Your Say LETTER OF THE MONTH

Holler at us! We want to know what you think of Teenage, how our stories make a difference in your life, and where we can improve. Here’s how!

Hi Teenage,

Dear Teenage,

The moment Teenage updated its profile picture on Instagram, I knew that the November issue is out. Even better, the cover is Taylor Swift! As a Swiftie, I immediately rushed to the nearby convenience store to purchase a copy – the cover picture really does have a magnetising effect that lures in readers. And with the recent hooha about Taylor, I couldn’t wait to read what Teenage had to say about her.

I’ve only started buying Teenage recently. The first one I bought was the October 2017 issue as I’m a really big fan of Taylor Swift and I heard it included a poster of Taylor Swift thus I was begging my parents to help me purchase a copy.

I would like to give a thumbs-up to the Off The Charts column which gave recommendations on music for graduation and I thought they were perfect picks. Packed in the issue are also good

reads and movies under the Radar section. With the holidays around the corner, you can be sure I’ll get my hands (or eyes) on those recommendations. Can’t wait! Cheers to Teenage for always ensuring high-quality content which never fails to delight me. Looking forward to more creative and personalised issues in the future! Cheers, Samuel

This month’s ‘Letter of the Month’ wins 4 BRIXTON caps worth $196!

Thanks for the support, Samuel! Your letter has been chosen as the ‘Letter of the Month’!

6

Taylor is also featured on the cover of this month’s edition so I couldn’t help but to get a copy of the November issue too! I really enjoy the content because there are a lot of interesting topics that are suitable for teenagers like myself. I like reading up on the current trends and finding out new places to visit. I’m not a person who always puts on makeup, but the Beauty section has since improved my beauty knowledge and gave me a good idea of what products I should purchase. I also find the Textbook section really meaningful as it never fails to inspire me. I would like to thank Teenage magazine for making every issue so interesting and meaningful for the readers. I will continue to read and support Teenage! Love, Hailey

BATIKROLLS www.batikrolls.com

Rainbow cakes were all the rage once upon a time, but here’s the latest colourful confectionary fad to get you into a tizzy. Local-based online bakery Batikrolls launched their creative spin on Swiss rolls earlier this year, which has swiftly caught attention on social media feeds. With a choice of cream filling from vanilla to nutella, these handcrafted sponge cakes (from $26) come adorned with meticulously-drawn floral patterns and abstract motifs, wrapped in an equally attractive pull-out box. While they look almost too good to eat, these artistic creations certainly make for great additions to that mandatory #Flatlay!

AH MAH HOMEMADE CAKES

VivoCity #B2-K7, Singapore 0985851

Don’t let these unassuming batches of sponge Castella cake fool you: their ability to draw a sizable crowd is proof of its widespread appeal. The trend started in Taiwan, before this Malaysian-based bakery wisely brought the craze over for the local crowd. What’s special about the Ah Mah brand is undeniably the Cheese version ($11) that entices with Parmesan crunch and melted cheese threatening to spill out of its jiggly frame – and hungry visitors get to view its baking process from start to finish right at the store. It’s no wonder that they’ve already opened a multitude of outlets islandwide, with more to come!

OMOTESANDO KOFFEE

Downtown Gallery #04-01, Singapore 068815

Love it or hate it, you can’t deny the seasonal appeal of our famed national fruit. For durian fanatics however, you can now get your thorny fix all year round at the newly-opened Mao Shan Wang Cafe. The brainchild of Four Seasons Durian, the firstof-its-kind concept store dishes up plates of durianeverything – from ice cream puffs ($15.80 for six pieces) to french fries served with durian dipping sauce ($3.80). Oh, don’t forget to also pick up some packed D24 goodness for your finger-licking consumption at home too!

Famed Japanese coffee brand Omotesando Koffee has finally arrived in Singapore to much fanfare, and for good reason. While the Downtown Gallery joint specialises in artisanal brews that would satisfy even the most serious caffeine aficionados, casual coffee drinkers will also enjoy sipping on their signature Iced Cappuccino ($7.50), an airy mocha concoction that fluffs up with large milk bubbles – photo ops, anyone? The lack of seats might not appeal to those looking to linger over a cuppa, but it’s the perfect setting to strike up a conversation with the friendly baristas who would be more than happy to share their knowledge with you.

13

No stranger to the ramen scene in Singapore, Keisuke has done it yet again with its latest dining concept. A stone’s throw away from Tanjong Pagar MRT station, the Japanese food chain outlet is a haven for sizzling plates of cheese-oozing hamburger patties. You know it’s good because they only serve up two menu varieties – Plain ($18.80) or Triple Cheese ($20.80) – but they more than make up for the lack of options with flavour, complete with a free-flow salad buffet spread and eggs done the way you like it. The restaurant doesn’t take reservations, so be sure to head down early to secure a table!

Dance Dance Revolution A Grande Gesture

We can’t go a year without a staple viral dance, can we? To rival the Harlem Shakes and Mannequin Challenges of yesteryears, 2017 saw the #KoKoBopChallenge go viral – where many attempted a mid-air dance move based on EXO’s original choreography for ‘Ko Ko Bop’. Initiated by an 18-year-old

K-pop fan, she never expected that her video would catch on like wildfire, which even resulted in EXO’s very own Sehun taking a stab at the challenge! While the craze has since slowly subsided after its initial buzz, we still can’t help but to get our Ko Ko Bop dancing shoes on every once in a while...

Creating Cash-Phrases

Anyone can be famous these days – just ask 14-year-old Danielle Bregoli, otherwise known as the ‘Cash me ousside, how bow dah’ girl. For the uninitiated, the young troublemaker was first seen on talk show Dr. Phil coining her now-signature catchphrase as she challenged the host and the audience to an argument. It immediately went viral, resulting

in hilarious remix videos and memes circulating on social media. Since then, the controversial personality has risen to fame thanks to the bewildering launch of a rap career as Bhad Bahbie with debut single ‘These Heaux’. The result? She’s now the youngest female to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, which serves as a stark reminder of the world we live in.

46

The world was startled by the devastations of terrorism during Ariana Grande’s stop for her Dangerous Woman tour in Manchester earlier this year, but the aftermath was nothing but an overwhelming outpour of support. Led by Ariana herself, she put on a star-studded charity benefit concert featuring Coldplay, Miley Cyrus and more, eventually raising $13 million to help the victims. In other Ari news, she continued her tour trek around the world which included a spectacular performance at this year’s Singapore Grand Prix. While she broadcasted herself belting out Disney tunes at Gardens by the Bay prior to her show, it’s still a mystery how nobody snuck a selfie with the pop star in Singapore...

2017 was a good year for music – epic comebacks, album drops and promising newcomers to watch out for. To honour our favourite music acts, here are all the nominees for our inaugural Teenage Music Awards.

We want you to have a say in who will be taking home the crown! Show your support by voting for your faves at bit.ly/TMA2017 now!

The Breakout

FROM KARD TO KHALID, THESE ARE THE BRIGHTEST STARS OF TOMORROW TO WATCH OUT FOR IN 2018. BY BRYAN YEONG

Khalid

STAR POWER

WHY HE’S ONE TO WATCH: You’ve probably already caught yourself singing along to ‘Young Dumb and Broke’ and ‘Location’ casually playing on the radio, and yet have not been able to place a face behind the voice. Well, expect that to change soon. Born and raised in Texas, the all-American crooner blends personal anecdotes with infectiously laid-back beats on his debut record American Teen, which has proven to be his go-to formula of success. The 19-year-old has since bagged Best New Artist at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, and you can definitely look forward to more of the burgeoning talent in the near future. WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2018: Having participated in surefire collaborations with everyone from Lorde to Calvin Harris, it’s safe to say we’ll be anticipating new music to accompany further award wins and even his own solo world tour.

KARD

STAR POWER

WHY THEY’RE ONE TO WATCH: With a sore absence of co-ed groups in the K-pop landscape, rising quartet KARD has the perfect void to fill. Comprising of J.seph, B.M, Somin and Jiwoo, the dynamic four-piece has raked up over a million subscribers on their YouTube channel, and also dropped their debut EP Hola Hola to much fan fervor. Not bad at all for a rookie act – and they’re just getting started. WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2018: The quartet recently released their second mini album You & Me, which they’ll likely tour for in 2018. Forbes even listed KARD as the likeliest band – after BTS’ current Hollywood invasion – that’s headed for global domination and we couldn’t agree more.

60

Henry Golding

Finn Wolfhard

STAR POWER

STAR POWER

WHY HE’S ONE TO WATCH:

SG represent: the local-based Malaysian actor is making a name for himself in Hollywood! Already a proficient host for variety television shows, Henry Golding’s on-screen resume is set to expand with a lead role in the hotly-anticipated film adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians, set to hit cinemas in August 2018. His role win wasn’t all met with positivity though, with some criticising the PanAsian choice. But Henry hit back in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “I’ve lived in Singapore for six years,

so you think I’m less suitable than a Godfrey Gao or a Leehom Wang? I was chosen because I came as close to the character as possible.” Well, we think he’s perfect for it. WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2018:

Don’t expect his Hollywood stint to be a one-hit wonder – Henry has also notched a starring role alongside Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick in the upcoming thriller A Simple Favor, which holds promise to match up to the success of the widely acclaimed Gone Girl.

WHY SHE’S ONE TO WATCH:

The haunting yet inescapable ‘Issues’ turned out to be one of this year’s defining hits for singer-songwriter Julia Michaels, which is merely an indication of what she’s yet to achieve. The rising songstress most recently joined forces with Maroon 5 and Clean Bandit for explosive joint singles that will surely catapult her to become one of 2018’s most recognisable faces. WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2018:

Julia Michaels

STAR POWER

Besides opening for Niall Horan and Maroon 5’s 2018 tour dates, a fulllength album and more penmanship for fellow artistes’ smash singles most likely won’t be out of the question.

61

WHY HE’S ONE TO WATCH:

Move over, Millie Bobby Brown. This 14-year-old actor from Stranger Things and It is fast becoming the next big child star. He has already nabbed a nomination for Choice Breakout TV Star at this year’s Teen Choice Awards, and that speaks for itself. WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2018: Finn will next star in the feature film Dog Days alongside Nina Dobrev, playing an altruistic pizza delivery boy. Elsewhere, fans can expect him to reprise his beloved role as Mike in the third season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, where more adventure awaits.

Your kindhearted nature is reflected in the little things you do – whether it’s paying a visit to the children’s hospital or donating the old clothes you don’t wear for the less-privileged kids in your neighbourhood. To make Christmas even more meaningful, you would rather give back to society so everyone around you can feel the same joy and warmth. Niomi would be proud!

You love a white Christmas like everyone else, but you would much prefer a day of fun in the sun. A seeker for adventure just like Claire, chances are you might find yourself heading on a spontaneous trip to the beach. LIFE IN

N O I T O M

I need Energy! As I hardly have time for a full breakfast before my morning classes, I’d grab a snack from the vending machine to fuel me up for the day ahead!

Sword sparring and channelling supernatural forces are all in a day’s work for Singapore Polytechnic student Raihanah Binte Ruslan.

When you’re Raihanah Binte Ruslan, there’s never a dull moment on campus! Follow the budding artist as she takes us through a typical day in her life as a second-year Diploma in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics (DVEMG) student.

9.00 AM I’m currently in the midst of a motion capture module! Even though the classes are three hours long, it feels so much shorter than that. I am always on my feet as I have to calibrate my movements to animate my character on the computer. On top of that, I have to carefully follow the storyboard planned out, and ensure that the live footage and animated elements are in order.

My favourite time of the day: lunchtime! Here I am at the Muslim stall at Food Court 6, where I’ll usually order a plate of white rice, spicy chicken and sunny sideup doused in curry gravy with sambal. I might have to queue for more than 20 minutes sometimes because the food is so good, but it’s totally worth it!

Work like

a Boss!

1.00 PM Welcome to my personal cosy corner at the M.A.D. Studio, which is a shared workstation amongst the DVEMG students. This is where I try to finish up my assignments so that I don’t have to bring them home, but it’s not all work and no play. During breaks, you can easily catch my fellow classmates and I playing a ball game or sparring with one another while wielding our trusty sword prop!

4.30 PM Just a short walk from the M.A.D. Studio is my go-to spot for group meetings. We usually gather at the tables right outside the Social Hub after classes and our sessions are always very productive. There are also plenty of F&B stalls around so I can grab a bite if I’m feeling peckish.

5.30 PM The day is not yet over! Before it gets dark, I learn how to pilot a drone. While honing my aerial skills, I’m also collecting footage for my Video and Audio Fundamentals project which requires us to shoot our own film. I’m working hard for a scene in my supernatural film where the protagonist runs and takes off into the air!

Teenage Moments

It seems like yesterday that these talented dance crews were battling it out for a coveted spot in the Teenage Dance Challenge (TDC) 2017 Finals, but it’s down to 18 teams to battle it out for the top honours. Arriving bright and early for the rehearsals at NEX B2 Event Plaza, the finalists were hard at work perfecting their routines for the final showdown. Armed with killer moves and elaborate costumes, each team was all set to dominate. Are you ready?

Nothing is holding you back this month! Don’t be afraid to take risks and pursue what your heart truly desires. As you slowly overcome your fears and insecurities, you may find yourself developing a greater sense of confidence that will lead you to bigger achievements ahead. Go forth and conquer, Sag!

Have you been neglecting your loved ones lately? You may notice they’re keeping their distance, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want your company. A relationship takes two hands to clap, so make the effort to initiate the first move this time around. Surprise your BFF with their favourite treat or make mum a cup of tea in the morning – all it takes is a small gesture to make them feel appreciated.

Cupid is around the corner this November, fellow Aquarians! For the singletons, sparks will fly when you least expect it so go ahead and shake up your routine – even if it’s simply taking the long route home or crashing the party of your neighbour. Spoiler alert: you might be meeting your new sweetheart sooner than you think!

19 FEB – 20 MAR

Just because it’s the holiday season doesn’t mean you have any time to rest on your laurels. You’re at the peak of your game and all eyes will be on your every action. While you’re out there hitting targets, the air around you will be charged with negativity. Avoid getting entangled in drama and stay focused on your goals – you’re going to come out of this unscathed.

21 MAR – 19 APR

You’ve always been a go-getter, but your emotions have been getting the better of you the past few months. While you might be having a hard time coping with your feelings, don’t forget you have the support of your inner circle to count on so don’t hesitate to open up about your struggles. Press on, Arian!

LEO

Your hectic lifestyle has been taking a toll on your health lately, but it’s not too late to put it back on track. A healthy physique is more than just mere numbers on a weighing scale – indulge in a good read, treat yourself to a delicious meal, or go on a spontaneous getaway. It’s time to give your mind, body and soul some tender loving!

As the year comes to a close, you may find yourself in need of a spiritual spring cleaning. The unresolved conflict with a close pal can no longer be avoided; find time to iron out the misunderstanding and you’ll realise it isn’t that much big of a deal after all. On, and that toxic friend in the group? Consider cutting the ties and giving each other proper closure before things get out of hand.

After a bumpy past couple of months, you’re feeling stretched out and understandably a little cynical. But don’t get too dejected just yet, as this month will be peppered with loads of pleasant surprises and kind gestures coming your way. The down moments are finally over, and it’s your turn now to enjoy life’s goodness.

Take a chill pill, Leo! Although your competitive spirit has been the biggest driving factor behind your success, don’t let that become all-consuming to the point where it burns you out. In fact, your consistent efforts have already been recognised and you’ve earned the right to reward yourself. Let loose and have some fun, you deserve it!

Dwelling over the uncertainty of your future has left you feeling down in the dumps, but this month will present a whole slew of opportunities for personal growth. Take the time to ponder over your New Year resolutions and goals for the year ahead. With diligent effort and a little help from the lucky gods, all you set out to achieve will eventually come to be.

Yikes, over-indulging on the festive shopping and feasting seems to have caused a dent in your bank account. Living on a tight budget this holiday season will be a painful lesson for your spendthrift ways, but thankfully you’ll be able to pull through with a few part-time gigs and monetary gifts from loved ones. Don’t expect the same luck in the future though, and start saving up now!

Being the resident straight shooter of the clique doesn’t give you the right to be spiteful, does it? You might mean no harm, but your words might’ve unintentionally hurt someone you deeply care about. Before flipping out, learn to tame your impulse and filter out your thoughts – you’ll be just fine!
