Cinco de Mayo festivities 'a hit' By Jessica Halston THE TELESCOPE

The annual Cinco de Mayo celebration hosted by MEChA and the Inter-Club Council on Palomar College's main campus was threatened by rain, but the celebration of Mexican culture ran smoothly, said student activities coordinator Paul Groom. The festivities commemorated the 1862 victory of the Mexican army

over French invading forces in the town of Puebla, Mexico. MEChA, also known as Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlan, presented live entertainment, contests and a keynote speaker to celebrate the day. Club president Manny Galaviz said the group had been planning the event since February in order to secure the live acts far enough in advance.

A seven-man mariachi band called Mariacha la Barca toured the campus , stopping to serenade each department. French instructor Chantal Maher said her class and two neighboring Spanish classes were drawn out of their rooms by the music. "I was so glad they were (touring the campus)," Maher said. Future nixed for Paralegal program By Chrystal! Kanyuck THE TELESCOPE

Beginning next fall , Palomar College will no longer admit new students into the paralegal studies program. The program is being cut due to a lack of resources , low enrollment and an increased emphasis within the legal field on bachelor's degrees , said Angelo Corpora, the programs adviser. About 25 students graduate from the program every year. The program is for students who wish to become

specialized legal assistants. Paralegals are authorized to perform certain functions of a lawyer. "All the students that are currently in the program will finish the program," Corpora said. Vice President of Instruction Berta Cuaron said that the school is committed to helping students in the program finish , even if it means running certain classes with as few as five students. Palomar College students will choose a student government president and vice president during a campus-wide election May 18 and 19. The online election will take place during finals week. While some have voiced concern about voter participation during a period that is already hectic for students, others argue that simply holding an election this spring is necessary. "There's really no good time to have an election at this point," said college president Robert Deegan. "I am glad that they are having it. They are doing the best job under the circumstances." Deegan was referring to members of the Associated Student Government who passed a resolution approving a special election at their May 4 meeting. Class of 2005 to walk May 20 By Thomas May THE TEUSCOPE

Palomar College will honor this year's graduating class at its annual commencement ceremony May 20. The ceremony will be held on the football field at the San Marcos campus starting at 5 p.m., however, students are expected to arrive at the Howard Brubeck Theatre at 3:30 p.m. dressed in cap and gown. Besides current graduating students, students who have already graduated in the previous summer and fall semesters are also invited to attend and receive their diplomas. Donna Greene of Student Services said she has coordinated the event since 1986. "I find it to be such a rewarding experience to be a part of," Greene said. "I still get tearyeyed every year watching people get their diplomas - just seeing the excitement and happiness that these students and their families are feeling makes me really happy." Greene said her proudest moment came when she watched her son walk in 2000. "He had already graduated the December before the ceremony, and he wasn't going to come back for the ceremony," Greene said. "He came after I talked him into it. I asked
