Within every community are sub-communities: churches, athletes, families, politicians, foodies, business owners and more.

Some of these sub-communities strive to impact the greater community, whether through donations, events or volunteer work.

In Tehachapi, many artists and art-lovers have bonded together under the umbrella of the Tehachapi Valley Arts Association.

They have dedicated their time and talent to “promote the production, presentation and appreciation of the arts in the Tehachapi area,” according to the group’s website, galleryngifts.com.

Periodically, TVAA sponsors community-oriented events, ranging from talks over coffee with local artists, to photography and art contests, to handcraft festivals.

On Saturday, Aug. 10, TVAA will host its 13th annual Chalk on the Walk in Downtown Tehachapi.

“The original thought was to bring people downtown to stroll around and see neat art,” TVAA president Peggy Cowden said.

She recounted the days when Downtown Tehachapi was less vibrant and bustling. The push at that time, she said, was to attract both visitors and residents to the downtown

“The sidewalks are just crawling with people,” Cowden said, referring to a typical Chalk on the Walk.

“It’s just downright fun. It’s a very community kind of feeling. Everyone’s sharing [supplies] and chalk, and ‘oohing’ and ‘ahhing’ over everyone’s drawings.”

Cowden said although Chalk on the Walk artists in years past have numbered as many as 90, this year, she expects about half as many.

“But they all bring their entourage,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how hot it is.

They come prepared.”

The art event is technically a scholarship fundraiser. Entrants pay $15 for a tshirt and chalks, of which only about a dollar goes to the scholarship. The pri-

Drawings will be judged on artistic ability and visual appeal. Awards will be presented in front of Gallery ‘n’ Gifts at 3:30 p.m., with the main prize being a glider flight at Skylark North Airport.

Cowden said some artists choose to reproduce famous works, while others come up with original pieces. Regardless, she said, the drawings don’t last forever.

“It’s a very temporary art,” she said. “The wind takes the chalk away and it fades.”

2013Tehachapi Mountain Festival Entertainment Philip Marx Central Park is filled with activity during the Tehachapi Mountain Festival and this year's entertainment schedule includes favorites from the past along with newcomers.

Black Gold Cloggers The Black Gold Cloggers will open the entertainment program, performing from noon to 12:40 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Clogging is a percussive dance form done to any music with a good eight count beat. The Black Gold Cloggers, based in Bakersfield, have been demonstrating clogging since 1982 and also offer classes through Bakersfield Recreation and Parks.

Tehachapi Martial Arts Center The action continues from 12:50 to 1:20 p.m. with demonstrations from students of the Tehachapi Martial Arts Center on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Movin' On Following the parade awards ceremony (1:20 to 1:35 p.m.), Movin' On takes the stage from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. Saturday.

Movin’ On made its debut performance at the Souza Vineyard’s Fathers’ Day Celebration back in June of 2011. The group continues to play a wide variety of musical genres which include country,

Band members include Kathleen Gair, vocals and guitar, Gary Lecin, guitar and vocals, Dave Crowe, bass and vocals, Nick Benedict, drums and vocals and Paul Hughes, guitar and vocals.

Hughes, a remarkable vocalist and songwriter, is the newest addition to the band family and will make his formal debut with Movin’ On during the Mountain Festival.

The band's ability to weave intricate vocal harmonies together with tight instrumental arrangements is a strength. All five of the band members are seasoned players who may also be seen occasionally "jamming" with other local musicians.

Movin' On has played at many local venues inlud-

ing the VFW, Moose Lodge, Souza Vineyard, Oak Tree Country Club, The Dog House, The 58 and Jennifer's Terrace.

Members of the band plan to continue making

music together for a very long time and also look forward to writing and recording their own songs very soon.

They are slated to perform Sept. 7 at Oak Tree County Club in Bear Valley Springs.

“I’ve always been drawn to stripped-down, raw roots music and great storytelling,” Austin said of his influences, who, in addition to the aforementioned icons, include Dave Alvin,

Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Townes Van Zandt, and Gram Parsons. “If you can’t tap your feet to it, or tap your beer bottle against the tabletop, you’ve missed the target.”

In his song “The Day Buck Owens Died,” Austin mourns the loss of the Bakersfield Sound pioneer, and at the same time, dedicates an unabashed homage to the music of Owens and the Buckaroos. Austin said he still remembers being stunned by the news of Buck’s passing in March 2006. Austin dealt with the loss the best way he knew how, by writing about it.

Sunday Sunday's line-up begins with a church service from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., sponsored by Christian Life Assembly.

The community and visitors are invited to join in the open air service in Central Park.

Demonstrations by students from the Tehachapi Martial Arts Center have become a popular part of the Mountain Festival. This year they are scheduled on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 12:50 to 1:20 p.m. in Philip Marx Central Park.

Pat Strong Trio + 2 From 10 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18,, the Pat Strong Trio + 2 will take the stage with upbeat easy listening music sung in three or four part harmony.

The group will play all their favorites, which include country, folk, oldies, soft rock and jazz.

They like to “mix it up” with songs of all kinds — fast and slow — to keep the sound fresh and fun for all ages to appreciate.

Pat Strong leads the band as key vocalist and rhythm guitar player. She makes each song her own with her wonderful fullbodied alto voice. Pat wrote the much-requested Tehachapi song entitled “Come Sit on My Porch,” which describes the beauty of each season living in Tehachapi.

Amanda Carroll is the band’s newest member.

She sings soprano leads as well as harmony. Her sweet country and jazz voice adds a beautiful clear soprano sound to the group.

Be sure to listen for Lisa Cosgrove’s enthusiastic bass guitar sound. Lisa definitely adds a lot of fullness and creative bass playing to the mix.

Jack Hill, the group's stunt guitarist, also plays a mean harmonica and sings some of the lead songs in his unique way. His many years of music experience make him an asset to the group, especially with his great lead guitar riffs.

Casey Papac sings some of the leads, and blends her deep alto harmony with Pat, Amanda and Jack.

To add a bit of a beat, Casey also accompanies the group on the djembe hand drum.

The Pat Strong Trio + 2 plays every fourth Friday at La Bella Amore, and every fourth Saturday at Apple Shed, both great food & fun-for-family dining establishments in

Tehachapi. Additionally, the group plays at wine tasting events, Farmers Market and various other parties and events in the Tehachapi area.

Speakeasy Speakeasy takes over next, playing from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The smooth jazz quartet from Bakersfield believes in the art of music. The band consists of four friends who have a love of all genres of music but share a desire to express their talents through the smooth jazz forum.

The members of Speakeasy, who met at church playing worship music together, include Don Jacobsen who plays the tenor and alto saxaphone, Daniel Saldania on electric guitar, Joe Verdugo on Keyboards and Daniel Lopez on drums and percussion. On occasion the band will also have close friends sit in with them.

Fusing the cultures of pop music, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, and Rock help give Speakeasy their signature sound and the ability to offer something for

every audience.

Speakeasy started as a one time project in the spring of 2009 and has evolved into a working band that has performed at many venues.

Honky Tonk Truckers

Gary Jones will once again handle the live sound and serve as Entertainment Master of Ceremonies for the Mountain Festival. This is his fifth year in this role.

Wrapping up the festival on Sunday afternoon are the Honky Tonk Truckers, playing from 1:30 to 5 p.m.

The Honky Tonk Truckers have shared their rocking country music in Tehachapi and the surrounding areas for the last seven years. Although the group was officially founded in July of 2006, the band can trace its country rock roots and life-long friendships back to the late 1970s when the members of the group were playing the club and concert circuit in the Antelope Valley.

The current lineup includes Monroe Conner (bass and vocals), Rich Valpey (guitar and vocals), Mace McAdams (guitar and vocals) and Norm Dravis (drums and vocals).

Take a scenic drive through Kern County’s pioneer past

ley was known as “The Park” to the early pioneers, and was a stop on the overland stage and mail routes.

Climbing out of Walker Basin, the next point of interest along the road is the town of Havilah.

In the mid-1860s, Asbury Harpending, [CQ: ASBURY HARPENDING] a noted financier and southern activist, who, at one time actually conspired to seize the city of San Francisco for the Confederacy, began promoting the area as the state's next big gold strike. The town boomed, and served as the county seat until 1872. Today, there are still several reminders of the county's history, including the original 1866 courthouse, now a museum, open Saturdays and Sundays to the public.

Continuing north, the road next drops down into Bodfish, offering a panoramic view of the Lake Isabella area. In Bodfish, travelers can take in the Silver City Ghost Town, a western museum containing restored historic buildings.

There is something relaxing about a drive in the country, and Kern County certainly has its fair share of scenic country roads, but few can offer the opportunity to travel back in time and follow in the footsteps and wagon ruts of the county's first pioneers like a leisurely trek up the CalienteBodfish Road.

The start of any good adventure should begin with a wholesome meal, and a breakfast at the historic Keene Cafe, right off of Highway 58's Keene exit, certainly qualifies. Since it was first constructed in the 1920s, the Keene Cafe has become something of a landmark for locals and travelers alike, serving up three-egg omelets, and friendly atmosphere.

After breakfast, travel east on Highway 58 to Bealeville Road, and head north toward Caliente.

The road winds its way past picturesque decapitated barns and other structures, which helps to set the historic mood for the journey to come, and then starts its twisting climb into the rugged Tehachapi Mountains.

The road can be narrow at times, but there are frequent turnouts, and most of them offer breath-taking views of the mountains reaching out in the distance, and often deer, and even the occasional elk, can be seen grazing in the woods just off the road.

Ranchers For Peace at Fiddlers Crossing Aug. 9

Throughout history, music has been an important form of communication. Early bards traveled from place to place, singing the news of the times and keeping tales of heroism and adventure alive. In U.S. history, songs sung on the plantations would let African slaves know when and how to run for freedom.

In more modern times, songs have been used to raise social consciousness to the issues of the day. “We Shall Overcome” became the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. Pete Seeger’s “Where Have all the Flowers Gone” and Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” were sung by a generation in reaction to an

unpopular war. Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is your Land” was a response to the fencing off of the West.

The intent was not “political” in the sense of one party or the other, but a deeper yearning for justice and “right” in a world gone astray.

This is the tradition followed by Ranchers For Peace. The father-daughter duo from Cambria, Charles and Ray Duncan, will be appearing at Fiddlers Crossing Friday, August 9, at 7 p.m. Everywhere they have played, including a recent concert in Bakersfield, they have garnered rave reviews for their songs and their entwined vocal and instrumental harmonies that use melodica, harmonica and guitar.

worldly concerns combine with empathy and, on a good day, become audible.”

The “peace” they are “for”

is not something that can be directly invoked, they say, but is a by-product that only arises in the presence of other favorable conditions and qualities, such as justice. “Our mission,” say these Ranchers For Peace, “is to advocate for such conditions, and to join our noise with the long tradition of folksingers, bards, and troubadours who have done the same.”

They sing of the great issues facing us today, of immigration, racial tensions, pollution and the excesses of the corporate culture. But their overall message is simply that it’s cool to care.

Charles, a former TV writer, grew up in the 1960s when “music was part of the conversation” about civil rights, the Vietnam War

and other social issues of the day. Seventeen-year-old Ray doesn't think it's cool to be detached -- too "chill," in her words -- and she welcomes a chance to demonstrate that a little catharsis is good for the soul, and good for society.

“We think and we feel, and often both at the same time. And plenty of people seem to be inclined to join us for the ride.”

Why does eating cause a runny nose?

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My nose drains so badly when eating that I have to blow it twice before I finish the meal. It's especially disturbing if I eat something warm or steaming. I was given a nasal spray, but it hasn't worked as well as I would like. — S.I. ANSWER: Your condition has a name: gustatory rhinorrhea — a runny nose upon eating. Physically hot foods or spicy foods often trigger it. The spray you mentioned often works well. Astelin nasal spray is an antihistamine that is used before eating that sometimes can control the dripping. So can Flonase intranasal spray, a cortisone product.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, and I took antibiotics for a couple of months. I went back to the doctor and tested negative on two occasions, but I still had symptoms of an infection. I have been on an antibiotic, once a day, ever since. I am completely at a loss to know what to do next. Can you offer any suggestions? — J.T. ANSWER: It's not normal to stay on antibiotics for as lengthy a time as you have been on them for a urinary tract infection. It's next to impossible to have

a urinary tract infection if the lab cannot substantiate that there is an infection.

Ask your doctor if you can go off all antibiotics and then have a microscopic exam of your urine and have the urine cultured for bacteria.

Conditions other than infection can produce symptoms similar to those of an infection — painful and frequent urination.

Interstitial cystitis is such a condition. The woman (less often a man) spends much of the day and night dashing to the bathroom to empty her bladder. She does this with urgency to avoid losing urine control.

It's something that disrupts life.

A specialist can view the bladder with a scope to see if there are changes of the bladder lining that are consistent with interstitial cystitis.

Treatment is not with antibiotics. It's not an infection. A number of other medications are used.

If you haven't gotten a definitive diagnosis soon, I'd recommend you see a urologist or a gynecological urologist.

summary of typical signs and symptoms and the appropriate treatment.

My blood tests indicate I am taking the correct dose. How long do I take this medicine? Is it safe? — E.A. ANSWER: You take thyroid hormone because your thyroid gland doesn't produce enough of it. You are hypothyroid — low in thyroid hormone. Usually this is a lifelong condition, and taking the medicine is only supplying your body with something it needs.

It's safe to take forever.

Introducing Montasio Cheese Montasio, with a savory, well-balanced flavor, is new to many Americans, but its origins can be traced back to a 17th-century monastery. To this day, it is made only in northern Italy's Friuli Venezia Giulia and East Veneto and has earned membership in Europe's "hall of fame" as a PDO product. Young semi-soft Montasio is terrific on a cheese platter or on sandwiches. Aged Montasio can be grated for pasta, risotto and other dishes.

Asparagus, Orange and Prosciutto di San Daniele Salad Yield: 6 portions

• 1 pound asparagus, trimmed • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon orange juice • 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar

• 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 8 slices Prosciutto di San Daniele (4 ounces), halved lengthwise • 2 navel oranges, peeled and segmented • 1/4 cup pine nuts, toasted

onds. Stir in pasta, cauliflower and wine. Stir well, adding pasta water as needed for a saucy consistency. Stir in parsley and hot pepper flakes. Spoon into shallow bowls; top with remaining Prosciutto di Parma and breadcrumbs. Garnish with additional Prosciutto di Parma slices, if desired.

In salted water, cook asparagus until tender, 3 to 5 minutes. Rinse with cold water; pat dry.

In small bowl, whisk olive oil, orange juice, vinegar, salt and pepper. Divide asparagus on salad plates and drizzle with dressing. Arrange Prosciutto di San Daniele and orange segments over asparagus; sprinkle with pine nuts.

Parmigiano Reggiano-Spinach Puffs Yield: about 3 dozen

• 4 cups baby spinach (6 ounces), cooked, cooled • 3/4 cup flour • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 3/4 cup milk • 5 tablespoons butter • 3 large eggs, at room temperature • 1 1/2 cups (6 ounces) coarsely grated Parmigiano Reggiano Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Wrap spinach in a towel, squeeze until dry; chop fine. In small bowl, mix flour, salt and cayenne.

In medium saucepan, bring milk and butter to a boil.

Remove from heat and add flour mixture; with wooden spoon, beat until it thickens and pulls away from sides, about 1 minute. Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well until incorporated. Stir in spinach and cheese. Drop rounded spoonfuls onto prepared baking sheets, spacing 1 inch apart. Bake until golden, 20 to 25 minutes. Serve warm.

(Puffs can be held at room temperature up to 1 day or frozen; reheat in 400° oven, 3 to 5 minutes.)

Ziti with Roasted Cauliflower, Prosciutto di Parma and Toasted Breadcrumbs Yield: 4 portions

• 2 slices country-style bread, crusts removed, torn into pieces • 1/3 cup olive oil, divided • 1 large cauliflower (2 1/2 pounds), trimmed and chopped • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 8 slices Prosciutto di Parma (4 ounces), cut into 1-inch squares, divided • 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 8 ounces dry ziti, cooked and drained, reserving 1 cup pasta water • 1/2 cup dry white wine • 1/2 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley • 1/4 teaspoon hot red pepper flakes, or to taste Preheat oven to 425° F. In food processor, pulse bread to form crumbs. In shallow pan, mix breadcrumbs with 1 tablespoon olive oil; toast until golden, stirring once, about 5 minutes. In large baking pan, mix cauliflower with 3 tablespoons olive oil and salt. Roast until browned, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes. In large skillet over medium-high heat, heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil; add half prosciutto and cook until crisp. Stir in garlic; cook until fragrant, about 30 sec-

Bruschetta with Skillet-Seared Mushrooms and Grana Padano Yield: 4 portions

• 4 slices country-style bread • 4 ounces Grana Padano, coarsely grated • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 pound crimini mushrooms, thinly sliced • 1 small red bell pepper, cut in 1/2-inch pieces • 2 cloves garlic, cut in slivers • 2 teaspoons flour • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1/3 cup half-and-half Preheat oven to 400° F. On baking sheet, toast bread until crisp, about 10 minutes. Scatter one-third of the Grana Padano over toast.

In large skillet over medium-high heat, heat olive oil; add mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, until they give off liquid, about 5 minutes.

Stir in bell pepper and garlic; cook until tender, about 5 minutes. Reduce heat.

Stir in flour, salt and pepper; cook, stirring, 2 minutes; add half-and-half and simmer until slightly thickened, about 3 minutes.

Divide over bruschetta and top with remaining Grana Padano.

If you feel frustrated or intimidated whenever you take your car in for repairs, you're not alone. According to the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau, auto repair fraud consistently ranks among the top consumer complaints they receive.

Although most auto repair shops are legitimate, some unscrupulous operators will rip off inexperienced car owners by performing unnecessary or unauthorized repairs, substituting counterfeit or used replacement parts, or even doing such shoddy work that lives are endangered.

Here are tips for becoming a more informed consumer and a few common scams to avoid: • Try to have a trusted repair shop already lined up before you need one. Ask friends or your auto insurance company for recommendations, or search the Better Business Bureau's website (www.bbb.org) for accredited businesses. Also: • Ask the state Attorney General's office (www.naag.org) whether any complaints have been filed against prospective mechanics.

• Look for mechanics currently certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (www.ase.com) or who belong to your insurer's authorized repair network.

• If your car's warranty is still in force, you may be required to use only authorized dealerships.

• If your car needs major work, gather several estimates for comparison. Once you've chosen a shop, ask for a detailed estimate (with no sections left blank) before you authorize repairs. Specify that you must be called to grant permission before additional repairs. Make sure the work order clearly specifies: • Repairs to be done.

• All fees, including parts, labor, storage, loaner car, etc.

• Whether new, reconditioned, or used parts will be used.

• Acceptable payment methods.

• Completion date.

• Diagnostic or reassembly charges if you decide to get a second opinion or have the work done elsewhere.

(Ask them to show you the work done and replaced parts.) Also have the bill spell out any guaranteed items (including exclusions), in case problems occur later and you need contractual proof.

Watch out for these common scams: • They give you a verbal estimate then charge a higher price. Always get it in writing.

• A shop lures you in with low-cost specials (oil change, brake inspection, etc.), then pads the work order with other repairs you don't want or need. If in

doubt, have the initial work done and get a second opinion on the rest, unless there's an immediate safety issue.

• Charging for services that are covered under the car's warranty. (Always read your warranty carefully.)

• Dishonest mechanics have been known to inflict intentional damage during an inspection in order to boost needed repairs.

• They don't want to return replaced parts to you, which could mean the work wasn't actually done, or they used inferior parts. (Keep in mind that there could be discarded parts lying around that they could pass off as yours.)

• Going against your car manufacturer's

recommendations. If your manual recommends getting an oil change every 10,000 miles but the mechanic says every 3,000, make sure there's a good reason.

• Offers to waive the deductible – for example, offering to install a used part and bill your insurance company for a new one. This insurance fraud could land you in a world of hurt.

• High-pressure sales tactics.

Just because you don't completely understand what goes on under the hood doesn't mean you can't protect yourself against auto repair scams.
