Musical follows growth of student performers BY EMILY BRUNETT TEHACHAPI NEWS

Advanced drama students from Tehachapi High School will transform upon stepping on stage to present “Fame” to Tehachapi audiences. Shows will be Nov. 14 through 17 in the performing arts room behind the cafeteria, 801 Dennison Road, each night at 7 p.m., and on Nov. 16 and 17, a matinee will begin at 2 p.m. The play is directed by four-year drama student Emily Stults, who said she helped in its selection. “I’ve watched the show, I’ve watched all the movies,” she said. “It brings out the qualities of everybody in the class. It’s really fun and there’s a lot of music and singing and dancing and it’s acting and everything.” The musical follows a group of students entering a performing arts high school, from their audition through their senior year. The students specialize in various departments, including music, dancing and acting. “There’s a lot of character development,” Stults said. “Each character just goes through high school like any kid would go through high school, but they do it with a lot more

The Tehachapi High School Advanced Drama Class is presenting "Fame" with shows beginning Thursday, Nov. 14, and running through Sunday Nov. 17. The play chronicles students of the School of Performing Arts in New York City. pressure because they’re doing performing arts as well as regular school.” The student director said that because the play follows high school students, she thinks students in high school are the best choices to portray those characters. “Our actors are really great, they’re really phenomenal,” she said. “I think they all bring their own energy and that will really attract audiences. These are characters that everybody already knows from the show and from the movies, so I think that

all of our actors bring a different light to each character that no one has ever really seen.” Sean LaMonte, 16, who plays the character Montgomery, praised Stults for her casting choices. “I think that Emily casted this play really, really well, and that a lot of the characters on stage aren’t necessarily acting,” he said. “Their characters match who they are, quite often.” Sixteen-year-old Brooke Langston agreed. “We’re drama students

portraying drama students,” she said with a laugh. Langston plays Coco, a “sassy Puerto Rican” who is good at everything. Drama teacher Lara Crowe expressed pride in the work the students are putting in to the production. “They are very dedicated and they work hard,” she said. “They put so much into it. They are very dedicated to being excellent.” Stults said she thinks “Fame” will be a great attraction for the community. “It’s fun, it’s light, so it’s something that you can come and enjoy as a family,” she said. “Also it does teach a lot of good lessons, so they’ll enjoy that, as well. Also the music is fun, so a lot of people get drawn in to that.” Tickets cost $6 or $4 with an ASB card and can be purchased at the door. Proceeds go toward the THS Drama Club.

Practical Money Matters

Although I take a certain amount of comfort from statistics that show major declines in most types of crime throughout the U.S., I also know that burglaries have increased in areas surrounding my neighborhood over the last few years. I was finally prompted to take action was when my family returned home after being away for one night and found that someone had gotten about 90 percent through the process of unscrewing our front door handle. I figured we got lucky that time but it was a wake-up call that we needed to beef up our security measures. I did a lot of research on home alarm systems and

here's what I learned: There are several national players in the home security industry, as well as numerous regional and local companies. Much of the equipment used by most of them comes from the same few manufacturers, including GE and Honeywell. With larger companies like ADT (which we eventually chose), you can buy directly from them, or go through one of their authorized contractors who will sell you the equipment and install it, then turn over the ongoing monitoring to ADT. In our case, I was able to use my AAA membership discount with a local ADT-authorized agent and bargain for a lot of additional hard-

ware, saving considerable money on the overall deal. Certain vendors will sell you the equipment directly to install yourself. Some people install a security system that sounds an earpiercing alarm if their house is broken into but doesn't send a signal to a central monitoring station. That'll save you from paying a monthly monitoring bill – typically $20 to $50 a month or more. But be aware that police departments often charge a stiff fee for responding to false alarms. Far more common is to sign a monitoring service contract – usually at least a two- or three-year commitment. Typically, whenever your system is activated it sends

a signal to a central monitoring station. The monitoring station generally will call you to verify it's not a false alarm. If they can't reach you, or whoever answers gives the wrong password, they may then contact the proper authorities (police, fire or medical services) to investigate. Depending on how much you're willing to spend, there's a broad array of security equipment available, including: • Central control unit with backup battery, keypad and siren. • Motion detectors, which sense changes in a room caused by human presence. • Magnetic door and window contacts, which form a circuit that breaks when the

door or window is opened, sounding the alarm. • Detectors for smoke, fire, carbon monoxide and/or broken glass. • Panic buttons (handheld or mounted in strategic locations). • Pressure mats placed under rugs to detect footsteps. • Closed-circuit TV system to allow monitoring and/or recording inside or outside your home. • Temperature gauges to detect if your furnace is broken and the pipes are about to freeze. • Water detectors to detect basement leaks. Most homeowners and renters insurance policies provide a discount for installing an alarm system – generally between 2 and

20 percent, depending on which equipment you've installed. It pays to shop around. I asked friends for recommendations and did a lot of online research. Don't fall for high-pressure sales techniques or scare tactics. Once you've identified a few good candidates, check for customer complaints with the Better Business Bureau or other trusted reviewers. The Federal Trade Commission ( provides tips for choosing a home security system and identifying common scams. Jason Alderman directs Visa's financial education programs. Fast-Fix Dinners Easy Family Meals in Under an Hour

Vegetarian Lasagna Skillet (Family Features) Family schedules can get hectic,

but it doesn't have to be hard to make time for a great family dinner. Whether it's a hearty dish of Bolognese or lighter vegetarian fare, quality ingredients and easy recipes can help you get a great dish on the table in no time. The whole family will love the Latin-inspired flavors found in Chorizo Bolognese. Ground beef, chorizo, sliced olives and adobo seasoning are cooked in tomato sauce and poured over pasta. Look for canned tomatoes and sauces, like those from Hunt's(r), which are 100 percent natural and free from artificial preservatives. Hunt's uses hot water to peel their tomatoes with FlashSteam(r) instead of being peeled with harsh chemicals like other leading brands. When you're taking the time to prepare homemade meals for your family, it's important to use quality ingredients. Another crowd pleaser is Easy Chicken Parmesan. Start by combining grated Kraft(r) Parmesan cheese with diced tomatoes flavored with basil, garlic and oregano. Coat each chicken breast with the delectable sauce and place it in the oven. While it bakes for 30 minutes, you can help the kids with their homework or enjoy a little time to yourself. For those looking for a meatless option, try the Vegetarian Lasagna Skillet with a pre-prepared Alfredo sauce to help save you time. Combine the creamy white sauce with pasta, zucchini, beans, fire roasted tomatoes and part-skim mozzarella cheese and it's ready in just 30 minutes. For more delicious signature recipes, visit While visiting the website, choose an easy weeknight Hunt's Signature Recipe with Kraft cheese and you'll receive a valuable coupon. Share your favorite recipe with friends on Pinterest, Facebook or email and you will receive the chance to win one of several prizes, including $5,000 to host your own party with Chef George Duran. Explore the history and culture of the automobile BY GREGORY D. COOK TEHACHAPI NEWS

Nestled in the heart of the Los Angeles Museum District, on Wilshire Blvd., the Petersen Automotive Museum allows guests to explore the automobile, and its impact on American life and culture. The museum's four-story building encompasses over 300,000 square feet of exhibition space, filled with some of the rarest cars, trucks and motorcycles in the world. One of the things that sets the Petersen museum apart from other car museums is the style in which

they exhibit their collections. Instead of displaying rows of exotic vehicles, visitors are invited to stroll through a large streetscape dioramas, giving context to the exhibits, and emphasizing the affect the automobile has has had on American culture. These themed exhibits change periodically, to allow the museum to rotate its collection of oner 300 historic vehicles on and off display, and assure that its exhibits remain fresh for return visits. For an additional fee, gusts can take a guided tour of the museum's vault, and see its entire col-

The museum's newest exhibit, The Art of Utility, focuses on pickup trucks and shows their evolution from functional workhorse to high-profile personal expression. The exhibit, scheduled to run through April of 2014, features such iconic as a 1909 International Harvester, 1953 Dodge Swivel Frame, 1958 Ford Ranchero and a number of other vintage and modern vehicles. The museum first two floors house its rotating exhibits, as well as several permanent exhibitions, including a gallery of famous cars from movies and television, a collection of hundreds of Hot Wheels toy cars, and an exhibit named Alternative Power, featuring past, present and future alternatives to there
