Lockwood Schools Host Meeting On Possible 4-Day School Week By Bob Jackson Correspondent

The Lockwood school adminstration and school board held a second public meeting on Sunday January 18, 2015, at the high school library to receive public input from school patrons on a proposed plan to go to a 4day school week in school year 2015-2016. Over 40 parents, grandparents, teachers and others were at the informational meeting. The first meeting was January 15, 2015. A flyer had been sent home to parents of all students in the district. The proposal was brought about by the decreased funding for rural schools by the State of Missouri, drop in enrollment and new educational requirements from DESE. Adminstrators at Lockwood explained that no decision has been reached but explained the pros and cons of the issue. Reasons To Go To 4-Day Week 1. Savings of money from utility costs, transportion costs of fewer bus trips, less substitute teacher, less cost of non certified staff. 2. No decrease in student achievement.

About forty showed up for the informational meeting about going to a 4-day school week in Lockwood.

3. Increase in attendance. 4. Teacher morale and work satisfaction improvement and retention of quality teachers.

Questions from parents were: 1. Longer school days harder on children grades 1 thru 3. 2. Will bus rides be longer? 3. What about child care on Mondays? 4. Why are rural schools not funded from the state like bigger schools? The 4-day school week is one option that Lockwood is looking at with other options being dropping programs on the educational side, dropping some athletic programs, asking for a property tax increase or

consolidating with neighboring school districts. The Everton, Missouri, school district is in its second year of a 4-day school week and school patrons have accepted the change. The Miller, Missouri, school district is exploring the idea and will be hosting a public meeting on the idea tonight Thursday January 22, 2015. Another area school, Pierce City has had public meetings on the issue and may vote this month on the issue. The Lockwood school adminstration and school board welcome your input into this change. Comments, questions and concerns should be addressed to Bill Rogers, Superintendent of
