The California City Parks and Recreation Department invites area residents to its annual Renaissance Fair, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19 and 20. Set in 1532, the fair features acting, vendors, traditional food, music, dancing and more. California City Central Park, 10460 Heather Ave., will be the stage for the event through the weekend. The storyline of the weekend follows King Henry VIII, accompanied by Anne Boleyn. The event website, CalCityRenFair.org, gives the following synopsis: “For the last nine years, Henry has been courting a woman by the name of Anne Boleyn. Anne is a sophisticated woman, having been raised in the courts of the Archduchess of Austria and the Queen of France. She is also very learned in the New Faith, which might hold the answers that Henry is looking for in his quest to end his marriage to Catherine. He can finally marry Anne, making her the next Queen of England. This will possibly bring him what he most desires... a legitimate male heir to the throne of England.” John Bloom, guilde master of the Guilde of Sainte Marie, is heading the historical entertainment and will be playing King Henry

VIII at the festival. “Catherine of Aragon will be there, but she is disposed,” Bloom said. “She is now known as the Dowager Princess of Wales. And we have the queen of the consort, who has not been officially been made queen, but this is the year...that Henry announced his engagement to Anne Boleyn and the fact that he intended to marry her.” Recreation director Brenda Daverin described the goal of the event. “We do this fair to promote the Arts and History,” Daverin said. “This is a family-friendly event. As we have more technology in this world, it is more fun to see how things used to be, such as period dress and handmade items by ancient craftsmen.” Merchant vendors will sell items like jewelry, 3-D wood puzzles, fantasy weapons, hair garlands, pirate gear, hats, spices, home remedies and children’s garb. Available food includes turkey legs, corn on the cob, bangers, dragon meat (like a sloppy joe), Chinese barbecue, Greek salads and gyros. Daverin said popular activities among children are climbing on Grandpa Morgan’s pirate ship, seeing a Norse Viking ship replica, learning to duel with the “Dueling Dames” theater group, and practicing archery.

Actors, vendors, traditional food, music, dancing and more will again bedazzle audiences at this year’s Rennaissance Festival, held in California City’s Central Park, Oct. 19 and 20. The High Desert Club will also have a model train show, Daverin said. “It is kind of a drive to get to California City so we wanted the extra incentive to have patrons make the trip,” Daverin said. “This show takes two days to set up the display. It is no small feat to have a continuous track around the edge of the basketball gym. The Train Show Club loves an audience and wanted to share its 3-D art with as much as the public as pos-

sible.” A diorama of the Renaissance Fair will also be on display. The replica was created by Cal City councilman Chuck McGuire and won first place and best in show in its category at the Antelope Valley Fair. Admission tickets cost $5 but are $1 off for students and seniors and children under age 5 are free. Contact Daverin for more information on the event, 760-373-3530, or visit CalCityRenFair.com.

Local musicians to join Tim and Myles Thompson in concert Oct. 18 BY PETER CUTLER CONTRIBUTING WRITER

The Fiddlers Crossing concert at St. Jude’s Anglican Church, featuring Tim and Myles Thompson, on Friday, Oct. 18, will have a home-grown element. The father-son, guitar-fiddle duo have asked for a local string quartet to accompany them on some of their original tunes. The quartet will include members of both the Tehachapi Symphony and the Tehachapi POPS orchestra.

Jaress Loo and Molly Sponsler, from the Tehachapi Symphony, will be the violinists. Marci Maynard, concert mistress of TPOPS and a member of the Bakersfield Symphony, will play viola, and Fiddlers Crossing’s own Deborah Hand will be the cellist. Deborah also plays bass for TPOPS. “We’re all thrilled and honored to be playing with the Thompson’s,” said Hand. “The music is beautiful, glorious – a mix of

jazz and Celtic, and totally infectious. It should appeal to everyone.” The Thompson’s have shared concert billing with such performers as Spyro Gyro and Phil Keaggy. They have performed at the prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival, and frequently give workshops in schools and colleges. Now, four of our local musicians will have the honor of sharing the stage at St. Jude’s church with these outstanding performers.

St. Jude’s in the Mountains Anglican Church is at 1200 S. Curry St. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at Mountain Music, next to Fiddlers Crossing at 206 E. “F” St.; Tehachapi Treasure Trove, 116 E. Tehachapi Blvd.; Tehachapi Furniture in Old Town, 20346 W. Valley Blvd., or with a credit card by calling 823-9994 (add $1 per ticket for processing with a credit card). The concert begins at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

(Family Features) Autumn brings colorful foliage and perfect weather for entertaining indoors and out. As you plan your fall gatherings, consider stopping by your local farmers market to pick up all the ingredients necessary for preparing a savory home cooked feast that's sure to please any crowd. See how local inspiration and fresh ingredients led celebrity Chef Tim Love to create his most recent recipes. Every fall, Chef Love takes inspiration from the end of summer harvest to create unique dishes, like his latest recipe for Balsamic Turkey Meatloaf with Balsamic Mayonnaise. Ripe fall vegetables are the inspiration for his Grilled Chicken Thighs with Sweet Potato-Balsamic Salad and his Grilled Brussels Sprouts with Balsamic Mayonnaise. All three recipes include Hellmann's Creamy Balsamic Mayonnaise Dressing, which combines the rich, great taste of Hellmann's that you love with a touch of sweet, aged balsamic vinegar. Whether you're hosting a casual evening with friends or having the whole family over for a relaxing Sunday afternoon, these simple recipes are perfect for any occasion. Pair the dishes with clean table decor and your favorite refreshing beverages for an easy evening of entertaining. Carry a traditional theme throughout the tablescape by using mismatched plates, cutlery and glasses. Tie napkins and cutlery together with twine, and then tuck in a little bouquet of fresh herbs from the garden to add a dash of color and homegrown goodness. For a daytime gathering, take the dining table outside to enjoy the beautiful fall weather and final weeks of grilling season. Lay out a blanket for the kids to picnic, and add a few games to keep them entertained. Savor the season by enjoying delicious meals and lasting memories in the company of your loved ones. For more recipes, visit www.Hellmanns.com.

Gardening Time

Six steps to a beautiful landscape next season BY MELINDA MYERS CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Don’t let a busy schedule stop you from creating a beautiful landscape. Incorporate a few of these changes in your fall landscape care. You’ll create beautiful results with a limited investment of time and effort. Cut the grass, recycle fall leaves, and improve the soil with a pass of the lawn mower. Shred leaves and leave them on the lawn as you mow this fall. As long as you can see the grass through the leaf pieces, the lawn will be fine. As the leaves break down they add organic matter to the soil, improving drainage in clay soil and water holding ability in sandy soils.

Or, as an alternative, use excess leaves as a soil mulch. Shred the leaves with your mower and spread a layer over the soil to conserve moisture and insulate the roots of perennials. Fall mulching gives you a jump on next spring’s landscape chores. Improve your lawn’s health by fertilizing this fall with a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer, like Milorganite. You’ll reduce the risk of disease problems and with slower weed growth in fall, your lawn, not the weeds, will benefit from the nutrients. Fall fertilization also helps lawns recover from the stresses of summer by encouraging deep roots and denser growth that can better compete with

weeds and tolerate disease and insects. Northern gardeners can follow the holiday schedule and fertilize Labor Day and Halloween. Southern gardeners should make their last fall fertilization at least 30 days before the lawn goes dormant or the average first killing frost to avoid winter kill. Do a bit of planting. Cool season annuals brighten up the fall garden and, for those in warmer regions, the winter garden. Consider adding cold hardy pansies. They provide color in the fall garden, survive most winters, and are back blooming in the spring just as the snow melts. Fall is also a good time See A BEAUTIFUL/Page 11

The Weekender — Wednesday, October 16, 2013

A beautiful landscape with a limited investment Continued from page 10 to plant perennials, trees and shrubs. The soil is warm and the air cooler, so the plants are less stressed and establish more quickly. Select plants suited to the growing conditions and be sure to give them plenty of room to reach their mature size. Plant daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and other bulbs in fall for extra color next spring. Set the bulbs at a depth of two to three times their height deep. Then cover them with soil and sprinkle on a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer. This type of fertilizer promotes rooting without stimulating fall growth subject to winter kill. Base your bulb planting time on the weather not the calendar. Start plant-

ing after the night-time temperatures hover between 40 and 50 degrees. Be patient, waiting until the soil cools reduces the risk of early sprouting that often occurs during a warm fall. Those gardening in the far south and along the gulf coast can purchase pre-cooled bulbs to compensate for the warm winters. Or the chilling can be done at home by storing the bulbs in a 35 to 45 degree location for at least 14 weeks before planting. Leave healthy perennials stand for winter. This increases hardiness and adds beauty to the winter landscape with their seed heads, dried foliage and the birds they attract. Plus, it will delay cleanup until spring when gardeners are

anxious to get outdoors and start gardening. However, be sure to remove any diseased or insect-infested plants to reduce the source of pest problems in next year’s garden. Start composting or add shredded leaves and other plant debris to an existing compost pile. Combine fall leaves with other plant waste, a bit of soil or compost, and sprinkle with fertilizer to create compost. Recycling yard waste saves time bagging, hauling and disposing of green debris. You also reduce or eliminate the need to buy soil amendments to improve your existing garden soil. Incorporate one or all six of these practices to increase the health and beauty of your landscape

now and for years to come. MELINDA MYERS has more than 30 years of horticulture experience and has written over 20 gardening books, including Can’t Miss Small Space Gardening. She hosts the nationally syndicated Melinda’s Garden Moment segments and is a columnist and contributing editor for Birds & Blooms magazine.
