ou may have forgotten there was ever a time when you weren’t connecting with friends, family and total strangers on Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Google+, Tumblr, YouTube, Vine or Twitter; through online pinboards like Pinterest; and on texting and messaging apps like Kik or WhatsApp. As you grow your art form, you’ll probably join other artists in using social media to announce upcoming performances and shows, connect with fans, share music or videos, raise money for your projects and even impress performing and visual arts programs. Perhaps you’re already doing this. By taking the following ideas to heart, you’ll use social media effectively and without regret.

1. SOCIAL MEDIA IS ONLY ONE OF MANY WAYS TO CONNECT. It’s easy to fall for the illusion that if you post every day or even several times a day on Facebook or Instagram or on any other social media platform, people will flock to your performance. Limiting yourself to social media to fill the seats at your concert or event will likely lead to disappointment. Social media alone is not likely to make you a star.

2. YOUR PROFICIENCY LEVEL IS MOST IMPORTANT. As a performing or visual artist, the quality of your work needs to be high enough to draw and sustain interest. Social media is a way to communicate, not a substitute for proficiency.

3. TO BE EFFECTIVE, CONSISTENCY IS ESSENTIAL. Creating a following through social media requires consistency and frequency. Your followers will expect a certain kind of presence from you, and if you let them down, they’ll go away. This requires a daily investment of time in order to consider what and when to post, and then to actually post it. Don’t bore your followers by repeating the same thing over and over again or by posting irrelevant status updates. Figuring out what to post and how often is not easy. You can spend big bucks to hire a social media guru to guide you, but more than likely, you’re going to have to learn what works through trial and error. >>

4. ONLY POST WHAT YOU WANT ANYONE – AND EVERYONE – TO SEE. Regardless of how many people do it, posting kneejerk reactions about how you feel in the moment could very well come back to bite you in the future. A rule of thumb, before posting, ask yourself whether you’d want your parents, grandparents, younger sister or college decision-makers and current/future employers to see it.

5. ASSUME THAT ANYTHING YOU POST WILL NOT GO AWAY. Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and all the others are moneymaking ventures for their billionaire founders who are constantly looking for new ways to grow their businesses. Remember that privacy issues are common. When you use social media,

your information may be viewed by people you would never have imagined. It may also be stored and shared to grow the business model.

6. REMEMBER THAT SOCIAL MEDIA IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING. Just when you get comfortable with your favorite social media platform, you’ll find that it has changed. So you’ve got to find a way to keep up with what really works for you. It’s not as much of a problem if you’re using social media to connect with friends and family. But if you’re using it to drum up interest in your band or to drive visitors to your dance performance, you could be in for a rude awakening. Facebook, for instance, frequently adjusts its algorithms, which may result in fewer people seeing what you want them to know about your work.

ARTS WITH A DOSE OF REALISM BY BILL O’NEILL

he circus employs lion tamers and trapeze artists – and the people who walk behind the elephants with a broom and a big dustpan. Put another way, show biz isn’t all about glamour. The hard reality is that only a few people have the skill and luck to make a good living as a musician, actor or dancer. The good news is that there are plenty of interesting jobs in show biz that don’t include cleaning up after elephants. A recent look at Playbill.com showed a range of nonperforming job openings in theater: a stage supervisor in Florida, a theater manager in Nebraska, a lighting designer in Colorado and lots of opportunities in New York, from voice teacher, dance instructor, lighting designer and costume designer to publications associate, scheduling coordinator, marketing director and many more.

Some people work in management (business manager, entertainment attorney, booking agent). Some help performers look and sound their best (lighting designer, sound mixer, choreographer, vocal coach, stylist, wardrobe supervisor). Some help build a performer’s audience (music video director, public relations consultant, radio promoter, concert promoter, website developer). Some teach or use the arts as therapy in

working with underserved populations. And the list goes on. “I would never discourage a student from studying music, but they need to come into it with a realistic view of the fact that this degree will not hand them a job,” says Kym Scott, assistant professor and director of choral activities at West Virginia University. “The degree is there to help them gain the skills that will help them in their career, but it’s not like an engineering degree where at the end there will be a bunch of jobs advertised that they can apply for. In reality, there’s only a tiny percentage who will end up making their career in music, particularly in singing.”

THREE QUESTIONS TO ASK Scott says aspiring entertainers should ask themselves some important questions: What other skills do I have? What skills can I use? What other areas to possibly work in would interest me? “They need to learn how to be versatile and explore what else they have an interest in and the ability to do – not necessarily outside of entertainment but >>

outside of performing,” she says. As she points out, most schools that train people in the performing arts also have courses in supporting fields.

that there are as many opportunities as there are people to create paths.”

“It’s important for young people to pursue what they love, first and foremost,” says Daniel Gary Busby, an associate professor at the University of California, Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts. “But I also think that if you have a love for performing, whether it’s singing, acting or dancing, the training that you get teaches you the skill of self-reflection," he says. "That skill is fantastic for all people to figure out how to navigate through their life.”

IT’S WHO YOU KNOW

Brooklyn-based music producer and engineer Joel Hamilton has earned four Grammy nominations. He says it’s important to find your own path. “The thing I tell interns every time they come to my studio, as far as finding a role in the music world, is there are no job openings,” he says. “You have to create your own jobs. The optimistic side of it is

You are going to need help to suceed; that means finding mentors. The best way to find mentors, he says, is to look at the records that you love and see who recorded them. “Try to figure out how to get in touch with those people. Be resourceful with emails and building relationships. ... It’s the old concept of who you know. If you surround yourself with people who are doing great things, amazingly you find yourself in the midst of some cool projects.” Life in the entertainment business means you must be willing to live with a great deal of the unknown, says Busby. “You have to make peace with the fact that it’s not all laid out for you in a simple formula,” he says.

Why did you pick Lawrence University? I was initially attracted by the ability to study both jazz and classical music (only a fraction of the kinds of music I would end up studying!) and the ability to take classes within the college (specifically, history and literature). However, when it really came down to it, I think I made my final decision to enroll after receiving a two sentence email from Lawrence’s classical guitar professor after being accepted which, in contrast to the several stock emails I had received from faculty at other schools in response to similar questions, had clearly only been written to me. My encounters with my teachers and peers at Lawrence (both before coming and as a student) have been nothing if not sincere.

What has been your favorite part of the music program at Lawrence? The faculty, without a doubt. I will forever be grateful to my teachers who, whether in written feedback on an assignment or over coffee on the weekends, have showed me who they are as people and as musicians and encouraged me to explore and develop who I might be.

How did you discover your passion for guitar? For me, playing guitar (and music) has always been about people. I discovered my passion for guitar thanks to some wonderful role models I had early in my life – my dad, elementary music school teachers, my rabbi, who happened to play guitar. I wanted to be like them in any and every way I could! After finding a group of friends in high school with whom an afternoon spent hanging out meant an afternoon spent making music, I dove into my high school’s music program, playing guitar and percussion for any group that needed either. When I decided to go to study music in college (and realized that marimba was not the instrument for me), I decided to take what had been my favorite activity (playing guitar) and make it the main focus of my days!

How do you think this program will help in what you want to do next? From wonderful teachers, curious and dazzlingly inspiring classmates, to rehearsal space and recording studios, the music program (and university in general) at Lawrence has given me everything I could ever have imagined as part of my college education. Most concretely, the program has given me the friends and colleagues with whom I’ll be starting the musical projects that will eventually make up my career and the teachers whose advice will help get those projects off the ground. Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years? Though I can’t even write where I’ll be in one year with much certainty, I’ll paint a wishful picture of where I’ll be in 10: I hope to be writing, recording and touring with different musical projects for part of the year and teaching at Lawrence for the rest of it.

medium, because it is completely collaborative; it is not something you can do alone, and when the right people get together, there is the potential to create something more beautiful than anyone could ever do alone. What’s the hardest part for you about creating? The hardest part is, ironically, one of the reasons I love it. As an artist, you are putting your creative ideas out there for your peers to not only observe, but to pick apart for the sake of improvement. It can feel like laying one’s heart out on the table to be dissected. Vulnerability is uncomfortable but wholly necessary in the creative process.

In Her Own Words Sarah Eberwein Regent University How did you discover your passion for film? Discovering my passion for film can be explained as the pieces of an elaborate puzzle of childhood interests fitting together into a vocation. From a very young age, I was fascinated with and dabbled in practically every form of visual arts. I initially chose Regent University, though, for my interest in journalism and their excellent Strategic Communication program. During my freshman year, I found myself helping on film sets for the fun of it. It happened that all the interests I had as a child had prepared me for the skills I needed on set. What started as a hobby quickly grew into an aspiration, and eventually, my calling. It has been at Regent that I have found a home for all my passions and skills by double majoring in communication and cinema-television. What’s your favorite part about creating? It is hard to say that just one element of creating a film is my favorite. And as much as I love the artistic and creative process, it really boils down to the people. I am the epitome of a people person and those I have met on set and the experiences I’ve shared with them are absolutely priceless. I have found film to be such a unique artistic

What has been your favorite part of this program/college? One of my favorite parts of the program has been seeing different students’ interpretations of the same assignments. Observing their own creative expression has helped me as an artist to push boundaries and think outside of my narrow experience in order to have a more meaningful and broader impact. How do you think this program will help in what you want to do next? One of my professors often remarks to the class, “If you don't want to make mistakes, be a brain surgeon.” I have found those words to have a profound impact on the way I appreciate film school. In a learning environment where new ideas and risks are encouraged, now is the time to make as many “mistakes” as possible. In fact, I have become very grateful for the mistakes I have the opportunity to learn from before professionally entering the industry. Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years? In 10 years I see myself walking up the stage to receive an Oscar as best production designer, with a passport full of stamps and enough memories for two lifetimes. Most importantly though, as long as I have helped create beautiful films that leave a meaningful impact on their audience and inspire change, I will have found success.

How to make a living

TELLING STORIES BY ADAM VILLONE mart phones and YouTube have opened the door for thousands of aspiring filmmakers to record their stories. And the idea that your video could go viral, rack up lots of “likes,” and lead to you being discovered is certainly tantalizing. But, if you expect your short film to make it to the finals of a major film festival, land you a production deal and launch your career … well, that’s another story. I’m not trying to squash your dreams. I just want to alert you that those stars in your eyes can be blinding. By almost any measure, Nathan Silver is a very successful independent filmmaker. A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of Arts, Silver has written and directed five short films and seven feature films. His films have played at festivals and venues around the world including New York Film Festival, Locarno, Tribeca, Rotterdam, Mar Del Plata, Viennale, and MoMA. But Silver will be the first to tell you that if you’re looking for a steady income, independent filmmaking may not be for you. “If movies are your life, you build your life around them, but movies don't pay the bills,” he says. “You might have to work less-than-desirable jobs, live in a

shoebox, and not be able to enjoy a day off. I’ve learned to try and find paying jobs that I’m not precious about and let those jobs cover the bills. If you're crazy enough to want to make movies, the fact that you're making them will make it all feel like it's worth it...” So far, his success and commitment to his craft have led him to pursue a career path that moves from project to project. He offers this advice for starting out: “Make your first movies for as little money as possible with family and friends. You'll have plenty of time to work with strangers and (perhaps) with larger budgets down the line. It's important to see what you can do with as little as possible, to see how you fail and let your failures shape your future attempts.” Like a many young filmmakers, Silver turned to crowdfunding to help finance his earlier projects. However, the competition is fierce and the success rate is declining. KickStarter, one of the most popular sites, has helped launch close to 48,000 film and video projects since 2009 with an average success rate of 43 percent. But that rate is dropping, according to Stephen Follows, a film producer, writer and consultant. >>

And, there is a huge difference between raising money for an independent film and being able to support oneself in the production industry.

Here are three more tips that will serve you well.

1. COMMUNICATION

If you’re serious about a career in production, you may have to lower your sights a bit. No one starts at the top. There are many avenues other than feature films, documentaries, television and the arts. Just think about all the film and video you are exposed to on a daily basis. Most important is to understand the scope of the production business. The key word in that last sentence is business. Film and video production is a business or often a function of a larger business. Virtually every industry uses video (and sometimes film) in some way to communicate whether to inform, educate, instruct, research, market, advertise, promote or entertain. Many companies have their own production teams on staff, others go outside for production sources. Content, audience and budgets may vary, but the production skills needed to develop and complete a project from beginning to end are basically the same. Larger productions often require more specialized skills, but the experience you acquire working on a project of any size is generally transferable or can be built upon. No doubt, you’ve heard this before, but although talent is important, it will only get you so far. Hard work, perseverance, timing, networking, observation, learning, improving skills, and yes, even luck, all come into play. As in any business, what you do when given an opportunity, what you learn on the job, and how you continue to invest in yourself will help propel your career.

Work on improving your communication skills, specifically your writing skills. Learn how to write clear, cohesive, direct sentences. Nothing ends up on a screen that doesn’t start with the written word – a letter of introduction, a resume, a proposal, a business plan, a treatment, a script concept, a screenplay – someone will have to read and understand what you are trying to communicate before you move to the next stage of any project.

2. NETWORK

Yes, you hear this all the time, but I can’t emphasize enough how important it is. You’d be surprised at how many people do not take advantage of opportunities to meet, mingle, and observe industry members. Any opportunity to learn a new skill or meet people from the industry should be a priority. Volunteer, ask questions, find a sympathetic ear, be an extra in someone’s production. Listen and learn.

3. EXPERIMENT

Try something new. Learn a craft or skill beyond your primary interest. Production is a collaboration. Understanding and valuing how everyone contributes will help you do your job better and build lasting relationships.

Film and video have been an integral part of every new media form in the last 100 years. Our world is shaped by powerful visual images and the stories they tell. It doesn’t look like that is going to change. You can build a successful career helping to create those images and maybe, eventually, get to tell your own stories. Good luck.

for Getting Into

here is plenty to the arts that is imaginative, but there’s also a side that, while creative, is more nuts and bolts. Somebody has to see that the light bill gets paid. That’s where the arts administrator or manager comes in. Arts administrators “work behind the scenes to make sure artists keep creating and the public keeps appreciating art of every kind,” says the College Board website. With a degree in arts administration, you could help manage a museum, theater, ballet company, art gallery or other profit-making or nonprofit organization. You could handle hiring, accounting, technology, raising money, recruiting volunteers – or managing all the people who do those jobs. Potential median salary for an arts administrator was $80,267 as of June 2016, according to salary.com. Juliana Driever, program manager for the masters in art administration program at Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City, started as an artist. She took as many advanced art studio courses as her high school offered, as well as some local college courses. “At that time, I knew that I loved making art and being around other creative people, but I wasn’t sure of the career path I would take,” she says. In her position at Teachers College, she is responsible for academic operations, events and budgets of the arts administration program. She also has a background in curating, researching art and developing collections.

Christopher Fuller, business office specialist at the Yale School of Drama/Yale Repertory Theater, took a different route to arts administration. He studied history and theater, became an actor, then got his master’s in business administration. “I think the theater is great,” says Fuller. “It is an exciting career for young people, but then at a certain point, you look around and ask what am I doing here?” He finds working within an organization rewarding and stable. “It’s an opportunity to build relationships with people who can see the quality of your work and respect it," he says. In his position at Yale, he helps with the theater management students in the master’s program and at the Yale Repertory Theater. The students are essentially responsible for running the theater under a professional managing director and an assisstant director who is a student. Fuller also has responsibilities for the five annual theater shows, including payroll and arranging accommodations for the professional actors, directors and designers. If you’re interested in arts administration, Fuller says there are four skills you can work on even while still in high school: 1. Communication: You need to really focus on how to communicate with others. You can practice through conversation with friends, on stage in a theater, in front of a classroom, in the team locker room or as a member of the debate team – whatever works.

2. Teamwork: Learning to work together is important, whether it's on a sports team, on stage, or as part of a commuinty service project. 3. Math: Take algebra, statistics and calculus. Many people in arts management excel in communication, but far fewer can really master the numbers. 4. Technology skills: Learn a management program like Microsoft Excel and how to use numbers and metrics to quantify decisions. And once you are ready to apply for college, Fuller and Driever have four more tips: 1. Pick your spot carefully. “I would encourage students not to stress too much about their major,” says Fuller. More importantly, go to a school where you can succeed with the course work.

2. Location, location, location. Think about attending college in an area where you might want to ultimately live or work. Networking and internships are essential in getting to know what you want to do and where in the performing arts or visual arts world you want to be. 3. Get out there. “Network, network, network,” says Driever. “The arts sector is a very social space, so try your best to meet new people. … Being an arts administrator requires a constant looking and seeing. Be curious about everything.” 4. Look for an internship. “My graduate degree is in art history, not arts administration, and was steeped in theory and research of artists and art movements,” Driever says. “I found I had to create my own opportunities to learn the management skills I needed to navigate professional settings in the art world. So I took on internships, and in doing so, I found a mentor who gave me guidance, introduced me to new contacts and opened many doors.”

There were many factors that went into choosing the School of Dramatic Arts at the University of Southern California, but I will narrow it down to my top three: • I was yearning for teachers who were not going to coddle me or give me a gold star for simply completing an assignment but instead would call me out if I was not doing the work and offer me constructive criticism on how I can improve my acting. I can confidently say that I have indeed found that at USC, a school in which the faculty are the heartbeat.

In His Own Words Kyle Matthew Weinreb University of Southern California School of Dramatic Arts My passion for acting, for storytelling, for affecting someone, has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I did not fully embrace this “itch” until I was 14, when I won best actor on Shakespeare Day at my school, and I officially put my dreams of playing basketball in the NBA on the back burner to pursue acting. As I got older, I began to recognize the commitment and the countless hours it would take to become the "best" actor I could be. This belief was cemented when I picked up Malcolm Gladwell’s book, "Outliers," in which he stated that “researchers have settled on what they believe is the magic number for true expertise: 10,000 hours.” As a college applicant, this number was daunting to say the least, but I knew the next step to reach my 10,000 hours of acting was to study acting in college.

• I liked the diversity of the students and the variety of majors that USC not only offers, but excels in. Every time I step onto campus, there is a sense of intellectual and creative stimulation that is unique to USC. • Last, but not least, coming from out of state – Texas – I wanted a place that felt like a home away from home. I know it is a little cliché, but I truly feel that USC has served as such for me.

As a rising senior, my academic journey at USC, specifically the School of Dramatic Arts, is technically coming to a close. That being said, the opportunities, the memories, the profound wisdom I have acquired during my time here will be with me forever.

How Theater Training

HELPS ON STAGE - AND OFF! BY KAY KEOUGH aving a theatrical background himself, Rob Seitelman might be a little biased, but he believes students involved in theater take valuable skills to college.

2. SELF-AWARENESS, CONFIDENCE AND RISK-TAKING

“I approach more people, either to make friends or for networking/employment,” Sabrina Marshall, who studies English literature and theater at Whittier College in Whittier, Calif., wrote in an email about the benefits of studying theater. “By being somewhat forced to work with others, I became more confident in my voice and my opinion when solving a problem.”

Julia Acquistapace, a self-described introvert who studies theater at Columbia College Chicago, echoed Marshall. Theater skills have helped her connect with professors and internship supervisors. And she has learned things about herself through the characters she’s played, she says.

Theater builds confidence in other ways, as well. Its impermanence allows students to take risks and fail gracefully, Seitelman says.

“There’s nothing you can do in a theater space that is going to be permanent in any way, and that is sort of unique in the academic world,” he says. “You can look back and objectively discuss what was good and the positive things you can take (away) for next time.”

“We have to allow ourselves to explore and use everything we learn to potentially help us understand theater – and, by extension, help us understand life,” says Seitelman, the Princeton Review’s director of educational partnerships for the Southwest and Pacific Northwest.

We talked to Seitelman and other college experts and students about how theater training can give you a leg up over peers, both during the college application process and in the transition to college. Here are five areas where they say theater helps:

1. COMMUNICATION SKILLS

In theater, “you really have to be so present,” says Nina Schuessler, producing artistic director for Cape Cod Theatre Company, home of the Harwich Junior Theatre, in Harwich, Mass. “That takes having all your senses developed to the best they can be: seeing, hearing, evaluating, taking in another person.” Actors tend to be great communicators and excellent listeners, she said. That’s because a show only works if the actors take the time to truly understand what their scene partners are saying and doing. Exposure to a variety of people also is a benefit, Seitelman says. “(Theater’s) a melting pot or salad bowl of diverse interests.”

3. DISCIPLINE AND COMMITMENT TO HARD WORK

Mass. Rehearsals for community theater can go until 11 p.m. on top of a full day of school, she says. It requires the focus and discipline that fosters success on campus, she and others say. And, young actors and theater techs work alongside seasoned adults, which requires maturity and gives them an understanding of what it takes to succeed.

When you become involved in theater, “you check your ego at the door,” says Jill Abusch, co-founder and artistic director of The Play Group Theatre in White Plains, N.Y. “You’re part of something bigger than yourself, and have to look out for one another and tell the story.”

Abusch asks her students to throw their phones in a bucket at the start of class. In a device-centric age, she says, theater forces participants to make eye contact, to use their imaginations and to figure things out together – without the help of a search

“Kids can be in their own little protective world,” says Santos from Cotuit. “But going off to college, meeting new people … they have to go outside their comfort level.”

Theater prepares kids for this experience not only through camaraderie but also through the different characters and stories they explore. Acquistapace remembers a production of “The Laramie Project,” a play about LGBTQ intolerance that her private, Catholic, all-girl school produced.

Theater, she says, has "given me a strong voice to advocate for others to tell stories that aren't always first in society."

I ultimately chose PLU because it encompasses a conservatory type of instruction as well as the rigor of a liberal arts education. PLU is unique. Because it is all undergraduate students, nothing is off limits. I had the opportunity to learn a role with PLU opera my first semester of college while I was performing huge works of music with the Choir of the West. PLU sets you up with all of the tools you need to be successful. All of the professors and faculty are willing to help you with anything. PLU offers students a full opera production each academic year, as well as a huge program of scenes. During the summer, PLU offers another full production and scenes program through the Summer Opera Workshop. These programs offer anyone the chance to perform opera, even if you choose not to major in music!

Marissa Moultrie Pacific Lutheran University I started taking voice lessons my sophomore year of high school, but it wasn’t until the end of my junior year that I decided that I wanted to be a vocal performance major in college. I learned quite a bit about Pacific Lutheran University through my voice teacher in high school (now my voice teacher at PLU). At the end of my junior year of high school, I began looking at colleges, and after I participated in the PLU Summer Opera Workshop before my senior year, I knew that PLU was my top choice. PLU is also a great environment to be an artist, since the student population is so accepting of the arts and music.

I think that the liberal arts education that PLU provides serves us well in the real world. Taking general education classes really help to set a real world application to what I’ve been learning about singing and opera. Last semester I took an anthropology class and I was constantly thinking about music, human universals and how understanding human behavior can help me connect to my audience. I also took a ballroom dance class, which has proven itself to be incredibly useful in staging rehearsals. Whether it’s a social science class where you learn about how humans interact with each other, or a biology class where you learn human anatomy and can then relate that to singing, you are improving your musicianship and career preparedness in many ways. I know that what I’ve learned at PLU about vocation and leading a life of service will serve me well in the future, both for graduate school and beyond. I know the connections I’ve made at PLU will continue to support me through the world of classical music for a lifetime.

Portfolio preparation is an art form in itself. But you can learn to refine it at one of more than three dozen National Portfolio Day events, held annually in 31 states and two Canadian provinces.

"quality over quantity” – 12 great examples rather than 20 that are only OK, he says. And don’t be dazzled by the prestigious schools.

These college fair-style events, held in conjunction with the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (www.portfolioday.net), bring together many college representatives in one venue to provide one-on-one critiques before art students actually apply to colleges.

"The mistake that a lot of students make is standing in line for three hours to speak to someone from RISD for 10 minutes. … There are many other top art schools that will have shorter lines and will provide excellent feedback," says Carl Lopes, a Cape Cod studio artist who, for 20 years, was visual arts director for the Art and Applied Technology Department at Barnstable High School in Hyannis, Mass.

The best time to attend a portfolio day is during junior year, before you begin the college application process, says Barry Beach, an arts-school admissions adviser based in San Rafael, Calif.

Up to 60 schools can be represented at a portfolio day, so students need a strategy, he says. He advises arriving early and knowing exactly what schools you want to target.

“These professionals want to see who (the students) are, what their future college plans are, and what their fears and concerns are,” he says. “They also want to review a student's work and show them how they can make it better.”

He also advises students that college representatives want to gain a sense of who the student is as a person.

That’s the point of attending junior year: having time to incorporate feedback into your artwork or to develop a missing skill before your portfolio is submitted with a college application. Beach, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R.I., says that portfolios should include the best of your most recent work, but not too much. It is better to go with

Anna Pating, 19, a student at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., was nervous when she showed her portfolio to college admissions representatives, but they provided her with a solid outline of what they wanted to see during the application process. >>

"Each school wanted to see a variety of raw artwork, but they were really different when it came to things like creative work,” she says. “Some schools, like RISD, wanted to see things set up very traditionally, and they had little interest in creative pieces, while Pratt representatives were happy to see a variety of creative pieces.” Pating, from San Francisco, was the first in her family to attend art school and worked with Beach during her senior year. Having an expert to guide her through the art-school application process was important, she says, since her family was unfamiliar with the process. "It can be really overwhelming when you are applying to a bunch of schools that all want different things, and it can be really stressful," Pating says.

PORTFOLIO DAY TIPS 1. Include 12 to 15 quality pieces of work. 2. Be open to a variety of colleges. 3. Get feedback from different kinds of programs, such as fine arts and animation. 4. Take notes. 5. Attend in your junior year. 6. Talk to representatives from digital programs. 7. Save all your artwork from freshman through junior year. 8. Include pieces based on your own initiative. 9. Include pieces stemming from visual discoveries – a drawing, for example, of that old sneaker in a corner of your messy room. 10. Get feedback from teachers before portfolio day. 11. Be open to criticism.

Courses here have taught me everything I need to know in order to hone my craft as a jazz trombonist. Playing in Big Band and our Jazz Performance Workshops twice a week each gives me plenty of time to play with other musicians my age, under the direction of full-time faculty who have already had and still do have professional experience to share. The rigorous music theory and aural skills program here teaches the inner-workings of Western music which we contextualize historically through the three-semester music history course. Weekly lessons with my studio professor, Mark Kellogg, teach me all of the technical aspects of the trombone, but also so much more. Becoming close with Mark during my time here has taught me so much about musicality, professionalism, Rochester, and life, all which have been very applicable to my career so far.

On top of all of that, being surrounded by more than 900 other focused, intelligent classical and jazz musicians my age is inspiring and an extremely important part of the music education process. I learn so much every time I speak with my peers about jazz records they are listening to, concerts they have seen, and what they are practicing.

In His Own Words Abe Nouri Eastman School of Music I love the conversational aspect of jazz music. Studying this art form feels like studying a language! In order to communicate and share musical stories with other musicians, one needs to first master the vocabulary and natural contour of the language of jazz. The Eastman School of Music is one of the best places for developing these skills and studying music!

Eastman offers more than enough of the tools needed to learn how to communicate through music. The rest is up to me! Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the fun part. When Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not in classes, rehearsals, or at gigs, I spend my time transcribing great jazz solos. This helps me learn common musical words and phrases that other jazz musicians understand. When I improvise, I use those conventions to say something in my own way while respecting the tradition of the music. My fellow musicians respond, and the conversation begins!

Mary Washington. The musical that fall was "Spring Awakening" (one of my favorites) and while I auditioned and got called back (woo!), I was ultimately not cast. I, of course, was bummed but determined to be a part of the production in any way possible, I found myself on the show’s stage management team. I had no idea what I was doing; I was just happy to be in the room! But pretty soon, I discovered I loved being behind the table far more than performing in front of it.

I honestly believe that if I had gone to any other school, I wouldn’t have found stage management. So many performing arts programs love to categorize you from day one, but that is what I love about UMW Theatre. I wasn’t put into a box; I was encouraged to step outside of my comfort zone and try something new. And, because of that, I have chosen a career path that is far different from what I imagined as an incoming freshman. I still enjoy performing, but I have never felt more fulfilled or accomplished than when I am on a stage management team.

Taylor Kiechlin The University of Mary Washington Going into my freshman year I knew that I was going to be an actor. There was absolutely no doubt in my mind; I was going to be a performer and that was that. And here I am, a year away from graduation, pursuing what I love: stage management. Unexpected? I completely agree. My love for stage management took me utterly by surprise. I didn't even know what stage management was going into that first year at the University of

In UMW Theatre, I have found mentors and professors that are kind, intelligent, and generous enough to push me to be the best I can be. My stage management professor, whom I respect more than anything, has provided me with more guidance and opportunities than I ever could have dreamed of. Any success I find will be due to his incredible teaching and support and, in that, I can say for a fact that UMW Theatre has changed my life. And so here I am, a year away from graduation, pursuing what I love, and spending my summer working at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., on the Broadway-bound musical "Come From Away." Sometimes I feel as if I’m living in a fever dream, but every morning I find myself back in that rehearsal room. And I have UMW Theatre to thank for that.

comfort zone. I like being able to find different things about the world that I find really interesting and show them to an audience. There's so much in the world that you can learn about.

A Collection of Voices

What’s the hardest part for you about creating? Well, my bread and butter is documentary. But when it's a live event, especially with recent events [in the Twin Cities], I have come to realize that you can't be totally objective when you're covering something. I mean, you're a human being; you have your own opinions. But for the most part, when I go into these events I try to stay out of it to the point where I can get an image that doesn't seem like it's being manipulative, but at the same time shows a perspective that maybe people haven't really thought about before.

In His Own Words Armand Hayes Minneapolis College of Art and Design How did you discover your passion for photography? It really started when I was in high school. I was always the one taking pictures. Everyone knew me for having, well, it was a point-and-shoot-camera at the time, so it wasn't the best quality. But between then and Minneapolis College of Art and Design, I sort of just grew on my own, teaching myself how to do photography. And then when I got here, it just really took off to a whole new level. I’m now doing work that actually has meaning behind it and am really growing my craft.

What’s your favorite part about creating? What I love the most about photography is I like being able to go into a different environment and tell a story from it. It is a chance for me to push myself out into the world and find something new. Before photography I was kind of reserved. So photography, in a way, brings me out of my

What has been your favorite part of MCAD? I definitely appreciate the students that go here. I mean, we work so hard on our projects and it gets to be stressful at times, but at the end of the day it's very rewarding to walk around the school and see this great work that people put so much energy into and be able to critique it, take a look at it, and maybe get some inspiration. Also, I enjoy the food here, too. The fries are always off the chain. Everyone likes the fries. I mean even now I kind of try to hold off a bit because you can't have fries all the time. But I like to have that available. How do you think this program will help in what you want to do next? MCAD has helped me find my voice. Over time, I started to learn more and more that I'm into documentary, more of a photojournalistic kind of photography. Through that, I feel like I've really found my voice, going to different environments and telling stories from the experiences. And I definitely feel like my portfolio has grown since I've been here. The teachers have really pushed me to go beyond my boundaries and go into a different and better realm of photography.

A degree in the arts offers endless possibilities. It will take your skills to the next level, let you surround yourself with others who are passionate about the arts and teach you how to make a living doing what you love. Follow these four steps as you navigate the application process:

GET FEEDBACK Whether you’re a concert pianist or an aspiring filmmaker, your talents and accomplishments will help determine your admission chances. Figure out where you stand by seeking out an objective assessment of your abilities. Start by asking a trusted teacher or mentor to describe your strengths and weaknesses. You might also consider getting an outside opinion from professionals with a local symphony, dance troupe or theater company. Visual artists can receive portfolio evaluations from college representatives at one of the many National Portfolio Day events offered across the nation. Visit portfolioday.net for details.

SCOPE OUT YOUR OPTIONS Conservatories, stand-alone arts schools and traditional universities all offer programs for performing and visual arts students.

Take time to learn about each option as well the different degree pathways. Conservatories and art schools offer students the chance to immerse themselves in the arts. At these highly competitive institutions, degrees typically include a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) for artists/performers or a bachelor of music (BM) for musicians. Looking for a more traditional college experience? At many universities, students can major in disciplines such as dance, music or the theater arts to meet the requirements of a bachelor of arts degree. In addition to arts courses, students take liberal arts classes and have the opportunity to double-major or minor in another area of interest, such as history or Spanish.
