ASG treasurer resigns By Roger Fregoso Staff Writer After serving more than a year with the Associated Student Government and starting a project to improve student awareness, 16-year-old Treasurer Sarah Garcia resigned last week. Garcia resigned Oct 21 saymg she was involved in too many things. She described her experience with ASG as wonderful and exciting. "It increased my awareness as to what..s

Sarah Garcia going on at a statewide level," she said. "And it let me bring information back to the students." Garcia's resignation comes after the president and a senator resigned from ASG three weeks ago. She was working on the speech and debate team and was carrying a 20-unit class load. Garcia said she felt it was time to focus on fewer items. "You can be a light bulb and diffuse light everywhere," she said. "I want to be a laser beam." Garcia was appointed to the treasurer position halfway through the 1991 fall semester. She ran uncontested in the 1992 spring elec-

tions and continued to fill that seat until Wednesday's weekly meeting. She agreed to train the next treasurer saying she "didn't want to leave the ASG cold." "She was a great member of ASG. We're going to miss her," said Student Activities Director Jim Bowen. Garcia leaves the student government a week after urging her colleagues to spend ASG funds wisely. She cited that in the first eight meetings, the panel approved over $10,000 for expenditures. She also leaves after successfully creating a monetary request policy and getting the ASG panel to approve the changes. The policy is designed to help ASG when allocating money to campus clubs. The policy states that ASG will only hear a monetary request from clubs or individuals after they have explored all other opportunities of funding. Improving student awareness about the student government was a pet project Garcia worked on for weeks before leaving her post The student awareness program would, . according to Garcia, heighten student awareness, provide student feedback and promote positive interaction between students, their government and professors. Garcia got unanimous approval from her ASG colleagues and the Faculty Senate to pursue the project. According to ASG PresidentLowell Kepics "it's unfortunate," about Garcia's decision to resign. "People have to do what they have to do," he added. Garcia joined ASG at the age of 15 after graduating from Orange Glen High School in EscOndido via the California High School Proficiency Exam. Upon arriving at Palomar College, she enrolled in 15 units, was a member of various clubs and a member of Phi Ro Phi while holding a 3.5 grade-point average. Garcia said "nothing has been set in stone yet," in regards to her future plans. Currently she studies speech pathology.

TV anchor says national media has lost objectivity By Roger Fregoso Staff Writer According to one local television station anchorman, some media professionals have lost their sense of objectivity. At a Palomar radio and television class Oct 22, KFMB-TV Channel 8 anchorman Hal Clement detailed the changing media and lashed out at the national networks for loosing their credibility and trying to compete with shows like "Hard Copy" and "A Current Affair." "It's important that people feel you're objective," said Clement, anchor of the 5 p.m. news at the station. "The national news media has gotten away from objectivity ... objectivity has taken the back seat," he added. Clement told students interested in the profession "it's an interesting field," but that everyone wants to get into the media Defending local television stations from the network newscasts in New York, "the level playing field has gone out the win-
