When I signed up for Andover’s eSummer program, I was looking for a flexible class to help me continue learning over the summer, work with problems that were personalized, and do this while being surrounded by a supportive and friendly virtual community. Now that I have attended the program, I think it is fair to say that Andover’s eSummer provides all of that and so much more.

Even before the program officially began, my teachers took the time to get to know me both as an individual and as a student. I spent a couple days doing pre-assessments, which ranged from taking standard math and English tests to sending a picture of my favorite place to work! Everything was done to find a class, teacher, and curriculum which would be an ideal fit for me.

At our synchronous sessions, I got to know my classmates who Zoomed in from all over the world! When meeting all at the same time was not possible because of time differences, my instructors hosted meetings at different times to be convenient for everyone. It was refreshing to switch between different activities, such as live instruction with my class, 1:1 meetings with teachers, and individual study throughout the day.

Possibly my favorite part of my summer with Andover was working with dedicated, flexible, and friendly teachers. My instructors created a plan with me for each week and made sure I stayed on the right track. ESummer has a range of different courses. Because I took the “High School Prep Institute” course, I had an instructor for English and for math. Both of my teachers were eager to modify and add new assignments to those available on the website

that worked better to my learning goals. The learning was boundless!

In the English section of my course, I wanted to practice applying different strategies I learned in my assigned worksheets into essays. Although my teacher did not originally plan this, he was enthusiastic and proposed writing a story. I then submitted this story to “The Exhibition of Learning,” which was a collection of everybody’s best work that summer.

The experience I had at eSummer was easily the most effective, challenging, and exciting summer learning program I’ve ever had. My advice to future eSummer students is to dig deeper and try something new that is out of your comfort zone. The possibilities and support here are truly endless!

WITH SO MANY SUMMER OPTIONS OUT THERE, WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

he stereotype of a teenage summer may involve hitting the beach, babysitting, working at a boutique or hanging by the pool, but the truth is that many teens today are looking to spend their summers engaged in creative or educational pursuits.

However, with language, academic, and arts programs all available to help prepare a teen for college life, it can be hard to know which is the best choice. If you’re a teen considering one of these summer experiences, read on to learn which one is best for you!

FOSTER A LOVE OF ART

“Summer is a time I can do things I can't do during the school year,” says New York high school student Laurel Aronian. This last summer, Laurel, only 14 years old,

enrolled in an online writing course for teens via Vanderbilt University, where she tapped into her love of writing poetry and creative writing.

“I could do it from home while sitting outside and received personalized feedback from a university program on how to improve my writing.” Not only that, but she generated a portfolio of work that she’s proud of to this day.

“Summer arts courses allow students to see if they like being immersed in the arts 24/7 or if they would prefer a college/university where they will have a more diverse group of academic interests,” explains Florence Lehr, an Independent Educational Consultant at ARTiculate. “In general, arts programs allow students to grow both their skills and their networks -- important even at the high school level.”

2023 SUMMER & GAP GUIDE | 5

FOCUS IN ON ACADEMIC PURSUITS

In addition to (sometimes) offering transferable college credits, many academic-based summer programs allow teens the rare opportunity to learn from industry experts at a young age.

Walter Saukin, Ph.D, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Manhattan College, points out that an academic summer course is great prep for college life and beyond.

“College prep programs can provide insight into various professions, what the associated technology is, and what is the associated growth. When these students graduate college, whatever profession they choose, they will be able to grow.”

Teenager Kate Ciesielski was able to experience this growth first-hand. She chose an online summer course in Health and Medicine at the University of Vermont, which helped her prepare for college and beyond. »

“I’m so thankful that I had the opportunity to participate,” Ciesielski said. “By the end of the program, I had met a lovely group of people whom I still keep in contact with, gained a much clearer understanding of what I want to do, and feel like I could go to college tomorrow, which I feel puts me ahead of a lot of other students.”

A high school senior, Ciesielski is now applying to UVM – in fact, it’s one of her top-choice colleges. This is yet another great perk of studying at a college that perhaps wasn’t previously on your radar: you may fall in love with the school after getting a taste of it as a high school student.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN LANGUAGE

If you’d like to learn another language and more about a different culture instead, consider a language-based summer program.

“There are so many amazing ways for students to spend their summer,” says William Cavanagh, Director of Admissions at EF Education First, which offers numerous study abroad opportunities for high schoolers.

“Arts programs are great for students who are trying to express their creative side, and academic programs are perfect for students who really want to boost their resume. However, language programs can be a perfect option for students looking to achieve both goals. When conducted in an immersion style, language programs truly allow students to find new ways of expressing themselves and understand interpersonal communication.”

“Learning a new language during the summer is the best time to do so,” said Laura Alonso, a student, studied abroad in Japan via Education First.. “Not many people consider this option as it is not an easy task! However, … putting down on your college apps or a job application that you know a second language will give you an advantage. You could also impress your friends and family with your new language skills!”

She adds: “Even if you don’t become entirely fluent by the end of summer, you already have experience studying a new language. It’s something you improve throughout your life.”

Why Did You Choose to Participate in Andover Summer?

I chose to attend the in-person Andover Summer program because of the multitude of opportunities I would have to grow and make friendships that last a lifetime. Being able to live in a diverse community where everyone has different mindsets and sees things from their own unique perspective is so extraordinary, and I was intrigued when I learned about the program. Everyone is nervous at first. Andover Summer is many people's first time living without their parents/guardians, and while it is no doubt a challenge to adjust at first, the skills and relationships that you build are incredible.

What Was A Typical Day Like At Andover Summer?

Organization and time management skills as well as learning how to be open-minded and confident are key skills that I greatly improved at Andover Summer. As a member of the lower school institute, a typical day wasn't just typical. There were new experiences and people I met and encountered everyday. I woke up around 6:00, got ready for the day, and walked to the breakfast dining hall, Paresky Commons. I always met new people while walking to breakfast and on campus in general, which is such a genuinely cool thing. I took the High School Prep Course (math and English) which took up the morning. I used to walk to the dining hall with friends after class and, depending on the weather, have lunch in whatever location was best fit for the day. I personally loved to eat on the tables that were right next to my dorm with friends. I then went to my afternoon activity which was swimming and had the opportunity to meet even more people there. I went downtown to eat out with friends, went on trips to

various locations, and spent quality time exploring campus with friends, as well as doing my homework for my classes. Wherever I went, there was someone new to talk to. The fun never ended.

What Was Your Favorite Part of Andover Summer?

My favorite part of the program was definitely the trip to Hampton Beach. This was towards the end of the summer, and the amount of independence my friends and I had to explore the boardwalk and beach was amazing. We went to an amusement park where we rode some roller coasters, and we also spent time working on group assignments and projects in our dorm and in the consummate Oliver Wendell Holmes Library.

What Advice Do You Have for Students Interested in Andover Summer?

I would advise prospective students to be open and friendly when you first arrive. It's definitely overwhelming, but the support the faculty provides you, as well as the relationships you build with your friends make the experience that much better. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you have any problems or questions. Participate in optional events - they're a great way of meeting new people and experiencing new things. Everyone is here for you, and be open to changing. The point of the experience is to grow into a better person, being around incredible people. The academics, fun, and soft skills I learned and experienced at Andover Summer supplemented by the supportive faculty and perfect friends all balanced out to make a phenomenal summer experience.

2023 SUMMER & GAP GUIDE | 9

My name is Somin Virmani, and I am a current senior at PA. I grew up taking classes at the Russian School of Math in Andover up until the eighth grade, after which I took a precalculus summer course.

My time spent at RSM has helped forge my critical thinking skills, empowering me for my future. By learning algebra, precalculus, and geometry through RSM's curriculum, I began developing my problem solving skills. I fondly remember moments in my Wednesday evening geometry class when all the students in the class would pitch potential solutions to the *seemingly* impossible problem on the board. I can still feel the warm energy in the classroom, bewildered smiles on all our faces. Together (and with a few clues from our teacher) we would finally identify a valid proof.

Whether I am in an organic chemistry class trying to synthesize a molecule or in a history class forming an argument, I can rely on the mental foundation I created at RSM. These skills will continue to help me in the future, and not just in academic contexts. As an adult, I will need to 'problem-solve' and, more broadly, think through challenging situations. Because of RSM, I can face challenges calmly and logically, sporting the same smile I beamed on a Wednesday evening years back.

I must add, however, that RSM would not have been as enriching an experience if not for its spectacular teachers. I thrive in

academic environments where my teacher is committed to my growth, and I found such spaces at RSM – shoutout to Ms. Nemcova and Ms. Soltan. For these reasons, I highly recommend RSM as a place to learn, grow, and thrive.
