Palomar College received kudos nationally for its graduation success Aug. 14.

According to a survey in the publication Community College Week, out of 1,200 community colleges nationwide, Palomar ranks 82nd in the number of students who graduate with an associate's degree.

Palomar also ranks high ethnically.

The college stands 69th in the nation when it comes to Asian American students graduating with an AA Degree, as well as 76th for Hispanics.

The annual survey also recognized other colleges in the region. San Diego Mesa College ranks 100th in overall students graduating and 33rd in the number of Asian Americans graduating.

Southwestern College received the highest ranking in any survey regionally. The college ranked 11th nationally with Hispanics Americans graduating, and 32nd in the Asian American graduation rate.

The Associated Student Government met Sept. 5, to discuss the following: • Stephanie Loscher was appointed as a new member of the Student Senate.

• The ASG approved $300 to go to the Palomar College Police Department to be used during national campus security month. The money will be implemented to improve campus security awareness.

• Student Senator Paul Barboa raised the issue of heat injury awareness. He claimed it is a problem that is not being adequately addressed.

• In addition, the ASG discussed the upcoming ICC (Inter Club Council) meeting.

Workshops aim to prevent sexual assault Palomar College will be hosting "Sexual Assault Prevention Workshops" sponsored by the Center for Community Solutions and the Women's Resource Center on three different dates in November.

First year business major Michael Sportsman counts cigarette butts he picked up on campus as part of acompetition, "Butt Out," to see who could find the most butts Aug. 29.

Monday, Sept. 24 "One in every four female students will be sexually assaulted within her college career," said Karen L. Boguta, Dispatch and Records Coordinator for the Campus Police Department.

Boguta will be coordinating the workshops with staff from the CCS and the WRC. She said Palomar faculty and administration were instrumental in initiating the first year of the Sexual Assault Prevention Workshops here at Palomar.

"The whole idea of the workshops is to try to keep anyone from becoming a victim and what we can do to educate," Boguta said.

She said students attending college for their first time are in a new environment that is not structured. They are not aware of their surroundings.

People are on their cell phones a lot and might not be aware there is someone lurking behind a tree.

She also said these workshops will

shock and teach students how to be aware of their surroundings. The workshops will also provide resources available to victims.

The "Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Week Workshops" will be held in classrooms SU18 at 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 27; classroom BES at 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 28; and classroom SU18 at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Nov. 30.

"It is an hour that can change your life," Boguta said. "Knowledge is power. Be safe, be aware, and know what resources are available to you."

There will be a raffle with prizes after the workshops.

Sprinter gears for year-end takeoff

If you thought you saw the Coaster passing by Palomar Campus Sept. 6-7, you were mistaken. It was the new Sprinter rail line that is on track to start running daily in mid-December, said Tom Kelleher, the transit direct spokesman.

Transit officials tested the Sprinter from areas east of the San Marcos Civic Center to San Marcos Boulevard, Pico Avenue, Knoll Road, and now Las Posas Ave. The Sprinter will run 22 miles along Highway 78 starting in Escondido and ending at the Oceanside Transit Center station, where passengers can hop on the Coaster or the Breeze.

The Sprinter will give students, faculty and staff an additional transportation option and should cut back on traffic getting in and out of the campus.

"I can't wait for the Sprinter to start running," said Palomar student Brooke Gualtieri. "It will be excellent for students because we won't have to get stuck in traffic for 30 minutes trying to find a parking spot on campus anymore.

Hopefully, it will cut down on student drivers."

The parking lots at Palomar College's main campus are crammed, the walkways are swarming with thousands of students scurrying to their classes and campus officials are experiencing the effect of the rise in enrollment.

Students enrolled in semesterlength credit and non credit classes at Palomar have increased 2.7 percent (27,298 students) from the 2006 fall semester (26,573 students).

As of Sept. 5, the number of credit students also rose to 2.56 percent (24,916 students) from last fall.

"It looks like everyone in the state of California is up in enrollment right now," said Director of Enrollment Services Herman Lee. "So it's not only localized at Palomar."

The enrollment numbers at the college have increased steadily the last two years. In 2005, a total of 24,107 students were taking semester-length credit classes, while there were 24,295 students in the fall of 2006.

Student government protests proposed grade-change policy SHAHRAZAD ENCINIAS Ul

An ongoing debate between student and faculty leaders about the way students challenge grades is heating up.

After Faculty Senate members presented proposed changes to the grade dispute policy at the Sept. 5 Associated Student · Government meeting, student leaders said the process is "very very lengthy" and that they don't agree with the lack of student representation since the proposed policy removes the Student Affairs Office from the process.

"The student has no protection," ASG President Michelle

Eichelberger said. "What is the student supposed to do?"

"Your concern cuts right into the heart of our professionalism," said Faculty Senate President Brent Gowen, who also said faculty senate members - who would take full control of grade changes - are professional and will not be biased toward the final say. He also said they "take grades so seriously."

ASG is worried that faculty will side with the professor instead of the student.

"Our job is to serve the students," said Faculty Senate member Jenny Fererro.

The reason for the update is because the former policies and procedures were different from

other schools, Fererro said.

Gowen and Fererro explained that the updated document was derived from student grievances and other policies from other schools.

"We're making sure everyone is well represented," Fererro said.

ASG Senator Paul Barboa said the "problem is not having a student perspective."

Grades can be changed at Palomar in two ways - informally and formally.

"The vast majority of student grade change are fixed through the informal," Fererro said.

'Professionalism' means no students? s a result of Director of Student Affairs Bruce Bishop's resignation in August, questions have been raised regarding the lack of student representation in the grade dispute process.

Issues regarding a lack of student protection were raised at the Associated Student Government meeting Sept. 5 by ASG President Michelle Eichelberger and were quickly shot down by Faculty Senate President Brent Gowen, who said her accusations "cut right into the heart of our professionalism," and that faculty senate members would "not be biased toward the final say in grade changes."

Here's a few questions for the Faculty Senate: How can we not question your professionalism? Was it not Bishop who was under fire last year for wrongly changing grades?

On last review, Bishop is a member of the faculty - not a student.

Why change an entire policy based on the accusations of a person who is no longer a part of the equation? What's more, why eliminate all student advocacy?

If the Faculty Senate was as professional as it claimed to be, wouldn't it be for a well-balanced process?

Maybe the whole idea of checks and balances is a little ridiculous - at least it appears that's what Gowen believes.

It could be that the faculty just doesn't want to hear the students out.

Jenny Fererro, another Faculty Senate member, claimed at the meeting that "we're making sure everyone is well represented."

How is everyone well represented when only faculty members and administrators have a say in grade disputes? Under the Faculty Senate's proposal, students get about as fair a hearing as Rodney King. · Palomar College, and all California community colleges, are supposed to operate under shared governance - meaning everyone gets a seat at the table. A student sits as a member of the college's governing board and on the college's most important committees.

We have to wonder why faculty leaders are afraid to bring that same spirit of collegiality into the grade dispute procedure.

It could be that this is an attempt by the faculty to make the process more time efficient. By running the issue past fewer people, we get quicker results. It works for Communist Cuba, why not Palomar College?

The faculty's desire to keep the process as professional as possible is understandable, but students must be confident that their voices are being heard. When it is a student's grade that is in jeopardy, you cannot take the student out of the process.

So, thank you, Faculty Senate. Now that we as students don't have to worry about something as simple as the debate over our grades, we have more time to focus on other things - like our homework and the hours dedicated toward studying for tests to earn those "fair" grades.

The point here isn't to re-highlight the allegations made against Bishop, we all are aware of that issue. It is however, to call attention to the faculty and demand that they place responsibility where it belongs. Don't punish students for supposed mistakes made by administrators by giving them no voice in the process.

How's that for professional?

I am not a health nut. As long as what I am eating or drinking is considered "safe," I am all for it. But when I heard that San Diego County is going to start fluoridating the water supply in early October, I started to question the idea.

Fluoride is added to water because it is thought to prevent tooth decay. Calcium fluoride from the natural runoff of the earth's minerals was recognized as the cause of better dental health in children. It neutralizes the acidity around the teeth, preventing cavities.

I would have no problem if the San Diego County Water Authority would be using this chemical -it is naturally occurring in most water. But instead, the chemical being added is something called fluorosilicic acid. It is obtained from fertilizer production plants, where it is scraped off the walls of the production areas, and other elements that come with the fertilizer processing, such as lead, arsenic and even uranium, come with it. The fluorosilicic acid itself is not a naturally occurring chemical, and has effects on the body that include brittleness in the bones, extensively higher levels of lead in the blood, neurological diseases and even bone cancer.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Web site cautions on the fact sheet for fluorosilicic acid: "AVOID ALL EXPOSURE!" If a reputable source says to "avoid exposure" to a toxic chemical, and it's going to be put into our water, we should all be -concerned.

Richard According to Sauerheber, a medical research scientist who has done a great deal of research on the subject of fluoridation, the fluorosilicic acid would enter the blood stream, being absorbed into the body the root cause of the many diseases I mentioned. Harmless calcium fluoride, however, does not absorb into the body due to its chemical makeup.

If there are so many adverse reactions to fluorosilicic acid, why does the water authority use it when there is a completely safe and effective alternative? It happens that the fertilizer industry that produce the fluoride byproducts will gain huge profits.

Fluorosilicic acid is actually classified as hazardous waste, and is very expensive to dispose of. By selling it to the government, the waste is eliminated (it is then classified as a "product"), and fertilizer companies receive compensation. So basically, our health is being put at high risk for economical incentives between corporations and the government.

Many people aren't even aware this is going to happen. One Palomar student, Kevin Church, immediately pulled out his laptop and started to explore the subject when asked about it. As he read the effects fluorosilicic acid has on the human body, he stated, "You can't just administer this type of thing to people. It's just wrong ... people should have a choice."

Another student, Emad Elias, fought back with the argument, "They're trying to help people who can't afford oral care. All the people who are trying to vote it off drink bottled water. Most people who don't drink bottled water can't afford oral care."

But what about people who don't know the difference? I didn't know that fluorosilicic acid caused so many adverse health effects until I researched it.

People who think the tap water is safe, like I did, would be at risk without even knowing it.

Fluorosilicic acid will be pumped into the water of all San Diego County starting early October. I hope that with the efforts of a concerned society, it will be stopped. We can't let our government fall into corruption and put our citizens' lives at risk - if our government is "by the people, for the people" then we, as the people, should stand up and end what is harmful and unethical.

I am glad to see The Telescope making some changes! I have heard many comments that the paper was boring or needed a facelift, and when I picked up this first issue I was completely surprised! Doing good so far guys!

Glad to see director go Comment on our Aug. 20 story about Student Affairs Director Bruce Bishop's resignation.

I had a personal run-in with Mr. Bruce Bishop back in 1999. I was accused of something on campus that I did not do and Mr. Bishop was trying to coerce me into confessing to something I did not do. I was seriously emotionally damaged by the things Mr. Bishop said to me. I believe that most of the time, he had the students' best interests in mind, but he always had his own agenda also.

I had nightmares about what Mr. Bishop said to me for two to three years after the incident.

I personally am very happy to see him resign his position as director of student affairs, which is a title he made for himself.

-John It was so funny. Blazing heat and THEN the power goes out. Most classes were canceled, but mine was taken outside. The cafeteria was taking orders in the dark. No credit cards for thirsty debt-yielding bodies. No air conditioning. People going around complaining that they didn't know if their class was cancelled, and they didn't want to wait for two hours. It was chaos. It will be one for the record books.

And I loved every minute of it!

ith so many issues in society, it is nice to know that the government is focusing on the one true evil - smoking.

On Aug. 14, the El Cajon City Council gave final approval to an item on their agenda prohibiting the sale of "Novelty Lighters."

Such a thing is enough to make one wonder why these people were elected into office.

The City Council wasn't done, though, as the next item was a ban on smoking in public areas, which passed unanimously.

According to the new law, while you can still smoke at your house or in your yard and what they are calling "smokers' outposts," you cannot smoke at parks, bars, restaurants, places of business or basically anywhere someone can complain.

"Smokers' outposts?"

Here's an idea. How about designating smoke-free outposts for all people afraid of secondhand smoke. There you can pick up your swastika.

Though City Council members say there will be a 6-month grace period, failure to abide by the new ordinance will result in a $500 citation.

Didn't George Orwell write books about this type of thing? In an effort to make a utopian society, people are elected into office by others they are supposed to represent, only to abuse the power with frivolous matters.

Smoking is an inalienable right that cannot be given by one human being to another.

This country was built upon the idea that people couldn't be controlled by a person with a warped idea of reality.

Nowhere does it say that we are guaranteed liberty as long as it's not at or within 20 feet of a restaurant or business.

Hypothetically, a gentleman drives to El Cajon for an event. When he arrives back to where his car is parked, he finds that someone has stolen it.

While filing a report for the police, the gentleman lights a cigarette to calm his nerves. The officer then gives him a citation for $500 and says, "Sorry sir, this is El Cajon, you can't smoke here."

Palomar students should watch out.

outposts" and an all-out ban on students lighting up.

There is no reason to argue the health concerns with cigarette smoke. The surgeon general puts a warning on cigarettes saying they can cause lung cancer, heart disease and emphysema and may complicate pregnancy - just a disclaimer that doesn't deny the legality.

Smoking has inarguable health concerns and over a period of time can kill a person. Same can be said, though, of alcohol use, eating only Big Macs over a span of 30 days and swimming in Mission Bay. In an effort to better people while denying their rights, keep a look out for a law regulating fast food consumption in the near future.

Tobacco is more of a social drug than anything. People can always be seen congregating in a group smoking cigarettes and talking about everything under the sun. There are more pressing matters that leaders should be focusing on other than smoking, such as gang violence, homicide and sightings of Michael Moore. Assuming the El Cajon City Council approved the law fully for concern for the survival of the people, it would make more sense to crack down on the most fatal issues.

Smokers don't get any slack from people in the community, forcing a cough while shooting daggers at those wicked tobacco consumers. While smokers go to the polls to vote for people to protect their rights, their representatives cast smokers away as soon as elected like a $2 whore.

Deegan said that the power company informed him that electricity could be up and running again for evening classes at 5 p.m.

However, until that time, all power on campus would need to be drastically reduced.

"There would be some electricity, but we couldn't operate the whole campus," Deegan said. "So the decision was made to close the campus until 5 p.m. I stayed until after 7 p.m. to make sure the transition went smoothly. At 10 p.m., SDG&E came back with the new transformer. They installed that between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Soon after the outage, the Palomar Police Department began alerting all students on campus that afternoon classes would be cancelled. Yet, an alert of the college's closure was not posted on the Palomar's main Web site until approximately 5 p.m. and the phone lines and the Website's server remained down until4 p.m.

"You can see communication is always the biggest issue," Deegan said. "We have to find a way to be able to relay information to students."

Power goes out and (stuff) hap· pens. When the power goes out, the only thing you can do is call SDG&E." The campus reopened at 5 p.m., but there was not air conditioning in every room and it was at the discretion of the faculty whether to hold classes, Deegan said.

He added that a debriefing meeting with the college's vice presidents will take place some· time in the next couple of weeks.

At that time, the college will examine how to improve notifying students and what actions to take if a similar situation occurs on campus.

"The transformer that was there had the capacity to handle the electricity that was needed, but it was probably a little too close," Deegan said. "As I understand, with the addition of the Natural Sciences Building, that transformer should have been replaced to one with more capacity."

The blackout followed SDG&E declaring a power emergency for all of North County after the increasing heat levels in the past week.

"I think by and large, students were very understanding and accommodating as well as the faculty and the staff," Deegan said.

"Historically, when you drop the enrollment fee, enrollment goes up," Lee said. "I think it is a factor throughout the state of California. A lot of colleges are offering more classes.

Another primary factor for the increase can be attributed to the completion of the new Natural Sciences Building, Deegan said.

"By bringing on the new Natural Sciences building, it has allowed us to increase the number of rooms and to use the rooms they have vacated," Deegan said. "So we have added about a 130 extra sections."

In a given year, Deegan said that Palomar will offer approximately 7,000 class sections.

"By bringing on the new building, students are able to take more classes at the times

that they want," Deegan said.

"Now people can say whatever they want about scheduling, but by and large at Palomar College, students primarily want to take their classes during the day. They will go to evening (classes) if forced to do so. But if they can get it in the day and take their classes over four or five days, that's preferable."

Despite increases in advertisements for Palomar, Lee said that the college's media campaign did not grow this year.

"We really didn't increase our advertising that much," Lee said. "I don't know what the other community college's have done, but we did not do a media campaign more than we have done before."

Deegan added that a pivotal vote will occur next December, where voters will decide on a Community College initiative that could decrease tuition fees from $20 to $15.

The two-night festivity will celebrate the lOth anniversary of the Palomar College world dance and the Afroprogram Cuban/Brazilian Drum and dance ensemble "Agogo" in Studio 02 (located across from the tennis courts).

"It's a way to thank students and faculty that have helped to the success of the program," said Patriceann Mead, Palomar College dance professor as well as founder and director of the world dance program.

Much like his past solo efforts, Ear Drum is nothing short of guest spots. "Soon the New Day," featuring soulful vocalist Norah Jones, has Kweli exhibiting his mature respect for women.

Yet, when Kweli brings a guest on board just for the sake of it, he stumbles. On "The Nature," surprisingly, pop-tart Justin Timberlake joins the emcee to sing a dull chorus, yet Kweli saves the song by delivering his accustomed poignant lyrics.

On the standout "Country Cousins," Kweli strings his impeccable flow, effortlessly alongside southern rap duo UGK, as they bridge the gap between New York and Southern hip hop.

However, "The Perfect Beat," with the legendary KRS-One is far from ideal. The lyrics are on point, but the below average beat is somewhat of a head scratcher.

The socially conscious "Give 'Em Hell" has Kweli tackling religion and the way we view the world around us with "If we all God's children then what's the word of the reverend worth?

But where it excels in thoughtprovoking wordplay, it falters in a mediocre chorus.

With Ear Drum's release date having been pushed back countless times, certain tracks such as the album's first single "Listen!!!" and the Hi-Tek produced "More or Less," have been floating around the internet for what seems like forever- in the process they have lost their mystic.

At 20 tracks, Ear Drum could

have easily been condensed to a manageable 13 songs. Although extensive at some points, this is by far Kweli's strongest solo effort to date.

He delivers what we expect from him- extraordinary lyricism and genuine authenticity.

He has undoubtedly found comfort with the music he is creating and is apparently done listening to his critics. Nonetheless, his latest effort is definitely music to the ears.

Palomar College's Boehm Gallery is currendy hosting an exhibit called "Rituals," featuring artwork of Native American dance and other aspects of Native American life.

"The recent remodel of the gallery has offered a relaxing space for the tone of the artwork," said Boehm Gallery Director Joanna Bigfeather.

Bigfeather, a descendent of the Apache tribe herself and hailing from New Mexico, has been the director since January and an instructor of American Indian studies for the past two years.

"People have misconceptions about what Native American artists create, they think we only do traditional work like baskets or jewelry making," Bigfeather said. "[Artist] Gerald Clarke has combined the art he's used, the image of the basket mixed with new technology, to display and send a message."

Brighdy colored walls compliment the rich shades of burnt orange which frame the paintings and detailed jewelry on loan compliments of Arthur G. Peinado. that Peinado believes American Indian fine art is generally underappreciated, he said.

"Hopefully this exhibition will promote a greater understanding and appreciation for this truly important American fine art," Peinado said.

"I had met the Peinados many years ago, I was excited to offer them the chance to show in the exhibit," Bigfeather said.

The Boehm Gallery's latest exhibit titled 'Rituals' features Native American artwork and jewelry. It will be on display through Oct.l3.

The theme, "Rituals," means performance of formal acts, the observance of actions or procedures in a set, ordered and ceremonial way.

Tribal rhythms are played in the background accompanied with light bird song and ratdes.

While viewing the installation, the songs and chants change and echo throughout the two and a half rooms.

"CDs, !pods, ratdes and ceremonial bands hang from the ceiling above a large coiled California basket design symbolizing the union of contemporary and tradi-

tional art and how they co-exist in peace," Bigfeather said. "You become apart of the piece when you walk into the room, the sound surrounds you," The second installation features a spinning light show displayed on the wall in the back of the room. Pictures, such as a woman performing the task of basket making or a camp fire burning and other Native American rituals are shown as the basket spins.

Artists in the Peinado collection include tribes from the Southwest such as Hopi, Pueblo, Apache and Navajo. The paintings are a lifetime of work, some dating back to the 1950s, some earlier.

Finely crafted silver jewelry is complimented by turquoise other stones holding true to the Native American technique of jewelry design.

The two installations are displayed to the right of the gallery and the opposite side offers the ritual-styled art in mosdy watercolors and acrylics.

Bigfeather was excited to use

Clarke's contemporary artwork.

"It would work really well in this gallery space. We spent the whole summer redoing the gallery, these colors were selected especially for this exhibit. You feel kind of a warmth when you enter that space," Bigfeather said. "Through technology the heritage and technique of learning these native rituals is having an impact and sort of revival among the youth."

Pieces by Lewis Numkena, Neil David, Phil Hughte, and Pablita Velarde, with many others, are aligned along the wall.

"The gallery has had many visitors since its opening and through the powerful art conveying a message of heritage and sacred American Indian history students can experience first-hand each pieces detail and origin," Bigfeather said.

Station project. It would bring 48,980 square feet of retail space, 9,800 square feet of offices, 8,280 square feet of restaurants and 333 condos to 14-acres of vacant land one block south of Palomar on both sides of Armorlite Drive near Las Posas Road.

The San Marcos City Council recently approved the project by a vote of 4-1.

"I voted against it because I felt that putting people in an industrial area is bad planning," said San Marcos City Councilman Mike Preston.

Although the City Council approved the project, many of the small-business owners are not happy.

On behalf of the San Marcos Business and Industrial Association, Escondido attorney Everett Delano, filed a lawsuit Aug. 29 seeking to block construction due to what they say is the city's lack of adequately studying the possible health risks to future residents and the public.

The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order or injunction, prohibiting the city from allowing the developer to proceed until more studies are done to see what the health risks could be.

Despite the legal troubles, the Sprinter's unveiling remains unchanged.

"The Sprinter planned start up date is still mid-December," Kelleher said. "The contractor still has major milestones to achieve involving the completion of stations in the corridor and installing new signal systems.

"The Sprinter operations contractor will still need to completely test the vehicles through the corridor to receive permission from the California Public Utilities Commission to open for passenger service," he said.

Students, professors heated over Pavilion closure Cafe was gathering place for art and performing arts RIGO HERNANDEZ ' IE ¡01'

Despite students' and professors' discontent, the Pavilion Cafe served food and drinks for the last time May 10 and will not reopen this semester.

The cafe was located in the D building, east of the Howard Brubeck Theatre, in an area surrounded by art and performing arts classes.

Palomar food service provider, ARAMARK, did not respond to questions about the closing.

"It is a disregard to the arts, the performing arts and art buildings that are there," said art professor Kitty Meek. "To take that away from us is silly."

Meek added: "Now we don't have a lunch, and there is only 10 minutes between classes from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Then again from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those are three-hour classes. Now we have nowhere to go."

The cafe closing left many asking why.

"How can they close something that served so many?" asked art professor Doug Durrant. "Should we not have a place to go?"

Durrant, Meek and students agreed that it was unrealistic for art students who have back-to-back classes to go to the main cafeteria.

Some of the students who have classes around the area felt affected by the closing, while others were not even aware of the cafe's existence.

"It's like a slap in the face to the music department and both faculty and students," said music major Charles Welty. "It was a good networking area for art students and music students. They've taken

out an aspect of the community."

Students wanting the cafe to re-open are not just complaining, they are doing something about it. Numerous students have approached Associated Student Government member and Food and Service Committee member, Tanisha DelaTorre, to bring up the Pavilion closing to ARAMARK in the next committee meeting.

Student and professors have different

beliefs as to why the cafe closed. Physics major Zach Tomke said it was shut down because of its early closing hours.

Another belief among students and professors is that ARAMARK wasn't making enough profit.

"A college should be for learning, not for profit," Meek said. "If they closed it every other day, of course they are not going to make any profit."

Some students were not surprised to see it close. Palomar student Robert Warner said he didn't even know it existed and would have liked to go if he knew about it.

The loss of the cafe will affect the college as a whole, Durrant said. Durrant wondered where performing arts and gallery visitors will get their refreshments and snacks.

Palomar College began hosting the first "National Campus Safety Awareness Month" on Sept. 10.

Campus police, the San Marcos Fire Department, and members of the Community Emergency Response Team are participating in the event.

It's a month-long event to educate students, staff and the community on crime prevention, emergency preparedness, health, substance abuse and sexual assault, said Karen L. Boguta, dispatch and records coordinator for the Campus Police Department.

Every week has a different

theme stressing awareness.

Palomar College, with funding from the U.S. Department of Education, is conducting the "National Campus Safety Awareness Campaign" and a special "Sexual Assault Prevention Workshop" m November.

"Security at Palomar is good," Boguta said. "We haven't had any rapes or shooters on campus.

We have had our share of drug situations, car break-ins and a few fights now and then, but we have been very fortunate."

She said students have to be prepared if something bad does happen.

It takes everyone, including staff and campus police, working together in order to have a safe

campus, Boguta added.

"It takes a community with experienced skills," she said.

Boguta said she wants students to know that if someone doesn't feel comfortable walking to their car they can call You campus police and be escorted.

"Emergency prevention is a what it is all about," said John Scofield, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member. "You can help yourself so that you don't become a victim.

If there is a real disaster and you call 911, nothing is going to happen for a long, long time. So you better be prepared to take care of yourself. This is what we are encouraging."

Mitch Smith explained that the department responds to Palomar emergencies ab9ut twice a week, he said.

"Most emergencies are minor, such as bee stings or diabetic related. All our crews are p trained as paramedics," Smith said.

San Marcos Public Service Specialists -John Scofield Bebe Nares and Ronie CERT member Martinez have provided information and resources on personal safety and prevention training and classes to students.

Martinez said vehicle burglaries have increased and they are advising students not to leave their valuables in plain sight.

CERT has provided information on emergencies and disaster preparedness.

The CERT program educates people about disaster preparation for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations.

Because California has earthquakes and flooding, they are encouraging the community to prepare its own 72-hour emergency kit, Scofield said ..

"Do you have sanitation supplies, medical supplies, flashlight and a radio so you know what's going on?" Scofield said.

CERT classes are being offered by the San Marcos Fire Department for free in January.

Mashing: Astonishingly, drying sprouted 2 grain at temperatures high enough to destroy its life force does not destroy its ability to produce momentous chemical activity.

Bringing the "mash" to between 148 and 158 degrees activates a pair of related enzymes that liquefy and reduce the now-soluble starches into maltose and other simple sugars.

lautering: Once all reducible starches have been converted, the mash is heated again to 17{) degrees. The liquid is drawn off through a filter bed of the remaining husks of the original grain. The husks are then rinsed ("lautered") thoroughly with more hot water.

Runoff from the mash is "wort:' and it constitutes what will become the finished beer.

The cold break: As soon as the boil is com5 plete, the wort is quickly cooled. This precipitates even more undesirable proteins and tannins out of the wort. This time the process is called the "cold break;' and the residue is called "cold trub:' Pitching the yeast: Perhaps the most important key to making good beer is to 6 keep wild yeast and bacteria from gaining a foothold in your brew before the preferred yeast does. This is done through good sanitation and proper "pitching" of a sufficient quantity of carefully cultivated beer yeast. When the wort is cooled, a thick broth of cultivated yeast is added.

A. The lag phase: The yeast immediately begins to absorb oxygen. Enzymes facilitate yeast's intake of glucose, more complex sugars and other nutrients. This happens in a few hours.

B. The respiration and fermentation phases: Wrth suffiCient food reserves stored away, the yeast begins to reproduce by "budding:' It absorbs all the remaining oxygen in the wort and uses it and other nutrients to produce new "daughter" cells. Once all oxygen is absorbed, reproduction halts and fermentation proper begins. In a simplified explanation, yeast turns one molecule of glucose into two molecules each of ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide.

C. Clarifying and carbonation: Once all available fermentable sugars are consumed, fermentation grinds to a halt and the yeast begins to go dormant. The beer is clarified by storing in a cool, still, sterile environment. It is now nearly free of clouding agents and is clear. It is also flat. During the whole fermentation process, the huge amount of carbon dioxide produced has been allowed to escape through a gas vent, while the alcohol has been preserved in an otherwise closed environment. To achieve carbonation, brewers inject carbon dioxide to the desired level.

ost people know that it takes yeast to make beer, and some people know a little bit about how it performs that miracle. But probably few people besides brewers and biochemists are familiar with the intricate series of seemingly unrelated chemical reactions that must occur in a particular order - from long before the yeast does its magic- to turn ordinary grain and water into the delicious and mildly alcoholic carbonated concoction so many of us enjoy.

Here is a step-by-step primer on the natural science of brewing. You might wish to pop open a tall, cool, smooth one to further appreciate the marvelous result of the art we have made of that . science.

The boil: Achieving clear beer with a firm, foamy head is largely a function of remov4ing most - but not quite all- proteins from the original mash. Proteins, when boiled, will coagulate and settle out of the liquid, forming a gummy mass called "trub:' This action is called the "hot break." Boiling is also necessary to extract important flavoring agents, called alpha acids, from hops. Up to a point, the longer the wort is boiled, the more efficiently a given amount of hops can bitter a quantity of beer. Boiling even longer can produce caramelization of sugars in the wort.

Sip on this: tasty beer facts • Beer was brewed from barley at least 7,000 years ago. But only lately have we discovered that barley, among all grains, is so rich in enzymes that it can convert to sugars not only its own starches but up to its own weight in additional starches. This is grandly referred to as "diastatic power" and accounts for the ability of large brewers to brew beer from up to 50 percent com (Miller, et al.) or rice (Budweiser).

Those grains do not contain, on their own, the necessary enzymes to convert starches to cleanly fermentable sugars.

They need help. Barley provides.

• In ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, laborers were paid in beer. Gigantic bakeries produced huge quantities of bread, which was not distributed.

Rather, the loaves of bread were dissolved in water and turned into beer.

• We like to think that the brewing art and science have been perfected only recently, but even in ancient times, certain brewers were recognized for

their talents. Many of them had hereditary status. Their secret: They used wooden bowls and spoons handed down through generations. The secret of that: Yeast cells are very hardy and can survive dormancy in many extreme conditions and habitats. One that they are especially well adapted to is the grain of wood. The spoons and bowls of ancient brewers harbored unique strains of good brewing yeast that were reconstituted with every use.

• The Pilgrims were aiming for Virginia but got off course. When they landed in the uninviting region of New England,'they begged the crew of the Mayflower to take them south. The crew demurred. They were running out of beer. They left the Pilgrims to their fate, and half died before they man· aged to establish a sufficient brewing regimen, mostly from pumpkins. The lesson: Don't drink the water. No known disease pathogen can survive in even weak beer.

Despite being new to the team, Green is clicking with her teammates.

"We get along very well," Green said of Parks. "The team just meshes."

Naturally, Seiler is happy with the win but said he knows improvement is needed.

COMET SPORTS IN BRIEF Men's soccer off to rough start to open season The Palomar men's soccer team faced more than just high temperatures Sept. 4, as the Orange Coast Pirates brought the heat in a 3-1 victory over the Comets.

Palomar's midfielder, Neal Keith, brought the game to a brief tie in the first half off an assist from defender Jose Aquino. Shortly after, Pirates' forward Jarred Balbus scored what would end up to be the game-winning goal at the end of the first half.

"Our only problem is team cohesiveness;· Keith said. "We don't play as a team. It is like one man versus everyone else."

Team unity aside, Palomar head coach Carlos Hernandez saw other areas in which his team could use improvement.

"They were a very physical team;· Hernandez said. "They weren't dirty, they were just a very physical team.

"At the end of the day they need to put the ball at the back of the net and

Palomar got on the scoreboard first with the help of a 46-yard reception by Myers from quarterback Hunter Wanket. A 1-yard touchdown scamper by running back Donnell Fulford capped off the Comets' first drive.

Grossmont answered with an eight-play, 61-yard drive ending with a 15-yard run by running back Chris Daniels.

On the ensuing kick-off return, Comets' wide receiver John Roberson fumbled at the 4-yard line, setting up Grossmont for an easy touchdown run to take the lead.

With 1 minute, 2 seconds left in the second quarter, Palomar's defense stepped up and denied Grossmont the end zone, preserving a 28-21lead. The Griffins failed to score after they had four chances to reach the end zone from inside the 10-yard line - two plays of which were from the oneyard line.

Palomar opened the second half by capitalizing on a Simon Milo fumble recovery at the 30-yard line with a 23-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Richie Martin.

Palomar's offense continued to dominate Grossmont's defense, as the Comets pUJ.lted once the whole game.

"I have never seen Donnell (Fulford) and Leiyon (Myers) run that hard. That was amazing," Wanket said. "The offensive line stepped up very big and if they jelled like that right now, we are going to be great."

The Comets' secondary struggled, as Grossmont's quarterback Blake Sutton finished with 381 yards and three touchdowns on 33 completions. Palomar head coach Joe Early said they must address the defensive side of the ball.

The Comets set a school rushing record with 475 total yards on the ground and 707 total yards of offense against Grossmont College. Myers' rushing performance ranked third in Palomar history.

While the defense struggled, the Comets' ground game excelled.

Grossmont could not get a grip on Palomar's ground game, as Myers finished with the three touchdowns and Fulford with 120 yards on 20 carries.

"Leiyon has all the potential in the world and the good thing about him is that he is a freshman," Early said. "He and Donnell (Fulford) had a great day."

Wanket continued his success finishing with 230 yards on 13-of19 passing and 80 yards rushing.

"He has really come of age. That makes it tough on a defense" Early said. "Most defenses don't account for quarterbacks, and when he can do the things that he was able to do today, it forces a defense to be honest."

Palomar kept the momentum in the second half and built up a three-touchdown lead in the forth quarter. Grossmont attempted to make a comeback as they cut the lead down to seven points with 10:08 to go in the fourth quarter.

The Comets however, quickly quieted the Grossmont crowd on three plays for 80 yards and took over momentum with a 38-yard touchdown run by Myers to make it 49-35.
