at Palomar. In previous years it has played to sell-out crowds. This ballet, first performed in 1892, appeals to everyone.

July 11 will be the day for snorkeling and getting a good look at the reef and the many tropical fish that live there.

On the morning of July 12, the group will fly to Moorea and transfer to the hotel. The group will spend the next two days touring the island 'o n the circle island tour including the ancient Marae religious sites and doing activities arranged by the instructor.

July 15 will find the group on their way to Tetiaroa, the private atoll of Marlon Brando. The fourteen isles and islets of Tetiaroa were formerly used as vacation retreat for Tahitian royalty, then as a copra plantation.

Presently it is owned by Marlon Brando, who prefers to be called Tetiaroa's caretaker. He has built an ecologically balanced visitor's complex on one of the islets,Onetahi.

Shop instructor returns following recent accident

By Wendy Hayward Two weeks after Industrial Education instructor Paul Meeker broke both his legs in a motercycle accident, he was back in classroom tea ching from a wheelchair. " I had to get back in the swing of things. I was desperate. The only time I was really in pain was when I wasn't doing anything."

Meeker broke his legs in several places when his motorcycle slid on gravel and tore through 40 feet of barbed wire, which "nearly cut off my head. I was fortunate. " But h e will walk again.

As a matter offact, he is currently repairing the machine he crashed on. " I probably could've broken my legs walking. I just happened to be on a motorcycle."

He hadl)'t been eating or sleeping regularly and blamed the accident

on his preoccupation with personal problems. " I was a "basket" case at the time of the crash."

But now, although in a wheelchair, Meeker "feels better than I have in a long time."

"He says he " got a lot of positive energy after the accident:' resulting in part from all the people who were concerned about him.

Back in the motorcycle shop, he is enthusiastically helping students with their machines.

"I love the satisfaction of seeing the lights go on in a students eyes after I explained something."

Meeker says "I'd break both my legs again to feel this good, I was really letting my problems get to me."

When will he be out of his wheelchair? " I'll be on my feet again in a week or so. Dancing."

FIELD TRIP TO SOCIETY ISLANDS

Tahiti,Mooreaand Tetiaroa will be featured in a unique field course which involves mainland lectures combined with a field trip to the exotic Society Islands.

The program offers an opportunity to study the flora and fauna of Tahiti, Moorea and Tetiaroa.

Some of the topics to be studied will be island formation, biotic atoll ecology, tropical oceanography and insular biology. Insular and coral reef ecosystems will also be analyzed. But, as any of la st year's participants can attest there is also time for fun.

The two week trip costs $1845 and includes airfare, hotel accomodations, charter flights and all excursions and entrance fees. The class to register for is Biology 99 (two units) Natural History of Tahiti.

Those signed up for the trip will l_eave Los Angeles for Papeete, July 8, 1983. On July 9 they will arrive and transfer to the hotel. After an orientation meeting, they will have the rest of the day to enjoy the island.

July 10 will be spent on the circle island tour which includes Captain Cook's monument, Matavi Bay made famous by Captain Bligh and a visit to the Botanical Gardens and

By Polly Filanc Opening the eyes and hearts of audiences this holiday season, the "Sugar Plum Fairy" will wave her magic when Palomar and the New West Ballet School present the third annual full-length production of "The Nutcracker," under the direction of Eugenia Keefer.

The production, at the Palomar College Theatre, begins at 8p.m.

December 21, with matinee and evening performances December 22, 23, and 26 at 2 and 8 p.m.

-Sponsored by the Palomar College DepartSpeech/ Theatre/ Dance ment, Community Services, and the New West Ballet School, the production plays before sell-out crowds.

Tickets for the show can be purchased through the Speech/Theater/ Dance Department. For reservations and information call 744-1150, Ext. 2405. Tickets price is $6.

According to Keefer, "The Nutcracker" has become popular because it appeals to everyone, especially children. It is not a heavy classic like 'Swan Lake.' It is colorfull, has a good story line, and has variety."

For her third year, Keefer, former soloist with the California Ballet Company and now artistic director of the New West Ballet School, will perform the "Sugar Plum Fairy," alternating the role with Sylvia Gamonet, originally from Peru and former member of the Oklahoma Ballet.

Also featured in this year's production will be guest artist Michael Onstad, for his second year as the "Cavalier," the "Sugar Plum's" escort. Onstad is from the Ballet West Company in Utah.

Other featured artists will be Jeri Jones, former soloist and original member of the California Ballet, and Kathy Gillespie, who will both alternate in featured solo "Dewdrop" in the second act. Jones will also perform "Snow Queen" and Gillespie will do "Spanish."

David Crookes, student, will appear as the "Snow King" and in "Russian.'' Crookes was with the Pennsylvania Ballet for 21/z years. "I have done most everything in 'The Nutcracker'. In working with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia, I did a piece in 'It's a Sunny Day.' As a guest artist for the Atlantic City Ballet, I did the 'Spanish' and 'Russian' variations in 'The Nutcracker.' For the fund raising program, 'World Premiere of Sports Extra,' I also danced.''

Crookes, who began dancing late at 18, studied under victor Moreno.

He said, "I've always been interested in dancing and have always admired Fred Astaire."

With over 100 people in the cast, aged 4 to adult, Keefer said, "A lot of decisions have to be made in putting on a show this large. With more than one person alternating for certain roles, it is hard to divide three people for seven shows equally.

"It is also important that the cast this large not miss rehearsals."

Through open auditions, the cast was chosen for several reasons.

"They are chosen for their ability, for their appropriateness for the part such as height, shape, overall appearance in front of the audience, and most of all, for fairness to everyone involved.

These decisions are made in the mind of the director, who is the shaping influence in the production.''

The production first began as a community project to raise funds for the college. In exchange for advertisement for her ballet school, Keefer agreed to be director. In the past two (Continued on page 7)

We stood in line to see Santa, and when it old enough to understand the meaning of the word depression. I did know however, came my turn I was not going to act scared or that all of a sudden our diet had changed and bashful like the kids in front me. I walked up the pies and cakes were few and far between. to him and just plain told him that, as he I also noticed that when we asked for knew, I had been a good boy all year and my something like a new toy, we heard new mother could tell him so, and I wanted just words like(_"We have no money" or "Do you one thing real bad. that was in the toy section of the dime store.

I also mentioned that I would appreciate (a word I had just learned) anything else on the counter, a gun and holster, maybe.

We had decorated our Christmas tree and the house, days long before Christmas. In every room, red and green streamers hung from the chandelier and ceiling, with icicles hanging from them. The big sliding glass doors were draped with mistletoe.

Yet something was different. We had the same amount of visitors as last year, but they didn't leave the candy like they had the ye~rs before. They probably forgot it. All of us kids were busy telling each other what we had asked Santa for.

Christmas eve, we gathered around Mom and Dad and listened to the first Christmas according to Matthew and Luke. After the reading, we would put cak~ and milk on the

Traditions die hard and Christmas traditions are even longer lived. Living in Southern California all my life, I have not been exposed to the "white Christmas" of the eastern and central portions of the nation. Even so, my family, and I am sure many other Southern Californian families also, have their own Christmas traditions .

While few of us wake up with a snowcovered lawn, we have the exclusive advantage of being able to go up to the mountains to play in the snow and come home to a relatively warm home when we tire of it. A little snow is fun; a lot of snow gets old in a hurry.

One of my favorite traditions is Christmas decorating. Decorating a tree can be a lot of fun for the entire family. This is one of the few activities in which even the youngest member of the family becomes an instant expert. Many of the lights are set up in such a .away that if one burns out none of

the bulbs will work. All the bulbs must be loosened and tried one at a time until the problem bulb is found.

After the lights are on the tree it's time to move on to the ornaments and getting them out of the closet in the same number of pieces as they went in. The second involves placing the ornaments high enough to be out of reach of any cat. Cats love to use those brightly colored ornaments as punching bags.

There are a few traditions I could do without. The object of Christmas shopping is to get all the shopping out of the way in as few trips as possible. Unfortunately, many of us fall short of this goal and are stuck in crowded stores at the last minute. There is nothing like trying to shop at the last minute to bring Christmas cheer to us all.

In fact, as we hustled and bustled through the malls getting pushed and shoved by swarms of shoppers, It's almost enough to make us want to bring a fistful of Christmas cheer to to their rosy cheeks .

By Wendy Hayward As a child nothing could have been more magical than Christmas with every aspect of it perfect.

So one year I wondered aloud,"Why is our Christmas tree fake - made of painted wood and plastic and re-used every year?

Everyone else has a real Christmas tree that they cut themselves every year."

But the answer to my query was sillier than the question.

My dad explained that we couldn' t have a real evergreen tree in our house because my Mom was allergic to them. But we could go cut our own tree. Manzanita tree that was .

Now what did I get myself into? Imagine driving to some desolate canyon, traipsing for miles through stickery bushes and swamps, not even knowing what I was looking for.

Finally, one of my older brothers yelled, "I found a good one."

My brother Bob and I ran to find out what a "good one" was, glad to get this over with.

But when we saw the bush they were referring to, we were somewhat sk t:J~ tical.

No wonder we hadn't been able to find one. It looked just like all the ugly sagebr~sh to us . This had to be the most pathetic idea for a Christmas tree ever dreamed ~P 路 My Dad had us all crawling around in the dirt, chopping away at the darn red trunk, for hours, then finally dragging it to the truck, all the while watching for the police.

For some reason it is illegal to cut down the ugly things.

To make matters worse after unloading at home, all the leaves had to be carefully taken off, one by one, without breaking off any little twigs .

When all the leaves were finally off (many hours later with sore fingers, it looked, even worse.

By this time the situation looked hopeless,

Early the next morning, we headed down the stairs one step behind Mom. The sliding doors were always closed Christmas eve. We didn't want someone bothering Santa when he made his stop.

Mother opened the doors and three kids rushed in looking for presents. I was looking for the red car. There was something red urder the tree. It was my red car, but it was not the big red car. As I picked up the car and looked at it, I knew what had happened.

Santa had looked at the wrong counter.

When he saw a red car, that was the one he told his elves to make for me.

I promised myself that next year, I would have to give Santa better directions.

Yuletide traditions survive even in Southern California

Parsons' table for Santa and then run upstairs to bed. When excited, it is hard for a young child to go to sleep.

so Bob and I left our older brother and dad to do with it whatever they wanted.

That night in the living room stood a spray-painted silver dead tree, with no leaves, held up with wires.

We began disguising it reluctantly with a couple strings of lights, then varieties of ornaments, many collected for at least 25 years our family had lived in the house.

As we decorated, we discovered that all those twigs we grudgingly avoided breaking off created places to hang ornaments .

Then came the icicles, hung on one by one on the many stems . The reflection of the blinking Christmas lights made them twinkle from the slightest movement .

The finishing touch was a blanket around the bottom for the Nativity scene.

When we finished and turned out all the other lights in the room, that ugly little bush with blinking Christmas lights wiped away all our skepticism and brought to home the real spirit of Christmas .

By Sarah Grimes As December wanes and the Christmas season gathers momentum, I am without my usual holiday exCitement.

While some people are having visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads, this year, I have visions of Santa's reindeer dropping dung on my roof.

I don' t mean to sound like a proverbial Scrooge, but times are hard. Who can afford Christmas these days ? Money is tight. Gifts are expensive. And shopping is an awful chore.

If you are patient enough to track down a parking space at the huge malls, upon entering the stores, shopping takes on the atmosphere of a brawl. Survival of the fittest reigns in the poshest of emporiums.

With grim determination, shoppers elbow and fight to get to a rack of clothes . People check their lists and make their purchases, while betraying little joy in the act of giving.

Even with extra help hired for the season, salespeople are few and harried. Just paying for an item results in standing in an endless line.

Shoppers speculate in frustration that Christmas is the biggest merchandising gimmick of all. Without a doubt, December 25 is a holy day for merchants.

Scant attention is paid to Jesus Christ anymore. Maybe you'll attend church on his birthday. You might set up a Nativity scene on your coffee table or television. But his teachings and precepts are ignored, even during this blessed season. Jesus is an afterthought to many .

For me, tis the season to be weary. I'm weary of holiday hype, of crowds, and of forced cheer.

Yet, despite my weariness, I still look forward, not to Christmas, but to the conclusion of one year and the dawn of the next. At the very least, Christmas still symbolizes a rebirth, another chance and hope for better times .

Tamales add spice to season's eatinqs

By Polly Filanc While tamales are a traditional food for those festive occasions of Christmas and New Year's in many Mexican families, they can also be made as part of the fun in a gettogether with family or friends for anyone.

Tamales are basically mas a (ground corn) spread on corn husks that are wrapped around a variety of fillings .

There are tamales of beef, pork, venison, poultry, seafood, beans, beans and chili, fresh corn and chile, nd cheese .

Then there are sweet tamales called tamalitos, which are small and filled with all sorts of fruits and nuts, sweet and spiced

beans, candied fruits, and even caramel.

There are also tamales with no filling , The masa is wrapped in husks and used as a substitute for bread. In some areas, along the tropical Gulf Coast and Oaxaca, these tamales are wrapped in banana leaves which give them a distinct flavor.

Tamales may be the most ancient form in which corn was utilized by the Aztec Indians.

According to Bernardino de Sahagun, a Spanish friar who wrote soon 路 after the Spanish Conquest in Mexico, "The foods that the lords (Aztec) ate" included "white tamales with beans forming a sea shell on top . . . red tamales with beans . . tamales

with honey . .."

In primitive times, tamales were cooked without utensils by burying them in the hot ashes of a campfire. The husks protected the corn meal long enough for them to cook properly.

After the Indians acquired pottery, which was long before the Spanish arrived, they developed new methods of cooking tamales.

They generally steamed them in an underground pit or in a covered pot in which a trivet was used to hold them about an inch above water. Corn cobs were sometimes used instead of a trivet.

Some of the early Indian tamales may have been flavored by the husks, but

basicaily they were hotly spiced with chili, as modern tamales tend to be.

When it comes to making tamales, the expression, "Too many cooks spoil the broth," does not apply as there are plenty of jobs for everyone .

The ingredients can be purchased at many grocery and specialty food stores which handle Mexican foods .

The utensils needed to prepare and cook tamales are two large stock pots, steamer or canning kettle, huge bowl (for mixing masa), fry pan, beater, large spoons, and tablespoons.

VIDEO FEVER

Looking for a cheap thrill? Just a little something to put the challenge back into life?

For a mere quarter, Tony Lopez (upper right picture) and his array of video games can provide that missing stimulation.

Lopez, who is the supervisor for all the vending machines here, is proud of what his computeri"zed machines, housed in the campus game room, provide for students . " I sincerely believe that these games are a way to relax . Students can get away from their problems and go back to class with a refreshed mind."

Not only do these games give students a breather from studies, but they provide a healthy chunk of money to the ASG .

According to Lopez, Pac-Man and his mechanical counterparts earn anywhere from $800 to a $1,000 a week. About SO% of that is profit for the ASG. All the quarters that are so feverishly dropped into the games are accounted for.

Each machine is meter regulated and Lopez makes a point of being on hand when the money is collected.

Serve-0-Mation is the company that we are currently dealing with," explains the soft-spoken ex-marine. "They give us complete service and have a pretty good business. Last year the company did about six million dollars."

The idea to enlist the aid of Frogger, Donkey Kong Jr. and Zaxxon to make money for the school belongs to Lopez.

"The video games were my idea . All we had was an old jukebox, and a pinball and cigarette machine . I approached the cafeteria manager and told him there was a chance to make some money. With the proper space and management I knew it would be profitable."

At this time, the big money maker is Donkey Kong Jr. . Game players claim that this is because it's such a hard game to beat.

Some went so far as to call it impossible.

Lopez agrees that it is a tough game."That's what makes it a money maker.

It's self-competitive. A student will come back again and again to challenge the machine until he overcomes and beats it."

Thus far he admits there hasn't been a game yet that can't be beat. Once a game has been defeated, its days in the game room are numbered. A machine that offers no challenge won't bring the player back for more.

"I have to place another competitive game in front of the individual so he will be eager to accept the new challenge." Lopez adds, "There are so many on the market that it is easy to trade with other businesses who have tired of their games."

With a shy smile the video man acknowledges that he plays the games. "In order to know what you've got it's necessary to play. Primarily because you want to have the best games out there for the students.

You won't know unless you try them."

The only real problems he has with the games is over-zealous challengers who kick and hit their computerized opponent. "Some students get a little emotional and take their frustrations out on the machine," says Lopez tactfully. He is quick to say, "Usually they are fairly good sports."

Students when questioned on what it was that brought them back day after day to the game room had basically the same answer.

They found it relaxing and a way to escape.

Perhaps one student summed it up best when he said, "I just can't help it. I'm addicted to the darn things."

NEWS Bravura offers chance for literary growth The Telescope, Tuesday, December 14, 1982

By Sarah Grimes In an age where most people prefer the zap of video games or the endless drone of cable TV, a few students are creating, compiling, and copyreading some good examples of student fiction, art and poetry.

The Bravura, Palomar's literary magazine, is a collaborative effort between students, teachers and ¡various departments on campus.

Although published by the English Department, the Photography, Art and Graphics Departments also contribute to the magazine.

Created by Dr. Theodore Kilman, Assistant Superintendent/ VicePresident, Instruction, this yearly periodical has evolved from a small pamphlet to a sophisticated literary magazine. Since 1964 it has provided an opportunity for students to showcase their works in a copyrighted publication.

Under the leadership of Gail Levin, this year's editor-in-chief,

The Bravura staff includes Bob Merriam, fiction editor; G?y Houghtaling, poetry editor; and Eileen Neglia, photography editor.

This is the first year a photography editor has been included on the staff.

Featuring art and photography alongside works of fiction and poetry, The Bravura has become an

attractive display of creative achievements.

Editor Levin suggests that "The illustrations have broadened the interpretive bas¡e of the magazine."

Although the format will remain basically the same as last year's editor, Levin plans a small change.

Instead of assigning someone to

illustrate a story, this year the Bravura staff will collect random art and photography and chose appropriate illustrations for a story.

"I'm taking the risk and saying it doesn't make any difference,"said Levin. "A great illustration can be put next to a piece of writing and they can still complement each other ~'

Annual Christmas concert set Palomar'¡s annual Christmas concert will be December 15 at 8 p.m. in the Palomar College Theatre.

This is the third concert of the season and presents seasonal music for orchestra and chorus, with the addition of carols to be sung by the audience with help from the choir.

The concert will end with several choruses from Handel's Messiah, including the Hallelujah Chorus, and members of the audience are invited to bring their own Messiah scores.

Other items on the program are Daniel Pinkham's short Christmas Cantata and excerpts from Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Carols.

The orchestra, conducted by David Chase, will perform Respighi's Trittico Botticelliano, three tone poems inspired by the sixteenth century painter and entitled, Spring, The Adoration of the Magi and the Birth of Venus.

"We have a variety of students who are enrolled (approximately 20) for a variety of reasons with many ability levels," says Carol Milsten, ROP Food Services Instructor.

According to Rinaldo Leydecker, 59, who is currently enrolled,"! was laid off work as a civil engineer/ draftsman. Instead of doing nothing at home, I keep myself busy here. I get the aggravation out of my system. I also enjoy the people I work with."

Chris Michaud, 21, says, "I have a full-time job at a convenience market. I am taking this class for personal experience and knowledge in hopes to become a chef or caterer."

Beverly Deberry, 28, wants to "learn all about restaurants and foods."

Tina Clifford, 19, says that "I am learning cashiering and have learned dishwashing and beverage serving. I want to cook somegay. I am progressing slow but sure." . Milsten points out that "Some students have had experience in food handling but want to improve techniques. People with special needs are also taking the class to learn job skills.

"Teaching the individual and dealing with each person as an individual is a major part of teaching the class.

"Our students go out better persons, because they learn much more than just foods. They learn to get along with other people, overcome shyness by handling clientele and personnel relationships, and relate to older persons."

In the class, they learn to plan, select, buy, and prepare foods in quantities through practical experience. They also learn cashiering, sanitation, food storage, table setting, commercial dishwashing and job interviewing techniques.

The practical experience is gained in a variety of ways. The students prepare and serve cafeteria lunches twice a week at the facility, every Tuesday at 11 a.m. and Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. "We are open to the public, but not many people know about it. We serve mostly to senior citizens who come for the social life and food that is reasonably priced," Milsten adds.

According to some of the customers, "The food is delicious. I am going to make it more often," says Barbra Harken, teacher at San Marcos High School. "Best thing that happened to senior citizens in a long time," Ray Hester emphasizes.

"The food is always great and it is always well prepared," stresses Catherine Marsh. fhe students also serve banquets and special luncheons, contract occasional catering assignments for pancake breakfasts at mobile home parks, and have bake sales.

"Selecting a variety of foods and menus that are nutritionally balanced is one purpose of the weekly 1unches. They are planned two weeks in advance. The food is selected for color, flavor, and texture. It is made attractive by the use of crinkle cutters, garnishes, and salad arrangements. The students also choose meals that senior citizens would not cook for themselves, such as chicken and dumplings or mexican dishes, " Milsten explains.

Another purpose is in preparation.

"We don't just unwrap frozen foods.

The students learn to cook and bake from scratch. They make pie crusts, sauces, and dressings. They also

learn how to prepare two or three fresh vegetables, fruit, entrees, and desserts at a time," according to Rosalie Brown, Milsten's " righthand woman." " Sanitation is another important part of the class. We stress handcare and hair-care, since hats or hair nets must be worn at all times.

Proper food storage is very important to avoid contamination. Also, if unused silverware is handled, it goes back in the dishwasher," Milsten emphasizes.

The ROP Food Services is an "open-end course. A student can enroll at any time. If a student gets a job two weeks before the course ends, credit towards a food handler's certificate will still be given because the object is to get a job."

Milsten also encourages students to "take four days of classes (ROP Food Services I and II) a week for the most benefit. Most of the students do, even though it is optional."

Once students have gained the knowledge and experience needed, they go on to work in hospitals, convalescent homes, restaurants, and schools. Many students will go on to start their own businesses."Over the last five years some are succeeding," Milsten adds.

Milsten gained most of her early experience from Pillsbury Mills in Minnesota as a food technologist in the test kitchen. While working there, she was selected to do handmodeling for prepared foods.

These hands, published in "La Rousse Gasronomique," a food authority book, seem to express a woman who possesses exceptional wit and humor , knowledge, patience, and the creativity to make ROP Food Services successful.

A student would select what he wants to hear and then a staff member will insert it into a speaker system which is located at the circulation desk. The system incorporates several channels, one of which may be set aside for continuous music playing.

The second floor is being planned exclusively for a loop antenna audio tour which will also make use of headphones.

Party goer dies during dance brawl Benjamin Rodriquez, 15, of Oceanside died from a stab wound to the chest on December 4, while attending a dance at the Barn, 149 San Marcos Blvd. The dance was sponsored by MEChA, a MexicanAmerican cultural club on campus.

A security guard at the dance said Rodriquez was stabbed inside the Barn, near the door of the men's restroom.

Although sponsored by an oncampus club, the dance was never approved by campus administrators.

"Generally, approval would go through the student activities office," said Dr. Omar Scheidt, Palomar president. "This dance did not."

The stabbing occured during a riot that broke out after two cars were stolen.

One security guard reported that several smaJl~ fights had started between rival gang members earlier in the evening . .Upon seeing the fights, the guard announced that the dance was over.

The band stopped playing and pleaded for order around midnight.

One last fight broke and Rodriquez was killed.

'Nutcracker director works for success

"The Nutcracker was first danced in 1892 by the Imperial Russian Ballet. Peter Tchaikovsky composed the music based on two tales, "The Nutcracker and the King ofMice" by E.T.A. Hoffman, and "The Nutcracker of Nuremberg," a French version by Alexander Dumas.

In directing "The Nutcracker," Keefer is well qualified. A long time North County resident, she also teaches ballet on campus.

Her experience in "The Nutcracker" dates back to 1971, when she performed six to seven performances a year for seven years with the California Ballet.

Although her experience with "The Nutcracker,' is extensive, she says, "My major role and favorite ballet was "Swanhilda,' in "Coppelia," which was reviewed as "performed nicely" by a San Diego Union critic.

But her performance as "Puck" in Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Starlight Bowl was considered by reviewers as "the best performance of the evening."

"Next to performing, I think I like teaching best," said the ballerina.

"It is a real joy to see a young dancer finally accomplish something she has been working on so hard. They enjoy it too."

After leaving the California Ballet for personal reasons, Keefer began her school of ballet in San Marcos in 1979, "Because dancing is what I know best and I wanted to teach ·proper ballet."

Since her school began, it has now reached its highest enrollment level, about 125 students. "It is not large compared to most ballet schools

Instructor dies Dr. Mario Guerrero, 34, instructor in the Multicultural and Social Sciences Departments, died recently in his sleep.

Described by coworkers as "vibrant and very interested in his students," Dr. Guerrero had taught on a part-time basis at Palomar College for several years.

He was the husband of Dr. Linda Guerrero, a regular faculty member in our Social Sciences Department.

2 Tbsp chili powder 1 lb. chorizo 5 lbs. fresh masa and 1 lb. of Masa Harina 1 112 lbs. of margarine or lard, softened salt Wash and remove silk from corn husks. Soak in hot water for at least one hour. Drain and set aside until needed. Do not allow them to dry.

Trim excess fat from meat and place in large pot, then cover with water. Add garlic. Simmer until tender, about 2 112 hours. Let cool.

Drain and save the broth. Debone the meat and shred or cube into small pieces. Set aside.

In another large pot, heat oil and gradually add flour, stirring constantly to prevent burning and lumping, until well blended. Add the tomato sauce and red chili sauce to this, sttrrmg constantly until thickened. Turn off the heat. Add meat. Fry chorizo, then drain fat and add to meat sauce. Add chili powder and salt to taste. Mix all these ingredients thoroughly. Let cool before using.

In a huge bowl, whip lard until fluffy, adding cold water until it will hold no more. Add the masa to lard and beat thoroughly. Add some of the meat broth until desired consistency is reached; dry enough to hold together and moist enough to spread easily. Theoretically, a small ban ofaough should rise in a glass of cold water.

TO make wrapping fun and less tedious, two or three persons would be ideal. In the palm of the hand hold the broadest of the husks and spread a thin layer of masa in the form of a square by using the back of a tablespoon. Put a large tablespoon of the meat mixture in the middle of the masa square. Roll the husk over the meat making sure the masa wraps around the meat also .

Wrapping or folding can be done in many ways. One way is to tie both ends of the husks with husk strings.

Another way is to fold the pointed end of the husk and set upright to prevent the meat sauce from oozing out. Another method is to fold over both ends of the husk. The point is to hold the mas a in and keep the steam out. Sometimes, an extra husk is needed when wrapping. Glue it together with a little masa.

To cook tamales, a canning kettle or steamer is used. Place a rack or pan in the bottom of the kettle to hold tamales above one inch of water used in steaming. On top of the rack, set a layer of husks or aluminum foil. Then, carefully stand the tamales on one end. Steam for at least one hour or until masa is firm. Allow tamales to set for a few minutes after cooking.

This recipe makes about 60 to 70 tamales, depending on their size.

Wrestlers claim South Coast Conference title Comets host Southern Regionals after league-clinching win over SD For the eighth time in 10 years the the league championship belongs to Palomar.

A 36-10 victory over San Diego City assured the Comets the first place position.

The Knights came to the dome December 3 tied with Palomar at identical records, 5-l. The Comets claimed the title by winning eight of the 10 dual meets.

Three victories were gained down by pins. Joe Ismay (134 pounds) took 6:50 to tag his opponent, Dave Vurik (177) won in 5:56 and Jeff Young (190) in 4:11.

Five decisions went to Palomar; Luis Loya (118) won 16-7, Ron Sigler (126) 11-8, Roger Sandate (150) 12-5, Frank Manly (158) 6-1, and Eric Ortega (heavyweight) 20-4.

Palomar hosted the Southern Regionals, which began last Friday. _The Comets, 9-1 overall, are listed as favorites a~d shoul4 improve 1981';;; second place finish. Eight teams hit the mats,.

Palomar has an edge, having defeated SCC participants Cerritos, Cypress, Golden West, San Diego City and Imperial Valley. Also competing will be El Camino and L.A. Pierce.

Coach John Woods now has a 10 year dual meet record of136-12-2 for a winning percentage of .906.

Cagers fifth in tourney; face Orange Coast After winning three out of four games to finish fifth in the Antelope Valley Tournament two weekends ago, the basketball team travels to Costa Mesa tomorrow to play Orange Coast.

Football team ends 'disappointing' year

By Mike Pedretti Concluding a disappointing and winless conference season, the football squad lost to Santa Ana November 23 to drop their final record to 0-6 in the Mission Conference and 2-8 overall.

For head coach Mario Mendez~ the year was especially frustrating, because the pre-season outlook for the team was bright.

"I was disappointed we didn't win more games," said the six year Comet coach. "It's too bad the season had to end that way because it was one of our best games in a long time."
