Mass media and entertainment have confused what a Mormon is. This is one reason why we prefer to use the proper name of the Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Usually, a white shirt, tie, and slacks or suit pants for men and a modest dress for women. There is nothing against nice suit pants for women either if they want to avoid the dress. Sunday best clothing helps remind us of the importance, spirit, and reverence the day should convey. Most of us know that we will usually behave in a certain way when we’re dressed a certain way. Still, it is more important to be there than feel like you have to wear Sunday best.
For visitors just your best set of clothing. We do not judge what you are wearing. We just want you to be saved. For regulars it is different, especially for the men, a dress shirt is preferred but anything with a collar is preferable. The brother I am assigned to minister with I do not think he owns any white dress shirts, he usually wear collared polos. Which also acceptable as long as it is clean. For women modesty is the key . Dresses must cover the legs no mini skirts. Children if you have any just their Sunday best. If in doubt ask the missionaries serving your ward.
Most members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wear Sunday best. A modest skirt/dress for the women, shirt (usually white, but not always) and tie for the men. We had a couple (who became new members) and he wore jeans for the first few weeks. There have been police officers and security people (who had to work afterwards) show up in uniforms. My ward in the Greater Salt Lake Metro area shares a building with a Tongan ward, and many of the men show up in lavalavas and sandals. Dress code? There is no “dress code.” We, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, are encouraged to dress modestly. Modestly, because our Father in Heaven delights in modesty. A lack of modesty often leads to temptations that we are better off without, or tempts others to act in a fashion that can be detrimental to us.
