FoodTrends Of 2018 From mala-everything to bubble tea, here’s a look back at some culinary trends that took over our dining plates. BY FABIAN LOO

MALA MANIA Mala’s unusual appeal is undeniable. Out of nowhere, stalls selling this spicy, tonguenumbing concoction are popping up everywhere – people just can’t get enough of this flavoursome liquid fire. It pairs well with instant noodles, slices of meat, vegetables and basically everything. So much so that in the height of this fiery trend, it started making its way into snacks, fast food restaurants and even the menu of cafes.

Teddy Bear Mala Broth (from $9.90), Spice World If dipping slivers of tender meat in mala broth sounds like a good idea, you may want to drop by Spice World for their unique teddy bear-shaped mala spice mix. Don’t be fooled by its cute appearance – its formidable soup base of chillies, peppercorn and beef oil sure packs a punch!

Hand-cut Potato Wedges ($8), Mala Mala Turn your snacks into an exotic spice adventure with homegrown brand, Mala Mala. As its name suggests, the company is created thanks to the founders’ love for mala, which they reimagined into an indulgent snack available in varying levels of spiciness.

Ever Spring Cheezo Tea ($5.50), HEYTEA Popular bubble tea chain HEYTEA often sees hour-long queues in China. Now, the original creator of cheese tea has made its first overseas venture – right here in Singapore. Highly recommended is their Ever Spring Cheezo Tea, a base of oolong with gentle floral notes capped with their signature salty cheese foam.

Bitter Orange Kombucha ($4.80), Teabrick Who knew fermented tea and bubble tea would make such a delicious combination? Indulge in a guilt-free treat at Teabrick, where they cultivate their probiotic drinks in-house. Pair their signature Bitter Orange Kombucha (it’s not bitter at all!) with healthy toppings like red bean rice, blue pea ruby and goji berries.

BUBBLING OVER The unofficial drink of our nation: bubble tea. Over the years, we’ve seen bubble tea stores come and go. Despite the crazy competition in the BBT scene, new brands are still popping up – from tea connoisseurs, fresh pearl creators, to the outright crazy (salted egg milk tea, anyone?). These innovative companies are pulling out all the stops to attract thirsty customers.

Pulpy Strawberry Kiss ($6.80), TaiGai Fresh fruits are heavily featured in TaiGai’s signature MILKY KISS series, from the tart-sweet strawberry and jasmine tea blend, to the special fruitinfused cheese topping. The result? A smooth, addictive pulp-like texture. Bonus: Some variants even come in an adorable bear-shaped lid!

BLING IT UP NYX Sugar Trip Squad Eyeshadow Palette, $36 This mesmerising palette features a range of high-impact, super-pigmented hues to bring your transformative look to life.

With the festive season in full swing, it’s the perfect time to experiment with bolder makeup styles. Take a cue from beauty influencer Cloe (@cloesshi), who added a dash of fun to her look with a bright-eyed flutter. To really make her peepers pop, she went with sparkly lashes for extra bling and a wash of peachy eyeshadow all over her eye area. Talk about eye-catching!

24

IT Cosmetics Superhero Mascara Confetti Popper, $20 If your lashes are always hitting your lenses, use an eyelash curler to curl your lashes upwards from the roots before setting it with a voluminous mascara.

Cover FX Power Play Concealer, $43 Wearing spectacles tend to create emphasis on your undereye circles, so be sure to cover up any discolourations with a concealer.

Kat Von D Ink Well Long-Wear Matte Eyeliner, $32 Rule of thumb: the thicker your frames, the thicker your liner should be! For this look, a classic cat eye will do the trick.

Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint in Unveil, $36 If you’re not feeling brave enough to go completely noir for your lips, opt for a rich chocolate shade that’s more wearable for an everyday look.

GO GOTHIC

NYX Ombre Blush in Mauve Me, $21

Vamp up your routine with makeup artist Arielle’s (@miss.sugar.peach) modern take on the ’90s-inspired grunge look – think porcelain skin, jet-black liner and pillowy brown lips a la Kylie Jenner. Pop on some statement glasses and you’ll look like you stepped straight out of an old-school gothic novel (but even cooler).

10 Years With IU AT THE AGE OF 25, K-POP DARLING IU HAS ACHIEVED MORE THAN MOST 20-SOMETHINGS CAN EVER DREAM OF. HERE’S A LOOK BACK AT HER DECADE-SPANNING CAREER. BY CHONG XIN YI

IU performs in Singapore for her 10th Anniversary Tour Concert on 15 December 2018 at The Star Theatre. Head over to www.teenage.com.sg for our full review!

W

hen she first burst onto the scene with her fresh-faced charms, no one could have predicted that the 15-year-old would go on to become one of the most successful solo acts in the K-pop industry. But that’s exactly what this one-woman powerhouse has done. Since making her debut in 2008, IU has built a name for herself as a multi-talented singersongwriter and is now celebrating her 10th anniversary of debut – but her journey to stardom hasn’t been all that easy. In light of her recent commemorative concert in Singapore, we look back at some of her career highlights that have made IU into the icon she is today. While many would’ve expected IU to start out with a cutesy concept, the young starlet went with a haunting, mystical approach for her debut EP Lost and Found, which showed off her unique ability to pull off dark themes at such a young age. But it seemed like the public wasn’t as easily convinced, which caused her album to fail commercially and her image to be shifted to a more accessible one (that would eventually coin her as the ‘Nation’s Little Sister’). In a later interview, she explained: “I’m grateful [that my first album failed]. If I had become successful as soon as I made my debut, I wouldn’t appreciate the popularity I’m enjoying now.” What else can we say, we love a humble queen!

2008

After a lukewarm reception to her debut album, IU sought out a new musical direction as she traded her bubblegum roots (think ‘Boo’ and ‘Marshmallow’) for a more orchestral sound in her third EP Real. Her gamble paid off – her lead single ‘Good Day’ not only propelled her to the top of the charts, but also saw her trademark “threeoctave” high note become a phenomenon amongst fellow K-pop stars. Remember when all our favourite second-gen idols were attempting to pull off this legendary note on every TV show?

PHOTO: ONE PRODUCTION

2010

2013

Showcasing a more mature and sophisticated side to her artistry, IU’s third studio

effort Modern Times was arguably the album that cemented her status as a burgeoning singer-songwriter. The result was an intriguing, musicallydiverse record that featured an eclectic blend of genres from avant-garde jazz to bossa nova stylings – all melding perfectly with one another to create a cohesive sound. This was a significant year for IU as she started opening up about herself through her retrospective mini album Chat-Shire. Despite its commercial success, the album unfortunately got swept up in a series of controversies that led to IU issuing an apology. “I wanted to create an album that allowed me to honestly reveal myself, but because it was my first time producing, there were a lot of weak spots and I feel apologetic about it,” she addressed the issue at a concert. “While there are a lot of regrets, the album is still who I am to some extent. It’s very dear to me.”

Beyond her own catalog of chart-topping hits, IU also has plenty of noteworthy collaborations to her name. Here are our top picks!

2015

It didn’t take IU long to bounce back from the setbacks. If anything, it only made her stronger than ever, which she demonstrates with what she does best: music. In what was perhaps her most personal effort yet, her fourth studio album Palette perfectly summarised her growth over the years. More impressively, it also marked her first chart-topper on Billboard World Albums – and she’s the first female K-pop solo act to do so!

2017

Fast forward to today, it’s hard to believe that IU already has a decade-long career behind her. As an anniversary gift to her beloved UAENAs, the songstress returns with the groovy alt-R&B track ’BBIBBI’, where she casually calls out her naysayers and proudly declares her independence. For an artiste who has never been afraid of pushing her own boundaries, we can’t wait to witness what new levels of success IU will accomplish in the coming years.

ADVOCATE FOR A CAUSE Have a cause you believe strongly in? Instead of silently waiting for change, take the initiative to voice out your opinions and highlight the issue. There are many ways to go about doing it, be it sending out an old-fashioned letter to the representative organisation, starting an online petition, or simply posting it on social media. With the advent of technology, there’s a high chance that your message may go viral on the Internet, which makes spreading of information that much more efficient.

BE THE

Change Let 2019 be the year of championing change. Here are eight things you can do to make the world a better place, one step at a time.

64

Clearing your wardrobe and finding a pile of clothes collecting dust at a corner? Donate your pre-loved threads to secondhand stores. Organising your room and stumbling upon a stack of old textbooks? Pass it on to lessprivileged students. Accidentally stocked up on too many boxes of cereal? Feed needy families via a charity soup kitchen. Rather than disposing items you no longer need, consider giving them away to those who need it more. As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

TEXT: LYNETTE GOH, CHEW HUI LING

DONATE UNWANTED ITEMS

BE THE CHANGE THAT YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD.

MAKE SUSTAINABLE CHOICES You may not realise it when you’re neckdeep in retail therapy, but there’s a fair share of companies in the market that dabble in unethical practices such as slave labour and poor working conditions. Support sustainable clothing labels like MATTER and Esse, as well as eco-friendly beauty brands like Katfood and Handmade Heroes instead. These brands are making an effort to reduce carbon footprint with ethically sourced materials and do not compromise on quality. So the next time you’re out shopping, do ample research beforehand to make a more informed purchasing decision.

– MAHATMA GANDHI

DITCH THE STRAWS Get this: we use 2.2 million straws a day, just in Singapore alone. And by 2050, chances are we might see more plastic floating in the ocean than the amount of marine life. Major corporations such as Starbucks and KFC have since implemented a no-straw policy that will be put into effect within the next few years; but change can’t happen unless we do our own part for the environment. Make plastic sips a thing of the past by cultivating the habit of using a reusable straw, and encourage others to do the same too!

VOLUNTEER ABROAD While the rest of us are lucky enough to enjoy the luxuries of living in a firstworld country, there are people in other countries who might not even have a proper roof over their heads. If you have the time to spare, why not volunteer overseas to enrich the lives of the less fortunate? Help build houses in a rural village, save endangered species from extinction, or teach English to disadvantaged children at an orphanage. Not sure how to get started? Local organisations such as the Youth Corps, Habitat for Humanity and Expedition SG hold overseas programmes regularly, so hit them up!

PAY IT FORWARD LIGHTS OUT This sounds like a no-brainer, but you’ll be surprised at how many of you leave the room with the lights on. A little goes a long way, so do your part in helping to reduce energy consumption and conserve the environment. More than just light switches, don’t forget to unplug appliances when not in use, turn off your showerhead when lathering shampoo, and avoid charging your electronic devices throughout the night.

In a world that has become so vastly divided, something as small as a mere act of kindness can create a ripple effect and make a big difference. It can be something as simple as holding the door open for others, tipping your waiters during lunch or complimenting a stranger on the streets. All it takes is just a few seconds of your time to make someone else’s day, and you’ll feel so much more fulfilled knowing that you’ve done a good deed. Spreading goodwill has never felt better!

SUPPORT LOCAL Thanks to the global popularity of Crazy Rich Asians that put our little red dot on the world map, it’s a great time to be showcasing our Singaporean pride – and what better way to embrace our roots than by supporting all things local? Check out emerging artistes at a local music festival, catch indie flicks by homegrown directors, and discover young entrepreneurs who started their own independent businesses in Singapore. We may be small, but we can do big things together!
