2. Foundation and Support for Concrete Stairs Connect reinforcement steel bars to plinth beam at the beginning of stairs or small concrete foundation to transfer the load. Support is constructed on the roof beam or slab. 3. Building the Form-work for concrete stairs Proper formwork including the angle of flight (30°), dimensions of tread (270mm) and riser (150mm) are checked. Line of flight, tread and risers are marked on the wall when stairs are constructed to be attached to the wall. This is meant for accurate fixing of formwork.

4. Steel Reinforcement for Concrete Stairs

In order for the staircase to carry huge loads, reinforcement steel bars are placed with minimum of 25 mm spacing and is tied together


5. Pouring of Concrete for Stairs Standard mix of concrete for stairs are cement, sand, gravel in the ratio of 3:2:4 with water. Usage of concrete vibrator is recommended to avoid honeycomb formation.

6. Removal of Formwork Formwork is removed after 21 days for the stairs to completely dry out. In the drying period, proper curing is done to prevent cracks due to the thermal expansion.

7. Finishing of Concrete Stairs 126mm (L) X 126mm (W) X 7.9mm (THK.) Parquet wood are used as the applied by gluing small finger-joined of wood on 0.3mm DPM layer on the concrete base. Varnish is used as their finishes.


Materials & Finishes Parquet Engineered Wood Flooring in Varnish Finish using glue-down method Glue down 1. Glue-down method is obviously using a layer o adhesive, which is known as mastic onto the subfloor using a trowel similar to mortar that is used in laying ceramic tile 2. The wood strips are then arranged and laid on top of the glue and hammered into place using a rubber mallet 3. Due to the small size pieces, sanding and re-finishing is needed after the glue-down method and a 0.3 mm damp proof membrane (DPM) is needed to create a barrier between the concrete floor and the subfloor in order to prevent the moisture from seeping into the parquet flooring that causes damage to it.


Rules (UBBL) •

Headroom between stairs ceiling and base is 2360, which meets the requirement of at least 2m in height to allow enough headroom for users to ascend the stairs without their heads knocking into the ceiling as the standard user height is 1500mm- UBBL By Law 110 (2)

150mm rise is the minimum of the height to bring comfort when climbing the stairs and 270mm is the maximum width of tread so that users would have sufficient space to step on the tread and avoid accidentprone incidents.- UBBL By Law106 Flight of stairs is at the pitch of 30 degree as the optimal pitch angle should be between 30 degree and 45 degree to make sure users do not trip over low angle or difficult to climb the steep stairs when the angle is too broad

Handrails are at the height of 930mm which meets the minimum height of 900mm so users can hold onto the handrails with comfort for safety.– UBBL By Law 107

Fire Rating measures: Concrete does not burn as well as emitting toxic fumes, thus, they have high degree of fire resistance. Treated parquet engineered wood in varnish finishes prolong the fire resistance as fire retardant varnish for timber is fully tested and certified to BS476 Class 0 spread of flame on timber and BS476 Class 1 spread of flame on timber based products [MDF, Plywood]

REFLECTION Moreover, the most fascinating part of doing this assignment is to be able to know more about its detailed joinery on how metal are connected to the parquet timber staircase by using concrete base and screws. The metal plates were also welded to form a strong connection and I also found out how the finishes were applied by using the glue down method. In short, it was pretty inspiring to be able to observe and document my first as-built drawings.

ASSIGNMENT 1

The first asssignment, to learn about drawing conventions by documenting the stairs is a brand new experience for me. Despite having to stay at home due to the pandemic, it's fun to examine the staircase of my own stay that I've not taken notice of its detailings before. I've learnt to identity the construction method step by step and also the standard requirements of tread, rise, run and flight angle dimension that are in compliance to the UBBL.

1.2 Description of house type, kitchen and toilet

My site is a double storey terrace house located at Puchong Prima. The kitchen size is 13.14 metre square and has a L shape granite kitchen countertop and white laminated plywood cabinetry. Three toilets are located at the first floor master bedroom, bedroom 2 and beside the kitchen respectively with an area of 2.68 metre square individually.

White colour granite kitchen countertop is proposed because the bright colour helps to brighten up the kitchen and gives out a clean and minimalist feel, compared to black granite countertop that causes the overall kitchen to be dull. Furthermore, dust is apparently more obvious on black granite kitchen countertop due to the nature of the dust, which is white in colour, which leads to displease and dissatisfaction of the overall kitchen design. Granite is opted back because it is durable, scratch resistant and high resistance to heat which lowers the fire accident rate.

REFLECTION Compared to the toilet, I spent a lot of time figuring out the dimensions and joinery details as it invloves a lot of built-ins such as the kitchen countertop and cabinets. Many researches are needed to be done especially drawing out the detail blow ups. Besides the drawings, it's also crucial to document the finishes, appliances and building services as well so we know how the area functions, typically the water supply system. I'm also relieved that I'm able to identify the required UBBL that are involved while designing the kitchen.

ASSIGNMENT 2

The second assignment was a bit challenging as we need to work on a wider range of areas: kitchen and toilet. Having to draw out the plans, sections and elevations in different scales, even the documation format is tricky since we need to arrange the drawings as well as the specifications properly with standardised text size, leader size and etc. This assignment truly improves my skills in phrasing the specifications in detail and managing the appropriate line thicknesses through pen asssignments.

REFLECTION If I were to name the most challenging part, it would probably be the flexible stall design as it is the highlight item in my proposed market design. Since it's not as-built, I have to identify the suitable material and finishes as well, based on not just aesthethics, but also practicality. The joinery parts to connect different materials also required researches and thanks to the lecturers' guidances I was able to learn something new.

ASSIGNMENT 3

The final assignment taught me about the real drawings that are to be produced in the working world, such as Setting Out Plan, Floor Finishes Plan, Section and etc. Since the duration for us to complete all real drawings are insufficient, we are allowed to combine some of the drawings as to increase our understandings as well. Since the last assignment was based on our own studio project, they are drawn according to our own designs, unlike the previous as-built drawings.


List of names that need to be prepared for working drawings in reality Sets of drawings needed in reality include Addtition & Demolition Plan, Existing Structure Plan, Furniture Layout Plan, Hoarding layout Plan, Hoarding Visual, Electrical Plan, M&E Plan, Reflected Ceiling Plan, Ceiling Layout Plan, Fire Sprinkler Plan, Floor Finishes Plan, Wall Finishes Plan, A/C Ducting Plan, Elevation, Section, Furniture Detail and Plumbing Plan. Parties involved from the start till the completion and their roles in the project Parties invloved are Mitrajaya Sdn. Bhd. (Design consultant), In-Situ Group of Companies (Mechanical Engineering consultant) and E & H Plumbing Contractor (Plumbing consultant). 5 UBBL by-laws requirement related to the design proposal 1) Act 39. (1) Every room designed, adapted or used for residential, business or other purposes except hospitals and schools shall be provided with natural lighting and natural ventilation by means of one or more windows having a total area of not less than 10% of the clear floor area of such rom and shall have openings capable of allowing a free uninterrupted passage of air of not less than 5% of such floor area.


2) Act 39. (4) Every water-closet, latrine, urinal or bathroom shall be provided with natural lighting and natural ventilation by means of one or more openings having a total area if not less than 0.2 square metre per water-closet, urinal latrine or bathroom and such openings shall be capable of allowing a free uninterrupted passage of air. 3) Act 46. (4) The minimum headroom of any habitable room or space inside any building shall be 2 metres. 4) Act 103. (1) Where structural timber floors are permissible under these By-Laws they shall be designed of hardwood or of species of timber treated with a suitable wood preservative. 5) Act 106. (1) In any staircase, the rise of any staircase shall be not more than 180 millimetres and the tread shall be not less than 255 millimetres and the dimensions of the rise and the tread of the staircase so chosen shall be uniform and consistent throughout.


OVERALL REFLECTION

It's definitely a must to understand the UBBLs well as we play an essential role that the space we designing are safe and practical to use, not just merely created to please our eyes. Although the learning process was tough, I am relieved that this module is integrated with my studio module to assist me better in understanding the drawings manners and time management as well. Last but not least, I'd like to convey my appreciation towards Ms. Norji and Ms. Aziah who tried their very best in guiding us throughou this semester. Thank you.

ASSIGNMENT 1-3

Throughout these 3 assignments, I've learnt the importance of documenting the drawings in a proper and professional manner as if they are the real construciton drawings. It's crucial to apply the appropriate pen assignment and formatting while preparing the documents so that they can be comprehended well. Experiences on producing staircase, kitchen, toilet, marketplace related drawings are gained. Moreover, I'm able to understand more of its joinery, method of constructions and the materials and fininshes applied to construct an area/space in accordance to the UBBLs.
