More golfers should have a ďŹ t if their clubs aren’t working for them In case you haven’t noticed, the days of buying new clubs and going right to the course to play are gone. Don’t even consider purchasing the latest and greatest equipment just because you saw your favorite pro playing it on tour.

You’d be foolish to spend all that money without getting fitted.

You have to get more knowledgeable about your equipment I’m Up and more importantly Marty Perlmutter know your “smash factor.� The more you know about your swing and clubs, the better off you are going to be in either purchasing a new set or having someone like Richard Conragan of Putter Around adjust the clubs you presently use.

Conragan started working in club repair and fitting long before it became fashionable, and has been in business more than 29 years at different locations around South Florida. If you are in business that long, you have to be doing something right.

As a former mini-tour player who came close to getting through Q-school a couple of times, Conragan is not your everyday pro looking to sell you the $1,000 driver or the $400 putter. Instead, he would ask you to spend a $150 to be in front of his FlightScope, a three-dimensional launch monitor that is far more than just a launch monitor.

It should be when you consider the going price for the equipment is about $11,000.

Conragan will be able to tell you if the clubs you are using are the right ones for your swing and could, with a couple of alterations, have you hitting the ball on a part of the club that you thought didn’t exist – the sweet spot.

Last month, he invited The Tee Times to be his guest for a session at his location behind Broward College on Coconut Creek Parkway, just west of the turnpike.

After a couple of my swings – and dismal shots – Conragan explained how little things will change the ball flight, and pointed to a flat-panel television where a chart indicated everything (and more) that you would want to know about what just happened.

As someone who enjoys technology, but really never understood how a computer can help someone break 100, I listened respectfully as Conragan pointed out my smash factor, which is the relationship between club-head speed and ball speed and how it “helps us determine the proper shaft for the individual. “Ball speed should be 1½ times clubhead speed,â€? Conragan said.

(At the PGA Show in January, Bridgestone had a ball fitting and after a couple of swings, showed me my club-head speed was below the national speed limit on the interstate highways.)

Conragan asked me to se aside the 10-degree Callaway FT-5 driver, which I never had had fitted, and try the new Taylor Made R11-series driver which had a different shaft. FlightScope had already shown that previous attempts at reaching 200 yards with the Callaway had failed.

With its 12-degree loft and more flexible shaft, my distance jumped to more than 210 yards. All of a sudden, golf was good again.

He pointed to the monitor and explained that my club head speed increased by more than 10 mph, which in turn changed all of the other numbers associated with the shot.

The spin numbers came down, the carry distance went up and the only thing I did was change clubs. Conragan said the distance would have been more if I had been using See I’m Up, page 20

Paluzzi said. “Now, players put their cards in a small cigar box in the lounge and I prepare the weekly handicaps on a computer.�

The League plays on Tuesday nights, with a 5:30 twilight tee-off. Although the League has veteran core teams and players, the long season requires Captains to find new players who want to play on a regular or sub basis.

The IGL will have an organizational meeting in mid-March and will begin the season in early April.

Focus on getting better scores with better pitching

By Lee Stroever The more golfers I spend time with, the more I think we have golf instruction all wrong.

Golfers will come and see me for a lesson and 9 out of 10 times suggest that we focus on their full swing. While there is value in improving your full swing technique, there is a quicker way to lower scores … improve your pitching.

Among the students I see, their weakest part typically is their pitching. Because most amateur golfers will pitch the ball 9-15 times each round, this presents a huge opportunity for us to cut strokes immediately.

First, you need to understand what we are trying to accomplish when pitching the ball. We want to hit a shot up in the air that will stop relatively quickly (depending on how much green there is between you and the hole).

The biggest mistake golfers make is trying to scoop the ball into the air, which results in fat or thin shots. With this motion, they are swinging up on the ball instead of down. The pitching fundamentals below will allow you to properly hit down on the ball and will save you strokes today.

Setup ◗ The width of your stance will be narrow and you should be square to your target line, or just barely open (I see most golfers open their bodies too much). ◗ Your ball position will be between your back foot and the center of your torso, with your hands hanging in front of your belt buckle. ◗ Roughly 60 percent of your weight should be on your lead leg. ◗ Start with your clubface square to the target. (As you improve, you can try opening the face slightly to add height to the shot.)

determined by how far you are trying to fly the ball and what club you are using. ◗ The important thing to remember is that we need to hinge the club slightly on the backswing, while keeping the majority of our weight on the lead leg. Avoid having your wrists completely stiff, and avoid playing the shot with a wrist-heavy motion.

Finish ◗ A simple way to insure that you are properly swinging down on the ball is to create a good finish position. In this position, your body will be turned toward the target, which should allow you to finish with a flat lead wrist (with your chest and belt buckle facing the target). ◗ You will also have the majority of your weight over your lead leg.

With a little bit of practice, you will be able to have a simple pitching motion that will allow you to hit down on the ball. Remember, a little wrist hinge in the backswing and then turn your chest toward the target in the through-swing.

Follow the steps above and I know you will shave a few strokes off of your score immediately.

ATLANTIS – The South Florida PGA Junior Tour calendar has rolled over to 2012, and Boynton Beach’s Derron Peyton has kicked it off by continuing the success he had in 2011.

Peyton, the 2011 Player of the Year, shot a second round 68 to come from behind and win Event #1, played Feb. 4-5 at Club Med at Sandpiper Bay. A sold out field of 104 juniors competed to start the 2012 season.

He finished at 142, a stroke better than Key West’s Evan DeRoche and Stuart’s Dominick Vennari.

In the Girls’ Overall division, Boca Raton’s Alexandra Papell – the Most Improved Player from the 2012 Honda Classic, won her title by seven strokes. Boynton Beach’s Ashley Burke and Wellington’s Shyanne Lovan tied for second with a two-day score of 157.

Delray Beach’s Eduardo Blochtein (148) won Boys 12-13 by a stroke ahead of two players: Boynton Beach’s David Giandomenico and Palm Beach Gardens’ Andrew Kozan.

Add a little iron to your driving range diet Because of the business I’m in, I attend a lot of different demo days. I was at one last month, and there were several vendors showing off the latest equipment.

What amazes me is that 95 percent of the people there are hitting drivers. The other 5 percent hit fairway woods. It seems like everyone is looking for that little extra distance.

Don’t get me wrong, The Golf Guy the driver is an imBruce Bard portant part of the bag, but if you think about it you are only going to use it about 13 times a round (maybe more with a few provisional).

Now, I can clear a condo as well as the

next guy but I need more greens in regulation to help my game. Hitting my driver 13 times means I have more than 80 mores strokes to complete my round. I could care less if I’m the first one to hit his second shot because all my buddies have outdriven me as long as I have a second shot and am not hitting three off the tee.

To me, I need to get better at those 150yard iron shots to hit the greens and set up my three putts. So next time you go to a demo day, ask to hit the latest irons on the market and just imagine the improvements in your game.

Drive smarter

reason I just don’t hit my drive like Bubba Watson does. Of course I never did, but let’s face it: As we get older, the ball just doesn’t seem to carry as far. I have no reason to play a 440-yard par 4 if I only hit my drive 220 yards. For some reason, the guys I play with won’t let me re-tee from the fairway.

The PGA suggests the following: Jf you hit your driver 275 yards, you should be playing from 6,700 to 6,900 yards. If you hit it 250 yards, you should be playing 6,200 to 6,400 yards. If you drive 225 yards, you should be at 5,800 to 6,000 yards.

Give it a try. You might find more fun and a faster round.

FSGA offers golf rules seminars The Florida State Golf Association has released the 2012 Rules of Golf Seminar schedule. The next seminars to be held in South Florida will take place March 12-13 at Ironhorse CC in West Palm Beach.

The FSGA will conduct several Rules of Golf Seminars across the state. From 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., participants will partake in indoor classroom instruction with a stateof-the art video presentation, plus outdoor hands-on sessions. All workshops are instructed by FSGA staff members.

Fans will be allowed to use their cell phones to make calls only at designated areas of the facility, which will be identified as Verizon Wireless Phone Zones. The Zones will be located primarily at concession stand areas. Fans will be allowed to receive and send text messages and check data on the course. Photos will not be allowed from Thursday on. Grab your putter and compete for the Palm Beach County title Pros and amateurs alike will battle it out at the John Prince Golf Learning Center in Lake Worth as it hosts the fifth Annual Palm Beach County Putting Championship on March 24.

The Saturday event starts at 10 a.m. and also will include a Free Putting Clinic at 10:45.

All events are open to the public and proceeds will benefit the Junior Golf Foundation of America, which Palm Beach Notes supports junior golf Gary Curreri programs in Palm Beach County (www.thejgfa.com).

“We always have a lot of kids come out, but it is a great event for adults as well,” said Ryan Alvino, who has been the PGA Head Golf Professional at the Learning Center for the past three years. “We will get about 100 spread out throughout the day.”

Golfers, who want to show off their putting skills, have come from as far as Miami and Jupiter, according to Alvino, who has been recognized as a US Kids Golf Top 50 Instructor.

The event was the brainchild of Mark Mayette, who was at the John Prince Learning Center as the head pro at the time, and Mike McLellan, Director of Golf at Indian Spring CC.

“It was pretty small in the beginning,” Alvino said. “We started to add different things to try and grow it. We have a skills challenge and we decided to do a free clinic, which had never been done in previous years.”

Alvino said they are always looking for new ideas to make the putting course as challenging as possible.

“We also want to make it fun,” Avino added. “It’s not overboard as far as the competition goes. It’s definitely very challenging. A lot of juniors who have gone off and played in college – either on a golf scholarship or an academic scholarship – have played in our program.

Golfers are welcome to go around the nine-hole layout as many times as they would like. They then enter a qualifying score to earn a spot in the 18-hole final later in the day.

There are divisions for professionals, men, women and seniors, plus two junior divisions.

Alvino said members of his staff as well as other PGA Professionals around South Florida have come out to show their support.

“It has been a great turnout for the past few years,” Alvino said.

It’s Blue Monster time again as the PGA Tour reaches Doral The Blue Monster is all dressed up and looking spiffier than ever. And the field for the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship at Doral Golf Resort & Spa, March 8-11, is also looking good.

“Typically, we have one of the strongest fields in golf,” tournament executive director Eddie Carbone said. “And our field looks to be excellent this year.” That would Miami-Dade Notes be an understatement.

“We expect to have players entered from possibly 20 countries,” Carbone said. “It’s fitting, at least to me, that we have an international event like this in what I think is the most international city in the Western Hemisphere. Also, our crowds are very

reflective of that. We get large attendance from the various Latin communities that are so prominent in South Florida. We also have folks from our neighbor to the north – Canada. And Miami is also a big destination for Europe. It’s really fitting to have a World Golf Championships event here.”

Longtime S. Florida superintendent Bondeson dies in N.Carolina at age 71 The passing of Paul Bondeson was barely noted locally but for a 3-inch obituary in the Stuart News on Jan. 25. He died Nov. 27, 2011, at the Murphy, N.C., Medical Center at the age of 71. He had lived in Hobe Sound for 20 years Bondeson, at one time a touring pro who reportedly battled issues with alcohol, went to work for architects Robert von Treasure Coast Notes Hagge and Bruce Devlin in the early 1970s Larry Bush as a course superintendent at some of their properties. Subsequently, he worked for such South Florida courses as Jupiter Hills, LaGorce, Loblolly Pines, Mariner Sands and Turtle Creek, and helped Wayne Huizenga grow in his aforementioned Floridian in Palm City. “I don’t know why but I just have this instinct about growing grass,� he said in an interview in 2003. “Being a greenskeeper is more stressful than playing tournament golf because there’s always fourth or fifth or 20th place. If you make a mistake as a greenskeeper, you may be out of a job.�

Bondeson played six full seasons beginning in 1962 but never finished better than 50th on the money list. “Paul had his demons, but boy, what potential,� Jack Nicklaus once said. Bondeson and Nicklaus came up through junior golf as friendly rivals.

In the seventh tournament of his rookie season on the PGA Tour, the inaugural Doral Open in Miami in 1962, Bondeson led Billy Casper by four strokes with seven holes to play but couldn’t hold on ‌ a couple of double bogeys, a birdie by Casper at 17 and Bondeson’s 10-foot birdie putt at 18 that burned the edge of the cup.

Bondeson finished second, 73-284 to Casper’s 71-283. Nicklaus was third at 285, followed by Ben Hogan and Ted Kroll at 286. Among the top five, Hogan was low on Sunday with 69.

Bondeson suffered crippling injuries in an automobile accident in 2001 in Murphy and spent his last 10 years in a wheelchair as a quadriplegic.

Other recent losses in the golf community: ◗ Joel Pyle of Stuart, president of the Martin County G&CC in 1996 and 2000, on Dec. 5 at the age of 82. ◗ Michael Nichols of Barefoot Bay, head professional at Sebastian GC for 12 years, on Jan. 13 at the age of 43. ◗ Bill Marx of Jupiter and West Bloomfield, Mich., director of instruction at Tam O’Shanter CC in West Bloomfield, on Jan. 29 at the age of 59. During the 1980s and ’90s, Marx was head professional at Schoenenberg GC in Zurich, Switzerland, and an assistant national trainer for the Swiss ladies and girls national teams. Earlier in January, he played in both the PGA Quarter Century and PGA Senior Stroke Play championships at the PGA GC in Port St. Lucie, cashing checks in both events. ◗ Jacques Houdry of West Palm Beach, on Feb. 6 at the age of 86. He played in several major championships as an amateur

including two U.S. Opens, the British Open and also the French Open, and was a member of the Royal & Ancient GC of St. Andrews, the Everglades Club in Palm Beach and other prestigious clubs.

Stuart’s Buelow to Futures Tour Alexandria Buelow of Stuart will forgo her final year of eligibility on the Stetson University golf team and begin her professional career on the Futures Tour in May. She played well enough on the Futures Tour as an amateur last summer that she can bypass qualifying. Because she was dual-enrolled at Stetson while still at Martin County High School, she is on schedule to graduate in May. Buelow won the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament once and was a two-time conference Player of the Year. She twice won individual honors at the state high school tournament and in 2009 won both the match play and stroke play championships of the Florida Women’s State GA.

Fort Pierce’s Hearn honored Tom Hearn of Fort Pierce, a top minitour player in South Florida in the 1990s who later played on the PGA and Nationwide tours, was chosen the Golf Professional of the Year by the Nebraska PGA Section for 2011. Since 2006, Hearn has been rules official on the PGA Tour. He graduated from Fort Pierce’s Westwood High School in 1983 and the University of Miami in 1987.

House swap Dan Wood and Bob Zimmerman were once rivals in North Florida PGA tournaments, the latter getting the edge a couple of times by winning the Section Seniors Championships of 1998-99. But lately they have been all about trading houses in Port St. Lucie.

While playing in the PGA Winter National Championships in January, Wood and his wife, Sally, visited the Zimmermans, who had a home at the PGA CC. “I love this place,� Sally reportedly exclaimed as she walked in the front door.

Looking to downsize, Zimmerman said, in effect, “make me an offer I can’t refuse.�

While the Woods were looking for investment property, the Zimmermans still had to have a place to live. Hence, at Wood’s invitation, the Zimmermans picked out a condo on the Wanamaker course at the PGA Golf Club, Wood purchased it and are now renting it back to the Zimmermans. In turn, they bought the Zimmermans home at the country club and consider it their Florida home.

A few years ago, Dan Wood sold the Winter Springs Golf Club near Orlando, where he had been the pro-owner, and returned to Ithaca, N.Y., where he was raised. In the 1970s, he had been the soccer and tennis coach at Cornell University, also in Ithaca.

Dan and Sally are currently co-coaches of the women’s golf team at Ithaca College.

Walters’ wonderful work encourages people to follow their dreams

By Gary Curreri Pompano Beach’s Caroline Maya wasn’t sure what to expect when she saw Dennis Walters sitting in his wheelchair on the Deerfield Park Elementary School basketball courts.

Walters then pulled out a golf club and started hitting golf balls. His dog, Bucky, started running down a tennis ball, first thrown by Walters and then by the 150 students in attendance.

“I didn’t think he could play when I first saw him,” said Maya, a fourth-grader at the school, who had played golf once before on a school field trip. “I was like, ‘Why is he in a chair and then not standing up?’ He’s very good. I like the ball that blew up at the end.”

Walters, who was left paralyzed from the waist down in 1974, put on a show. The 62-year-old Jupiter man has averaged 90100 shows a year and has put on more than 3,000 shows in his 38-year career.

“I was really amazed,” Maya said, “because I don’t think I would do that if I was in a wheelchair.”

Deerfield Park physical education teacher Shelton Smith said this is the annual field trip that the school generally attends in Boca Raton.

“They weren’t able to hold it there this year,” Smith said. “They called me and asked if they could bring it here to the school.”

“They wanted us to bring out as many grades as we could,” Smith added. “We usually take 50 kids up there. My principal thought it would be nice to make it an incentive for third, fourth and fifth grade so they could improve on their academics. The students that scored three or higher on the mock, standardized FCAT tests were allowed to come out.”

Smith said they were able to involve more children this year.

“This was wonderful because we were able to present this to a lot of the other kids who wouldn’t have been able to go,” Smith said. “This also gave us a chance to introduce different sports to our children. Usually they are more accustomed to the football and basketball. They usually don’t hear much about golf. I actually teach them golf one month out of the year … This is awesome. It is inspirational for the students and the adults as well. I am actually going back to school to get my masters in education in April and you really just have to follow your

dreams and never let anything deter you.”

Walters, a PGA of America honorary member, annually visits the Don Law Golf Academy in Boca Raton, affording young students in Palm Beach County with an opportunity to hear his message of inspiration.

For the past seven years, with the help of PGA Professional Don Law, his wife Diana, the entire staff at the Don Law Golf Academy and Walters’ sponsors, Jersey Mikes and Jelly Belly, thousands of young children in Palm Beach County have had an opportunity to be wowed by Dennis’ show and this time it was no different.

Walters’ show lasted one hour and featured the most amazing golf tricks, a message of inspiration, along with a special performance by Bucky, Dennis’ super dog and See Walters, page 22

Sunbelt Senior Tour kicks off S. Florida run at TPC Eagle Trace The Sunbelt Senior Professional Tour, a developmental tour for seniors, is headed to the TPC Eagle Trace in Coral Springs.

The Coral Springs Open is slated for April 2-5 and is one of two South Florida tour stops. It is also planning the Fort Lauderdale Open on April 10-13 at a yet unnamed course.

The Sunbelt Senior Tour has been the No. 1 Tour for players approaching and playing Broward Notes on the Champions Tour Gary Curreri and has been staging events since 1996.

In 17 years, the SST has paid more than $4 million in purses and helped raise more than $1million for charity. All of this was the brainchild of Don Barnes, a PGA of America golf pro who saw a need and ran with the idea.

“The Sunbelt Senior Tour is comprised of Champions Tour Members who play our Tour on a regular basis, past PGA Tour Players that are staying sharp preparing for their future spot on the Champions Tour, and its members that are trying to earn their first shot at proving their game,” Barnes said. “It provides a much-needed training ground.”

There will be a free Long Drive Exhibition and Junior Clinic on April 1. The clinic will start at approximately 5 p.m., with the Long Drive Exhibition at 6. The Pro-Am, April 2, is scheduled to start at 1:30.

Pompano Beach work to start soon The city of Pompano Beach is finalizing plans to begin construction for the Municipal Golf Course’s facelift.

The course still will be designed by the Greg Norman Golf Course Design Company as planned last year. The project was delayed a year when the construction company that was the lowest bidder submitted an incomplete proposal, so the City had to reject the bid and re-advertise for construction. Sandra King, City of Pompano Communications Director, said groundbreaking still is scheduled for April 1.

“The contract has been executed by the contractor and has been submitted to the city clerk’s office for executing by city officials,” King said. The contractor is Quality Grassing & Services, Inc., of Lithia. The construction would take about eight months and the course would reopen in November.”

Said Mayor Lamar Fisher: “Not only does the City of Pompano Beach have a municipal golf course less than a mile from the beach, but it is soon going to be a Greg Norman-designed course. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

Rick Case Classic at Inverrary Inverrary CC will host the eighth annual Rick Case Golf Classic on March 30.

Rick and Rita Case organized the event to bring together South Florida corporations, organizations and individuals for the sole purpose of generating money to support the

ongoing mission of the Prestige Club.

“This year we intend to expand the classic by having a golf tournament for studentathletes who play for their high school team,” said Stan Bostic Director Corporate Partners and VIP Program. The Rick Case Inaugural High School Tournament will be played on the same day as the Rick Case Golf Classic.

“Students must be registered full-time and belong to their high school golf team.”

Each team registered must have a sponsor. This can be a local corporation, organization or individual. The cost for a foursome will be a donation made payable to the Prestige Club in the amount of $1,000. The top three teams will earn for their school a scholarship from the Prestige Club that will be given to students who play golf at the school, have been involved in community service and are graduating student-athletes who will be going on to a higher education.

Dixie Am champs get exemptions The winners of the 2012 men’s and women’s Dixie Amateur will receive an exemption into their respective Canadian Amateur championship.

“Our goal with exemptions is to always provide the most competitive fields for our national amateur championships,” said Brent McLaughlin, Golf Canada’s Director of Rules, Competitions and Amateur Status.

“We regularly review our exemption categories and believe that extending these exemptions to the Dixie Amateur champions beginning in 2013 will lead to stronger fields and more exciting championships.”

“We are thrilled Golf Canada has such high regard for the Dixie Amateur that they would make this generous offer,” Dixie Amateur Tournament Director Dave Salerno said. “To be exempt into Canada’s national championship is a very special honor.”

Golf Canada invited the 2011 Dixie champs, Curtis Thompson and Paula Reto, both of Coral Springs, to play in Canada’s national amateur championships this summer. The women will compete July 24-27 at the Lethbridge CC in Alberta and the men Aug. 7-10 at Camelot GCC and Club de golf Outaouais in the Ottawa, Ontario, area.

The winner of the Canadian Men’s Amateur receives an exemption into the RBC Canadian Open, a PGA Tour event, and the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur champion is exempt into the CN Canadian Women’s Open, an LPGA event.

This year, the men’s Dixie Amateur will take place Dec. 18-21 at Heron Bay GC in Coral Springs and Woodlands CC in Tamarac. The women will play Dec. 28-Jan. 1 at Heron Bay. The Dixie is organized and conducted by ClubLink, which owns Heron Bay, Woodlands, and more than 50 other courses in Florida, Ontario, and Quebec.

Miami Beach’s Bryans capture FSGA Winter Series title Rob Bryans of Miami Beach won the Florida State Golf Association Winter Series event that was held Feb. 6-7 at Madison Green Golf Club in Royal Palm Beach.

He was joined in the winner’s circle by Robert Casamento and James Byer, who won the Senior and Super Senior divisions respectively.

South Floridians claimed all three runner-up finishes: Pembroke Pines’ Nick Fernandez was second in the main flight, with Lake Worth’s Bill O’Keefe (76-67–143) second in 55-64 and Pompano Beach’s Bill Dorece (75-75–150) second in 65-and-up.

Bryans went wire-to-wire to win the 4054 Division. He carded a first-round 3-over par 75 for a one-stroke lead. Bryans posted a final round of 1-over par 73, for a tournament total of 148 and a four-stroke victory over Fernandez (77-75).

Two more South Floridians rounded out the top five, with West Palm Beach’s Stevenson Clarke (82-74–156) fourth and Davie’s Kevin Kim (79-79–158) fifth.

In the Senior Division, Davenport’s Casamento shot 4-under par 140 to win by three strokes. In the first round Casamento carded a 3-under par 69, and finished strong in a final round of 1-under par 71 to win. O’Keefe made a big push on the second day – his 67 was low round of the tournament – but he could not overtake Casamento.

Among Super Seniors, Byer came from behind to win by three strokes with a tournament total of 147. Byer, a past Super Senior Champion, carded a first round threeover par 75 and trailed by one heading into the final round. In that round, Byer posted an even par round of 72 to capture the title. Dorece finished alone in second. West Palm Beach’s John Baldwin finished T3, another stroke back.

The Winter Series events include seven competitions, six individual events and one four-ball event. There are three age divisions, Mid-Senior (40-54), Senior (55-64) and Super Senior (65 & over). The Winter

Series is a great opportunity for golfers to compete in competitive events that normally may not because they do not live in Florida year round. ◗ Stuart’s Lee King (71-73–144) lost in a playoff in the Senior Division of the Feb. 20-21 Winter Series event at Windermere CC. Melbourne’s Dennis Brady matched Brady at the end of both rounds. Brady

won the playoff with a birdie on the second playoff hole. In 40-54, Clarke (76-75–151) and Palm City’s Andy Spears (78-73–151) finished T3. In 65-and-over, the top South Florida finisher was Coral Gables’ Lincoln Rodon (80-73–153), who ended up sixth.

PALM BEACH GARDENS – Catching his breath after a trip nearly halfway around the world to compete in Abu Dhabi, Luke Donald returned to his winter home Tuesday to a reception at PGA of America Headquarters, where he received two carryover awards from a banner 2011 season.

The world’s No. 1-ranked player, Donald spends his winters in Palm Beach Gardens, and was honored by PGA staff as he picked up his first PGA of America Player of the Year Award and Vardon Trophy. Donald captured both awards last season, becoming the first native of England to win both in the same year. He is just the second Briton to earn the Vardon Trophy, based upon lowest adjusted scoring average and first presented to “Lighthorse� Harry Cooper in 1937.

The PGA Player of the Year, first presented in 1948, was last presented to a native Briton in 1990 when Nick Faldo earned the honor. “It means everything, that’s why we play the game, to try and write history and to try and get our names on trophies,� said Donald, who won two PGA Tour events in 2011 and won the money title on the PGA and European Tours. “To be mentioned among

the names of the great champions that have won before, it inspires me to keep working hard and to hear those great champions, it is truly an honor.�

Donald splits his year by living in Evanston, Ill., where he graduated in 2001 from Northwestern University. His alma mater is not far from Medinah (Ill.) Country Club, the site of the 39th Ryder Cup, Sept. 28-30. “Medinah is about 30 minutes from my home, and I have played it (No. 3 Course) a few times, but not for about a year and half,� said Donald. “They have made a few changes recently. It will be a great event at Medinah. The Ryder Cup is the most special event I have ever played.�

Though he holds the top world ranking, Donald is asked what has kept him from achieving a professional’s ultimate career goal - winning a major championship. “It’s hard to answer, my game is good enough to win a major,� said Donald. “My driving has held me back and you have to be driving it well during a major championship. Williams keeps rolling Boca Raton’s Dana Williams recently added another championship to her collection after she captured the Girls 11 Division of the U.S. Kids Golf Copperhead Classic on Jan. 14-15 at the Innisbrook Golf Resort north of Tampa.

Williams, 11 and a fifth-grader at Sandpiper Shores Elementary School, finished 9-over for the event to beat Mallory Lovell by three strokes.

Williams also has also earned Player of Year honors several times. “I love the game of golf,� said Williams, whose father and caddie, John Williams, has enlisted the help of Hall of Famer Bob Toski to work with his daughter. “It’s fun and interesting. I’m excited because it’s new stuff to learn. I want to make the LPGA Tour, and be like Bob Toski.�

Williams called the Copperhead Classic championship, her “favorite� win to date. “It was fun because my friends were there,� Williams said. “They wanted me to win. People were saying, ‘We believe in you,’ and then ‘Congratulations.’�

Toski a featured speaker Toski was on hand to speak at the Annual Centurion Cocktail Reception held at Atlantis GC in late January.

I spent close to two hours with Conragan, and he made a difference to a guy who has thought that he might as well place an anvil at the end of a rope and swing that on the course instead of a fancy club.

Conragan, who played collegiate golf at Florida State with Jeff Sluman and Kenny Knox – winners on the PGA Tour – knows a bit about the swing and owns one of only two FlightScope devices in South Florida.

This is the coolest technology, hands down.

FlightScope uses 3D Doppler tracking radar to provide the golfer enough information about his swing and ball flight to overload a couple of neurons. The machine also is capable of showing you in full color the position of the cold front moving down the state. This is the same technology the television networks use to show the flight of a golf professional’s tee shot during the weekly PGA broadcast.

FlightScope – with someone like Conragan taking you through a session – will help to determine if you need new clubs or just adjustments on your old set. Of course, if you own a $2 swing, professional lessons might be in order if your goal is to break 100 and make golf enjoyable.

ragan can help average golfers get the most out of the clubs they are using because the technology also will show where the club face is on impact along with the angle of the shaft at impact.

Just as impressive is the technology Conragan uses to help on the greens – a program from Science & Motion Sports. The SAM PuttLab is so exact it will track the position of your hands from start to finish on putts.

Golfers who believe they take their putter straight back and straight through will learn quickly that their putting stroke is very similar to their full swing – inside out.

At impact, the putting analysis showed my putter open less than a degree, but that was enough on a straight putt to force the ball right of the cup.

The image captured on the computer showed my hands went back on a straight

line, but then rose up slightly, looped around and then came back on a different path. This caused the blade to stay open slightly, but more importantly had me hitting down on the ball, driving it into the ground instead of rolling it across the green.

For years, I thought I needed my eyes checked because my putts were always right of the cup. In fact, when I changed to an open stance, my direction changed and I started making more of the short ones.

Conragan’s computers showed me why, and it wasn’t because of the bifocals I wear.

PuttLab is available for rental, and it is neat to see your shots in 3-D. But without a knowledgeable person to explain what all of the numbers on the screen mean, you might be wasting your money on the rental.

Now, like The Monkees said, I’m a Believer. Technology will help me get back under 100 if I follow through and get my clubs adjusted to my swing. Probably going to need to change driver loft, get a different shaft – spend less than a new set would cost.

So if you are in the same rut I’ve been in the past couple of years, instead of blaming your scores on poor equipment, consider a fitting, especially with FlightScope. In just a couple of hours, Conragan started me back in the direction of making golf fun again.
