Ed's Note Hey everyone,

Spring is our second chance to start afresh (third if you count the Lunar New Year), which makes

it easier to ignore the oddity of following a seasonal cycle when it’s

full-on summer all year round here. Apart from sussing out the

hottest Spring/Summer 2017

beauty (p. 24) and fashion trends (p. 32), we recommend handy tips and DIYs to freshen up your life (p. 72) and your space (p. 74). Fair warning for those who aren’t going on March holidays: we have

a tempting list of binge-worthy dramas (p. 53) and trendy themed cafes (p. 10) to visit. Try to resist blowing through ‘em at one go. In celebration of International

Women’s Day, we take a

look at inspiring female

protagonists(p. 84) and musicians (p.64), and whip up a mini guide to empowering yourself (p.86)! It’s definitely applicable to even the guys. We speak to two millennials in

pursuit of their dreams Matte lipsticks are always a hit or miss, but the shu uemura rouge unlimited supreme matte range ($38) doesn’t disappoint. It offers a velvety smooth, non-drying matte finish that applies like a dream and stays on all day. Interestingly enough, our cover girl, Pony and I share the same favourite shade, PK375 – it’s a flattering dusty rose hue that’s totally MLBB (my lips but better).

(p. 78) – we hope that their stories

will serve as inspiration for you

to explore your own passions. Keep on slaying!

Give It A Shot Take your Instagram game up a notch with these not-so-conventional photo editing apps. By Gladys Lee

Cortex Camera

Enlight

$5.98, Available on Apple iTunes App Store

MIX by Camera360

Free, Available on Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store

An underrated gem of an editing app, MIX offers an impressive array of photo effects, filters and overlay options through a userfriendly interface. This means even beginners will easily be able to mix, combine and enhance different effects. Additional functions comprise in-depth colour and photo adjustment tools, but we think that the depth of field and light leak tools, which include stage lights, flares and weather elements, deserve special mention too!

April

Free, available on Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store

A popular choice amongst Instagram photographers, Enlight includes everything one could ask for in a photoediting app. It houses both basic and advanced retouching tools like colour-correcting, filters, perspective adjustment, the Clone tool to remove unwanted elements, as well as artistic effects to choreograph your masterpiece. A tiny downside is the amount of time you’d take to explore and get used to its myriad of functions, but its clean and intuitive interface helps speed things along.

Creating aestheticallypleasing results that echo the app’s white space-centric interface, April lends innumerable possibilities with fully customisable collage layouts and poster templates – switch between square, portrait and landscape modes, resizable border widths – complete with over 40 stunning filters and text options. The app even comes with in-built portrait recognition intelligence that helps crop integral parts of the picture (i.e. the main subject). Cool or what?

16

$4.48, Available on Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store

High-quality mobile cameras are aplenty, but low-light situations are still a challenge for most. Enter Cortex Camera: designed to minimise digital noise in such scenarios, the app works its magic by taking multiple pictures, stablising and averaging them to achieve a crisp, and detailed shot, even in the shadows. Experiment with its exposure compensation and shutter speed for different results and prepare to be amazed.

Typic

$5.98, Available on Apple iTunes App Store

Darkroom

YouCam Perfect

Free, Available on Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store

Beauty apps are a dime a dozen, but YouCam Perfect is literally a step above the usual beauty editors and cameras. Apart from the usual mix of selfie editing tools, the app incorporates a real-time beautifying camera, which tints your lips, has your virtual eyeliner on fleek, etc., all in exact precision thanks to its cutting-edge technology. Here’s to effortless selfies all day, every day!

Free, Available on Apple iTunes App Store

If you’re one of those hipster artists who likes to embellish your minimalistic pictures with some whimsical letterings, Typic’s right up your alley. Boasting 105 fonts and over 500 elegant design elements, go wild creating Pinterest-ish quotes or photos with cutesy doodles. Go a step beyond with its masking tool, which allows for intricate layering within your image. While it doesn’t come cheap, its hassle-free and professional designing software (comparable to the likes of Adobe Illustrator) properties you’ll get, makes it a bargain in our book.

Have your very own darkroom literally in the palm of your hand. More than providing users access to a standard set of in-house filters, the standout feature of Darkroom is the app’s ability to isolate a particular colour range and manually adjust the luminance and saturation of a particular shade in your image. Also equipped with the RGB curve function for precision in tone-adjustment, Darkroom skims just the basic photography essentials that beginners can easily get a hang of.

Fragment

$2.98, Available on Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store

Graphic design of minimalist dreams in the form of prismatic art – that’s what Fragment does for you. Choose from an array of abstract frames, shapes and pattern overlays, and your image will be transformed into an indie-album-coverlike artwork with the prism-like glass shards. The app allows users to manipulate how the image looks like in and outside of the fragment pieces, be it saturation, opacity, adding colours, or even randomising the pieces with the Shuffle option. It’s never been easier to up your Instagram game!

12 If you’re a fan of Guess’ Rigor range, you’ll love the luxury brand’s smartwatch counterpart. Meet Guess Connect ($559), a Martianpowered beauty that comes in a wide variety of fancy finishes to express your individual style. And it’s not just a pretty face – there’s much to love about its voice command technology, which hooks you up to your phone so you can ask directions, send a text or answer any calls directly from your smartwatch.

10

9 Its design might look chunkier on delicate wrists, but, the Moto 360 2nd Gen (from $479) still scores big on the style front and there’s nothing half-baked about its functions either. Sleeker, crisper and smarter than the original Moto 360, the sequel features the largest screen-to-case ratio of any smartwatch on the market, leaving plenty of room for you to navigate all the information at a glance.

10 The Huawei Watch has always been a hit among the guys, but bring on the Swarovski crystals and you have the gals on board. While the original pieces sport fine leather or stainless steel straps, the female-friendly Elegant ($499) and Jewel ($599) designs come with bespoke watchfaces and are outfitted in premium rose gold cases. They don’t differ much in terms of capabilities, but there’s an additional built-in speaker so you can easily make calls from your wrist.

20

11 An intelligent alternative to your average fitness tracker, the Withings Activité Pop ($269) has a lightweight, colourful build that can take you from morning classes to mid-day workout sessions to late-night gatherings. The Activité Pop does everything a traditional smartwatch’s supposed to do, but its fitness game is hard to beat. Not only does it count your steps, it even logs in your running miles and swimming laps while recording the amount of calories burned.

Flake Out Stay dewy and glowy all day with our roundup of the best hydrating heroes for every skin type. By chew hui ling

Dry Skin feeling taut and itchy, makeup caking up, flakes piling on your face – all these are prime symptoms of perpetually thirsty skin. We recommend getting a cream-type moisturiser loaded with hydrating, moisturebinding ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and ceramides to help restore skin’s protective barriers.

Sensitive Those with sensitive skin will know the itchy and painful nightmare that happens after using harsh formulas that might cause swelling, peeling or even rashes. Stay away from products containing any traces of paraben, alcohol, fragrances and other potential allergens; and switch to an anti-inflammatory one that will be gentle enough for even the most trigger-prone of complexions.

TRY Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Brightening and Smoothing Moisture Treatment, $78 A miracle blend of glycolic acid and skin-clarifying ingredients, this heavy-duty saviour glides over rough patches with ease and leaves you with a luminous glow. Bonus? It also houses vitamin C molecules to help brighten skin tone while helping to even out discolourations.

30

TRY Curél Intensive Moisture Cream, $38.80 You can’t go wrong with Curél’s range of dermatologisttested products – such as this tub of ceramide-infused goodness that penetrates deep within the skin while delivering an intense boost of hydration. Plus, we love that it goes on airy-light despite its creamy texture.

Normal Most people with seemingly flawless skin would settle for a basic skincare routine, but it’s important to invest in a good moisturiser to keep your skin in tip-top shape. We recommend starting your mornings with a light daytime moisturiser that imparts all-day hydration, and follow up with a rich cream that will work its magic as you sleep.

Combination It’s a lil’ tricky to care for combination skin types – oily on the T-zones, dry on the cheeks, and probably an angry mess of both on the forehead. Go for a lightweight gel chock-full of emollients and antioxidants that will lock in hydration without leaving a greasy residue.

Oily Putting on moisturiser may seem redundant for those with oily complexions, but skipping this crucial step will only cause your skin to become dehydrated and produce even more sebum to compensate it. Opt for a water-based, noncomedogenic formula that will replenish moisture levels without clogging up your pores.

Acne-Prone Breaking out no matter what you slather on? Chances are you are using products containing harsh chemicals that cause harsh breakouts on your already troubled skin. Reach for a paraben-free treatment packed with acne-fighting components such as salicylic acid and other natural ingredients to help clear up blemishes without drying you out.

TRY TRY Bioderma Hydrabio GelCreme, $41.90 Comprising a hypoallergenic mix of enriched vitamins, this refreshing gel-cream smoothens out blotchy patches and restores skin to its natural radiance. Its lightweight texture also works well as a daily moisturiser to hydrate skin even in our humid weather.

THEFACESHOP Dr. Belmeur Moisturizer Hydratant, $34 Expect nothing but only the gentlest of formulations from THEFACESHOP’s all-new derma-cosmetics range, which is filled with plant-derived ingredients and essential nutrients to balance out your contradictive complexion. And it doesn’t contain any artificial flavours which makes this multitasker perfect for everyday use.

TRY Orbis AquaForce Moisturiser, $30 Leave it to Orbis’ cult hydration series to do the trick. Formulated with Moisture Magnet AQ, this renewed hydrator traps in moisture from the atmosphere so your skin will be kept smooth and supple throughout the day.

31

TRY Proactiv+ Skin Brightening Hydrator, $29.90 Infused with an arsenal of potent vitamins and botanical extracts, this creamy moisturiser effectively calms down acne inflammation, minimises pores and keeps scars at bay.

Band Of Brothers By Chew Hui Ling

They are not a fan of stereotypes

Forget dreamboat dudes singing in colour-coordinated outfits and dancing to feel-good pop. These are the kind of guys who play instruments, pen their own compositions and rock out on stage the way they want to – evidently, it isn’t the formula most boy bands would follow. They admitted, “There have been some misunderstandings surrounding our musical identity. Thus, we wanted to reveal the truth about such prejudice against us in Where’s The Truth?.” Keep doing what you’re doing, FTI!

Nobody but Primadonnas

It’s no secret that FTISLAND and Primadonnas have a very special relationship, and it’s especially heartwarming to see longtime fans showing up to their concert year after year. Revealing the most surprising thing that happened during their [The Truth] tour, “We’d see fans waving slogans in all our concerts, but one we found particularly memorable was during our Hong Kong show, where our Primadonnas changed up the lyrics of ‘Take Me Now’ and made it into banners.” How aww-inducing is that?

10 years of friendship (and counting)

K-pop groups come and go, but FTISLAND is one of the few who stayed strong amidst all the contract conflicts and member discords surrounding the older generation of idols (ahem). “We

48

used to fight a lot, but nowadays we’d talk it out. There are no secrets between us so we trust each other a lot.” Minhwan continued with a touching anecdote: “I was experiencing a slump period so I called Hongki and went over to meet him at five in the morning. I burst into tears as soon as I saw him; that was when I realised that we can be of support for each other without saying a word.” Faith in bromance, restored.

The golden age of FTISLAND?

With a massively successful catalogue of countless records, prestigious awards and sold-out tours, one would think that FTISLAND has already lived out all their dreams. Apparently, there’s still a long way to go. “We’ve been working hard so far, but we think FTISLAND’s prime will come during our 30s to 40s. We believe that if we keep producing good music, the golden age for band music will be back again. Until then, we will strive to become a band with a strong colour like Bon Jovi.” An ajusshi-fied FTISLAND? Bring it on!

Missed out on FTISLAND Live [The Truth] in Singapore? Check out the full concert lowdown on www.teenage.com.sg – Pokémon Go adventures, chilli crab song remixes, failed Singlish shenanigans and all!

Photos: Red Spade Ventures, FNC Entertainment

For a K-pop outfit that’s a decade into their career, FTISLAND possesses a unique brand of authencity so sorely lacked in K-pop. In lieu of their [The Truth] concert here, the K-band opened up about their musical evolution, idol stereotypes and future goals in an exclusive email interview.

Man Of The Moment

King of the lovelorn, Kim Soo Hyun doppleganger, and all-around hearthrob – meet Mandopop’s newest breakout star, Eric Chou. By Chew Hui Ling

A

22-year-old who skyrocketed to the top of the charts with his penchant for heartbreaking ballads, Eric Chou is Mandopop’s answer to Ed Sheeran. You’re probably no stranger to his breakout hits ‘Let’s Not Be Friends In The Future’ and ‘How Have You Been?’ – which chalked up a whopping 128 million views combined on YouTube – but there’s so much more to love about the budding singer-songwriter. As we prepare for his upcoming gig on 18 March, here are a few of the reasons why we can’t get enough of the rising crooner.

Photo: Ace Music Productions

#1

He gives us serious relationship goals

With two self-composed albums under his belt, Eric definitely knows a thing or two about penning a romantic tune. We’re almost certain there must be a lucky lady in Eric’s life…and there is, except it isn’t exactly the image we had in mind. It’s none other than his furry companion Chopin, named after the classical composer. “My dog gave me a lot of love when I was writing songs for my new album. It was by my side and one of the first to listen to my compositions.” True love right there!

#2

He’s what cover dreams are made of

Having spent his teenage years in Boston, it’s no surprise the Taiwanese singer has added some pretty wicked English covers into his portfolio: ‘Pillowtalk’ by ZAYN, ‘Sorry’ by Justin Bieber and ‘Cold Water’ by Major Lazer, just to name a few. We love how he puts his soulful flavour on each track. Also, do yourself a favour and check out his collab of Charlie Puth’s ‘One Call Away’ with The Sam Willows – the lad harmonises so well with the fab foursome that he could easily pass off as their fifth member.

#3

Park Bo Gum ain’t got nothing on him

New ship alert? As much as we adore our Love in the Moonlight (LITM) couple, we couldn’t help but swoon over the moment Eric appeared during Kim Yoo Jung’s Taiwan fanmeeting back in February. Revealing that she’s a fan of Eric, the actress was performing a humble rendition of ‘How Have You Been?’ when the former surprised her on stage. “I would’ve worn a prettier dress if I knew he was coming,” she gleefully exclaimed. Well Park Bo Gum (LITM co-star), looks like you’ve got competition!

Why you should watch it: Hot on the heels of Descendants of the Sun, there’s a good reason why Goblin was raking in the highest viewer ratings for the past few months. From the A-list cast to the gripping script to the downright breathtaking cinematography, everything about it was played to perfection. Although let’s be real: it’s the accidental bromance between the two cantankerous immortals that kept us going.

Shuffle, Play, Repeat From K-pop to J-rock to indie, we review the newest music releases to have on repeat (or skip). By Chew Hui Ling

Ambitions

ONE OK ROCK Bigger, bolder and better than before, Ambitions is an ambitious follow-up to ONE OK ROCK’s (OOR) groundbreaking success from 35xxxv. The result is an experimental record that reflects the J-rock juggernaut’s lofty dreams of conquering the world. Switching effortlessly from euphoric stadium anthems to stripped-back acoustics, ONE OK ROCK wastes no time in delivering what they do best and more.

Repeat these

Fast Forward these

‘Bombs Away’

‘American Gir ls’

‘Always Coming Back’

‘One Way Ticket’

Leaping into a snarl of punchy guitar riffs and thumping drum beats, this blistering opener packs a familiar wallop that will satisfy old-time OOR fans and draw in new listeners with its powerful pop hook. Talk about exploring uncharted territory!

While OOR retains a feisty rock heart at its core, we love how they always make sure to add a soft, personable touch to their music. Particularly memorable was this soul-baring piece, which speaks of Taka’s adolescent memories of his father.

50

A straight-up pop-punk track that wouldn’t sound out of place in a typical boy band record, ‘American Girls’ felt overly stuffed with mainstream ingredients that choked up its otherwise jam-worthy potential.

One of the band’s biggest assets is their knack at adopting influences and making it into their own, but ‘One Way Ticket’ risked coming across as a grab bag of genres. Gotta give ‘em kudos for attempting to break out of their usual fare though!

I See You The xx

On what’s arguably their most expansive effort yet, The xx’s third studio album is a culmination of their sonic evolution since bursting onto the indie scene with their signature brand of dream pop greatness back in 2005. I See You doesn’t stray far from the minimalist compositions they’re known for, but it’s a genrebending record where The xx comes fully into their own.

‘I Dare You’

We’d never have expected the English trio to put out such an exuberant track in the past, but here we have ‘I Dare You’: a frothy serving of party escapism that beckons you to pump up the volume and head straight for the dance floor.

‘Lips’

Featuring a dazzling mix of heady drumbeats, hazy synth twists and layered vocals, ‘Lips’ drifts listeners back to the trance-like soundscape we’re used to, yet leaves us craving for more.

‘Say Something Loving’

Albeit an intriguing track, ‘Say Something Loving’ falters in its rhythmic footsteps when placed directly after the blaring, trumpet-laden opener that is ‘Dangerous’.

‘Performance’

A handful of classic The xx arrangements anchors the mid-section of the tracklist, each equally mesmerising in their delivery yet strikingly similar to each other when listened back-to-back. ‘Performance’, an emotive ballad, manages to redeem itself with its heartstrings-tugging story arc.

Quiz

ARE YOU

A Pack Rat? A compulsive collector or closet clean freak? Take this quiz to find out. BY gladys lee

3. When your friends suggest a sleepover at your place, you say:

5. Does your work desk/home look like it’s been hit by a tornado?

a) “Sure, let’s go now!”

b) “Maybe tomorrow, it’s kinda messy right now.” c) (Freak out inside and change the topic) “I think I feel like singing karaoke instead!”

mostly

A

a) Of course, I keep up with only the latest trends.

The True Minimalist

Congrats! You’re a S minimalist at heart, and thrive in a clutter-free space. Some may label you as a “neat freak”, but who cares? Give yourself a pat on the back, but don’t slack off ‘cause staying neat takes effort; you may live in a tidy environment, but we’re guessing there might be a storage room or particular drawer specifically for stashing random junk. If yes, it’s probably time to tackle that area and wear that minimalist badge with pride!

mostly

B

S

a) Books – only the ones I’d read over and over again though! b) Beauty product samples – I’m not sure if they have expired though...

b) Somewhere in the storage room. c) Stacked up on my bedroom floor, probably collecting dust.

Oh no, you might have fallen prey to the clutches of the clutter mentality unknowingly! Your moderate pack rat tendencies most likely stem from your sentimentality – you collect keepsakes like concert tickets, birthday cards and old clothing. It’s always nice to have memorabilia to treasure, but it might be time to get rid of them. Item buildup is unavoidable when we all lead busy lives, but with constant effort, you can surely keep it under control.

mostly

C

c) I guess… I’ll clear them up soon though.

6. Which do you collect:

a) Good riddance, they are long gone from my home!

The Sentimental Collector

b) Maybe, but it’s called an organised mess – I know where my things are.

c) Pens that ran of out ink – I can reuse them if I find the refills.

The Hardcore Hoarder

Pray tell, are you genuinely oblivious to the clutter at home, or do you always put cleaning off till tomorrow? If throngs of knickknacks permanently occupy even the floor space, you’ve amassed too many things. Take time off to sift through the dusty piles seriously – that stack of half-used notebooks, the pair of old sneakers thrown haphazardly under your bed – donate or dispose of the things that you’ve long forgotten about. You don’t wanna jolt awake from nightmares of being buried alive in junk, do you?

Uglies

What it is about: Tally Youngblood can’t wait to turn 16 and qualify for extreme cosmetic surgery that will make her “pretty” (like everyone else in her society) and allow her coveted access to New Pretty Town where citizens party 24/7. When her best friend runs away to join the ‘Smokies’, a group of renegades rebelling against the operation, Tally is forced by the government to find the group and betray her friend. But what she learns from the city runaways has her questioning everything she knew. Now Tally has a choice to make – save her newfound friends or becoming ‘Pretty’ like she had always dreamed of.

Girl Bosses,

Represent! In celebration of International Women’s Day, we highlight empowering female protagonists for that daily dose of #GirlPower!

Why it’s important: Touching on a cultural obsession with physical perfection, Uglies challenges the unrealistic standards of beauty set by society and teaches readers that it’s perfectly okay to be comfortable in their own skin.

The Lunar Chronicles

By Scott Westerfeld

By Marissa Meyer

Estrella’s Quinceañera

By Malin Alegria

What it is about: MexicanAmerican Estrella Alvarez is about to turn 15, and her mum is in the midst of planning her quinceañera. But she has no interest in the cultural tradition, calling it “lame”. Wanting to fit in at the private school she got a scholarship to, she changes her name and yearns for a lifestyle like those of her wealthy classmates. Finding herself torn between two cultures, Estrella wants to be her own person, but does she really know who she wants to be?

What it is about: A modern take on old classics like Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood, The Lunar Chronicles follows the journey of Linh Cinder (a cyborg mechanic) and the unlikely friends and allies she meets along the way as they embark on a mission to save the citizens of Earth from a plague, and the planet as a whole from being taken over by Lunar Queen, Levana Blackburn. Why it’s important: Making Linh Cinder different – she’s a cyborg in a world full of humans after all – Marissa Meyer tackles the issues of prejudice and discrimination, as well as rising above societal expectations and breaking out of the stereotypical norms. Despite being set in a dystopian world, these are everyday issues that are relevant right now more than ever.

Why it’s important: Whether we like to admit it or not, we always find ourselves in situations where we will change a certain part of ourselves in a bid to fit in with our peers. But Malin Alegria shows us that it’s perfectly acceptable to stay true to our roots in the search for our identity.
