Editorials

Drivers need to slow down

By Karen Ossenfort Drivers on campus rarely pay any courtesies to pedestrians trying to cross the perimeter road.

Oftentimes I have stood on the curb watching 20 cars whiz by me all in a matter of 20 seconds. Finally, some kind soul sees the terror stricken expression on my face and comes to a stop allowing rile to cross.

The speed limit on this campus is 15 mph and most people are doing close to 35 mph. There are also numerous lights designating crosswalks and stop signs that are being virtually ignored.

The periodic patrolling of deputies from the Vista Sheriffs station is needed to control the excess speeds and to possibly aid in pedestrian safety.

There has already been one death in a campus related accident this year.

Need there be more?

Injuries and near misses have also been reported. When is it going to stop?

For the safety of the members of this community- drivers please slow down and acknowledge the stop signs, lights and pedestrians.

'Is There a Santa Claus?'

That question was answered 60 years ago when a little girl of 8 queried the editor of theN ew York Sun. His reply became a Yuletide classic, reprinted annually in papers throughout the nation: Here is the little girl's letter: Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, 'If you seeitin the Sun it's so.' Please tell me the truth. Is there a Santa Claus?

VIRGINIA O'HANLON Following is the reply she received- an editorial from the New York Sun. The Telescope joins other newspapers across the nation in reprinting it to usher in the holidays.

DEAR VIRGINIA: Virginia; your little friends are wrong. They have been affecte~ by the skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They thmk that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little.

In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.

Alas! How dreary would be the world ifthere were no Santa Claus.

It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight.

The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove?

Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign there is no Santa Claus.

The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that does not prove that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart.

Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance can push as~de that curtain and view and picture the supernatural beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousands years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

It was a bitter cold night again. "It must be winter," thought the not-soyoung man as he stumbled across the dirty city pavement- his crusty home.

Winter didn't mean much more to him than deciding if he was numb from the exterior elements or from the alcohol in his interior. But before he could debate the issue, his sloshed brain had forgotten what he was thinking about.

It was a chilly night as Mr. Ben Daniels bustled his children and wife out of their cozy, warm house into the family station wagon.

They were off to get a Christmas tree.

"It would be fun for the kids deciding which pine-scented tree to get," thought Mr. Daniels.

"Where am I?" asked the derelict of himself, as he scratched his head and pulled at his filthy hair. Frustrated at his inability to answer the question, he did what he always did, forgot it and took another swig from his cheap bottle of wine.

The children squealed with delight as Mr . Daniels loaded their newlypurchased tree into the station wagon. He would have to leave the tail-gate down for the tree was too long to carry otherwise.

As he slid it in the back, Mr. Daniels heard a crack. One of the branches was caught. He would have to be more careful.

The wind whipped and swirled the trash that littered streets as the bum sat down in the doorway of a old, brokendown building. After another swig, he spied somthing red and white in a little plastic wrapping. Whatever it was, it was broken.

He picked it up and made his way off on

a lonely, uncharted course through an ocean of blackness and garbage.

Mr. Daniels drove at 50 mph as the car sped across an over-pass. "I wonder what the people who have to live down there in this seamy part of town do to celebrate Christmas?" he thought. He soon forgot the question as agustofwindrushedpast the car and the pre-cracked tree branch broke off and flew over the side of the bridge.

The wino was staggering out from under the over-pass when he was hit in the head by something. He jumped back startled. "What was that?" he asked himself.

He sat down and picked up the object. " A branch," he stated almost triumphantly. And by an old reflex he put the branch to his nose to smell it. It brought him a scent he hadn't smelled in years. Suddenly, his weary eyes became teary eyes.

The tree was up and now the children happily adorned it with beautiful bulbs and shiny tinsel. Mr. Daniels leaned back "The tree looks lop-sided," he thought. No matter, he was content and pleased.

Christmas was truly his favorite holiday.

"Christmas," exclaimed the wino. He sat on the curb in a stupor. He ran his fingers across the needles. Then he placed the stem into his bottle of wine. Then he took out the smashed candy cane he had picked up and hung it on one of the branch's branches.

One more tear ran its course down the scarred and beaten-up face and fell to the asphalt. Christmas was truly his favorite holiday.

Julian provides_ Christmas retreat

For those of you who are homesick for a white Christmas, tired of tract houses with no fireplaces for St. Nick to descend, and the perpetual beach bums who refuse to remove their shorts even for December, there is respite.

Julian, a quiet community nestled in the Laguna mountains near Cuyamaca, offers a wonderful chance to escape the newness of North County into the mood of Christmases past.

The Christmas Arts Festival in the old Town Hall gave local artists a chance to display this year's carefully made jewelry, wood carvings, and Christmas decorations. It left the visitor with a warm feeling ofwhatitmusthave been to sit by a wood-burning stove and create Christmas with your hands instead of buying it.

I guess really it's the romantic who get more out of Julian. The town has seen a lot of Christmases, and a feeling of the stability of traditions leaves visitors reminiscing.

The Julian Library should not be

missed. A converted schoolhouse, oldtime student desks still remind one of pigtails and schoolmarms. The building is lovely unto itself.

Take a friend to poke through the funny shops that lure with antiques, collectables, and just enough "tourista junque" to remind you that it's 1978.

Though there was no snow the first weekend in December, the cool temperatures forced people into mittens and hats, and even some scarves, though some die-hards hung onto their Bermudas and sundresses.

The soda fountain at the drug store offered malts and phosphates, and out-ofthis world banana splits at a reasonable price.

The West Coast converts who think they've become used to picnics on Christmas may be surprised at how much they miss wintery Christmas when they visit .

Julian. The admittedly homesick Northerners will thoroughly enjoy the uncharacteristic Southern California cool. Don't forget to take a friend.

In the report from the Safety Committee, the legislature heard that a petition was presented to that committee with over 160 signatures requesting that the North County buses return to the practice of pulling onto the campus grounds to discharge and pick up passengers.

The petition was fowarded to Dr. Omar Scheidt, Palomar president, who will draft a letter to Mr. John J ontig, executive director of the North County Transit District, relating that request.

Also the legislature was informed that approximatly 30% ofthe drivers using the perimeter road are not stopping at the red flashing lights.

Possible means to correct this situation were discussed and included the reinstallation of speed bumbs at the stop sign locations.

Bruce Robbins, ASG president, reported that the plans for renovation of the Student Union have been approved by the Governing Board and have been placed open for bids.

Exchange teacher enjoyed Palomar; readies to leave Columb us College in Columbus, Georgia, is almost three thousand miles away from Palomar, but exchange instructor Dr. Craig Lloyd says, "There's no great difference between the two."

Lloyd, wh o is here for most of the semester, is taking Dr. Joseph Gordon's spot in the Social Science Department as Gordon takes his at the four-year Georgia school.

This trading of positions wasn't part of any formal program, but was a happen-chance event where both professors got in contact with each other and their respective colleges approved the switch. Columbus pays Lloyd while Palomar pays Gordon.

Since t here is no sabbatical leave program at Columbus as here, this exch ange was a goc opportunity for Lloyd to get away lvr awhile and travel and teach at the same time.

Dr. Lloyd originally comes from Illinois. He went to Middlebury Coll ege in Vermont for his BA degree and then earned his MA and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.

He went to Georgia in 1971 because of the job market there.

Lloyd, wh o has been teaching U.S. History 7 and 8, did find some minor differences betw een the two educational centers. One is that Palom ar's learning resources, like

"This semester we are finding that the driv ers are again ignoring the speed limit and the li g hts. To enforce the laws , I've notifi ed the Vista Sheriffs station who will be periodically sending deputies to patrol the campus and issue tickets to violators.

"The whol e concept is sa fety on campus," Dr. Scheidt con cludes , "People need to slow down and be more careful of pedestrians. " The same rules apply on campus as well as off."

By Jim Duffy Gene M. Ja ckson , dean of student affairs, was appointed acting Dean of Instruction of Humanities by th e Governing Board at last night's meeting.

His a ppointment , effective J anurary 2, will be active until Ju ly 1 when a perman ent appointment will be made, according to Dr. Omar Scheidt, college president.

Jackson is accepting the position after serving four years as Dean of Student Affairs. He has been chairman of the English Department, and Department C h airman ofMu li tcultural Studies, and is a member of many governance committees on campus.

Beginning his studies at the University of Idaho, Jackson graduated from San Diego State University. He earned his Masters in English a nd American Literature from Claremont Co llege, and previously taught at Mira Costa and the College of th e Sequoias in Visalia, coming to Palomar in 1965.

Jackson said he ca m e to Palomar" ... in the first place because it had an unusual amount of respect in humanities." He cited the Boehm Gallary as an example of a humaniti es effort that h as ea rn ed that respect.

"I want to continue with that tradition," h e said, spea king of future plans for the hum a nities department.

He said he is planning to apply for the perman ent appointment which was announced by Dr. Scheidt this week.

According to Scheidt, a n "open search" will take place to find the

best qualified person to fi ll the permanent slot.

Governing Board regu lations set the procedure for that search and requires general notice to be made on campus as wel l as to various outside agencies.

All candidates will be screened by two different committees th a t wi ll submit its top three choices for the job. Dr. Scheidt will interview each ca ndid ate a nd then mak e his recom mend ation to the Govern ing Board.

The interviewing is supposed to begin around February 19 with th e a ppointment to be made in July .

Lack of audience close s production's opening night

However, du e to m a ny reasons such as an early dea dline and especially. the lack of an audience on opening night, December 7, this won't be.

"What would happen if they gave a play and nobody showed up?" was the question actress, Ellie Goolkasian asked that Thursday night in the Drama lab, P-33.

The answer, to director Buddy Ashbrook, was to cancel the performance and hope that people would show up on the next two nights.

It didn't take a physician to diagnose that a case of severe heartbreak had hit everyone involved in the production.

Myself being half of the total a udien ce is an amusing thought, but it does have a depressing undercurrent. Just being in the same room with 14 or 15 people who have worked, sweated and possibly even bled for a show for more than a month, getting a ll geared up for the big night only to have a critic a nd his sister show up is, to say the least, sad.

Another possibility. So many folks are glued to their TV sets and aren 't wise enough to go out a nd enjoy some live entertainment every once in awhi le.

The faculty a nd student body? This might have some solid ground.

Ashbrook says " . .. if we had to depend on students and instructors coming to see the shows, this would happen every night." With over 250 faculty members and 14,000 students, it's a pretty bad reflection of the Palomar College Campus .

The cold weather? Seems to be the big a nswer to Ashbrook and David Boyd why there was a sparse crowd .

The cancellation of opening night had to be a nightmare experience for the three actors, Michael J .

Fredericksen, Ellie Goolkasian and Darnell Lathan.

Fredericksen , the most experienced of the three, seemed to take it all in stride. However, the disappointment was obvious on the faces of Lathan and Miss Goolkasian. This is Lathan's first role ever in a play and only Goolkasian's second.

But they all knew, from actors to technical people to house managers, that the Theatre is a heart-breaking love, profession and hobby. So they made jokes of how the cast out n urn be red the audience. They had to laugh or else they would cry.

By the time most of you have read this, Slow Dance on the Killing Ground will have just three performances left, scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. If you can't think of anything better to do, why not come out and see a play. They are't doing it for the money, they're doing it for love. A play isn't a play without an audience. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. with ticket prices set at $3- general admission and $2 for students and Gold Card holders.

Wrestlers defend state title Returnees boost Comet opes

That is the task facing John Woods, who is entering his sixth year as the head coach for the Palomar College wrestling team. In his five years at the helm of the Comets, Woods has transformed the Palomar wrestling program into the class of California junior college wrestling.

Palomar won it all last year, taking the state dual-match title, the state tournament title, and sporting two individual state champions in Edwin Dilbeck (118 pounds) and Chris Cain (134 pounds).

But Woods, whose dual-match record at Palomar going into the 1978-79 season is a phenomenal 804-1, is hoping that his present Comet squad can be even more powerful than last season's champs. The main reasons are the return of Cain at 134 plus six other sophomores from last season and the influx of an outstanding group of freshmen.

Woods, who was a National College Division champion at 167 pounds when he wrestled at Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo), coached the Orange Glen High School wrestling squad before coming to Palomar in 1973, and since turning the Patriot program into one of San Diego County's best, Woods' seasonal accomplishments at Palomar have gone as follows: 1973-7 4 - Mission Conference champions 1974-75- N urn her One ranking in state dual-match poll; sixth in state tournament 1975-76- Second in dual-match tournament; fifth in state tournament 1976-77 Dual-match championship over Cha bot; third in state tourna ment 1977-78 - State dual-match and tournament championships Woods has lost a lot of talent from last year's squad, which went undefeated through 16 dual-matches, won three tournaments a nd placed second in a nother tourney. Cagers lose to Tigers: open against Rio Hondo Despite strong performances from freshman Leo Lang and Doug Sanders, Palomar dropped its second basketball game in five outings when the Comets were defeated 8174 by Riverside December 1.

Coach Andy Gilmour's squad will open their 1978-79 home sea son December 19 against Rio Hondo at 7:30p.m.

Riverside jumped out to early leads of 18-6 a nd 22-7 before the Comets narrowed the lead to 42-35 at the half.

Palomar rebounded when guard I van "Scrappy" Hamilton canned a 15 foot jumpshot tyin g the game 4949. Duane Gatson then r eceived a pass from Hamilton and layed it in, putting the locals ahead 51-49.

However, River side's Tigers clawed their way back and took wha t seem ed to be a rather commanding lead a t 70-58, but Long drilled four shots home to pull P a lom ar within four points 78-74. However , it was too la te.

Lang' s 14 points and S anders' 13 points led the Comet scoring attack.

Led by 6'8" center Mike Babin and a well-balanced attack, Palomar rolled to a 81-69 triumph over West Hills November 30.

After seesaw action in the first half which ended with the Comets clinging to a 29-28 lead, Babin got things started when he caused West Hills center Allen Adney to foul out.

He then proceeded to score five points and rip down four rebounds in the first two minutes as the cagers reeled off eleven consecutive points in the second half.

Gatson, who was the game's top scorer with 22, added to the Comet explosion by hitting his first five shots as th ey coasted to a n easy win .

FARLEY NAMED ALL-AMERICAN

Rounding out the scoring was Babin with 16, Tatum 12, and Ricky Boles, 10. Babin also pulled nine carries to lead all rebounders.

One night earlier , the Comets suffered their first loss of th e year to P ierce College 65-54. Gatson and Hamilton each had ten points for P alomar.

Mermen end successful season

By Bob Hillerman All good things must come to an end. For the Comet poloists the good thing was their 1978 waterpolo season.

Chamberlain takes all-league After waiting a week because of a r ainout, the women' s field hockey team took on a powerful Fullerton team last month.

Things did not turn out well for the Comets as they finished the season losing 5-0. The defeat gave the team a 6-5-1 conference record.

Looking for a bright spot after the

loss, Coach Vi J effery felt that Janis Matero played very well. Also, Palomar's Barbie Chamberlain headed selections for the allconference team.

Also honored were Rita Ferral who was named to the AllConference second team and Caren Hayek and Michelle Lisi who made honorable mention.

Ending the year with a 23-6 record, the locals tied with Cerritos for the fifth spot in the southern California Tournament with a 1-2 record at Golden West, November 20-21.

"We played better than we anticipated we would," said coach Don Hubbard. "I'm very pleased with the way our team played and the way they jelled together as a team."

Winning their third straight conference title, the Comets dominated everyone in the Mission Conference.

This was evident with the game scores as lopsided as they were.

It was also true when six players were picked for the All-Conference team. Sophomores Paul Farley, Jim Delpy and Bill Curtis were named to the team. This was Farley's second consecutive year on the tea m.

Freshmen John Thomson, Roland Elkins and goalie Roger Nijinski joined the other three sophomores on the team.

158 - Kerry Hiatt, another top freshma n from Poway, will wrestle at 158 after winning the SDCIF two years straight at 154 pounds.

Another freshman , Randy Roberts, placed third in the CIF, Southern Section at 154 while wrestling at Dana Hills High.

168 - Another Poway standout, Kevin Woods, will be the leader here a fter winning the SDCIF crown at 167 last year. Freshman Greg Grippo provides the back-up after wrestling at Mt. Carmel la st season.

177 Vista High's Bobby Welnick lea ds this division after ea rning a bitter third place at the SDCIF tourn ey la st year. Bitter beca use Welnick was disqualified from the title match on a disputed decision while he was leading his opponent, 10-0. He lost only two m a tches all last season .

190 - Jim Daris , a onetime CIF pl acewinner from Ocea nside High, has transferred from MiraCosta JC and will wrestle for Palomar at 190.

Hwt. - Ernie Yelton will get the nod here after transferring from Cal 142 Bryan Canada, who P oly (SLO). Yelton (6-3,240) won the wrestled for Palomar two years a go h eavyweigh t division two years a go but sat out last season with an in the SDCIF tourney, and then injury, is back to lead this division. went on to place third in the state A talented group of freshmen a t 142 tournament while wrestling for pounds includes Kris Lynds (Mis- Helix High. sion Bay High) , Kevin Mehrtens Woods will be a ssisted again this (Mt. Jeff Gianni, a third-place finisher in state last season, has graduated to Nevada-Las Vegas, and the Pacific 10 Conference has nabbed two standouts in John Davis (Arizona State) and Dave Clissold (UCLA).

But despite those losses and that of Joe Thurmond to WeberState, the Comets are expected to put up a strong defense oftheir title. Here, by weight, are the key people Woods hopes will bring another title to Palomar: 118 - Dilbeck is gone, but his back-up from last year, Joe Pascetti, returns after prepping at El Camino High. Pascetti is joined in this division by returning sophomore Jerry Smith, and freshman Greg Hucks, asecond-placefinisherin the SDCIF Tournament last year while wrestling for Torrey Pines High at 103 pounds.

126 - Jim Hamilton, the returning sophomore who placed seventh in the state last year, returns to lead this division, and h e will be backed up by returning sophomore Joe Burns.

134 - Cain is back and he has a good chance to repeat as the sta te champion. He will be backed by a pair of freshmen, Mike Grosberg, who was a third-place finisher in the CIF, Northern Section Tournament last season at 120 pounds while wrestling at Orland High, and Bill Mullett, who is a prospect out of Poway High, always-powerful where he placed third in SDCIF at 137 last year.

· · Entering the two-day, doubleelimination tourney , the locals would face number five ranked Cerritos in their first match. In the midst of a steady downpour the locals were defeated 9-B. The Comets took a 3-2 halftime lead with the help of sophomore Bill Curtis who scored all three goals.

earlier in the season 13-12, came back and tallied six different times in the third period and never lost the lead. Bill Macy, Elkin s a nd Thom son tallied once each to fin a lize th e Comet scoring.

Needing a win desperately the Comets then faced Riverside City.

Earlier in the season the locals downed Riverside 17-11 in the highest production game of the year.

Farley, Delpy and Elkins pa ced Palomar to a 8-6 victory with two goals ea ch . Riverside was coming off a loss to host team Golden West.

Long Beach was the next opponent for the Comets in their third and last match and the Vikings downed the locals 10-8.

Elkins, Curtis and Pete Schmidt each tallied twice while Thom son and Macy added one each. Goalie Nijinski had nine saves in 19 attempts. " It was a close game. I thought we were in it all the way," stated Hubbard. " We would close the gap, then they would pull away."

Golden West finished the tourney in first place, with Fullerton finishing second, Ventura third , Long Beach fourth , Cerritos and .Palomar tying for fifth .

Curtis led the team with six goals in the two-day tourney. Elkins tallied five times whileMacy, Thomson, Farley, Delpy and Schmidt scored twice w bile Allen scored once. " We're going to lose a lot of people this year," commented Hubbard.

"The fate of next year's team relies a lot on the high school recruiting. It's going to hurt with only five schools to recruit from ."

PAUL FARLEY Paul Farley, Comet waterpolo star, h as been named to the Community College All-American team, announced Tom Hermstead, chairman of the All-Am erican Selection Committee.

Farley, a sophomore, joins a select list. Only two oth er Comets, Ted Cole in 1972 and Paul Hubbard, 1977, have earned t he honor.

Sophomore Bill Curtis was named to the All-Southern California and the All-Mission Conference teams .

Six locals in all received AllConference honors. In addition to Farley and Curtis were sophomore Jim Delpy and freshmen Roland Elkins, J ohn Thomson and Roger Nijinski.

Program offers USC students scholarships Students at the University of Southern California are sponsoring a financial aid fund for low-income, community-minded people bound for that school.

The Norman Topping Student Aid Fund is a "student-instigated, student-governed, and studentfunded financial aid program," according to staffers, named for retired USC president, Dr. Norman Topping.

Money is acquired via an $8 annu al student fee and resources from USC associates.

The fund h elps about 20 students with coll ege costs up to full tuition gra nts eac h year, and are gua ran teed through graduation. " Award recipients must be willing to volunteer 20 hours per semester in some worthy community or school service," a nd have at least a 2.5 grade point average in previous academic work.

'I like hats' proclaims east coast 'Phil hatter'

By Richard Medugno Not everyone knows his name, but L. Barry Wood is known by an alias to a lot of people: The Hat Man. Wood is rarely ever seen without one a top his head. The reason? Wood says it plain and simply, "I like hats." He is originally from the East Coas t, Philadelphia to be exact.

"There, it's more common for men to wear hats," he states.

The 55-year old "philhatter" (hat lover) is a student here. He started attending classes when h e retired to Fallbrook after serving 32 years in the U.S. Navy. He says h e decided to go back to school to keep himself alert and his mind active.

His long stint with the Navy enforced his habit of wearing hats, because "You always are wearing a hat in the military."

Wood has a pretty good collection of headdresses, enough that h e could wear one every day for two weeks and it wouldn't be the same one. He says the h ats are of many colors from maroon to white to blue to brown.

"I'm con scio us of being color coordi nated. Some h ats will go with a nything you wear and others won't.

"I g uess I am kind of an oddity on campus. People in Southern California are so casual. They don't dress up as much."

What is the possibility of h ats catching on? Wood shakes his h ead a nd says, "I don't think so." Well, m aybe it's for the best because if everyone wore a h at then L. Barry Wood wouldn't be the "Hat Man" anymore.

And without a "Hat Man," what would Robin do?

Instructor recommends logic course

According to Seech, "Everyone can use Introduction to Logic. It gives you a way to analyze a ll the simple, everyday messages yo u receive. It enables people to put their finger on what is bothering them abo ut ads and speeches, and pinpoint th e little thin gs that make something less convincing."

Morales claim s that she was driving her ca r down the perimeter road in the right ha nd lane a nd was sideswiped on the left as Langkabel attempted to p ass her. Mora les says that after being sideswiped she tried to apply her brakes, however they fail ed her.

She says that she tried to pull ovl' r to th e side of the road a nd in doing so hit th e parked Volkswagon and also Langkabel's car on the passenger's side.

There were no injuries to either driver.
