LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT February 12, 2015 – Officer Brad Bazarow was dispatched to Cormier Rice Mill for a report of a parking lot accident. Upon arrival he spoke to Phillip Peters. Peters stated that he was parked waiting on a lane to open when another truck, driven by Stephon Brooks, backed into his truck causing damage to the driver side mirror. Damage was estimated at $100.00 and pictures were taken of damage. February 13, 2015 – Officer Johnathan Powell was dispatched to the home of Velma Baker because Danny Roberts was trespassing again. He knew that Roberts is not allowed at Baker’s house, and that he has been informed as such on numerous occasions, including from an arrest earlier that day. Upon arrival, Baker told the officer, “Please get him out of here.” Powell entered the house, escorted Roberts out, and placed him under arrest for criminal trespass. February 14, 2015 – Officer Billy Truax responded to 119 Jefferson Street in reference to the Suspect needing to speak to an officer. Upon arrival, Truax was met by the Suspect’s wife. She advised that upon returning home from shopping, her children were left outside unattended, and the Suspect was not at home. She stated that she had left the children in the care of the Suspect while she went to the store. She then stated that she told the Suspect that she was going to call the Police and report him if he did this again. The Suspect then called the Police himself. Truax then asked the Suspect if he had left the children unattended, (oldest child is six, and other is four) and left the residence. The Suspect stated “Yes, I was looking for my wife.” Officer Truax advised the Suspect that this was illegal, and wrong of him to do. The Suspect then stated “Well do your job and arrest me.” As Truax was talking to the Suspect, he noticed a very strong odor of intoxicants about him. The Suspect then repeated the story that he left the children at home so he could search for his wife. He then asked the Suspect why didn’t he take the children with him to search for his wife? The Suspect stated “Because I had been drinking, and they didn’t need to be with me.” Truax then asked how much he had to drink. The Suspect answered “four or five beers, I drink every day.” Truax then advised the Suspect to enter his residence, and that he did not need to be outside. He also advised the Suspect that he was not to leave the children unattended again. The Suspect continued to argue about why he left them. Truax advised the Suspect that there was no excuse to leave the children, and to go inside. This was done several times. The Suspect refused and continued to argue. The Suspect was identified as Jose Martin Barajas Chavez. He was placed in handcuffs, and transported to the Arkansas County Detention Center and charged with Public Intoxication. February 14, 2015 – Patrol Officer Jennifer Crossett was driving on North Cedar when she noticed a vehicle in the ditch on East 1st Street. She approached the vehicle to find Eddie Porter trying to get out of the ditch. Porter stated he had pulled into the driveway to turn around and accidently backed off into the ditch.

Reverend Charles E. Banks, Sr. shared his story of a troubled past to the students of DeWitt High School Thursday, February 19th. Charles is from Stuttgart, AR, the second oldest of five boys. He graduated from high school in 1985 and attended the University of Arkansas in Jonesboro. Charles ended up not graduating college and began working for a carpet installer in Stuttgart, which didn’t work out, and later began selling drugs. Through his drug activity, he became friends with the leader of the Original Gangster Crips (O.G.C.) of Little Rock, Leifel Jackson, and was initiated into the gang. Charles then began selling cocaine, crack, and methamphetamines. Charles sold drugs and distributed them throughout the states before being arrested and going to prison for 10 years.

After leaving prison, Charles started to work volunteering for the American Red Cross in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina, and later moved up the ranks as a Director of Emergency Services. As his life went on, he became the founder and Pastor of Fellowship Full Gospel Ministries in Lafayette, Louisiana. Charles, also the Director of Drug and Gang Awareness Prevention Program, now shares his life experiences, trials, and tribulations with the youth and tries to persuade them to not make the same bad choices he made in his life. The Drug and Gang Awareness Program, Inc. (D’GAPP) was created to impact the lives of youth and enables them to succeed in life, and offers input from former gang members, city and state leaders and officials, and other speakers. county needed this insurance for inmates. “At times I think we do, and at times I think we don’t. It’s hard to say,” Cheek said. “Is it costing us more money? Yeah, it’s going to cost us a little bit more, but the bottom line, where it is really going to save us, is that they are taking on the responsibility of any lawsuits. They are relieving Arkansas County of the burden should something arise,” he further explained. Cheek told court members that he talked with Southern Health Partners, who the county has previously had a contract with before, but he did not get a chance to talk to other healthcare providers at a recent conference he attended. The Court decided to maintain the detention center’s current health insurance for another month and to continue searching for other health providers in the meantime. In a matter of new business, the Court approved an ordinance amending the county road budget to include two assistant road foremen positions. Arkansas County Judge Eddie Best explained that these two positions would not require additional employees. “We are not making more positions. We are just taking two of the [current] machine operators and making two positions as assistant road foremen,” Best said. “They take on a lot of responsibility when the road foreman is not there,” he further explained. He clarified that this salary increase for these two employees would now allow them to be compensated for a role they are already currently fulfilling. In another matter of new business, court members considered and approved an appropriation ordinance in the amount of $25,973.56 for the Game and Fish Education Fund budget. “These are special funds that we receive, and we disperse to each school district [in the county],” Best said. The funds are equally divided between the Stuttgart and DeWitt school districts for programs like Hunter Education Best clarified. In other action taken, the Court approved a motion to accept the 2013 legislative audit final reports. The Court also approved a resolution declaring a vacancy for a justice of the peace position in District 9. The position is open since former Justice of the Peace Kirk Meins moved to another district.

DeWitt Bowlers Qualify for State By Dawn Teer

February Quorum Court Meeting By Terrye Seamon The Arkansas County Quorum Court met February 10 at the Arkansas County Courthouse in DeWitt. Members of the Grand Prairie Genealogy Society were on hand to present $500 to the Records Preservation and Restoration Committee for the purpose of continuing their restoration of county records. Sheriff Allen Cheek then gave the Court an update on the inmate health care and insurance program. He compared the average medical cost per inmate per day over the last few years and said it was $1.94 per inmate per day in 2012, $2.73 in 2013 and $1.96 in 2014. Cheek also explained to the Court that the figures could be a little misleading depending on the health of specific inmates who are incarcerated at a specific time. Cheek said that he has been asked if he thought the

FAITH & RELIGION

Letter to God By Tom Smith Good morning, Heavenly Father. It’s me again. And, I needed to talk to You about a few things that have been on my heart and mind lately. I don’t need to tell You that I don’t talk to You as often as I should and I apologize for that. But, I know You’re a patient, loving God and love me in spite of me. As You know, a little over a week ago 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians were beheaded on a beach in Libya. They’d done nothing against ISIS except refuse to recant their faith, convert to Islam, pay their tax and submit to Sharia Law. How my heart ached for those young men as I looked at a picture of their faces and read a list of their names. I don’t know much about Coptic Christians but do know their history traces back to the first century with the church in Alexandria being the oldest one in that part of the world. Thus, it’s clear the attack on them was a continuation of the suffering they’ve endured ever since Jesus established the first church in Jerusalem almost 2,000 years ago. But, we shouldn’t be surprised for Jesus Himself said we should expect such. And, when I read how those early saints suffered—some being burned at the stake, beheaded, sawn in half, beaten, killed by gladiators, eaten by lions, etc. (Hebrews 11:32-40)—I realize the names of those 21 young men were added to Your Book of Martyrs. And, oh what a reception they received when they entered Your Presence a nanosecond after their heads were lopped off ! Yet, still, I found myself having a hard time praying for those men dressed in black who killed them. To them, their cause is noble and their purpose sanctioned by their god: to kill the infidel and bring the whole world into submission to Allah. But, they’re so blind and misguided, Father! They don’t know the Truth and they certainly don’t know Your redeeming Love; otherwise, they wouldn’t act the way they do. Help them, O God!

What’s that? You are? How? Through the faithfulness of those 21 men and the countless hundreds of thousands before them who refused to recant their Faith? Yes, I understand that—but a part of me wishes You’d just hurl a few lightning bolts down on those murderous members of ISIS to let them know You’re around. What’s that? Your doing so would play right into their hands and cause people to start turning to You out of fear, not Faith? Yea, I guess so; but, a part of me still wishes You’d get their attention and let them know You’re the true-and-living God, not the one they serve. I’m sorry. I’m just not there yet. I do want to have a heart like Your Son, Jesus, where I can willingly pray for folks like ISIS and those who abort babies, extort money from others, enslave others in human trafficking, etc. I’ve still got a ways to go, haven’t I? I knew You’d say that. Well, again, I’m thankful for your patience and especially Your Mercy so I don’t get what I deserve. I need Your help to be all You want me to be. So thank You for loving me just as I am and not giving up on me. I know You’re not through with me yet and am thankful You still can use me in spite of me and my weaknesses. Oh, yes, did I tell You today “I love You?” Yep, I really do. Hope you’ll continue guiding me each day because I definitely need all the help I can get. And, please help me to continue learning how to forgive folks like those 21 ISIS murderers dressed in black. It’s hard, but I’m trying. Thank You, Father. In Jesus’ Precious Name, Amen. (NOTE: If you’d like to contact Bro. Tom or receive his daily e-mail devotional, entitled “Morning Manna,” you can write him at P.O. Box 10614, Fort Smith, AR 72917 or e-mail him at pressingon@hotmail. com).

A Thought By Michael P. Daniel

be successful, they need to horrify and thus attempt to weaken the resolve of those who would oppose them. “Terrorism” counts on such horror because they know it often works. Many would much rather attempt to appease such men than to risk the possibility of a loved one falling into their hands. The fact remains, however, that these people cannot be appeased – frankly, I’m not even sure they wish to be appeased. Peace cannot be negotiated because it does not seem to be peace terrorists are seeking. In fact it seems the only thing they will be satisfied with is if the western powers leave the Middle East entirely so they can obliterate Israel (or so they think). They are clearly “enemies”, and they are perfectly happy in that role. So how do we deal with someone who does not incidentally fall into the role of “enemy” but rather seems to take some perverse pleasure in their purposeful and brutal treatment of their own “enemies”? The people of Israel were dealing with a rather brutal enemy during the time of Jesus. The Roman Empire often dealt harshly with them as a means to control the masses, so it would seem Jesus was speaking within this context. “Do not resist an evildoer” (vs 39).

Religious Confusion and the Reason For It

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy’. But I say to you, Love you enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in Heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love only those who love you, what reward do you have?” Matthew 5:43-46 NRSV I must admit I have been tossing this portion of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount around in my head since the latest ISIS video came out showing the beheading of Coptic Christians. I was extremely disturbed at the video released earlier showing the captured Jordanian pilot being burned alive while trapped in a cage, and I have seen other videos of the mass beheadings of so many others. Maybe I am a glutton for punishment, but I simply cannot wrap my mind around such brutality. Even in my former life I could easily hate someone with a red-hot passion, but I never experienced such a level of hatred that I could even imagine physically brutalizing someone so mercilessly. We are dealing with an enemy that has changed all the rules of warfare (as if war itself can somehow be humane or civilized). In order for these terrorists to

Bro. Dennis Ingle Pastor

And this, I think, is where we find out where our allegiances are. If we demand an “eye for an eye”, what are we really seeking; revenge or justice? This is important for the faithful to discern because the “eye for an eye” is, in fact, written in The Law (Exodus 21:24); but it has nothing to do with vengeance. It is part of an evolving legal system in which it is required that the punishment must fit the crime. Those who would impose a sentence must be as impartial as they can possibly be. Those who would hand down a sentence must contain their passion, and those who have been harmed must allow the legal system to work as it can. So “eye for an eye” is a legitimate requirement within the Law, and Jesus is not dismissing the Law! He is speaking to something that goes much deeper, for we are also reminded (assured?) that “Vengeance is Mine, says The Lord; I will repay!” (Deuteronomy 32:35) The bottom line is, in a word, trust. Do we trust The Lord? Do we believe He “will repay”? Or do we somehow believe we can see something or know something The Lord does not know or cannot see? For faith (which is profound trust) requires much more than to simply believe we will be “saved” on the Last Day. Faith demands our unqualified trust in the Word of The Lord in our daily living. Jesus never said it would be easy! But those who live by their own brutal treatment of their fellow human beings will be judged. This we must trust; this we must believe in, for it is also written, “Those who live by the sword will die by the sword”. This applies to everyone, including those who would seek vengeance and not true justice. None of this is to suggest our own government must “turn the other cheek”, for a legitimate government “wields the sword” for a Divine purpose: to keep order and to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Yet come what may, Jesus challenges us to trust Him regardless of how things may play out. Do we? Blessings, Michael

There is more than one reason for the religious confusion that exists in the land today. We will address two of the main ones, and in doing so we are well aware that those people who are the most confused will reject both reasons. It is their rejection of these Bible truths that has caused their confusion and leaves them in doubt. How often do we hear the question, “What is the truth anyway?” So many groups are crying out, “We have the truth, join us! But out of the hundreds of different groups it is hard to find two that agree, and therein lies the confusion! The first and most basic treason for it is, the majority of religious people do not have the Teacher living in them, which Teacher if The Holy Ghost. John 14: 16-17 God Will Send you a comforter, The Spirit of truth.” The Holy Ghost, and He shall be in you. He will lead you into all truth. If he is not there you will be confused! If the Holy Ghost is in us He will reveal to us reason number two for the great end-time confusion. Reason two has to do with the modern churches rejecting God’s method of bringing truth in every age. I speak of prophets that He raises up and reveals His Word to them, to them be given to the churches as “Thus saith The Lord.” How well I know that most of you preachers, and your congregations that read this, will continue your argument with it. Therefore I have felt led to quote God’s Word to you, while I pray that you will see that your argument is not with me, but with God, Himself!!! No one, neither man or devil, has ever won an argument with God. Please read a brief review of what He says about prophets. Jesus was The Chief Prophet, and more was to come. Matthew 23:34 “Wherefore behold, I send (present tense) unto you prophets and wise men - - - and you persecute them - - .”Luke 1: 69-71 “And He raised up an horn of Salvation - - - as He spake by the mouth of His Holy Prophets, which have been since the world began.” (This horn of salvation is God’s Prophets Who bring us God’s Word.) Amos 3: 7 “Surely The Lord God will do nothing, but He revealeth His secret unto His servants the prophets.” Acts 13:1 “There were in the church of Antioch certain prophets and teachers, as Barnabas and Simeon ----.” In Acts chapter 27 Paul was brought before King Aguppa. And he asked this king, “Believest thou the prophets?” Then Paul answered his own question and said, “I know that thou believest.” Paul discerned that the king knew that God sent prophets, both past and present tense! What about you preacher? Do you believe it or not? 1st Corinthians 12:28, Paul teaches that God puts prophets in the New Testiment church (if they will receive them,) and God has set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets - - -.” Will you argue with Paul preacher? If so you may as well close your Bible and quit! Matthew 10:41 (Jesus speaking) “He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive a prophet’s reward.” Preacher, this is just a part of New Testament teaching on prophets. In Malachi 4:5 God promises an end-time prophet, just before the great tribulation starts. A man with the Spirit of Elijah on him. “Behold, I send you Elijah the Prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of The Lord.” He came and went, and the religious world rejected him, and they remain confused! Amen

St. Charles Monument Still Stands ◄

Wednesday morning, February 18th, St. Charles Volunteer Fire Department, an ambulance from DeWitt Hospital, Police from the St. Charles Police Department, Arkansas County emergency personnel, members of the DeWitt Police Department along with the DeWitt Fire Department were called to an automobile accident at the intersection of Broadway & Arkansas Streets, right in front of the historic Civil War Monument in St. Charles. Units from the Dewitt Fire Department responded in case the Jaws of Life were needed. Upon arrival, it was found the driver of the car, Arnulfo Amaya of St. Charles, was still partially inside his overturned vehicle. Amaya said he tried to dodge a dog that ran out in front of him, forcing him to strike the monument in the middle of the intersection. The impact caused his car to flip completely upside down. The firefighters of the St. Charles Volunteer Fire Department stabilized Amaya until the arrival of the ambulance crew from Dewitt Hospital.

Greg Yielding, Congressman Crawford, Kenneth Graves Kenneth Graves visits with Senator Boozman and Dwight Roberts

Members of the U.S. Rice Producers Association recently made their way to Washington D.C. to visit their respective legislators to discuss issues concerning rice. Those who received visits from the Arkansas farmers were all six of the Arkansas Delegation, Senator Boozman and Senator Cotton, and Representatives Crawford, Womack, Hill, and Westerman. Items discussed were the needed opening of trade with Cuba, China phhytosanitary updates, the recent Iraqi Grain Board rejection to buy U.S. rice, Market Access and Foreign Market Development Programs, Trade Promotion Authority, Estate Taxes, Waters of the U.S.,

and the Agricultural Act of 2014. Other visits were made to USDA to meet with Under Secretary of Marketing and Regulatory Programs Edward Avalos. Also attending was the Deputy Administrator, Plant Protection and Quarantine Osama A. El-Lissy. A presentation was given on the need to update technology by using a PAZ 500 Whitner. Avalos agreed that the research needs to be done on this issue. Another USDA visit was attended by Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services, Michael Scuse. He listened to concerns about the Iraqi Grain Board, the success of the Market Access

Program, the Farm Bill, and the Waters of the U.S. The USRPA group also met with the US Trade Representative. This was attended by Sharon Bomer Lauristen, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Agricultural Affairs and Commodity Policy, Brian Grunenfelder, Deputy Assistant US Trade Representative, Agricultural Affairs and Commodity Policy. Discussions with them involved some of the aforementioned issues stated with other government officials. Farmers from Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, Louisiana, and California made the trip representing USRPA.

GILLETT EHC HOLDS FEBRUARY MEETING The Gillett Extension Homemakers Club held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 17, at The Paddy in Gillett with Margie Hackney as hostess and four members present. Hackney, club president, called the meeting to order. Rose Ella Smith read an inspirational message based on Galatians 6:10 reminding us to do good unto all men and never lose sight of the gift of giving to others. Hackney read the thought for the month: “A friend is someone who

knows all about you and still loves you,” by Elbert Hubbard. Smith, Family Relationships and Child Development Leader, presented the program on Understanding Personalities using colors to help understand ourselves and others better. All enjoyed determining which color or colors most dominated our personalities and also enjoyed learning the characteristics and occupations of each color as well as how to better communicate with each. Dorothy Connelly, secretary, called roll. The minutes and the treasurer’s report were approved. Hackney told the group about upcoming events, including the 4-H Banquet on March 10. Hackney and Smith will make cakes for the banquet and Hackney will help serve. The Spring Council meeting

on April 22 at PCC DeWitt was also discussed. Hackney told the club members to be selecting recipes to go in the upcoming Arkansas County EHC yearbooks. Smith read the helpful hint: Spring bouquet to display? Firm up the soft stems of flowers like tulips or daffodils by inserting each into a wide straw before adding to a vase. Smith won the door prize. Thelma Connelly was also present. Everyone enjoyed the many delicious refreshments furnished by Hackney. The meeting closed with the Homemaker’s Prayer. The February meeting will be on Tuesday, March 17, at The Paddy in Gillett at 2 p.m. Grantham and Lehner Honored with Shower Friends gathered in the Little Rock home of Addison and Allison Anthony for a couple’s kitchen shower Saturday, February 21, 2015 to honor Katie Grantham and Matthew Lehner. GREETINGS: I suppose everyone has heard the term, “frozen in time.” Well, that’s exactly how I feel this morning. And I also have a very bad case of “cabin fever.” And besides all that, Jay is still recuperating from a bad case of shingles. Oh me, oh my o!!! But I’ll still take cold (well, maybe just cool weather,) anytime. NIGHT OUT: My husband actually took me out for a very nice dinner at the Bull Pen. Can you imagine that? It was a special candlelight Valentine’s Day dinner for two and we both enjoyed it very much. The meal consisted of a garden salad, a large steak cooked to perfection of your choice, a baked potato and yeast rolls. For dessert, New York style cheesecake with strawberries. All the while, everyone was entertained by “Elvis” as he sang romantic songs from his movies and albums. And this all happened in DeWitt. Ha! APOLOGY: I want to apologize to Becky McGahhey for getting her birth date wrong. I printed her birthday as being on February 5th. Her birthday is actually February 8th. I’m very sorry for this, Becky. Am I forgiven? I

suppose I was trying to prove that I’m only human. Love ya, Kiddo! PADGETT PARTY: Ms. Josie Padgett of Ethel was honored on her ninetyfifth birthday. Her children and grandchildren hosted a party for her at Belleview Baptist Church in Ethel on Saturday, February 7th. Approximately one hundred-twenty people signed her guest book. We love you, Ms. Josie, and you have a very blessed family to help you. God has been good to you the same as He has been for us all. CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Josh Rieves of DeWitt. Josh and Tammy West Pace were married on January 31, 2015 in Monroe, LA at Layton Castle. We do wish you both a very long and happy life together, Josh and Tammy. Love you, kids. PHONE CALL FROM ARIZONA: I was surprised when I answered by telephone the other morning. On the other end was a very good friend of mine and was one of my Mother’s best friends. Mary (Shrum) Stone from Phoenix, AZ, formerly of DeWitt, called to give me a couple of recipes
