable world completely unknown.

Amongst this chaos, Palomar College Police have succeeded in staying focused and have made the important arrest, giving students and faculty a breath of fresh air.

Palomar police arrested William M. Hall, 36, on Nov. 19. Hall was sent to county jail on charges of making bomb threats, reporting a false emergency, and making criminal threats. Hall recently pleaded not guilty to the charges in a Vista court.

Police believe Hall was responsible for making all three phoned-in bomb threats, the first of which took place on Sept.

13, the second on Sept. 19, and the final bomb threat on Oct. 18.

Aramark Food Services, which provides food for Palomar, employed Hall. He is also a former Palomar student.

Closing in on the end of the semester, many students have forgotten about the multiple threats that took place in the beginning of the semester and have moved on.

Thankfully, Palomar administrators and police did not give up hope on finding the person responsible for making our semester so uncertain. After the first threat, Palomar police and President Robert Deegan said they would find the culprit and they believe they have done just that.

They continued to strive for an answer and kept up their hard work until they were able to put closure to a seemingly neverending ordeal.

One of the obstacles this semester that has been tested the most was the safety of the Palomar students and staff.

Fortunately, we can now see that the administration is truly trying to do the best that they can for all of us.

One of the questions that is still left unanswered is if he is the culprit, why would Hall have done this in the first place? Did he just not want to go to work those three days or was he seriously considering harming the students and staff of the college?

Whatever it may be, it definitely should make the college reconsider whom it is hiring and giving contracts too.

If Aramark or any other company does business on the campus that employs more than 3,000 staff and more than 30,000 students, shouldn't a background check be mandatory?

We aren't suggesting fingerprinting and a full cavity search, but with the VIrginia Tech tragedy still fresh on everybody's minds, the least a campus can do is ensure the safety of its students and faculty by doing a check of an employee's criminal history.

After much confusion from the bomb threats, there are still some communication issues that need to be addressed. Like the irony of sending an e-mail to notify students of a blackout, there are still kinks that the administration needs to work out before they can get everyone's trust and approval.

There may still be some things that can be improved, but at least we have made a big step in the right direction.

When "CSI: Miami's" Lt. Horatio Caine cocks his head, removes his sunglasses for the nth time in the episode and utters some hyper-cheesy line like, "Evidence ... as always ... will speak for itself," it's hard not to scream at the television: "Who writes this stuff?"

(For the record: David Caruso, aka Caine, doesn't sound or look any less ridiculous on an iPod.) Members of the Writers Guild of America do.

But the television and film writers won't be crafting any new one-liners for Caine or any Hollywood or New York character - fictional or otherwise in the short term.

The other area of discontent for writers is how to divvy up DVD revenues.

Film and TV fans are expected to shell out $16.4 billion on DVDs this year. A writer receives about 3 cents on a typical DVD selling for $20.

The strike's effects will first become obvious in the offerings of Leno, Letterman, Kimmel, Conan, Stewart and Colbert.

These masters of snappy oneliners pegged to the news certainly can't be expected to come up with punch lines on their own.

Bring on the re-runs.

may have only half of a full season's episodes completed.

TV fare that won't be affected by a writers' strike: Unscripted, not-even-close-to-real-life "reality" shows. And sports.

Don't forger the age-old reality show known as the news.

Although a dearth of new episodes of "Two and a Half Men" and the latest late-night wisecrack about Dick Cheney no doubt will deeply affect some viewers' quality of life, it's important to put this issue in context.

These aren't doctors or police officers or teachers striking.

They aren't trash collectors or airline pilots or the computer tech crew at your company.

They write scripts for TV and movies.

Heaven forbid that this might force people to turn off the televevision and pick up a book.

Thank you Dick and Michelle for your sympathies and condolences. It's been amazing to me that the Telescope ran four articles about Taarna in this issue. Many people who knew her are posting blogs about her - there has been an amazing outpouring of remembrance that brings some comfort.

Thanksgiving was once a celebration where family and friends joined together to give thanks for their blessings and then enjoyed a delectable feast. .

That is until people began to realize they weren't really grateful for what they had and wanted more.

Increasingly more people choose to skip the traditional Thanksgiving dinner and family gathering event to camp outside stores that claim to offer one-time bargains.

This year one of the items on my Christmas list was a PlayStation 2. I went online to shop for the best deal around.

Every major retail store was advertising their "Black Friday" deals.

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving when the unofficial Christmas shopping begins. It's also known to be the day when stores offer door buster deals and huge sales to draw people in, stores usually opening their doors as early as 4 a.m.

The advertisements included tips for scoring the best deals.

Best Buy for example opened its doors at 5 a.m. but would start handing out tickets for their limited items to those in line at 3 a.m.

This is outrageous. There is no reason people should be in line hours before a store opens.

The most disturbing fact is that people are misled to believe the

deals offered are the best around and only available on black Friday. a Wal Mart advertised PlayStation 2 for $129.99 on "Black Friday", while Circuit City's regular price for the same game console is $129.99.

Thinking they were clever, people began camping out in front of stores with tents and portable televisions as early as 2 p.m.

Thanksgiving Day, while others foolishly showed up at 6 p.m.

To the people who stood in line for hours thinking they were getting a once in a lifetime deal it serves you well.

In Mexico we have an old proverb; For every early bird there is always someone who doesn't sleep. This is exactly what happened to people who later found out that they didn't get the deal they had hoped for.

What's next? Camping out in front of ¡the store since the day before Thanksgiving?

Although it is funny to see the length people are willing to go to obtain material things, it is not a stretch at the rate things are going. People have lost sight of the purpose Gf Thanksgiving.

Originally it was a day families joined together to reflect and give thanks for what they harvested for the season, before feasting.

Today many families join together to give thanks for what they have accomplished throughout the year, and then dig into a seemingly endless dinner.

Unfortunately, contrary to the purpose of the previous nights dinner, Black Friday brings out the

worst in people.

Starting in the parking lot, all you hear is honking and screaming.

People swoop into parking lots with total disregard for the person with their blinkers on, because they feel they won't get inside in time to save a bit of money.

Confrontations among men and women break out left and right.

The lines just to get into stores are ridiculous, but those to checkout are that much worse. People walk side by side like sardines in a can down the aisles, pushing and taking things out of the hands of others.

While shopping at a Coach outlet in Carlsbad I saw an older woman snatch a duffel bag from another woman who was accompanied by her child and husband.

The woman took the bag and didn't even acknowledge what she had done. The man was simply disgusted by the woman's behavior and asked his wife to leave the store immediately.

The chaos causes acts of violence among the crazed customers who are after a specific item on sale. Rudeness toward employees and others often leads to physical assault.

As was the case for a Best Buy employee who was p~ched in the face by one of two men who attempted to purchase merchandise with fraudulent credit cards.

Employees ran after the man who then pulled a knife. This luckily didn't end in devastation but it is only a glimpse of what the Christmas season craze brings.

Give me a break. The real cost of college is in the textbooks. $5 off tuition is a tiny drop in the bucket. If Palomar really wants to help students, maybe they should consider a bookstore not owned by efollett. The prices and lack of used books are ridiculous. Dear Katrina, may your memories and the passage of time help to heal your pain and sorrow. I send you my deepest condolences.

As said before me, instead of force communities for pay for the tuition of others, the college needs to allow competition, the bookstore is just one example where the college is costing students boatloads of money, the 5 dollar drop in price is nothing compared to a 250$ physics book + 40$ physics lab book. The unit costs are acceptable, its everything else that ridiculously overpriced.

Israeli, Palestinian natives·discuss ho eful end of war WAYLAND BLUE THE TELESCOPE

An Israeli man and a Palestinian man stood side-by-side, condemning the current violence in their homelands at Palomar College during a lecture on Nov. 15 The two men, Miko Peled and Nader Elbanna, spoke to 20 students and several faculty members during the lecture sponsored by the Muslim Student Association.

Elbanna, an American Palestinian, lost his homeland, and then his best friend to the Israelis.

Peled, an American Israeli, lost his niece to a Palestinian suicide bomber in Jerusalem. The two men found themselves in San Diego and five years later have joined together to help victims of the violence in the Holy Land thorough fundraising efforts as well as assisting in the formation of discussion groups designed to move people like them beyond the hatred and one-sided rhetoric.

Peled began the discussion.

"I think part of the problem is that we have all become comfortably numb," he said.

Peled explained that the conflict has been: going on for so long that the focus is on managing it rather

than solving it.

"This is a problem that can and should be solved," he said.

He added the violence could end.

"Israelis and Palestinians are natural allies," he said. .

Peled explained that they are very similar and that an integrated state is possible. However, instead there is war in which the innocent people on both sides are the victims.

"I hope you are enraged ... enraged in a way that we are committed to working together," he said.

Peled said that the upcoming peace summit is a sign of the misguided approaches to solving the conflict. He said that such measures as peace talks or a two state solution is a way of managing the conflict without any real hope of solving it.

"People can not go on living like this forever," Peled said.

A unified Israeli and Palestinian state is the only real solution he argued.

Peled, who was raised in Jerusalem, said that a large part of the problem is there is not much communication between the Israeli and Palestinian people.

"I never met a Palestinian grow-

ing up," he said. "It was not until many years later when I was living In San Diego that I met Palestinians." As a result of this interaction, "I heard the (Palestinian) narrative for the first time," he said: He proceeded to investigate the new historical accounts written by Israelis on the issue.

"As soon as the war broke out, the state of Israel began a massive ethnic cleansing," he said.

On the other side and standing next to Peled was Nader Elbanna, who lost a close friend to the Israeli military.

"What you here from Miko tonight, you here from an Israeli and not a Palestinian," he said.

He emphasized that cooperation and integration between the two sides is what is needed.

"We are here to share with you our personal experiences," Elbanna said.

An audience member asked what the solution to the problem should be.

"We are not going to invent the wheel again," Peled said, then pointed out the United Nations' resolution 242.

Transfer Center valuable resource for academic future Palomar counselors share transfer tips to stay ahead HILLARY CLASPILL f'OR THE TELESCOPE

Every year, thousands of students attend Palomar College with a main goal in mind- transferring.

"Transferring is a top priority, it's the reason I'm here at Palomar," said 19-year old Palomar student Brandon Lavorgna.

Many students come to Palomar to complete their general education so they can eventually transfer to a four-year college or university. But many students fail to be informed with the correct knowledge of how to transfer.

Transferring is quite an intricate process and requires a lot of time, hard work and dedication.

"Not all students are familiar with the transfer requirements, and those who don't come in to get the information rely on their peers who may give them inaccurate information," said ·Transfer Center adviser Dagmar Royer.

Palomar counselor · Gabriel Sanchez said he recommends the following steps to transfer students: 1.) Visit the Transfer Center and research universities and major options. Palomar has college fairs and university repre-

sentatives that visit the college every month.

2.) Choose a major and university. Counselors teach classes geared to helping students in these areas. (Counseling 101, 165, and 170) 3.) Understand the requirements for that major and what needs to be done in order to transfer to that university (www.assist.org).

4.) See a counselor to develop an educational plan (CSU!IGETC) 5.) Follow your plan - pass your classes.

6.) Follow-up with a counselor to make sure you're on track and to get updates.

7.) Apply 8.) Submit all college transcripts.

Making a visit to the transfer center or counseling department is one of the key steps to get on

track and stay on track during the transfer process. Meeting with a counselor is not mandatory, but is highly recommended.

"When I went into the counseling office I found them to be very helpful and now I know exactly what to do to transfer where I want to," said student Andrew Vause.

There are many counselors to choose from, each unique with different strengths and specialties, so if you do not like one the first time around, don't give tip.

"Counselors provide academic, career and personal counseling," Sanchez said. "We are here to be a support network by providing encouragement, motivation and advocating such as helping a student with an appeal letter if they did not get accepted."

Former Palomar student Nicole Bosch is one of many Palomar students who have

transferred to Cal State San Marcos.

"One of the most important things to do in order to transfer is to make sure you stay on track," she said. "It is very easy to fall behind and end up taking a few years to complete your general education than you thought."

There are many opportunities for students at Palomar to stay on track and achieve their goals.

The Transfer Center is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.

The Counseling Department is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Palomar also offers application workshops, TAG workshops, transfer classes and a wide variety of information available in the counseling department.

However, this program remains unknown to most Palomar College students.

"I'd like (the students) to even know," Schaeffer said about the program.

The Diesel Tech building is · located behind the Child Development Center and is the building surrounded by the engines.

Schaeffer said the future plans of this department are to move into a new building, as the one currently being occupied is in need of expansion.

program is to give vocational training and real world experience to students, Pollizzi said. "(The program) prepares students to go out in the field," Pollizzi said. "And maintain, prepare, update (and) improve existing diesel equipment."

The benefits of the Diesel Technology program are the ability to help student get well paying jobs while still in college, as well as developing skills that will help them in the job market of the rest for their lives, Pollizzi said.

When people think of diesel technology, they think of people working on the nuts and bolts of a machine, Schaeffer and Pollizzi said. They both agreed that it still remains an important part of the work, but computers are into the newer technology and play an important a roll in diagnosing a problem as a toolbox.

The concepts covered in Diesel Tech classes include diesel mechanics, engine rebuilding, alternative fuels and basic hydraulics.

While the diesel engines of the past were known to be noisy, snioky, and underperforming

Forney is in his first year teaching at Palomar. He received the position after his wife saw the posting and encouraged him to apply. He previously taught at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis for one year, then Carleton College in Minnesota for three years and at Arizona State University for 13 years.

He teaches World Religions, Religion in America, and Ways of Understanding Religion at Palomar.

The Religious Department Chair, Terry Humphrey, said his "obvious knowledge of the subject matter and his relaxed style he uses to teach," are reasons for his hiring.

"He is confident about his material and he sets up a non-intimidating classroom for students," Humphrey said.

The Religious Studies department is very happy to have him at Palomar, Humphrey said.

"The yearly event is to create awareness and hopefully change the lifestyles of smokers campus wide," Sandoval said.

Fliers featured information about the harms of not only tobacco, but also marijuana hookahs and bidis, which all have all the same harmful effect of cigarettes.

"Smoking is a huge problem on campus lots of people don't care about how is effects others I hope that this can make people more aware," said student Brian Swift.

Fliers related to second hand smoke, social smoking and guides to quitting which reveal some of the psychology that is related to why people choose to smoke, where handed out.

"The information will hopefully answer questions may not have been considered" Sandoval said.

The tobacco control program at Vista Community Clinic in conjunction with the Health Services Center provided the resources to give Palomar students all they need when it comes to being smoke free.

"The Great American Smoke Out was founded by the American Cancer Society and has been strong for nearly 20 years," Sandoval said.

The Hives 'The Black and White Album' too predictable RIGO HERNANDEZ THE TELESCOPE

The Hives lived up to their ego at the beginning of the millennium: explosive garage punk that had nothing to envy from the Buzzcocks or Iggy and the Stooges, leaders of the neorock revolution alongside The Strokes and The White Stripes. All of this has sadly climaxed to a painfully predictable batch of songs in their latest installment "The Black and White Album."

The Swedish quintet, who are under pressure from their record label Interscope to sell sell sell, have sold their first single "Tick Tick Boom" to a Nike commercial and are currently t h e opening act for Maroon 5.

In defense of The Hives t h e y 'The Black and White donatAlbum' ed their fee to OUT OF FOUR STARS an antisweatshop corporation.

"The Black and White Album" is formulaic garage rock at best. Few songs stand out but most are as predictable and boring like the albums title.

"T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S.," "Hey Little World," and "Well Alright" save The Hives from going a step backward into an irritating one chord garage band.

Just as fast and as loud as their music is, the songs hastily start becoming irritating and hard to distinguish.

"Tick Tick Boom " the first single opens the 'album and is classic Hives, loud with a bass interlude. There is a moment of genius in the song when lead singer Pelle Almqvist sings the "tick's" followed by an explosion, fittingtothebandsdynamic style.

Sadly, The Hives black and white uniform alludes to the tasteless mime songs, "Puppet On a String" and "A Stroll Through Hive Manor Corridors."

"Puppet On a String" is a piano song with claps. There is no creativity in this song and Almqvist's absurdity makes the song just that.

The instrumental song "A Stroll Through Hive Manor Corridors" sounds like a mime song or a terribly orchestrated song for a bad black-and-white film.

"T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S" is a rarity which features Almqvist singing in a low pitch. It sounds like 1970s groove disco with a chorus fitting

the band's humble style, "We rule the world this is our world." This is followed by a robotic voice enunciating "T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S." Well know for their loud music, The Hives outdid themselves with "Hey Little World," a deafening experience. The song is lively and catchy, a reminder of what The Hives are capable of when they jump out of their formulas and aren't trying to be annoying.

An unexpected success is

found when Almqvist is complimented with someone else's vocals. Almqvist's energy and passion is magnified when others sing with him. In "Well Alright" there is a break from Almqvist's fast vocals and loud guitars with a calm and tranquil voice with onestring notes, only to be properly followed by Almqvist's chaos.

It is hard to distinguish "Giddy Up" and "Square One Here I Come." Like

most of the songs in the album they have no identity and all come from the same bad recipe. Both songs have excruciatingly repetitive sounds.

The cowbell in "Square Orte Here I Come" tries to brin some personality to the song, but The Hives have already achieved nonsense.

Once revolutionary in their dynamic and fresh garage-punk sound, has turned into a forgettable black-and-white album.

Concert Hour showcases Chinese tradition WAYLAND BLUE THE TELESCOPE

Classical Chinese instrumental music and dance were showcased during Palomar's Concert Hour.

Members of the San Diego Chinese Music Ensemble and the Clear Cosmos Dance Team performed and played a few Chinese classic standards for a full house Nov.15.

Music professor Ellen Weller introduced the performers.

"The music of China has been extremely influential," Weller said.

The Chinese classical music tradition has paralleled the Western in its development, she said.

Weller also emphasized the differences between the traditions.

Where Western classical music uses wood and brass, Chinese classical music concentrates on silk and bamboo.

The first piece, titled "Silver Clouds Chasing the Moon," opened with a slow reflective mood. The performers played with a meditative melodic quality, reflecting the style used in much of Chinese classical music.

The next song, called "The Tune of Joy," demonstrated the other end of the spectrum. It flowed with a much more up beat and rhythmic quality. It was a style well represented by the title of the piece.

After this came the perform-

ance of "Kang Ding Love Song."

This featured a greater diversity of rhythms than the other two. It opened with upbeat tempo, and then progressed into a complex orchestration of various tones and beats, which gave the song a special liveliness.

Next came a dance by the Pure Cosmos Dance Team, titled "Pure Lotus."

It was an interesting exploration of pre-Qing dynasty dance forms.

It emphasized flowing movements and strict choreography. The dancers skillfully represented their style.

More instrumental songs from the Ensemble, which included "Jasmine Flower and "Purple

Bamboo Melody," followed. These further demonstrated the range and diversity in the Chinese classical music forms.

The Ensemble closed with their rendition of "Susanna." It was interesting to hear a traditional Western folk song played on Chinese instruments. It was also a reminder of the heritage of Chinese Americans, who took part in many important events in the nation's Western expansion. From the gold rush to the building of the first trans-continental railroad, the Chinese-Americans played a major part in doing the hard work of building the nation's infrastructure and obtaining its natural resources.

The hour ended with "Buddha's Light Shines on All," performed by the dance team.

This dance was an instructive clear example of Buddhist ritual performqnce. It opened with the dancers performing a number of Buddhist ritual hand movements and gestures common to the Mahayana Buddhist tradition of China. It continued with its emphasis on these themes from the way the dancers held their hands to their position on stage. It was an insightful look into Eastern religious concepts.

The performers will be putting on another show Jan. 15 at the California Center for Performing Arts in Escondido.

He introduced four specific fields in biology that have been impacted by technology. They are microscopy, neuroscience, genetics and prosthetics.

He explained microscopy as a fascination people have of observing the living.

"People have been interested at looking at living things," Albistegui DuBois said.

Albistegui DuBois then explained that the limited only to what we could see with the naked eye in our investigation of life, which leads to a number of misconceptions in science.

He said that many of these misconceptions began to be dispelled in the 1600's with the invention of the microscope and the rise of microscopy. This made possible the discovery of microorganisms and an understanding of what they do. He said that life sciences became more diverse. Advances came faster because we could know more about biology.

Life science became dominated with, "The idea that I can look closer," he said.

He later discussed the impact technology has on the study of genetics.

"Another thing that people wondered about for a long time is Inheritance," Albistegui DuBois said.

He said the various traits that seem to pass from one generation to the next, which caused people to wonder about inheritance.

"Even how you hang your tools in your garage is passed down through an inheritance path-way," Albistegui DuBois said.

He discussed the work of Mendel on genetics with his punnet squares.

"Mendel's work was very low tech," he said.

"Sometimes it is just a great idea."

On the other hand, he said that the discovery and study of DNA did need technological advancements.

"The structure of DNA had to be elucidated by very careful experimentation," · Albistegui DuBois said. "This was a revolutionary shift."

Their discovery made rapid advances in biotech-

nology, such as gene therapy, genetically engineered crops, and cloning. He added that biotechnology is as old as agriculture. He showed a graphic of a beer mug and explained that the fermentation of beer is a very old form of biotechnology.

He then described the advances in neuroscience made possible by technology. In the past, people disagreed on the function off the brain.

Some thought of it as, "maybe a radiator," he said. He explained that technology such as neuro imaging has paved the way for us to actually understand how the brain works.

Albistegui DuBois ended by discussing the development of prosthetic from peg legs to fully neurologically integrated extensions of the body made possible by technology.

Some of these advances are cochlear implants, which give the deaf the ability to hear. Another advancement looming on the horizon is bionic vision, or "he ability to give sight to the blind, Albistegui DuBois said.

For a short inexpensive holiday vacation or day trip this fall, here are some ideas that include exploring an old town, visiting historical sites, shopping and camping in the mountains or traveling to an island.

Julian Mountain Julian is the premier mountain getaway, just an hour east of San Diego in the beautiful Cuyamaca Mountains.

Julian was rooted in the 1870s gold rush and is a charming old town.

Julian is famous for their apples and fall colors. Winter brings snowfalls and bright, crisp, "Christmassy" days.

Julian is now fast becoming a great destination for families, hikers, weddings and corporate retreats.

On Main Street, you can take a ride on a horse-drawn carriage around the town. Also, specialty shops line the streets.

Other interesting things to do in Julian include visiting the Julian Jail, a two-cell jail built in 1914. It served as classy overnight accommodations for town drunks. For a time the jail contained the only indoor toilet in Julian.

On the corner of C and Fourth Street, Julian Pioneer Cemetery contains graves and headstones of mn.nv Julian pioneer family membe" Tulian's Little Attic boasts the

finest lace collection in California, plus 1896 to 1913 clothing, photographs, household and mining equipment, Victorian era pianos, an original Julian City buggy and sleigh, extensive exhibit of Indian artifacts and animal and bird mountings, all indigenous to the area.

Built in the mid-1880s to serve as a brewery for Peter Meyerhofer, the structure was converted to a blacksmith shop, which operated there until the mid-1930s.

While visiting Julian, a close place to camp is the Pinezanita Ranch Campgrounds located four miles south of Julian. The campground is clean and quiet. This campground is rated as one of the top ten in southern California.

The individual campsites all have shade trees, picnic tables and fire rings. Each site is leveled on pea-gravel to set up any size tent or just spread out in a sleeping bag.

The campground provides a restroom building with sinks, toilets and hot water for showers.

Big Bear Lake Big Bear Lake is an impressive camping spot. The beautiful Serrano Campground is situated amongst the tall pines on the north shore, steps from Big Bear Lake.

The campground is equipped with new facilities that include showers, toilets and telephones. It has tent and RV sites with hook ups. The rates 'are as follows: Single site $24 (8 people) Double site $48.46 (16) people Extra vehicles $5.00 Portions of the campgrounds are for reservation, other sites are on a first-come, first-served basis and campers may select any open, nonreserved site.

Santa Cruz Island Santa Cruz Island is a magnificent place to camp. The island is located about 20 miles from the mainland coast, and travel time from Ventura Harbor on a catamaran is only one hour to east Santa Cruz Island Scorpion Anchorage.

Being the largest Channel Island, Santa Cruz is also the most diverse with interesting geological features including two mountain ranges, many canyons and a rugged shoreline.

Since the recent wildfires destroyed numerous campsites at local National Parks, the majority of state beach camping sites have been taken.

Jennum said if her team can keep their composure, it can excel this season.

Leading the charge for the Comets was co-captain Sabrina Gonzalez with 21 points.

Nikki Boone scored 19 points for Palomar, Jade Simmons notched 13 points and Kelli Brull added 11 points for the Comets.

Three days prior Palomar (4-3) blew by Fullerton College in a 52~ 36 victory Nov. 20.

The Palomar women's volleyball team received an at-large berth into the California Community College Southern California Regionals.

The bid came after the Comets defeated Grossmont in five games, 30-21, 30-20, 26-30, 26-30, 15-7.

Comets wrestling wins sixth state title

The Palomar women's cross country team finished in eighthplace in the state community college cross country championships at Woodward Park in Fresno Nov. 17.

Palomar's Erika HendricksonConner placed 16th with a time of 19:20.39 for the 5 kilometers race.

Palomar, ranked No. 1 in California, won the state community college dual wrestling championship for the sixth time Nov. 16.

The Comets (18-1) defeated Sierra College 22-16 at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Gym. Palomar received victories from 165-pound Lewis Gonzalez and 174-pound Caleb Smith.

Gonzalez, who was a two-time high school state champion, won by a pin.

I love the BCS because if there had been a playoff system this year, the final seconds of Missouri-Kansas would elapse, and we'd realize: Hey, they both can make the playoffs win or lose, so who cares until January?

It's the same way we watched New England-Indianapolis a few weeks ago: Nice game, but it doesn't count until they play again in January.

I love the BCS because it's different. I love the BCS because it's not the NFL, the NBA, NHL or baseball. I love the BCS because it isn't the Final Four.

Those other leagues and playoff systems all have their individual greatness, but college football is special.

I love the BCS because what happened to Michigan in September and to USC in October mattered. Mattered then, mattered a few weeks later, mattered now, will matter in January

and in January two decades from now.

I love the BCS because USC 35, Notre Dame 31, on Oct.15, 2005, was the most thrilling regular-season game of our lifetimes.

You never know when the thunder will strike: Appalachian State over Michigan; Stanford over USC; Kentucky over LSU; Arizona over Oregon.

I love the BCS because Cal fans

knew exactly what LSU's loss meant to them, and Ohio State fans knew exactly what Cal's loss meant to them, and everybody was tied together - from Tampa, Fla., to Eugene, Ore. - in that bizarre and wonderful BCS way.

A regular four- or eight-team playoff would just be a three-week TV show. A good TV show - an incredibly money-packed TV show - but a TV show, nonetheless.

I love the BCS because there's no way a four- or eight-team playoff guarantees that only the correct teams vie for the title.

Let's look at this season, and try to formulate an unquestionably fair four-team bracket: You've got LSU, Missouri, West Virginia and then ...who's your righteous fourth team, playoff people?

You're saying that there wouldn't be upheaval over the subjective selection of say, Ohio State over Oklahoma, USC, Georgia and Virginia Tech for the crucial final playoff spot?

Playoff proponents will argue, hey, then just expand it to an eight-team playoff! And I keep saying: That doesn't fix the main flaw- there's always going to be an argument when you subjectively exclude somebody from the tournament.

I love the BCS because this is one sport in which you can't precisely decide the title on the field.

There are too many teams and conferences for everybody to play everybody in the regular season to make sure it's balanced. And the physical punishment is too much to have football teams play elongated postseason schedules to whittle down the numbers.

Plus the bowl system is a permanent, quaint and lovable part of college football.

OK, I realize Cal fans who remember the 2004 political robbery by Mack Brown and his cohorts don't love the BCS influence game; but the decision to publish the coaches' final votes has cleared that up a bit.

I love the BCS because every

sports fan loved Boise State over Oklahoma in last January's Fiesta Bowl. I love that it wasn't just another quarterfinal playoff game.

I love the BCS because Boise would've lost by 20 points to Florida, Ohio State, USC or LSU if it played the next weekend. This way, the Broncos stormed off the field as America's darlings.

I love the BCS because of last year's No.1 Ohio State vs. No.2 Michigan game, which was the weightiest college football meeting in years and played like it.

If there had been a playoff, that game would've been meaningless -both teams would've automatically gotten playoff berths, win or lose.

I love the BCS so much that I get my friends angry by saying it so often.

I just love the BCS, and admit it: When you think about this incredible season of college football, you love it, too.
