What to Consider When Choosing a Performing & Visual Arts School by Jennifer Gross tudents who wish to study visual or performing arts face some unique challenges during their college search. The type of college, application process, and school philosophy are just a few of the important things to consider. A Difference of Degree Prospective arts majors have two degree options: the first, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree with a major in the arts; the second, a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) for artists/performers or Bachelor of Music (BM) for musicians. The BA degree is the typical liberal arts degree, with a survey of courses in different areas and a specialty chosen in one area; students who major in English, history, and other humanities majors also earn BA degrees. The BFA or BM degree is more intensely focused in the arts. There is a world of difference between a BA in Music and a BM in Music. A BA in Music consists of a lot of courses outside of the music major and approximately 12 or so courses within it. It may not be enough for the student who wants a passionate musical experience. A BM in Music, however, is essentially a professional degree with rigorous study through coursework in music history and theory. Which degree you choose depends on your college and career goals. If you have a high degree of commitment to your art and desire an arts-focused college experience, a BFA or BM might be right for you. If you would rather study a variety of subjects along with your arts major, a BA may be the way to go. Types of Colleges Visual and performing arts students have several types of colleges to consider. Conservatories and stand-

alone arts schools offer an immersion-type experience for students earning BM or BFA degrees. All students will be artists, and the atmosphere is often highly competitive. Some larger universities offer BFA/BM degrees as well as BA degrees in the arts. You may find somewhat selfcontained music or arts schools within the larger university. In this atmosphere, students can pursue the more specialized degree while keeping the door open to taking a few liberal arts courses (which may be unavailable at specialized music or arts schools). In addition, a university-based arts program might give you the option of pursuing a double degree, such as a BM in Music and a BA in History. The Application Process In addition to completing a typical college application, students in the visual or performing arts will need to prepare a portfolio or audition. Each school will have different requirements, listed in their collateral and on their website. Keep in mind that although a portfolio or audition is an important part of the application, arts programs do consider academic records and test scores. Most colleges balance students’ creative talent with their academic achievements. Assessing Your Abilities If you're interested in pursuing an arts major and career, now is the time to seek objective opinions of your abilities in the field. In addition to asking for honest advice from high school and private teachers, students can also get outside assessment from professionals at a local symphony, dance troupe, or theater company. Visual arts students can receive portfolio evaluations from college representatives at one of the many National Portfolio Days. See www.portfolioday.net/ for details.

What to Consider When Choosing a Performing & Visual Arts School

Other Considerations

Facilities

All students benefit from visiting the colleges that interest them and asking questions about academics, student life, and other facets of the college experience. As an arts student, you have additional questions to consider.

In addition to checking out dorm rooms, classrooms, and athletic facilities, art students should look at a college's studio space or practice rooms, performance or exhibit venues on campus, computer resources, and any other resources specific to your field of study. And ask questions about how accessible these resources are to students: attractive studios are of no help if there aren't enough to go around.

The opportunity to perform, exhibit, and have active internships is vital to a young artist's education.

A Good Fit

Location The location of your chosen college may be more important to you than to students with other majors. For example, arts students attending school in urban areas will have access to professional venues such as museums, galleries, theaters, and concerts. Additionally, the opportunity to perform, exhibit, and have active internships is vital to a young artist's education.

Finally, as for every student, visual and performing arts students need to find a college that fits their personality, interests, and goals. It's easy to be dazzled by the prestige of a top professional school or arts department and overlook the question of whether the program is right for you. No matter how talented the student and how wonderful the school, fit is always crucial.

ARTIST profile

In His Own Words

Why did you decide to attend a performing and visual arts school? I went to a high-pressured math and science magnet school, so I always figured I'd go into something like engineering or computer science. But after I took my first art class as a junior, they quickly filled up all of my elective slots. By my senior year I was involved in every artistic outlet I could find. I designed school murals, was in the filmmakers club, and created t-shirts for various groups. It became clear to me that art was my passion, and I should pursue it. What arts major did you specifically study? Whenever I told someone that I liked math and art, they’d tell me to major in architecture. But after I read an issue of Time magazine that focused on Industrial Design (which encompasses everything from product design, to user interface design, to humanitarian design), I realized it was a major that combined a lot of my interests and I never looked back.

My best advice for students is to take a summer program at their local university. It not only helped me flesh out my portfolio, but it gave me an understanding of what art school was all about.

How did you personally research and then select a performing and visual arts school? My mom bought dozens of books and we made a list of the schools with the strongest Industrial Design programs in the country. We visited four schools, where I sat in on classes and met students. I ended up picking the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) because it had such a good reputation and I really liked the energy. Everyone seemed so optimistic and excited about what they were doing, and that made me want to be part of their community. How has your “arts” college experience shaped what you are doing now? RISD taught me entirely new ways to think. I was given the chance to explore many different types of art and aspects of Industrial Design. I worked on user interfaces with LG, built a functioning moon buggy for a NASA competition, and designed everything from kid's toys, to furniture, to spaceship interiors. All this making and doing helped me really understand who I am as an artist and a designer. I personally realized that I like variety, so I'm now a freelance designer in San Francisco. I work for different clients and also have time to work on personal projects, too. What advice do you have for students who want to attend a performing and visual arts school?

Cliff warren

BA in Industrial Design, 2011 Rhode Island School of Design

My best advice for students is to take a summer program at their local university. I did an art class the summer before my senior year. It not only helped me flesh out my portfolio, but it gave me an understanding of what art school was all about. Once you're sure art school is for you, follow your heart when selecting a school. It's really important to choose a school that has a unique vibe. It needs to be a place where you feel creative energy and believe your passion can grow.

Tips to Showcase Your Talent by Hilary Dobel pplying to a school for performing or visual arts (PVA) can be especially nerve-wracking because having someone judge your art – your talent – can be highly subjective. But you’ve already made the brave and difficult decision to pursue your artistic dream, so the best thing you can do is give yourself every possible advantage when applying to schools. The centerpiece of your application is where you showcase your talent: your portfolio or your audition. To make the best impression, read the guidelines for each school carefully. For example, some schools might prefer digital .jpeg files while others might ask for 35 mm slide transparencies. Double check, then check again!

Dance For in-person auditions, you’ll need to provide a CD or sheet music for accompaniment to your solo dance. Make sure to bring the CD in a labeled jewel case so it doesn’t get lost or scratched! If you’re submitting an audition DVD, many schools want shots of you from the side (especially for barre exercises) as well as from the front. Depending on how different the requirements of each school are, you might find it easier to film a series of short sections separately, then edit them together to tailor your audition video to each school. Many schools also ask that you wear a particular dance outfit, so make sure you’re dressed for success. Theater and Voice

Here are some of TeenLife’s tips for young artists as you’re preparing to take the next step in your creative career: Visual Arts and Graphic Design If you’re photographing your work, check out Bowdoin’s online guide to using natural and artificial light (http://www.bowdoin.edu/visual-arts/portfolio/ photographing-art.shtml). For digital files, 72 dpi and a max height of 1000 pixels are standard specifications, but make sure that’s what your schools want, too. You can submit your files by mail on a USB flash drive or CD, but some schools also let you post them to online services like highschoolportfolios.com, deviantart.com, or carbonmade.com. If you’re submitting slides, you can find Kodachrome and Ektachrome film in art stores or online. Consider a mail-order slide processing service like Coopers Imaging if you can’t find a developer locally.

Your appearance here is important. Choose clothing that’s flattering and neat, and keep any makeup simple. Headshots and a resume are universally required, so have a small stockpile printed–and you don’t have to spend a ton of money

on headshots to have a great photo. If you’re auditioning in person, don’t get upset or flustered if the panel wants you to make an adjustment to a monologue or song. It can actually mean that they’re impressed with you and want to see how you take direction! You may also be asked to improvise–to cold-read a scene for acting or to sight-read if you’re singing. Music Musicians auditioning long-distance may need to submit more than just a CD of their music. Increasingly, schools want DVD auditions, including close-ups of embouchure or fingering. In person, remember that you have a limited amount of time–don’t be alarmed if the panel cuts you off before a song is finished and asks to hear another one. They just want to see as much from you as they can. Remember to bring multiple copies of your sheet music, since the panel will want to be able to see what you’re playing to help them evaluate your performance. And, like singers, come ready to sight-read.

Film Stick to the running time given in the school’s guidelines! If you have a script or storyboard, the admissions committee may be interested in seeing those, too, so check the website for details. It’s difficult for high school students to make even a movie with limited resources, and film schools know that. Because of this, many of them accept work from other genres. If you have a short story you’re proud of or an essay that rocks, use that to give yourself an edge. Film schools want to know that you can tell a story, and you can show them your capabilities even if you don’t have a prizewinning short. No matter your genre, your audition or portfolio is about breadth as well as depth. You’ll need to demonstrate proficiency with a range of styles or expressive modes, such as a classical aria and a jazz standard, or ballet and modern dance. Choose pieces you love, no matter what, and your passion and talent will come through–and that’s sure to catch the eye of the selection committee.

artist profile

In Her Own Words Michele Lauriat

MFA in Studio Arts, University of Massachusetts BFA, School of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

What's the best way you researched a performing and visual arts school? By emailing their current students! I sent emails to the department secretaries at eight different schools with specific questions and asked if they could forward them on to current students. I was surprised at the feedback. I also went on each school’s site and looked at the faculty galleries to see what I liked. Each school showcases their professors’ works online. Of course, then you have to visit your top schools and apply. What did you have to do to apply to SMFA? And then to U Mass?

What type of student should consider a performing and visual arts school/major? Students who cannot help but obsess over theater or drawing or music should pursue degrees in those subjects. Nobody makes it in those fields without being talented, obsessed, and a workaholic. What advice can you offer students who are researching performing and visual arts schools? One of the first things to consider is whether you would like to attend an art college, or a university that offers art degrees. At art schools you are surrounded by artists no matter what class you are in. I tried both. I liked the diversity of the student population at the university (MFA at University of MA) more than I liked being surrounded by art students, but I found art schools to have better facilities and faculty. Schools like the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (SMFA) and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) offer the best of both worlds by teaming up with a University. SMFA students do all of their academics at Tufts University, RISD students at Brown—which worked perfectly for me.

One of the first things to consider is whether you would like to attend an art college, or a university that offers art degrees.

I had to submit typical college applications along with a portfolio to each school I was applying to as an undergrad. Most schools require no more than 20 original pieces of artwork be uploaded to their site for consideration. Some schools still may require that you mail in a disc with your application. Getting into grad school was much more competitive. I had to apply seven times before I was accepted. I even invited one of the professors to my studio to help me select works to submit. Plus, you go through a rigorous interview process since most only take 12-15 students. How has your schooling in the arts shaped what you want to do for a career? I definitely want to teach fine art, drawing and painting at the college level. These jobs are few and far between right now. I recognize that I have to explore every avenue to keep growing as an artist and working towards my career goals. For example, I am doing a one-day-a-week internship working in a gallery in Boston, continue to paint in my studio daily, and have just booked a solo gallery show in Chicago. I will also be the Artist in Residence at the Grand Canyon in January 2012. In exchange for a one-month stay in an apartment on the edge of the canyon, which includes a studio, I will do one presentation of my work and one art lesson with park visitors. READY

to conduct change
