Art and Craft

Grade 5

Preface

Art and craft has always been at the heart of joyful learning. For children, these are more than activities on paper—they are ways of observing, imagining and expressing. Each brush stroke, fold or cut is an act of discovery, one that builds confidence, patience and the delight of creating something unique.

Mosaic has been developed in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2022–23, with the belief that art and craft is not a mere leisure pursuit, but a meaningful experience that enriches learning. By engaging with materials, colours, textures and forms, learners nurture imagination while also strengthening essential skills such as focus, coordination, problem-solving and fine motor skills like cutting, folding and drawing.

A clear progression runs through the series. Activities begin with simple techniques that introduce children to basic forms and materials, and gradually lead to more complex tasks where skills are combined, refined and applied in new ways. Each step builds on the last, ensuring that children grow in confidence while also developing an appreciation for both process and product. As children move from simple explorations to more refined creations, they begin to experience art not only as a source of joy but also as a practice that values skill, care and originality.

Mosaic reflects the spirit of the NEP by emphasising hands-on learning, integration with other subjects and meaningful connections with life. It nurtures artistic growth alongside broader dimensions of development such as health and well-being, sustainable living and social-emotional learning, while also building 21st-century skills such as creativity, critical thinking and communication. By engaging with Indian art forms, cultural traditions and contemporary techniques, learners connect with their heritage even as they explore new ideas and materials. Whether making a small decorative item, creating with recycled materials or experimenting with colours and textures, children develop not only creative expression but also the values of curiosity, empathy and respect for their environment and culture.

To support this process, Mosaic offers step-by-step guidance, scaffolded image sequences and digital resources that make every task easy to follow while still leaving space for personal creativity. With clear instructions, visual support and engaging demonstrations, the programme ensures that classrooms can bring art to life in ways that are both accessible and inspiring. These digital resources are provided free of cost, to ensure a seamless and holistic learning experience for children.

Above all, this series is grounded in the belief that art is a joyful journey. It invites learners to explore, to create and to express themselves freely, while developing skills that will remain with them for life. We extend our warmest wishes to educators, parents and learners as they embark on this creative journey.
