Candidates vie for offices April 7-9 MICHELLE MOREY -President
TRAVIS WIND EN-President
On April seventh, eighth and ninth there will be an important student election. I am seeking your vote for president of the Associated Student Government . I was fortunate to be elected to the position of legislator in October 1980 and have therefore had a good opportunity to become aware of student needs . I have been able to attend the meetings of the student legislature as well as those of the Faculty Senate and the Governing Board. The knowledge gained from this experience has qualified me to carry out the responsibilities of president . I have enjoyed participating in the activities of many campus organizations including: BSA, Honor Society, MEChA, Ski Club, Chamber Singers, Marketing Club, and UISA. Through this I have gained a better understanding of the needs of Palomar students . If elected I will work toward (1) Parking, traffic, lighting and security improvements. (2) Promotion of activities that allow more students to be involved in campus programs and to meet other students. (3) Promotion of support for and attendance at athletic events. (4) Better recognition of the needs of night and part-time students. (5) Increased fund raising and improved use of budget. (6) Making students more aware of the many campus clubs and the activities of student government. Please remember to vote so that your voice can be heard . Michelle Morey.
My fellow students, my name is TRAVIS WINDEN. I am running for Student Body President and I am looking forward to representing you as your Student Body President and to our great year ahead. ROLL OF STUDENT GOVERNMENT: One of the main purposes of student government in my opinion is to protect STUDENT'S RIGHTS, provide emergency loans, tutoring services, legal aid, peer counseling, support clubs and organizations and other like support services . I have a deep and abiding belief that an idea without a strong PLAN OF ACTION behind it, is an idea that will go stagnant and die on the vine, so I have set forth ideas with a GREAT PLAN OF ACTION to accomplish this; ideas that are looking out for my fellow students. (1) I strongly support campus clubs and organizations and shall assist club and organization officers in accomplishing their worthwhile goals. PLAN OF ACTION: I will keep in close contact with the Inter Club Council and with all the clubs and organizations on campus I shall be available for any assistance my office can give . I will build a working relationship in a positive direction. I will strive for a strong sense of club unity through cooperative activities . (2) I shall work toward an active and strong student government capable of securing the personal and educational rights of each and every student at Palomar College. I shall work to give the student government a high profile; one that is respected in the eyes of both students and administration. PLAN OF ACTION: To make a stronger student government, I shall work toward getting more students involved in student government. Together we can succeed in creating a cooperative spirit among ourselves and in our work with
EMILIO URIOSTE, JR.-President I would like to introduce myself and my reasons for seeking the goal of serving as ASG president . For too long now I have seen how students are dealt with at Palomar. The administration fails to give students top priority. I am tired, and I'm sure you are too, of being treated with indifference. We are people, not just another of 19,000 plus. For these reasons my goals are to cut the bureaucracy and redundancy out of the administration and the student government. Furthermore, because I am a student, students will be my first priority. I will do all within my power to make it very clear to the administration that they are a tool of the students and not the students a tool of the administration . I plan to make the ASG function smoothly - no more ad hoc committees investigating the ad hoc committee. I will fight for a budget that will continue to include the vital programs which affect all students: tutoring in all areas and free to all students, special counseling for veterans, women's programs, and financial assistance for all levels. I ask for your support and vote. For now is the time for Effective Progressive Leadership. Consider me when you vote, Emilio Urioste Jr. as your ASG president.
CHRIS ACEVEDO-President I believe that I am a hard worker. Since I have been a legislator, I have done many things that show that I have performed for you, the students . I started 'Palomar College Night' at the Distillery East. I initiated and coordinated this years' Homecoming and I have brought many bands on campus to play during lunch. Student issues are what concern me the most, such as, the parking problem, campus safety, and long lines at the bookstore. We also need big name bands to come and perform for us here on campus. If I am elected as your ASG president, I will get these issues resolved and passed if you are really sincere about the career that you are pursuing, and if you are getting upset about certain problems and want action, then please remember me, Chris Acevedo, when you vote .
CRAIG CARRIER-President My name is Craig Carrier and I am running for the office of ASG president. I want to make your experience here at
Palomar one that will be remembered, and the only way to do that is to get you involved in activities and the proceedings here on campus. School gets boring if you just come for two or three classes a day, then go home and either go to sleep or to a job. When elected I will get activities for you to do such as, 'get acquainted week' 'get to know your student government,' and have contests between clubs and groups. I will set aside time each day when you can come in and talk with me and tell me your suggestions or complaints . I would keep the students of Palomar in mind all the time. So remember, if you want more student involvement, put your 'X' by Craig Carrier.
LINDA JOHANSEN-Vice President Elections for ASG are coming up on April 7, 8, and 9, 1981. I feel that your vote is very
important. Each individual who votes make our Associated Student Government more representative of the students . I will be running for vice-president. You may ask, 'why vote'? As a legislator, I have seen many important issues dealt with Associated Student Government. One such issue is the new drop policy, which will take effect next fall. This type of issue needs good representation by the students. A very important part of this job is working with the lnterclub Council which represents clubs on campus. As vicepresident, I will be committed to work with ICC. I have been working with ICC which is responsible for the Mayfair, a very important aspect in recognition for Palomar College. I will be looking forward to working on the Mayfair as the vice-president. I have worked in ASG for the past year and feel confident that I will do a good job. Other issues I support are: more variety of student entertainment, speakers from different fields, and better ASG card benefits . I would appreciate your confidence and vote, Linda Johansen.

My interest and concern for the affairs of student government are vital to the welfare and prosperity of this community college. I will take an active part in student government. I will give full support and cooperation to the students, faculty and staff of Palomar College. I will be working for a better student recognition and I will be a voice of all students. I am working on a certificate in the field of gerontology and bilingual/bicultural studies. Currently I am carrying 12 units. Palomar College has to make significant changes in the future. The administration has to listen to student recommendations because, after all, the staff and the faculty of this college are employed for the benefit of all students, and only the students. Karl G. 'Unethical' campaigning Although publicity plays a large part in any election, no candidate should be elected on name recognition alone. I feel that certain efforts to inundate the student body with expensive flyers, name cards and picture posters is unethical and is making a mockery of an otherwise honorable ASG presidential election. We are intelligent enough to recognize the difference between sincere election platforms and media hype and we should be able to vote accordingly. - Dale Haines
administration . I shall work for greater publicity coverage of campus activities in order to keep students, faculty, administration and our greater community aware of our outstanding campus activities and accomplishments . (3) I shall be available to students to share ideas about any campus programs or activities and to discuss issues and work toward solutions. PLAN OF ACTION: I will keep posted office hours and be available to students ... my door will swing both ways and no one will be denied an appointment. I welcome all, my door will always be open. Students wishing to become involved in student activities and individual suggestions will be presented to the legislature .
