HERE’S TO NEW BEGINNINGS... Hi guys, This month’s letter is hard to write, because I’m sad to say that it’ll be my last with Teenage. It has been a wonderful two and a half years with all of you wonderful supporters, and I’ve had such a fun ride with the crazy talented team. I’m going to miss everyone. To our readers and my work family, thank you so much for the love. I’ll still be in this line, so if you spot me, say “hi”. Meanwhile, I’ll be leaving this iconic mag in the good hands of Arissa. We met through friends years ago and being the cool chick that she is, I’m sure she has plenty of amazing stuff planned for this mag! I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Teenage’s future. Thank you for your continued support and do look forward to more exciting times ahead! Love,

Hi everyone,

Thank you, Yi Ying, for the wonderful journey with Teenage

Like some of you, I picked up my first copy of Teenage when I was 13 and never thought I’d be working for the magazine one day. To start off my introduction, here are some fun facts about me: I only dress in black (sometimes white too), own too much make-up and never turn down ice-cream. It was a pleasure being Yi Ying’s colleague, even if it was just for a few weeks, and she has done such a fantastic job with Teenage over the last two and a half years. It’s always sad to say ‘goodbye’, but I hope you will join me on my journey to make Teenage even better in 2015! Love,

Ever since my best friend introduced me to Teenage, I have been completely hooked. Not only is it extremely helpful and informative with its beauty and fashion stories (I’m not allowed to wear makeup yet, when I’m older, I will be prepared!), but my friends and I like reading the celeb stories. We usually read the stories during our breaks and it’s really great for taking our minds off our stressful studies. I hope that one day I’ll be able to go on a staycation with my friends too! Thank you Teenage for all the inspiration! Love, Maryssa Lim

I’m a completely new reader and I picke d up your magazine at the Teenage K-pop dance event last month, because my friends kept bugging me to grab the free good ie bags for them… To my surprise, I really enjoyed reading it! Even though I’m not a fan of K-pop, I got to ‘experience’ what it’d be like attending an EXO concert and squealed (a little) when I saw the Madden Brothers article. I love Good Charlotte! Anyway, I will continue to read Teenage from now on. Keep up the good work! Your new reader, Samantha Tan

GOOD DAY GONE BAD

Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day sees typical routines turning into madcap fiascos, but that’s not all. Chew Hui Ling breaks down why this movie should be on your watch list.

Bella Thorne. We think her name is a strong enough reason. Our resident girl crush plays Celia, the egocentric girlfriend (aka high school diva) of Alexander’s older brother. In the trailer, we see Celia hanging up on him after he accidentally blurts out an obnoxious remark over the phone, which is actually meant for Alexander. Yikes! The Disney starlet is said to have channelled Rose McGowan’s sassy attitude from Jawbreaker for the role, so we’re totes stoked about her performance!

46 DEC 2014

It’s hilarious, yet refreshingly heartwarming. Aside from a blockbuster cast and lots of goofy slapstick, much of the movie’s charm is the family-centric theme amidst the chaos. At the end of the day, the Coopers realise that they can pull through anything as long as they stick together. Because as Alexander so wisely puts it: “You got to have the bad days so you can love the good days even more!”

PHOTOS: WALT DISNEY PICTURES

Your day might not be so bad after all. What are the odds of you burning down the science lab, chasing a runaway kangaroo, or coming home to an alligator in your swimming pool? It may be borderline ridiculous, but such eye-popping moments make it all the more entertaining to watch. Besides, the scenarios are done in a light-hearted fashion so you need not feel awful about laughing it off.

I’m here!

MY BRILLIANT YEAR Sara Bareilles recently dropped by for her Little Black Dress tour, and Teenage took the opportunity to uncover the top moments of 2014 that she holds dear! What’s been the most memorable part of the year for you? The Album of the Year Grammy nomination was a real highlight. Not only because it felt like such a nice acknowledgement for this album that I poured my heart and soul into, but I also got to perform with Carole King, who is a hero of mine.

Do you think there’s anything next year that can top this year? [A] vacation! I’m also working on other projects now – a musical and a book. So I think watching those other projects come into completion is going to be very rewarding in a totally different way.

Could you tell us about any memorable fan experiences? I noticed that fans in Singapore love to give me candy, which is really great because I love that. In Tokyo, somebody made me a little ring of flash cards with Japanese phrases so I could talk to the audience a little bit and it was really sweet. I also love that my fans connect to the intention and meaning behind the songs, not just because it’s the cool thing to do. It means a lot to me.

TEXT: LYN CHUA AND JOHANNA TEO

PHOTO: SONY MUSIC

Which song means the most to you emotionally? It’s hard to choose, but there are two songs that feel like cornerstones for me on the record. ‘Brave’ is about so many things, about my former relationship, a friend struggling to come out as an adult. It was all very impactful and intimate for me. The other song is ‘Manhattan’, which is incredibly important for a different reason. It is a really intimate and literal interpretation of my life and my relationship coming to an end.

What is an underrated song of yours that you have a strong affinity with? ‘December’ was one of the last songs I wrote in Los Angeles before I left. I lived there for 14 years [and] was excited for the opportunity to be in a new city, but I was leaving something that I loved. It was really hard to go. Songs don’t go on the record unless I really mean them, and this means a lot to me. DEC 2014

BEST BIRTHDAY

BASH EVER! ION Orchard recently celebrated its fifth anniversary, and Johanna Teo popped by to mingle with Elva Hsiao and Chris Daughtry who came down specially for the event!

Childhood Talents The celebs were invited to paint the finishing touches onto a piece done by the Singapore Association for Mental Health. It was to be sold at a closed-door charity gala later that evening. Chris took to the task sans Elva (more on that later) and displayed the finesse of a professional. Divulging that he had been “drawing and painting since he was five”, the rocker stunned us when he adorned

50 DEC 2014

the picturesque town scene with… a Bat Signal. We kid you not. Apparently, Batman is his favourite superhero. We weren’t sure we liked it at first, but the cheeky addition definitely grew on us!

None For You This being Chris’ fourth trip to Singapore, the self-confessed shopaholic expressed his delight at finally being able to explore our sunny island, starting with dinner at Dempsey. Chris laughed as he shared that buying extra suitcases for additional purchases used to be a necessity. But not this time! Apparently, his family “doesn’t appreciate it,” so he doesn’t give them that option anymore. More space for his splurges then!

Fashionably Late - Not! After Chris ended his segment (which was meant to be done with Elva), we were left

with waiting, and more waiting, for the very late diva. Awkward buzzing filled the air as the media restlessly anticipated her arrival. Upon probing, the contrite songbird explained that her makeup and wardrobe staff had their flights delayed, which led to her being late… Sigh, the problems of a star. #Pleasebemoreunderstanding

Love In The Air? The hot topic on everyone’s lips was Elva’s budding romance with Singaporean heir Elroy Cheo (Vanness Wu’s brother-in-law). The couple was spotted out and about town (even at Newton Food Centre), but when asked about a possible marriage, Elva remained coy. “When I look at the work I have, especially with Carry Me [my fashion label] that is still in its infancy, I plunge back to reality and all thoughts of settling down disappear.” She then laughed and changed the subject like the smart lady she is.

W

hat happens when one of the most prestigious malls in Singapore turns five? Duh, party in style of course! ION Orchard threw a star-studded birthday bash, featuring two super hot acts – Elva Hsiao and Chris Daughtry – and it was phenomenal. We met up with the two headliners at the press conference for this shindig and caught these four most interesting details that went down.

ONLY ON K-TV My Lovely Girl is the hottest K-drama of the month, but it’s on our must-watch list for very different reasons. Johanna Teo and Desirae Tan explain.

D

on’t get us wrong – My Lovely Girl has the right touches of romance, sweet agony and is extremely ‘feel’inducing, especially with Rain and Krystal (f(x)) leading the show. However, there’s just something not quite believable about the plot, no matter how beautifully painted it is. These four reasons painfully remind us why it’s only a K-drama and will probably never happen in real life. No matter how much we want Rain to fall in love with us.

PHOTOS: ONE

Majorly Traumatic Scene A lead character usually goes through something horrible which leaves emotional scars. In this case, the show sacrifices So Eun, Hyun Wook’s (Rain) girlfriend. In short, she dies in his arms after a truck flips onto their parked vehicle (with her in it), which he fortunately exited moments before. What’s worse is that they were in the midst of a quarrel – which was why he pulled over and left the car to calm down. Score one for setting up a cold, emotionless character who will be melted by a true love interest afterwards.

Miraculous Coincidences From Hyun Wook picking up a call on So Eun’s phone from her sister Se Na (Krystal), to Se Na getting a job at the hotel where Hyun Wook was staying, fate definitely destined for them to meet. What are the odds? More than us striking the lottery, that’s for sure!

Forbidden Love We all know that Hyun Wook and Se Na falls for each other, but that’s never happening in real life. Falling in love with your dead girlfriend’s younger sister? We’ll excuse Se Na for not knowing the truth, but Hyun Wook was aware the whole time! Can’t decide if it’s more romantic or icky…

Set For Life It’s amazing how financial woes seem to magically disappear in K-dramas. For example, Se Na started out with tremendous debt, but as a wealthy composer/stand-in CEO of an entertainment company, all it took was for Hyun Wook to step in to save the day. Granted, he didn’t just hand her the money – he simply overpaid her for a dogsitting job, and gave Se Na the chance to live her dreams as a music producer. We need a Hyun Wook in our lives too!

My Lovely Girl airs every Wednesday and Thursday, 8.55pm on ONE DEC 2014

WHAT A YEAR!

2014 has been interesting to say the least – scandals, hackings, public showdowns and what feels like the start of K-pop falling apart (oh no!). Johanna Teo and Lyn Chua break down the hot topics that got everyone buzzing.

THEY DID W h a t ?!

We all know that being a celeb is hard work, but these stars can never catch a break. With disbandments, lawsuits and straight-up brawling, looks like life isn’t rosier on the other side.

Photo Frenzy What happened: The Internet exploded when

The K-popcalypse What happened: We thought S.M. Entertainment learnt their lesson back in 2009/2010 when both JYJ (Ex-DBSK) and Han Geng (Super Junior) sued them over contract issues, but apparently not! This year saw both Kris and Luhan (EXO) following their seniors’ paths and suing the label, while Jessica got unceremoniously booted out of SNSD. Sulli (f(x)) went on a hiatus following her dating scandal as well. Other groups from competing companies didn’t fare any better – MBLAQ disbanded and Lee Hoo (ZE:A) went on a tweeting rampage accusing his company (Star Empire Entertainment) of unfair distribution of payment. Sigh.

Conclusion: We know this industry isn’t a walk in the park, but what we know is only a smidge of what really goes on. Brace yourselves – we have a feeling that we haven’t seen the end of the scandals – 2015 will bring even more revelations!

a long list of female celebs including Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and Rihanna had their intimate photos hacked and uploaded for the world to see. Following this massive breach of privacy, Google was threatened with a $100M lawsuit – to trash photos off all sites and search engines or else – while Jennifer released a strong and unapologetic response on Vanity Fair. Denouncing it as a sex crime, she said, “It is a sexual violation… I didn’t tell you that you could look at my naked body.”

Conclusion: We fully agree with J.Law, but while it’s their prerogative to take whatever photos they want, prevention is definitely better than cure, don’t you think?

Hoedown Showdown What happened: Justin Bieber and Orlando Bloom’s hormone-fuelled scuffle over Miranda Kerr was inevitable. But what amazed us was how celebs like Leonardo DiCaprio and Lindsay Lohan (who were supposedly present) reportedly laughed and applauded when Orlando channelled his inner Legolas, jumped over a sofa and tried to punch the Biebs, who was provoking him.

Conclusion: Violence is never the answer kids – and we hope Bieber knows not to piss off Legolas now!

#HeForShe What Happened: Adding on to the hacker debacle, Emma Watson addressed the UN and launched the ‘HeForShe’ campaign with an impassioned speech on gender equality. It immediately went viral, after which, the actress was threatened by hackers who set up a website counting down to their leak of her nude photos. It turned out to be a hoax by a PR company trying to generate website traffic.

Conclusion: First off, that was a lousy move by the company and they should be ashamed. Second, hoax or no hoax, we admire Emma’s strength and drive towards this cause. We hope that the masses have been enlightened to what feminism truly means, and not associate it with man-bashing and negativity. #AllLadiesTeamAtTeenage

You’re hosting a party and everything is going smoothly until you spot a solitary figure at a corner. It seems like your guest is too shy to mingle.

What should you do? A gracious host makes sure that no one feels left out at their party. If you see someone alone, grab two drinks, serve one to them and have a short chat with them. Take the chance to introduce this person to a small group of three to four people, preferably those with similar interests so your lonely buddy will fit right in. Dear readers, Happy Holidays, Seasons Greetings and a prosperous and successful 2015 to all. With your parents’ permission, do organise picnics in the various parks around Singapore. Take your musical instruments along and have a great sing-along. A picnic lunch is always delightful. You must not miss Christmas Wonderland @ Gardens by the Bay from 29 November 2014 to 1 January 2015. It would be like travelling all over Europe to see how people celebrate Christmas. From the beautifully illuminated gazebo to the international items on sale, you will experience a feast for the senses. Do go with friends, family or that special someone. Capture the memories in photos that you can share or even make into postcards or greeting cards. Of course, the Christmas season is never complete without a stroll down Orchard Road to soak up the festive atmosphere. Select your favourite Christmas tree and have a competition with those enjoying the walkabout. Be the judge. Select the building that will win the yearly Best Decorated Award. Hop onto the top deck of a double-decker bus at Tangs and hop off at Plaza Singapura. You will get a view of the lights from above – an awesome experience!

It’s Party Time Oh yes it is! The joy of getting all dressed up and enjoying the company of friends is always an anticipated event. Do enjoy yourself, but you must make sure you look after yourself.

Some party warnings No underage drinking – if you are under 18 years old, please don’t accept drinks at parties. You may lose control or be unaware of what is happening when you are under the influence of alcohol. Even if you are 18, be cautious – one alcoholic drink is all you should accept. Well, it’s better to drink at family functions with permission. Many girls have written to me stating that they had their first sexual experience after drinking at a festive

party. A few admitted to getting pregnant and not knowing whom they had intercourse with. I don’t want this to happen to any reader. If a friend gets drunk, make sure she is sent home immediately. Don’t expose her to danger because when you are drunk, you have no control over your faculties. Not only girls are at risk when drunk. I have had letters from young guys who were approached by another guy suggesting “same-sex hankypanky”. No one is safe from sexual predators. It pays to always be on your guard. Important choices – a good precaution is to never to go a party with someone you do not know well. Double date if you wish to go out with a new guy friend. Girls should watch out for each other. Please do not accept a lift from a stranger after a party. You have no control over the situation – like if the guy goes to a secluded spot and takes advantage of you. Going home with friends is always safer. Say no to drugs – if you know drugs are being offered, immediately go home. You might be slipped a drug, then you can be taken advantage of. Gang rapes have occurred. Letters attesting to such “happenings” have been sent to me, and girls have reported getting dumped at a public location like a park. getting pregnant and/or a Sexually Transmitted Disease. Say no to cigarettes – many teenagers tell me that they had their first puff at year-end parties. Please say no to smoking. Smoking is not cool. Smoking is for fools. Smoking is a health hazard. Keep away from cigarettes. Once you know the rules and keep to them, having a wonderful time at parties is my wish for you. Always here for you.

A personality change Hi, I don’t know how to start this letter so I might as well just tell you my problem. I’m scared to talk to anyone. When someone talks to me, I just stare at them and smile. When I’m in class, I do my work, or work alone or with my partner when I have to, but I usually keep quiet. I hate everyone in class. I don’t know why. When they are noisy, I feel like running away and being by myself.

Recently, a close friend said I have changed. She said that I keep away from people and have become anti-social. I have started missing school. I’d rather study alone than be surrounded by people. Like many teenagers, I am insecure. I feel that people are judging me. I feel that they hate me. I sometimes go out wearing a cap in order to cover my face. I have gone on a healthy diet because all I see are flaws in the mirror. I am glad someone is there for me – SHINee, the Korean pop boy band. Even though they are not here physically, I believe they are here mentally. Their songs make me happy. Sometimes I cry at the lyrics of their songs that relate to my problems. Kelly, I hope you understand my situation. I have visited the school counsellor but got little help. From: Withdrawn Kelly: I advise you to visit a doctor and if it is too painful to verbally express your thoughts, presenting this column might be less stressful. Yes, your friend is correct, you have changed and you need to find out why. The doctor might recommend medication. Make sure you take it as instructed. If the doctor refers you to a counsellor, meet this person with an open mind. Sometimes if we hold back, the professional can’t really help because not everything is

114 DEC 2014

mentioned. To get results, commit to being honest and straightforward. Something must have happened to trigger this change in behaviour. The counsellor assigned to you will help you get to the bottom of the problem if you are open and forthcoming. You must help the counsellor help you. Counsellors don’t judge people – that is not their job. They advise based on the information given.

I want you to understand no one is judging you, you are choosing to see “flaws” when you look in the mirror. Another thing, no need for the cap, no need to hide. Most people are wrapped up with their lives so they have no time to worry about others. I don’t believe your classmates warrant your hatred. Hating everyone isn’t good because hate is a negative emotion that eats into the hater.

Skipping school is not an option. It is necessary to attend class and listen to the teacher. You could ask for the desk right in front of the class so you will be less distracted and won’t have to look at your classmates. If the boy band brings you comfort, listen to the music but be realistic, they can’t relate to you. You need help so you can relate to the people in school and at home. I am glad you wrote to me, at least you let me into your life. It tells me you are ready to open up. This is good. I wish you well.

I don’t know why. When they are noisy, I feel like running away and being by myself.

Friendship

in trouble I have fallen out with one of my closest friends because she lied to me and didn’t defend me. It was a trivial incident leading up to the lie. She refuses to play video games with me, giving excuses like, “I want to play alone”, or “I

have no money to buy video games”. Eventually, I discovered she was playing video games with her online friends. I discovered she didn’t come to my defence when one of her online friends hurled verbal abuse at me. Instead, she found it funny. I lost my temper and insulted my friend. I was pretty vicious and am not proud of myself. But I was angry and still am. Although I regard her as one of my closest friends, she doesn’t seem to regard me in the same way, despite claiming I am a special friend. For one thing, she is always making excuses to put off meeting me. She expects me to re-schedule my appointments to accommodate her.

She only talks to me when she is bored, and when we are together, she spends the time texting others. She never apologises, never takes the initiative and seems to find everything hilarious. When I try to bring up issues like those I mention in this letter, she ignores or just laughs at me. It’s frustrating.
