Teaching English as a Foreign Language - TEFL Certification Teaching English as a foreign language has created exiting opportunities for English speaking graduates to travel the world and experience exotic cultures. Asia in particular, has become a major draw card for graduates from the USA, Canada, England, Wales, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. As the need for English language education grows, so does the need for TEFL or TESOL teachers. Teachers come and go, and that means that there is an ongoing market for new teachers. TEFL and TESOL are acronyms for "Teaching English as a Foreign Language" and "Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. There are also other acronyms like ESL (English as a Second Language) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language), but the latter two acronyms do not refer to a qualification as such but rather to language teaching as a discipline. Then ever growing demand for TEFL and TESOL certified teachers around the world, is owing to the increasing usage of English as a second, and international language. The TEFL qualification can get you an English teaching job in non-native English-speaking countries like Japan, China and Hong Kong, Taiwan, Turkey, Spain, Vietnam, Malaysia, Korea (South), Chile, Mexico and United Arab Emirates, only to name a few. There are literally thousands of TEFL jobs abroad for certified TEFL teachers. It is a very handy and sought after qualification to have if you are planning to travel abroad. The certification will allow you to apply for decent paying teaching jobs in the mentioned countries, which can fund your travels. Every year that you teach, adds to experience and you will find yourself more marketable, especially in countries like The Arab Emirates, Spain, Taiwan, Japan and even South Korea. If you are planning on teaching English as a foreign language in a non-native English speaking country, you have to be aware that TEFL Certification has become a standard requirement. Please note that it is not a minimum requirement in some countries as yet, but the trend is that more and more English Schools and Academies are asking for such a qualification when advertising their jobs. Countries like South Korea and China do not have TEFL Certification as a minimum requirement, but you must hold a Bachelors’ degree for purposes of obtaining a working visa. Even though you do not need to be TEFL certified to qualify for a visa, you could be asked by your potential employer to get one. Having said that, please bear in mind that minimum qualification requirements differ from country to country. As mentioned, some countries, like The Arab Emirates, China and South Korea requires a minimum of a Bachelors’ degree, while other countries may only require a TEFL or TESOL qualification. Ensure that you make an informed decision about the best place to teach English and what the specific minimum requirements for that country are.
