It’s personal taste. I never drive in a coat, it’s safer that way. So I wear what fits the weather at the time and then put it in the front seat beside me when I’m driving. When my husband is driving my coat is usually over my lap... A jacket will keep your core warm and give you more maneuverability but your rear end will be exposed which is only a problem in very cold and/or windy conditions. You can wear a jacket in -40 but it is not ideal for long periods outside. Maybe the best type of jacket to wear to work in winter depends on your work environment and personal preference. For formal work environments, a wool peacoat or blazer may be the best option. For more relaxed office settings, a lightweight down jacket, puffer coat, or fuzzy jacket may be appropriate. If you'll be doing a lot of outdoor activity, a waterproof or insulated jacket may be your best bet. Layering is always a good option. There are such huge numbers of sorts of winter jackets, everything relies on your solace. Jackets are unfathomably warm, comfortable and in vogue. You can never turn out badly with them particularly during winters. Here are the best winter jackets, you can wear this winter and look fab in them!!

I think it’s up to the person. I love my long coat and when I go outside and it’s windy and freezing I want to be covered. I usually have on two pairs of pants with long underwear on too.
When it’s around freezing and up to the mid-’40s a jacket is fine unless it’s very windy. If it’s calm then a jacket is fine. If it’s over 40 then a lot of people are in shorts and tee-shirts and flip flops. I swear I went to Walmart last week and I had on my long coat and there was a guy in front of me at the pharmacy in long board shorts and a tee-shirt and only had flip flops on.

4. TANBOER Lightweight Packable Down Jacket: Extremely lightweight and packable, with 800-fill down and a durable water-repellent finish. 5. Canada Goose: Combines down insulation with stretch panels for mobility, making it a great choice for active pursuits in cold weather. Depends on what you need it for but personally for a one-jacket-fits-all I would have to go with Carhartt. The basic one is only about$50 or maybe even $40 but I don’t like the itchy lining in it, I think it's wool. For about $100–120 the Artic Carhartt coat was probably the warmest coat I've ever had. The cuffs fit real tighy against your wrists so no draft or snow gets in. Carhartts are SUPER durable. My first one I wore for 4 years to work and I'm hard on clothes. My wife just threw hers away, she's had it for 15 years and it was still in ok shape but the zipper broke.
