CAMPUS CALENDAR

The Palomar College Radio and Television department is offering a new class this semester that will take students back in time to relive six decades of prime time television.

The course, RTV 101 "History of Prime Time TV," will consist of students watching and studying classic television shows that date from the 1950s to the present. The class will focus on each show's impact on America, along with the topics of how each show borrowed ideas, the key to a TV hit, Neilson ratings, TV formulas and much more.

The class size is limited, but those interested can enroll under the class number 74743 or contact Palomar College Associate Professor Pat Hahn at (760) 744-1150, ext. 2964. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. in room ES-20.

Director • resigns post Director of Student Affairs steps down after grade-change scandal SHAHRAZAD ENCINIAS THE TELESCOPE

The Director of Student Affairs resigned after eight years on the job on Aug. 17; three days before an investigation will resume on charges he changed students grades.

Bruce Bishop, who has been at Palomar since 1978 and has held the position of Director of Student Affairs since ·1999, stepped down and will return to the classroom.

It is unclear when Bishop officially resigned, but Associated Student Government president Michelle Eichelberger made an announcement at the Governing Board meeting on Aug. 14. Bishop was not at the meeting.

"I absolutely loved this job," Bishop said the next day.

Bishop said his resignation had nothing to do with the grade changes and said a series of events have led him to this decision.

"There's not one specific thing or event," Bishop said. "I'm certain there are things I could have done differently, but there's nothing I regret doing."

Earlier this year Bishop was accused of changing students' grades in a foreign language class without the teacher's authorization. Bishop said he has e-mails that prove he was authorized to do

The monitors are also hydraulic and can be lowered to offer students flat table space to be used in the lab.

It has been nearly two-and-a-half years since San Diego based C.E. Wylie Construction first broke ground on the Natural Sciences building. After much anticipation, Palomar College is finally set to introduce its first new academic building since the 1970s.

"It will be more of a relief when we actually have students in here," said Candice Francis, professor of biology.

The Natural Sciences building, a three-story, 107,000-square-foot configuration, will be open for students Aug. 20. The structure is TURN TO DIRECTOR PAGE 9 decorated in a tan stucco exterior

with white trim, displaying a hightech, industrial look. The building dons six lecture halls, eight classrooms, 20 laboratories, 70 offices with space for adjunct faculty, three functional elevators and a greenhouse.

"For me, 33 months ago while I was out here jack-hammering rock, this is really nice to see," said Chris Miller, Palomar's supervisor of construction activities. "It has been a challenging project, because this building is just like building a hospital. It has all of the same components."

Despite the Natural Sciences building being opened for classes, Miller said, "It looks a lot better

on the inside, than it does on the outside," and there are still minor details that must be competed.

"There are still some things to work on that I would say are more aesthetic than anything else," Miller said. "There are a lot of little touch up things you will see in the building that we may not get to by the first day of school, (such as) broken ceilings or a scuff on the wall. We'll be doing 'punchlist work,' which is a big list of minor details."

The building will hold four departments in life sciences, chemistry, physics and engineering and earth, space and aviation sciences. The departments were

moved from the ES, LS and CH buildings.

"Currently (the old science buildings) are being used for swing space for dental assisting and English writing labs," said Kelley Hudson-Mac Isaac, Palomar's director of facilities planning. "A year from now, those old buildings will be demolished and we will start construction on the new multidisciplinary instructional building."

With the collaboration of the departments, Francis said students and faculty will notice growing continuity between the two.

College mourns the death of student athlete JOHN SCAFETTA , Cf/'1'

Grant Randall Wallenda left far too soon. While he spent most of his time corralling defenders on the football field, he was also the one to comfort a friend in need. In the process, he embedded lasting memories into all those around him, according to his family and friends.

"There are a lot of great things about him that I remember and unfortunately those are all that I have," said Leonard Wallenda, Grant's father. "I can't just pinpoint one."

The 19-year old Palomar student died July 13 after injuries sustained during a June 2 motorcycle accident near the San Bernardino Mountains. the San According to Bernardino County Coroner's report, Wallenda was riding his

2003 Suzuki motorcycle at what was considered a "high rate of speed" on Highway 18, five miles north of Green Valley Lake Road in the Running Springs area. He then attempted to pass another motorist on the right shoulder when he lost control of his bike, collided with a tree and was thrown off. He was transported to Lorna Linda University Medical Center where he remained in intensive care.

"Grant loved life," Wallenda said. "He enjoyed every minute of it."

Grant grew up in Escondido, until the age of 12 when he moved to Grass Valley in Northern California to live with his mother. Two years later, he decided to move back to Southern California with his father, where he discovered his love of football.

"I was actually the one that got

him into football in middle school," Cory Coghlan, Grant's stepbrother said. "When he first moved out here, he didn't really know anybody because he lived with his mom. I decided I wanted to try playing football because I knew the coach. He ended up going with me and that's when his whole football career basically started."

As a freshman at West Valley High in Hemet, Grant excelled in his first season of contact football where his father said he averaged eight tackles per game.

During his senior year in 2006, he earned first-team honors on the All-Riverside County team as a defensive lineman for the Mustang football team and was selected to the All-CIF- Southern Division V first-team. He ranked 14th in the state in sacks, TURN TO

¡ ob Dylan said it best when he sang "The times, they are achanging." Well as the times adjust, so does the Palomar College newspaper, The Telescope.

You may pick up this first issue of the semester and sense that something has changed. Well, in fact, everything is different.

Like every other semester, editors and writers come and go. In fact, one major change is our new journalism adviser Erin Hiro who will undoubtedly succeed in stepping in for Weddy Nelson' our longtime adviser. ' The editors at The Telescope decided that, since our surroundings and personnel are changing, maybe it was time for us to turn in a different direction. A new look and a fresh start was in order. No better time than the beginning of a new school year, right?

As you flip though this issue, you will notice the transformation from the get-go: Our new front page is geared toward getting you, the reader, to pick up the paper and know exactly where to find the stories you are interested in reading. That goes with designing a more attractive paper that is more accessible tci our readers.

Our flag, the title at the top of the front page which hasn't been updated in more than half a decade, has finally been introduced to modem times.

The ~ize of The Telescope has also changed. The length of the paper IS now shorter, allowing for a compact size that is more convenient to handle and read.

The Telescope will also have key features that are easy on the eyes. Take our new calendars, which veer from the unsightly boxes that once decorated our news and sports sections. They are now easier to read and will contain more information that you need to know.

Other key features include the new back page, which will provide a full-page action shot of one of the many Comet athletes on campus. Also, clearer fonts and text will envelop the paper, along with newly added weekly crossword and sudoku puzzles to keep you occupied during those extensive classes.

For some of the longtime Telescope readers who like the old version, ~tay calm. Although we have received a facelift, our goals remam the same.

OU: main objective of delivering the news you expect every week re~ams constant. That will not change. In fact, our aim will be to bnng you even stronger coverage.

The opportunity to be a student at a two-year college isn't always embraced by students at Palomar. They can't wait for their ticket to a four-year school. But as long as you're here, why not make the best of the experience and take advantage of what is happening around your campus? Players like Aaron and Babe Ruth gained respect through dedication, crafting and perfecting a skill and pure love for the game. Not through custommade stadiums and 'roids.

They claimed their titles at the height of their careers and went on to continue to play and perform - not years past their prime, hanging on to the last string of a career while their teams suffer by their loss of skill.

It's no secret to why the Giants kept him. It was Bonds' fan attraction that paid the Giants' way from Candlestick Park to the new AT&T Park, which is most likely why the park was designed to accommodate lefthanded batters.

One can only hope future players of our time do not follow in Bonds' footsteps, that they do not leave the question open as to whether they are worthy of their accomplishments.

Bonds set out to beat a record, to be better than the next man - not better his game. And at what cost? He sends the message to the next generation of players that baseball is about titles and recognition, not about the game: Aaron's message displayed on the AT&T jumbotron was simple and humble.

"My hope today, as it was on that April evening in 1974, is that the achievement of this record will inspire others to chase their own dreams."

Why successful women find the underachiever attractive JESSICA YADEGARAN , C . .e\P,

In Katherine Heigl's summer film, "Knocked Up," the "Grey's Anatomy" star and Botticelli _b eauty plays a successful career girl who has a one-night stand with an unemployed, slobbish slacker. When she becomes pregnant, the two reunite and eventually fall in love.

In pop culture, this isn't the first time the loser gets the girl. Think John Cusack in "Say Anything," Jason Schwartzman in "Shop Girl" and almost every Adam Sandler comedy. For Type-A women at the top of their game, what's the allure?

"They're safe and fun," says Dana Ovadia of Walnut Creek. "You feel like you're still living in your youth when you're with a guy like that."

Ovadia says she has friends who justify dating losers, even if they're "terrible" boyfriends.

"I have friends who say, 'I'm not going to marry him or anything, I'm just having fun,"' she says.

In "Knocked Up,"Allison Scott (Heigl) is a newly promoted, on-air correspondent for E! Entertainment Television, and a fox. Ben Stone (Seth Rogen) is a slovenly pothead who stays home watching movies with his fellow slacker roommates.

Their goal in life is to launch a Web site listing when and where actresses appear nude in movies.

Ben is the first to admit that Allison is too good for him ("You're prettier than I am"), but he is also sweet, funny and honest. While their yin and yang makes for great comedic entertainment, experts say there is something to the pairing of underachieving men and overachieving women.

"Things have changed a lot," says Phelps. "Women have become extreme over-

"Sometimes women are so programmed that we forget to have any fun," she says. "It makes me so sad for women today because you don't want to be so overachieving that you forget to smell the roses."

Lafayette psychologist Suzanne Dudeck says there are endless reasons why high-achieving women choose laid-back men.

"These loser types make wonderful dates," she says. "They are charming. They will call. They'll say, 'I felt something.' They send the flowers. They ask your opinion. And the women love it."

Ditto from the guy's perspective.

"Successful women are sexy," says college student Reed Sutter, of Pleasant Hill. "They're in control and know what they want."

Women like it, too, says Dudeck, but it's a fairly new phenomenon.

In some cases, Phelps says, that side of them has never been touched, and these men help them tap

"We girls of the 1960s didn't have strong role models," she says. "So we needed to prove that we could do it all. Go to college, become something like boys, be it lawyers or doctors, and cook and sew and garden and entertain and still be caretakers."

In proving that they can do a million tasks at once, Dudeck says, women get approval. She calls this a sociological and cultural shift, and a role reversal between men and women.

"We need what the men needed back then approval and recognition," she says.

"Instead of bragging about what their husbands do, which women still do, now they brag about us.

They're impressed to be with us. The more there's acceptance for women in high-powered jobs, the more the men like to snag one of us."

Shannon Walpole doesn't feel right passing judgment on less-than-professional guys. After all, she says, you can't help who you fall in love with.

Still, the Walnut Creek lawyer does believe their unions with overachieving women are challenging.

"It's rare for those relationships to be successful, because your core values have to be the same," she says.

That was Leah Reeves' experience. Reeves, who works in medical sales, dated a guy for five years, whom she defines as a loser.

"He was a bad boy, and all the girls wanted to date him," says Reeves, on business in Walnut Creek from Portland. "My family tried to be supportive, but they knew he was a loser."

Said bad boy dropped out of college, and, after a stint in the Army, settled into a graveyard shift job at an adult video store.

"It finally hit me then," Reeves says. "It wasn't going to work out for us."

"Grant loved playing football," Wallenda said of his son, who also led the Mustangs volleyball team to an unbeaten regular season and Citrus Belt Championship his senior year. "There isn't anything else to say about that. He loved that sport."

When Grant did not have an opportunity to play at a four-year university out of high school, he became one of only two Mustang football players who graduated in 2006 to continue to pursue the sport at the collegiate level.

Looking to improve his stock as a Division I prospect, he headed to Palomar as a 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive end. As a freshman, he saw considerable playing time and was a projected starter on the Comets defensive line for the upcoming season.

"The kid had a lot of potential and upside," Palomar co-defensive coordinator J.G Aegerter said. "He practiced really well in the spring and we were looking for big things with him. He was definitely a (potential) Division I defensive end and was absolutely an outstanding young man.

It was a shock to me and the whole team."

"We hope we see more collaboration from the faculty," Francis said. "Hopefully students find it more convenient to go from their chemistry class to their biology class.

It will be a little more compact. We'll have all the faculty in one central location, instead of all over campus."

Francis said at any one time the building will populate between 1,000 and 1,500 students.

The six lecture halls, which house about 60 students in each room, come equipped with data ports and power outlets for laptops at each desk along with a flat-screen computer, projector and two motorized screens for the professors.

The building also offers a Geographical Information System lab, which Miller said is a very powerful mapping program that allows students to work at an individual monitor at their seat. The monitors are hydraulic, enabling the desk to be transformed into a flat surface.

"Students expect to interact with hightech technology," Francis said. "These days if you're not providing it, it's kind of difficult for them to relate."

The physics lab allows for group seating and contains a structural grid ceiling for experiments. Miller said the grid is attached to the structural steel of the building and is strong enough to hang a couple of cars.

Miller said other upcoming additions to the Natural Science building include a recently donated aquarium and a flat screen monitor for the main lobby, along with telescopes and a viewing area on the roof that overlooks San Marcos.

Miller also added that palm trees will be planted near the front of the building and both lanes near the east entrance of the building on Comet Circle will be opened.

"The rest of the landscaping they will be working for probably three or four weeks," Miller said. "We (the students and workers) can definitely coexist."

Future projects include the remodeling of the S building- the first Proposition M venture - a new baseball field behind Parking Lot 9 and a new planetarium with an IMAX theater adjacent to the science building are also in the works, but Miller said at this point it is just a concept.

"We're going to see other buildings this same size on campus," Miller said. "This (the Natural Science building) is a really good sample of what we are going to see elsewhere on campus."

Bishop spent his first 22 years at Palomar in the classroom and he said he is thrilled about the chance to go back.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to go back to classes but concerned about the job I didn't finish," he said.

Bishop added: "Going back to faculty allows me to get away from grade-change issues."

As for the next Director of

Student Affairs, Bishop said he doesn't know who it will be. But he does know an interim appointee will take his former seat for at least a year and then a nationwide search will be held.

"It will be a more than difficult task to find someone to replace his passion... dedication ... and pride ... creating a student friendly environment on campus," Eichelberger said.

PLAYING WITH For many college freshmen, handling finances can be daunting - and dangerous oursework, roommates and campus life aren't the only things you'll be getting used to your first year of college. Learning how to manage your money - especially since there's not much of it- is one of the most essential skills to making it through your freshman year.

Between books, laundry and the occasional pizza, the cost of college living can really add up.

And with increased competition for part-time jobs, you may find your financial resources limited.

Many students rely on credit cards to make ends meet. But leaning on them to much can be costly. According to a 2001 study by student loan company Nellie Mae, of the 83 percent of undergraduate students with credit cards, 21 percent carried a debt of between $3,000 and $7,000.

College can be stressful enough without adding financial problems to the list. But a little planning can help you stay on top of things. We talked to Ben Breard, an assistant branch manager at Chevy Chase Bank in Washington, D.C., and he gave us some helpful tips for students.

Open an account Breard suggests that students set up their own bank account, if they don't already have one, before they start school.

"Parents send their kids off to school and an avalanche of events takes place," Breard said.

Starting school is overwhelming for most.

Preparation is important. It's better to have the account activated before classes start, he said.

"Parents need to decide if they will be involved financially," Breard adds. By having their name on the account, parents can call and check on their child's balance and put money in the account if necessary, he said.

Setting up the account is the easy part, Breard said. It's supervising what's in it that's tough.

Two things to be careful of: • ATM fees: Remember that when you take money out of another bank's ATM, you will get slapped with a big fat charge. Most times, you will get double slammed with charges from the other bank, as well as your own. These fees can add up.

• Deposits: When you deposit an out-of-state check, it takes a few days for the check to clear, so the money will not be available right away.

Remember to allow time when you are writing checks.

Use caution with credit cards It's important to have credit cards, Breard adds.

"You want to start establishing credit," he said.

"You want to have at least enough credit to buy a roundtrip ticket home for emergency situations."

Tips for establishing good credit: • Pay off your balance every month. This is the

key to establishing good credit, and you won't get the interest fee slapped on top of your balance, Breard said.

• Don't get a store credit card, Breard advises. "These limit you. Get a major card that you can use in a lot of places," he said.

• Don't get drawn into travel miles, he adds.

"You'll end of spending more because of the free trips than you would normally spend."

SAN JOSE - Four out of 10 users of Web site Facebook unwittingly expose themselves to the risk of identify theft and virus attacks, according to a new study that underscores growing concerns among security experts about online social networking.

Sophos, a Boston-based Internet security company that set up a fictional account on the Palo Alto-based site, reported that in a random survey of Facebook users, 41 percent divulged personal information, such as phone numbers, birthdates and e-mail addresses, that could be viewed by strangers.

A Sophos fake user, "Freddi Staur," invited 200 Facebook users to be an online friend.

Eighty-seven accepted the invitation, and of those, 82 "leaked" personal information.

Sophos said Face book's privacy features "go far beyond" those of competing social networking sites. And in a statement, a Facebook spokesperson said, "Facebook has long deployed technology that limits the availability of personal information and welcomes every opportunity to educate users about how to protect their data online."

Facebook users are not the only Internet social-networkers to face dangers in this new era

of instant information-swapping. In January, News Corp. and its MySpace social-networking site were sued by four families who said their underage daughters were sexually abused by adults they met on the site.

Furthermore, security experts have begun sounding alarms about a new generation of thieves trolling the Internet, from social-networking pages to sites devoted to rental units and real estate, looking fcir personal information they can use in a scam.

Sophos said it decided to look at Facebook, which has some 31 million users, because the company requests some personal details before giving someone a new account, said Ron O'Brien, senior security analyst with Sophos.

Facebook then allows users to cloak that information, though many don't.

"The only way to avoid that is to go to the security setting on your profile and set it so it can only be seen by a limited number of people," O'Brien said.

After suffering a broken leg, a knee operation and four concussions, Scott Cathcart decided playing sports was no longer in his best interest. Not giving up on the business of athletics, Cathcart has found new ways to pursue his passion for sports stepping in as the Athletic Director at Palomar.

Cathcart will take over the job on Sept. 1 for the retiring John Woods, who has been Palomar's Athletic Director for 21 years.

Rather than filling in the shoes that Woods has left, Cathcart said he would like to maintain what has bee put in front of him at Palomar, at least for now.

Cathcart, 52, was born and raised in Santa Barbara where he starred in football at Santa Barbara High. His father, Sam Cathcart, coached him and sports became a huge part of his life.

Cathcart then went on to attend Santa Barbara City College for three semesters, where he continued his injury plagued football career.

"I have been around athletics all my life, since my father was a track and football coach," Cathcart said. "From a very young age, I was always going to some kind of game. I can't think of anything else I have had a real passion for."

Cathcart attended Cal State University at Fresno on a football scholarship in the spring of 1974.

"It was great, all I ever did was get hurt." Cathcart said. "I was not an All-American, not by a long shot."

After numerous InJuries, Cathcart graduated with a degree in business administration but sports continued to dominate his life.

Cathcart became a coach for three years for the football team at his alma mater, SBCC, and a slew of jobs within the world of sports ensued.

Cathcart worked at Cal State University Long Beach as the Sports Information Director for 17 months after SBCC. Het took a job as the director of media publie relations with the CIF Southern Section, where his tenure lasted 10 years. He then went to CSU Long Beach again as the director of media public relations and also worked with sports administration.

In 1996, Cathcart moved across the county to Philadelphia and worked as an Assistant Athletic Director at Temple University and would later be promoted to Associate Director of Athletics.

He then transitioned to the Associate Dean of Athletics, Health and Physical Education at Alan Hancock College in Santa Maria.

"I have transitioned before if

the job, and I am very aware of the responsibility I have replacing someone who has been successful for so long."

Cathcart's co-workers already feel they have made the right decision on Palomar's new athletic director.

"I think he is going to fit in very well here at Palomar," said Bonnie Plein, Athletic Department. Secretary. "We are very excited to have him here."

In Cathcart's first evaluation he said they need to take an even harder look at the current condition and limitations of Palomar's Athletic Department.

"Going forward we need to keep trying to provide the best

facilities that we possibly can for student athletes to come to our program and for our coaches to be able to recruit to," Cathcart said.

He said he is focused on maintaining the traditional program Palomar has and the student athlete's positive attitude, "The big thing is caring about students." Woods said. "The athletic side is secondary and it is apparent he is very solid in that regard," Woods said.

Cathcart said: "It's evident how devoted the staff is here at Palomar and it shows in the strength of the program.! want to be able to maintain that strength in John's absence."

Since Cathcart arrived at Palomar during the summer, Woods has stuck around to help train Cathcart.

"He has a wealth of experience at the Division I and community college level," Woods said. "I think he brings a lot of positive things to Palomar and I am really confident he is going to do a great job."

Catchcart said: "I have tremendous respect and admiration for John Woods," Cathcart said. "I have spent a lot of time with John, which has been a tremendous part of this opportunity."

Cathcart said what lured him to Palomar College was the size and scope of the school and its large enrollment.

"I had an interest in the area and there are 39 high schools in the district compared to eight in northern Santa Barbara County," Cathcart said.

Cathcart has found reasons to be comfortable in his new atmosphere.

"I have confidence in my background and in our dedicated coaching staff," Cathcart said.

because it's so transitional," Early said. "A lot of it comes down to recruiting, the returning players coming back better than they were as freshmen, and it all comes back to the hard work" In the off-season, 17 Comets signed with four-year schools.

Lorenzen led the nation in offensive production with 2,960 yards passing and 26 touchdown passes and eight rushing touchdown.

The offensive line will only have one starter returning in center Victor Aquilina and thanks to the Oceanside High product, freshman quarterback Steven Carroll, Early is in every coach's favorite predicament-two elite quarterbacks to choose from.

Last season Hunter Wanket was the back up to Lorenzen and seems to have the advantage to win the job due to his experience, Early said.

"We have really been trying hard to get everyone on the same page since we have a lot of new guys coming in," said Wanket.

"We have a lot of talent and if everyone gets on the same page we will get things rolling fast early on this season."

Wanket, a 6'4 sophomore, was named to the All-Southern California Community College Combine Team over the summer.

The Comets defense this season will lack experience to last years team but will hope to continue the same success with Bethea and outside linebacker Hunt returning.

In Palomar's 2006 campaign, the Comets lost by margins of only seven, six, four, three and then two points in the playoffs.

The Comets defense flashed greatness by holding Mt. San Antonio and West Los Angeles to seven and zero points, respectively.

"Defensively, we need to shut everyone down," Bethea said.

"Last year we felt that the defense let up some big plays and we need to limit that this year if we want to reach our goals. We need to put our offense in good positions to score."

The special teams will have to do without kicker Jake Harry who signed with the University of Missouri this off-season but will feature an explosive kick return specialist in Hill who averaged 24.8 yards per kick return a'1 12.8 yards per punt return.
