Transfer students to soon walk in commencement

CAMPUS CALENDAR Tuesday, Nov.13 FREE FILM SERIES The weekly film series will be showing "Sexy Beast." The movie tells the story of Ray Winstone, a g;mgster who thinks he can retire from the life. The airing begins at 6:15 p.m. in Room P-32.

The Associated Student Government met Nov. 7 to discuss the following: • Sherry Titus said the effort to allow transfer students to walk in commencement is promising.

"Spring 2009 is the soonest it can happen," Titus said. "It's going to happen."

The only reason it can not happen sooner, she said, is because it has to be in the catalog. It is too late into this year for transfer students to participate, Titus said.

• The ASG is attending the Student Senate California Community Colleges.

"We are one of the strongest colleges," said ASG President Jesse Lynn.

• During the recent Region X meeting on Nov. 2, members were creating by-laws for the organization.

• Steven Ramirez was appointed to the second student position for the Police Advisory Committee.

• The Inter Club Council will hold "Food for Food" on Nov. 14. There will also be free food available under a donation fee.

• The Faculty Senate has approved Religion 101 and 102 as part of the Political Science and History section.

• According to Sherry Titus there are 12 known students and 14 known professors who have lost houses during the wildfires. During the Nov. 9 "Firestorm 2007 Donation Drive" every donation made was matched two-to-one.

GOVERNING BOARD MEETING Palomar's governing board will host its monthly meeting at 5 p.m. in the Governing Board Room. The meeting is open to the public.

Wednesday, Nov. 14 STUDENT GOVERNMENT MEETING The ASG will hold its weekly meeting at 1 p.m. in Room SU18. The meeting is open to the public.

Police Chief ponders parking prices Palomar Police Chief Tom Plotts presented his argument on why the $5 parking permit fee increase is necessary for the college during the Nov. 7 ASG meeting.

"We need to start re-engineering our parking lots," Plotts said.

There is nearly a 23-percent student increase since 1999, Plotts said. The parking lot behind the Health Services will be closing, he said. With the student increase and the Health Services parking lot closing, the police department, Plotts said, need to evaluate current staffing needs.

"The increase should have been done in Fall 2004," Plotts said. "We're not looking for an increase until Fall 2008."

Plotts said there are many problems Palomar needs to address, including working on the traffic flow of Comet Circle.

When the Fallbrook campus opens the police department will need to hire more full-time policemen, Plotts said.

There only eight full-time policemen as of right now, he said.

The San Marcos Fire Department arrived on Palomar's San Marcos campus on Oct. 31, after asmoke alarm was set off in achemistry classroom in the Natural Sciences Building. Students in the building were evacuated from their classrooms for more than an hour and some professors chose to continue their lectures outside.

"We are way behind in a lot of things," Plotts said.

The parking permit will rise from $35 to $40 next year.

The ASG has been working to keep the price at $35, but there are many police issues pending, said Paul Groom, Director of Student Activities.

"We have a large amount of things to do," Groom said. "And a small amount of money."

Palomar daycare accepting applications Palomar College's Child Development Center is accepting waiting list applications for the current semester.

The current fee for children three and under is $50.50 for a full day. For children three and over, the cost is $40 for a full day and $29.50 for a half day.

The Escondido Child Development Center will enroll children three to five year's old for three-hour blocks.

Palomar's center's are open the entire year, Monday through Friday.

The San Marcos center is open from 7 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Student gov't leader resigns ASG prez steps down from one-year tenure, former VP takes over position SHAHRAZAD ENCINIAS THE "'W':SCOPE

After an 11-month stint, Associated Student Government President Michelle Eichelberger suddenly resigned from her position on Oct. 16.

"It was really sudden," said ASG member Joseph Park. "I was in shock."

Park had worked with Eichelberger as ASG vice president during the Spring 2007 semester. That semester was Eichelberger's first semester as president.

"We asked her to stay on," said Jesse Lynn, new president of ASG. "And she decided to go. It's regrettable."

Eichelberger said she "no longer had efficacy on what the organization has become." There was extreme miscommunication, she said. However, Eichelberger would not get into detail about the communication problem.

"I believe that my time, service and effort are better elsewhere," Eichelberger said. "I'm thankful for serving in the position I had."

The ASG released a statement Nov. 7 which stated: "Although we have lost a very valuable person, we as a group are determined to follow through with the initiatives set by the ASG under the leadership of Michelle Eichelberger. We are looking for-

ward to serve the students and seeing our vision of a better campus completed."

Her resignation was unexpected, said Joe Madrigal, Student Services vice president.

"There's a leader for a time and if the time's not right, then the leader isn't right," Madrigal said.

Eichelberger's resignation sparked a fellow ASG member to follow in her steps and resign.

Former ASG senator Robert Rettenmaier immediately followed Eichelberger's action.

"I was mad," Rettenmaier said.

"What caused her resignation was uncalled for. I knew what was going on."

He believes that without Eichelberger, the ASG doesn't represent what is good for Palomar students. .

"I no longer believe in what ASG stood for," Rettenmaier said.

"They put their own agendas instead of the students."

The office of Student Affairs was going through a transition, said Eichelberger. It was a different environment, she said. After an abrupt resignation from former Director of Student Affairs Bruce Bishop, the interim position was facilitated by Sherry Titus. Titus was the former head coach for Comets women's basketball team.

This year many Palomar students may go without a Thanksgiving dinner.

The Extended Opportunities Programs and Services (EOP&S) hold an annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive to benefit students and their families.

However, this year it may be cancelled.

"Last year we helped over 500 families," said EOP&S Outreach Staff Assistant Anel Gonzalez. "We are on hold because of the fires."

Gonzalez said the organization has lost many of their usual corporate sponsors because they have opted to donate their money to the Red Cross instead. Usually the effort raises thousands of dollars from local companies such as Albertsons and Wal-Mart.

"A lot of students depend on this," said EOP&S Staff Assistant Erica Gomez.

"Unfortunately, funding just hasn't been available."

She said that last year there was about $3,500 raised along with a great deal of food.

"Donations have been really, really low," Gonzalez said.

"This year Costco sent us a $50 gift certificate."

EOP&S has helped support the tradition of a family meal for all students on Thanksgiving for the last 20 years. Full-time students whose families receive an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) rating of zero on the TURN TO

The first annual, Exploring Darwin at Palomar College drew in hundreds of students, faculty and staff. The event featured eight speakers who presented their spin on Darwin 's theory of natural selection.

"Believe it or not, our predator is bacteria," De Barros said.

He said he organized the event in an effort to promote the variety of disciplines related to Darwinism.

McClow said he was so intrigued by the lecture De Barros gave he stayed after everyone left to personally thank him.

If you build it

they will come Football is a tremendous part of campus life in college.

Every Saturday, the college community is united on the gridiron and both players and fans have the opportunity to collectively represent their school.

When The Telescope went to press, the Palomar College football team's record stood at 6-2( 4-2) on the season and in that span they have been consistently ranked in the top 25 in the J.C Gridwire polls among national community colleges.

Four of those victories have come in front of the Palomar faithful on the Comets' home field.

However, there is one major twist.

Palomar's home field is a "short" 15-minute trek off the main San Marcos campus at Escondido High School's Wilson Stadium.

Despite three national championships (1991, '93 and '98) and an impressive 2007 season, the Comets have been left out to dry.

Not only is the football team the only squad on campus next to women's and men's golf, to not play home games at Palomar, but the powers that be seem to have little interest in bringing the Comets home.

President Robert Deegan said in the Oct. 15 issue of The Telescope that since there are only five or six home games a season, the cost of a stadium would not equal the revenue gained from home games.

In Oct. 2005, the college initiated a campaign called "The Comet Campaign" with the hopes of raising money to make installations to the current practice field near the front of the college.

The estimated goal was $810,330 to make those modifications and the college raised an undetermined amount of money at Palomar "home" games. However, since the goal was put in place more than two years ago, talks of a stadium deal have faded.

How can the football program expect to be taken seriously without a home field?

How can a team expect to make a neutral field home?

Both questions are left unanswered by the college.

The lack of a home field has also affected the recruiting process.

"Recruiting is hard for us because athletes want to go to a school with state-of-the-art fields," said Palomar head coach Joe Early in the Oct. 15 issue of The Telescope.

Despite not offering recruits the luxuries of a state-of-the-art facility, Palomar has managed to recruit some noteworthy players. Last season's All-American quarterback Tyler Lorenzen, who has since transferred to the University of Connecticut, surprisingly excelled without a home field.

However, that is just one of the few cases where a Palomar football player has been offered a scholarship from a big-time Division I school.

It would make sense that a school that invests so much in recruits would want the fruits of their labor to be visible to the campus.

While the football team spends most of their time away, the Palomar Athletic Department provided the men's and women's soccer teams with a new soccer field last fall and construction on a new baseball field is expected to begin within the next year.

As the Comets put in the time and crammed on the practice field to prepare for the next Saturday opponent, they can't help but know that all their hard work will be seen in an off-campus arena that is too far for the masses.

Reflections on the 2007 wildfires WAYLAND BLUE THE TEI..ESCOPE

The 2007 wildfires were remarkable in many ways and one of the most destructive natural disasters in the nation's history.

It seems amazing how well they were handled given the chaos of the situation.

The wildfires displayed one of the most devastating disasters we have experienced here in southern California, and with it came a display of some of the most professional disaster relief in the nation.

Given the human limitation of the state's emergency personal, this disaster was incredibly well managed, compared to others.

One of the most outstanding examples of this superior management was the organization.

Over half a million people were orderly evacuated and moved to safe shelter with reliable infrastructure. There were no major problems with availability of food, water or other necessities, and reliable security was provided.

Most importantly, human life was surprisingly well protected.

Unfortunately great economic loss could not be avoided.

However, there was relatively low loss of life.

Fire fighters kept an eye on an approaching flame on Oct. 26 in Orange County, one of over 16 wildfires that ravished southern California in late October.

This is especially notable in comparison to other major disasters like Hurricane Katrina.

There was a much smaller death toll than in Katrina and to the 2003 Cedar fires.

A major reason for the low death toll was the reverse-911 system. This made the evacuations much more efficient than they have been in the past.

Many people, including myself, did not evacuate, however removing a majority of the population from the burn areas was necessary in order to save and protect many lives.

Also, statewide resources were quickly marshaled in anticipation of the disaster that the fires became. It was apparent from Monday morning that the combination of dry brush, high winds and low humidity would make the fires some of the most dangerous on record.

In the aftermath, we can see that they were.

The economic damage has gone over a billion dollars. Yet, even at the height of chaos, economic loss through crime and looting was kept to a minimum.

This was due to the effective deployment of the police and later the National Guard.

Along with a surprisingly limited looting considering the vulnerable state many houses and busi-

nesses were left in, law and order was preserved for the most part.

The dedication and sacrifice of the emergency response personal is also to thank. The men and women of the various fire and low enforcement agencies were at their finest hour.

The state is indebted to their professionalism and skill. In addition, there was, and still is, the out-pouring of support and resources donated by local citizens and businesses.

There were certainly a few problems with the disaster response. Many criticize the slow deployment of air resources. This was in part due to the high winds.

Also, it was partly due to poor organization and communication.

This was likely the case between the California Fire Department and military air assets. Not all the military aircraft that were available were deployed at first. This slowed the efforts to combat the wild fires.

Overall though, the integrated response of citizens, emergency response agencies, and the military proved very successful.

There was a perfect storm of high winds, dry brush and low humidity, which caused the fires. In response, there was the perfect storm of our unified effort.

ide the Sprinter or risk your safety. This is how it's going to be once the Sprinter starts service next month.

The Sprinter is a light-rail train that will run parallel to Highway 78 from Oceanside to Escondido with a stop in front of Palomar College at Mission Road. San Marcos and Vista have the most vulnerable stops in its 22-mile route, which is dangerously close, if not inches away, from main streets with stoplights.

The problem is the space between the street at the stoplight and where the railroad tracks only allow for a small sedan to safely stop in between the main street and the railroad tracks.

What makes the situation worst is the close proximity of stoplights that will cause the already aggravated traffic problem in North County.

The stop sign in front of Palomar at Mission Road and Las Posas for example has four stoplights in the same street no more than 100 meters apart. On a regular afternoon traffic is extremely backed up, and now with a train passing every 30 minutes both ways (meaning there will be a train passing every 1S minutes in already crowded areas) means chaos. If students begin to ride the Sprinter they will at least avoid the dangerous intersections.

This scenario repeats itself in San Marcos at the Twin Oaks Valley Road and Mission Road stop, except this it is worse. Not even a Mini Cooper can safely stop in between Mission Road and the tracks much less the ever popular "bro" trucks. Most vehicles have to stop behind the tracks, nothing wrong with that, except there is a stoplight a few meters away and a little farther behind lays a freeway exit with exiting cars. Now

hi-product of traffic is road rage. With more traffie to deal with there will be more road rage.

According to testimony at the House of Representatives by University of Hawaii, professor Dr. Leon James said that drivers blame traffic as one of the main reasons for road rage.

The Sprinter stop in Vista gets the worst of the deal. There are too many traffic lights close to each other on Vista Village Drive and Santa Fe Drive and Vista Village and Olive Street. These two intersections have railroad tracks in the middle, all in a SO-meter distance. To make matters worse, Olive Street is home to the Vista Transit Center, that has a bus leaving every five minutes in every direction. It is a very small space that is always blocked by large buses. It's frightening to _think what might happen if those two intersections become blocked.

If a survey done last year by this reporter is any indication of how much students will use the Sprinter, then North County is in a jam. Out of roughly SO people asked whether they will use the Sprinter, only a handful said they would consider it. The only people who said they would use it are the students at the Palomar bus stop people who normally use public transportation and are not causing traffic.

The purpose of the Sprinter is to relieve traffic, not to cause it. If a student rides the Sprinter they will not only reduce traffic but also be safe.

These tracks have not presented any problems in the past because they have not been heavily used on daylight hours.

The best reason to ride the Sprinter is because it's safer than riding a car. Why risk it?

The sprinter is about to begin service.

There is no turning back now. Students have two choices with polarizing outcomes.

College students need to know where to draw the line when it comes to public displays of affection ASHLEY WARD THE TELESCOPE

Walking around campus I'm sure you've seen them, or you may even be one of them --- one of the couples on campus that just can't seem to get enough of each other.

Public displays of affection (or PDA) is a huge problem on the Palomar campus. I'm not talking about a little peck on the lips or holding hands; I'm talking about rated R, "discretion is advised," could almost be classified as free porn type of PDA. It seems to be getting worse with each passing semester. I've seen couples jamming their tongues down one another's throats, a boy putting his hands down his girlfriend's pants and on a few occasions, girls sprawling on top of their boyfriends on the grass, looking like they should be at a Motel 6 instead of a school campus.

Why do students feel it's necessary to be so public about something that should be kept private?

"Well I love him/her and I'm not going to hide that," one might say.

But doesn't a simple hug or a kiss relay the same message without making a scene?

If it's attention they crave they should wear a crazy outfit or dye their hair an unnatural color. It seems to work for everyone else.

Since it's a college campus you would think students would be adult enough to keep their hands to themselves and not

act like they're still in high school, but apparently there's still some growing up to do.

If you're one of these couples you're probably saying to each other, ''Well she's just jealous."

I'm not. I have a boyfriend who I love but I have the decency and civility to realize there is a time and a place for that kind of behavior.

According to the Palomar College Student Conduct Code Condensation students may be disciplined for "disorderly, lewd, indecent, obscene or offensive conduct on college-owned or controlled property or at collegesponsored or supervised functions." Since what these students are doing is considered in many ways lewd and indecent, why is nothing being done about it?

It is obvious that this is becoming a problem, but there hasn't been any changes made.

Are school officials afraid to walk up to these couples and tell them to stop or at least tone it down? There should definitely be some sort of action taken on this ordeal.

I'm not saying we need to ban kissing on campus, but there needs to be a line drawn when enough is enough. No one wants to watch this sort of behavior, although it may be entertaining and funny at times, it's disrespectful and repulsive to say the least.

Next time you see a couple on campus with wandering hands and tongues in each other's mouths, don't be afraid to tell them to "get a room!"

Radio and television club returns, looks for new members After short hiatus, R1V club will offer easy access to equipment MICHELLE CASPOLE THE TELESCOPE

Students involved in the radio and television program on campus have re-established the RTV club.

This semester the club focus is recruiting members to participate in short film making, visiting studios in Los Angeles and other activities organized by the association, said club president Ryan Talmo.

"Any RTV student or enthusiast is welcome," said RTV club secretary Kevin London.

The club is also organizing a trip to UCLA on Nov. 26, London said.

Anyone interested in attending the university can visit the campus with us, he said.

"We will be advertising our events on the student (club council)," said RTV vice-president Trace Rosser. "Also we are looking for people with computer experience to aid in the building of our Web site."

The club has a lot to offer, such as the easy to access cameras, audio and television equipment

for the club members, Talmo said.

'We're trying to change things around," said RTV club president Ryan Talmo.

The meetings will be recorded and broadcasted online. The Website will also feature contact information as well as upcoming scheduled events.

"Online is an excellent resource for our members to track our own organization," Talmo said. "There isn't yet an official Web site but we are in the process of its establishment."

The club is recruiting computer savvy students to help with the new Web site and for club membership. RTV club member, Sal Orozio, said that the RTV club leaders have many great ideas for .club awareness.

"In the weeks to come, a food drive will be held," Orozio said.

"Members of the club will bring at least six cans, as a way, to give back to the college."

It has been years since the club's official beginning but members have brought it back with new ideas and spirits, Talmo said,

adding that Linda Faas, assistant professor for communications, radio and television, wanted to bring the club back.

At the end of the semester, the club hopes to hold a film festival that will feature Palomar student films from the 2007 Fall semester, London said. The club also wants to hold a holiday movie event where people can come see a film for free, similar to the Palomar free film series.

Bake sales and promotional items will also be offered to help finance the club. The money will allow for more projects to be accomplished during the remainder of the semester.

The club meetings are held the first two Thursdays of every month in Q-1 at 2 p.m. The room is right next to the Snack Shack, London said.

During the first couple of club meetings, London said, members will be breaking into smaller groups to shoot very short, unedited films. It's a creative exercise so that RTV club members can become more comfortable with each other as well as network, he said.

Campus TV honors veterans with 'greatest heroes' special SHAHRAZAD ENCINIAS THE TELESCOPE

A group of local heroes from the WWII generation known as the Old Bolt Pilots will be featured in a Palomar College-produced documentary titled "Heroes of the Greatest Generation."

"I enjoyed telling the story of gentlemen who won't be here anymore," said Christin Fisher, director of the documentary. "Directing was fun, but I really enjoyed what the guys had to say."

Palomar history professor Joseph Bagnall approached Pat Hahn, an RTV professor, about a possible filming of the veterans for his history class. Hahn agreed and over the weeks he wanted to do more, he said.

"Why don't we mortalize them and make it right," Hahn said.

The project went from a short filming of the veterans at Denny's to a full on one-hour documentary, Hahn said.

"When the right topic comes along, I tend to jump on it," Hahn said. "The thing these guys did was incredible."

Hahn said their stories need to be told. As soon as Hahn had the "go ahead" he said he informed his classes.

"They jumped at this opportu-

nity," Hahn said. "I didn't see any hesitation at all."

He said his students are always excited to work.

"Students tend to want to learn," Hahn said.

Both his beginning RTV 120 and his advanced RTV 245 worked together. The students received no credit or money for this project but still participated, Hahn said.

"It was phenomenal," Hahn said. Fisher said she was approached by Hahn to become a part of the film and immediately jumped at the opportunity. She said she was "so in it" from the beginning.

"Directing was fun," Fisher said.

"But I really enjoyed what the guys had to say." ¡ She said she has never done anything like the documentary, but would be interested if the opportunity came again because she was able to work at the KOCT studio.

The documentary began filming in late August and took several weeks to put together, Hahn said.

"It was a great experience for the students and ourselves," Hahn said. "I was excited to meet the guys. It's a whole dif-

"I want to do what I can to make the stories public," said 86 year-old WWII veteran Rod Braswell. He voluntarily served from 1942 to 1945.

Braswell wasn't the only one willing to share his story for educational purposes.

"It was fun," said WWII veteran Bud Miller. "It was something I've never been in before."

Miller served in the war from 1943 to 1945. During his time in

"I was interviewed on CNN and it wasn't that good," Miller said. "Palomar was a lot better."

Palomar College technician James McCann found what he was looking for.

In Palomar's recent surplus Internet auction, he bought a cabinet for only $20.

"I used it (a cabinet) for my books and I have already had a compliment on the purchase that I made," McCann said.

Palomar held an Internet auction for two weeks in September to dispose and recycle excess school property ranging from chairs to microscopes to cameras.

The auction was open to students and staff, as well as the general public. The auction ran from Sept. 4 to 17 and was accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing the entire community to participate online.

Palomar will have another surplus Internet auction before the end of the calendar year, said inventory specialist Diane Rabe who organized the auction.

An auction usually takes about two months to organize, and three to four are held each year, she said.

Since Palomar is remodeling and demolishing many of its buildings, many departments are recycling or selling their surplus property.

"Our goal is to recycle the excess property to other departments first and then sell the excess property to maximize excess property value by recovering as much fair market value as possible," Rabe said. "And diverting excess surplus property that would normally go into landfills."

McCann said the auction also brings in a much-needed income for the college "that maybe would have gone in the

recycling bins or the trash."

"I feel that it is our responsibility to reduce cost for the school whenever it does not interfere with the learning environment," McCann said.

Customers bid on various items during the auction and each item is sold ' ' I to the highest bidder. Each item is sold in the condition it's in and the buyer is responsible for taking it.

The money from the auction goes back into the college's general fund.

Rabe said because of the Internet auction, the district was able to use modern technology to simplify the auction process and lower the overall expenses by eliminating the transport to and from the auction site, she said.

The bidding on each item began at $1.

Rabe said a utility cart began at $1 and was eventually sold for $910.

However, a reserve amount of about $100 was set on more expensive items with higher 'demands, such as fume

hoods.

"It gets very competitive in the last half hour," Rabe said.

Other than a few exceptions the auction was easily accessible to the community, Rabe said.

All bidders were required to be at least 18 years old and the district was allowed to remove any items they decided not to auction off.

The Internet auction bids totaled more than $12,000 when it closed. Rabe said. This may not be the final total due to -James McCann some fraud bids, she Palomar College technician said. In the case of fraud, the next highest qualified bidder will receive the item and the total will be recalculated, Rabe said.

Most of the items were sold, however, some items did not sell. Equipment that did not sell was laboratory equipment such as microscopes and chemical bottles, tables, chairs and typewriters.

The ambient sounds in the song are perfectly placed to

dramatize the pace and the content of the lyrics, yet it doesn't sound calculated.

The intensity and humanity of "Videotape" will become a cult classic with the likes of "Creep" and "Karma Police."

"In Rainbows" is the strongest collection of songs all year. Being released in such a revolutionary way is a sweet coincidence. The revolution was luckily started with a proper leader.

Regardless of whether other bands can pull such numbers with no record labels is irrelevant, the message was sent. Other big unsigned bands could follow Radioheads footsteps including Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails.

A standard CD version of "In Rainbows" will be available in Jan. 2008 and a discbox on Dec. 3 of this year.

The discbox will include "In Rainbows" CD form and vinyl as well as a vinyl with eight extra songs along with an art book and lyrics booklet.

Put away appliances you won't need this week. o Make a shopping list in two parts: Things you need right away, and perishables. Include paper goods such as napkins and cups, cleaning supplies, and bags and wraps for leftovers.

Friday o Get out the serving pieces. Match them against your menu and make sure you have a container and serving spoon for every dish. Label the bottoms with tape or Post-it notes. Count glasses, plates and chairs and make a list of anything you need to rent or borrow. o Get out your pots and pans and do a

Tuesday o Sweep the front walk and porch if needed. o Make up drinks, such as iced tea or mulled cider, and refrigerate them. o Make afinal trip to the store for perishables if needed. Pick up a couple of bags of ice if you can store them.

Wednesday

o Set the table and arrange the centerpiece. o Make mashed potatoes. Refrigerate.

Cut and toast the bread for the dressing. o Bake the sweet potatoes, peel and mash, if desired. Cover and refrigerate. o If you're brining the turkey, make the brine. Unwrap the turkey, remove the giblet bag and the neck from the cavities. o Place turkey in brine and keep cold in refrigerator or cooler filled with ice. If you're not brining, check to make sure the turkey is thawed. o Prepare any desserts and refrigerate.

• Wash well, inside and out, with cold running water. • Place in a roasting pan, preferably on a rack.

• Wash your hands with hot, soapy water and dry them with paper towels after handling raw turkey.

College tuition rises, presidential candidates offer little help WAYNE WASHINGTON MCTCAMPUS

Students and their parents can attest to a painful truth about college costs: They've been on a rocket ship rise for years. And there is no end in sight.

Many think college affordability is an issue the candidates for president should address.

Yet few candidates have offered plans to make higher education more affordable.

Still, when pollsters ask which issues are most important, education trails hot-button topics like the war in Iraq, health care and the economy.

When education is discussed, the focus is usually on K-12 issues like testing and vouchers.

Former South Carolina Gov. Dick Riley thinks there should be more talk about higher education.

Despite his rebuke of Clinton's idea, Giuliani has not said what, if anything, he would do to make college more affordable.

While the issue has not been a significant factor in the campaign, students and their parents are troubled by the soaring cost of higher education.

Lauren Johnson, a 20-year-old junior at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., said she has two scholarships, a Pell Grant and a student loan, and she still has a hard time covering all of her costs.

"Each year, tuition goes up," said Johnson, the daughter of a military family that settled in Columbia, S.C. "We're scrambling even more to try to figure out how to pay for this."

College Board figures from 2006-07 show that tuition and fees at four-year public colleges and universities in South

Carolina averaged $7,916 a year.

That figure is 36 percent higher than the national average and 58 percent higher than the Southeastern average.

Frank Holleman, a Greenville, S.C., lawyer who was Riley's chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Education, said too many students and parents decide to postpone or forego college because of costs.

That, he said, is bad for South Carolina, which already does not have enough college-educated adults in its work force.

Census Bureau figures from 2000 show just more than 20 percent of South Carolinians age 25 or older have bachelor's degrees.

Nationally, about 24 percent of people 25 and older have bachelor's degrees.

"The future of this country depends on young people being able to get access to higher education," Holleman said.

De Barros said that the event was nearly canceled due to the week-long closure of the campus because of the wild fires. He said he was happy with the commitment of professors who followed through even after losing class time. He added that all the sessions had great turnouts.

De Barros said that when it comes to the theory of natural selection one of the most common misconceptions is that natural selection can cause an individual to evolve in a lifetime. He said a good example would be a muscle builder. If they had a baby it would not be born with muscles.

De Barros said that important things to remember about natural selection are that natural selection causes a species to evolve through generations -not in a lifetime -- and that it can only choose traits that already exist.

The two-day event at Palomar is dedicated to a dean who passed away from cancer this semester.

Palomar finished with 84 points as Sierra finished with 89.5 points.

Palomar's Louie Desantis (157 pounds), Lewis Gonzalez (165) and

Coast Conference Tournament Nov. 3 held at the San Diego Miramar Aquatics Complex.

Palomar's Bryant Garreton led the Comets with four goals, four steals and an assist. Comets' Zach Flippo and Alex Smith each notched two goals and Zach Schroeder added a goal for Palomar.

Palomar's starting quarterback Hunter Wanket will be out for the remainder of the season after he fractured his collar bone Nov. 3 against Fullerton.

Palomar lost to Fullerton 4717 while Comets back-up quarterback Joey Erickson threw for 211 yards and a touchdown.

Comets' Tobias Shanks finished with seven receptions for 171 yards and Leiyon Myers finished with a touchdown and 110 yards on 12 carries.

Women's basketball under new command with familiar ANTHONY SCHWARTZ THE TELESCOPE

Sherry Titus, last year's women's head coach has stepped down to become interim director of student affairs.

She has switched rolls with her former assistant coach Sherri Jennum.

"We worked really well together," said new head coach Sherri Jennum. "She's no longer in the gym with us and we miss her a ton."

Jennum can't reflect too much on it though because she has big plans for this year's team. Jennum said she has no doubt that this year's Comets can eclipse last year's.

"We have more talent and more potential," Jennum said.

"But that's just it. It's only potential right now."

Returning for the Comets this season is last year's Pacific Coast Conference player of the year, Sabrina Gonzalez.

Co-captains Alison Haleyand Gonzalez said they expect to be the role models for their teammates and know they will be looked at to lead the team.

Last year, the Comets went 21-12 overall, while going 9-3 in the Pacific Coast Conference, earning a bid to the state play-

offs. The 15th ranked Comets went up against 18th ranked Cerritos College. Palomar lost in the first round to Cerritos 6660 and the loss are still feeling the effects of last seasons meltdown, Gonzalez said.

"It was the first round and we're the higher seed," Gonzalez said. "We were pretty

shocked. It was¡ a bummer for the season to end in that way."

Palomar's Audrey Green, a center last season who stands at 6'4", now plays for the Comets women's volleyball team.

Comets' centers Phylicia Templeton and Jenn Wilkinson also did not return for Palomar.

team captain Alison Haley is now the tallest player on the roster at 6'1".

"We lost size," Jennum said.

"I wish we were a little bit bigger and deeper in the post."

The Comets also hope that the new talent can replace talent lost.

"We lost an outstanding guard in Danielle Levasseur.

She's playing up at Minot State and doing quite well."

Levasseur, who was a Pacific Coast Conference AllConference Team Selection last season, averaged 11.6 points a game and 2.5 assists.

"We lost a lot of height, but we're faster," Haley said.

Jennum said that she feels it won't be a big change for the returning players because she was a figure in last season along the side of Titus.

"In the beginning it was rough," Gonzalez said. "But we're coming together. Slowly but surely, we're coming together."

Jennum obviously has high expectations for this season despite it being her first as head coach.

"We want another conference championship," Jennum said.

"It's a game at a time, but I think it will be disappointing for us if we don't wind up with a conference championship."

Jennum is also not going to sell her team short, as she said talent has the ability to take them far.

"We've talked about going to state,' Jennum said. "We've talked about making it to the final eight. Do I think we're capable of it? Yeah, I do."

The Palomar men's basketball team has found success the last two seasons by reaching the playoffs, but the Comets are back to the drawing board this season after losing key contributors at critical positions.

Of the key starters that have moved on are E.J Ross, a two-time first-team All Pacific Coast Conference shooting guard during the 2005-2006 season and 6-foot-7 center Uros Vukovich.

"We have a lot of guys without a whole lot of experience," said Comets men's basketball head coach John O'Neill. "You can't teach experience."

Ross, who averaged 15.4 points a game as a freshman and 13.9 points last season accepted a scholarship to play at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA and Vukovich accepted a scholarship to Harris-Stowe State University of StLouis.

The Comets have lost in the first round of playoffs two seasons in a row. In the 2005-2006 campaign, Palomar finished with a 17-12 and lost by six points against Mt. SAC in the first round of playoffs. Prior to

the playoff defeat, the Comets were riding a 12-game winning streak.

Last season the Comets lost in the first round of playoffs by 18 points to Compton College and finished the season 17-13.

"We still have a sour taste in our mouth," Comets' sophomore guard Chris Holloway said. "We are hoping to come back better and take what is rightfully ours."

Palomar has won four PCC Championships in the last eight years. The Comets had to settle for a share of the PCC title last season and are hoping to rebound with new personnel.

"We have a lot of new guys filling in for the guys we lost," Comets' shooting guard Nedal Tartir said. "We have a lot more speed and our big guys are more agile and we are picking up on things easier."

Comets assistant coach Brad Hollingsworth said Palomar's key returners will be Neiko Robinson, Nedal Tartir Amir Fisher and Holloway.

"Holloway is one of our most explosive players," Hollingsworth said. "Our small-forward, Josh Firmes, is our biggest leaper with a 29-inch vertical leap. Those guys (Holloway and Firmes) give us a

lot of leadership and experience on the floor."

O'Neill said despite the loss of most of last season's starters, they are still a deep team as equally talented new players have joined.

"We have great chemistry and have a lot of team leaders," said O'Neill, who was voted PCC coach of the year two season ago.

Hollingsworth said even though they lost a lot of experience on the floor they still have players who have plenty of knowledge to help newcomers.

"We have a lot of parts at this point of which we can bring in our young guys to learn," Hollingsworth said.

Hollingsworth said of the newcomers, Theo Overstreet and Richard Lafleur are already making a big impact and are looking to be important pieces for the Comets this season.

O'Neill said filling the void at the center position left by Vukovich and Davidson, will be 6foot-7 Cory Leitzke and 6-foot-8 Lafleur.

Getting more minutes at shooting guard will be Tatir O'Neill said.

"We want to get them to compete in practice," said assistant coach Darren Kjeldsen. "To the point where they are so competitive that they are competing against each other."

strong in non-conference play is very important to setting themselves up for PCC play and that they will look to start fast by wearing teams out.

"It is demoralizing to the guys when they are not seeing the results we think we should be seeing when we head into conference play," Kjeldsen said.
