I have Marmot and Patagonia rain jackets that are great for fall hiking but would probably be too light for winter hiking alone, but in winter I combine them with another insulating layer, usually a wool shirt and they work quite well in moderate winter weather. This is tricky to answer. This depends on where you hike in the winter. Also, most garments that are appropriate for work, are rarely ideal for hiking. I often recommend the Arc’teryx Beta AR and Alpha LT combo. It looks good, offers an excellent shell and is versatile for use all year round. But it's a might pricey. But such is the price of technical performance, and urban looks. Generally I recommend against 3-in1 jackets as they are heavy and more often then not have badly displaced pockets for hiking. Their priority is perceived value over functionality.
