TEHACHAPI’S OWN PHONE BOOK

INTRODUCTION Dear Friends, Tehachapi’s Own Phonebook, your local phonebook since 1963, is once again proud to publish your directory of business and residential listings. We strive to provide not just a telephone book, but an informational guide for the community and our friends who choose to visit this beautiful area. In combination with the Tehachapi News, published every Tuesday, and The Weekender, published every Friday, the TOP Book, the Tehachapi Visitor Guide and our websites, www.TehachapiNews.com and www.TehachapiBuyandSell.com provide the Greater Tehachapi Area with a comprehensive source of news and information. Please remember to shop locally and use to local service providers throughout the coming year. Together, we can build a strong and vital community. Wishing you continued success, Claudia Elliott and the Staff of Tehachapi’s Own Phonebook 50th Anniversary Edition Tehachapi’s Own Phone Book A Local Tradition Since 1963 The telephone directory you hold in your hand — Tehachapi’s Own Phone Book — began when Al and Winifred Small, the founders of Tehachapi Lumber Company, published hometown listings of residents because the phone company book published names so small that many people could not read them. “My dad’s eyesight was failing,” said Bob Small, who later (with his brother Gary) bought the company from his father. The “Lumber Company phone book” became a ready reference for local numbers and the Small family continued to publish the book for a number of years. Eventually, Paul Benz entered the picture, assisting the Small family and gaining an advertisement for Benz Sanitation on the back page.

Every effort has been made to obtain and reprint the most accurate and complete information from the available sources. Tehachapi News cannot and will not guarantee the information’s completeness. Therefore Tehachapi News assumes no responsibility for same, or for errors or omission or the presence of unintentional inclusions.

By 1991, the project had grown too large for the Smalls and Bill and Betty Mead, then publishers of the Tehachapi News, took over publishing the homegrown phone book, renaming it “Tehachapi’s Own Phone Book” or “TOP.” The Meads continued to expand and improve the book that is not only Tehachapi’s original local phone book, but also a hometown favorite. When the Meads sold the Tehachapi News, the TOP Phone Book was part of the deal and continues to be an important part of the Tehachapi News family of publications.
