PROFESSIONAL WORK | BAND PRACTICE SPACE: THE MUSIC BOX 1330 N St, Lincoln, NE 68508 HDR, Inc. 2023 The band practice space, called the “Music Box,” is located in the heart of downtown Lincoln. Leading the city’s new Music District initiative, the space promotes flexibility and encourages community outreach. Lincoln, Nebraska is known for its creative arts presence. Recognizing the importance of implementing Lincolns’ character into the space, we plan to commission local muralists. The outdoor wall in the drive will act as a rotating canvas, allowing for traveling and local artists to participate in the building of the space. The space allows for not only band shows, practice, and classes, but also for art show and intimate events.

PROFESSIONAL WORK | JOSLYN ART MUSEUM: LOOM INSTALLATION 2200 Dodge St, Omaha, NE 68102 HDR, Inc. 2023 With the renovation and addition of the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, the Joslyn team is looking to revisit some of the interactive installations within the Children’s Room. This year’s intern cohort is leading this design effort, interfacing with clients and consultants.

SPAIN: MODEL MAKING WORKSHOP

Liencres, Spain Atlier La Juantana Associate Professor Brian Kelly, Summer 2023 1 week

As a part of UNL’s study abroad program led by Professor Brian Kelly, we stayed in Liencres, Spain for one Atlier La Juantana, we created a variety of different models and works through various mediums. Some of the include casting resin, zinc, plaster, concrete, and even bronze. We also created a print by etching a design o sheet. The model making workshop provided me with a broader knowledge of physical representation techn

METAL ETCHING We used a process called metal etching to create prints. To create our design, we scratched a small needle into a metal sheet. We then placed the sheet in acid and applied a chemical liquid to the surface. After firing the sheet, we applied ink and printed it onto paper.

GAUDÍ’S CHIMNEY Form Inspiration I was inspired by the chimney forms on top of projects like Güell Palace, Casa Batllo, and La Pedrea. Güell Palace, in particular, has forms and colors that inspired the form of the vase and casts.

ADDITIVE CASTING The ceramic vase pictured above was created from additive casting. In order to do this, we created a profile of our vase out of wood. We then placed the profile onto a wood box and axis that could be spun. Slowly, we poured plaster over the profile letting it build and shape the vase. We then created plaster molds from this additive form, and casted those using ceramic slip.

WOOD MASTER We carved and created a “master” out of wood. The master was treated, then used to create our silicone mold. This mold was used to create the models below.

Concrete

Dyed Plaster

BRONZE Lost Wax Technique From our silicone mold, we created a wax form. Using wax melted in a hot plate as shown below (01), we created long appendages that branch off our wax master. These acted as vents when pouring the bronze.

Resin

The wax models are used to create a plaster/sand mold to pour bronze into. The wax melts out of the mold when coming in contact with the hot bronze.

SUBTRACTIVE CASTING Throughout the week, we cast in a variety of materials such as concrete, resin, zinc, and plaster. We started with a wood “master,” first creating a form carved out of wood. After the wood master was finished, we cast them in silicone and used this mold to create a variety of copies of our master.

SPAIN: OBSERVATIONAL SKETCHES

Barcelona, Spain UNL Study Abroad Professor Brian Kelly, Summer 2023 2 weeks As a part of UNL’s study abroad program led by Professor Brian Kelly, we stayed in Barcelona, Spain for two weeks. During these two weeks, we experienced the city, culture, and history. We walked to a variety of influential projects everyday, conducting observational sketches along the way.

GAUDÍ FURNITURE Almost every Gaudí architectural project was paired with custom furniture. Fascinated by the furniture’s versatility and individuality, I created a spread that studied each work. Pictured to the right (02, 03) are chairs created for residential projects. Above (01) is a pew from a Crypt by Gaudí, created from wood and iron. The shapes of all of his furniture is heavily derived and inspired by nature, as is his architecture.

05 La Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudí

GAUDÍ FORM Gaudí forms, especially evident in La Sagrada Familia, are heavily inspired from nature. All his previous projects were experiments of his structural and formal theories, for example, slanted columns are more structural like bent knees give us more stability. La Sagrada’s use of color is biblical, not depicting illustrations of stories, but the emotions of them through color.

FURNITURE: MAHOGANY TABLE

Yucaipa, CA Winter 2022 1 week

I completed this project in my dad’s garage during winter break of 2022. The previous year, 2021, I gifted my parents a wooden tray. My dad always brings up breakfast for himself and my mom in the mornings. Before the wooden tray, they had used a cutting board to bring up their food. I then noticed that even after using the breakfast tray, they were haphazardly placing the tray on a makeshift table. I decided to make them a table that was an extension of the tray I got them for Christmas in 2021. The table is created from mahogany wood, expressive in grain and character. The legs angle out to mimic the angled legs of the tray. The center of the table dips down, providing a space for the tray to be set into.

FURNITURE: CABINET

Lincoln, NE Professor Eddie Dominguez, Fall 2022 4 weeks

The cabinet was inspired by forms that I saw in mugs when working at the Lux Center for the Arts, a local art gallery in Lincoln, NE. The mug had feet and body that was reminiscent of a bug or small animal. I was inspired by these bug like qualities and mid century design. The body of the cabinet is built out of popular, with maple framing. The shelf is set about 1/3 of the way up the form, inset into the body to allow for a linear and consistent side profile. The construction of this project was formative, as I was able to used a variety of new construction techniques.

Connections included dominoes, screws, and dowels.

To hide part of the construction process, the back of the cabinet was routed out and a panel was inserted.

The glue up required 2 people, and was tedious. Due to the harsh angels, extra supports were required to support the clamps.

The legs expressed a technique of construction unlike the rest of the cabinet: the use of dowels.

CONSTRUCTION The angles of the project were difficult to construct, requiring precise measurements and calculations. I used wooden dominoes to bind the walls of the body together. The shelf was attached by screws. The legs are expressive in their construction, binding to the body by dowels. The dowels are left sticking out the legs.

OTHER WORKS

Varies Mediums: Graphite, Pastel, Clay, Paint 2023

In addition to my architecture courses, I have taken additional course in art and art history. This past year, I have taken sculpture and life drawing. These classes have expanded my technical drawing skills and allowed me to experiment with different mediums.

A COUPLE, 2023 The couple was born to communicate the feeling of a busy mind.

66 OTHER WORKS

MAN WITH THE LONG NECK, 2023 The Man with a Long Neck was done in a Life Drawing course. His neck and other proportions were altered, referencing Parmigianino’s “Madonna with the Long Neck.”

SISTERS, 2020 The sisters were inspired by my own relationship with my sister. This drawing won first place in the 2020 San Bernardino Young Artist Gallery.

SCULPTURE Clay & Paint Due to the (life) size of the head, we started with a foam circle to place clay around. After the sculpting was over, we cut the heads in half to remove the foam. The 2 halfs were stitched together before going into the kiln.

THE DRAGON MAN, 2023 The character on the Dragon Man’s forehead is from a sentimental necklace of mine. A Chinese artist from the 1200s, Chen Rong, inspired the THE DRAGON MAN, 2023, CLAY & ACRYLIC

I packaged the work in brown paper, tied together with twine. Their name was written on the outside of the roll. For out of state orders, this was packaged with a larger protective case in mind.

This was my first time experimenting with pastels. I chose this medium for its thickness and ability to create visual depth in the work.
