MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER Dear Members,

EVENTS AT A GLANCE WINDSOR DOCS: UNLOCKING THE CAGE Beach Club Wednesday, January 18 at 5 PM

Happy New Year! Wishing good will and cheer to all as we commence the year 2017. The Club “brought in” the New Year with a “bang” at three Club locations— serving 46 per cent more Members and guests than in the previous year! After dinner, a rousing crowd joined us for the after party at the Clubhouse, where they enjoyed Champagne, cocktails, dancing and a spectacular fireworks display. As we enter the New Year, it is an appropriate opportunity to thank the dedicated Windsor staff in our kitchens and dining rooms, building maintenance, our great laundry and housekeeping team, as well as the officers manning the gatehouses, and all of our dedicated staff working on the golf course. Around the clock and every day, meals get served, gates are manned, buildings are repaired and cleaned, and our greens are mowed to Windsor standards. Not easy tasks, and at times these jobs are overlooked and under-appreciated. So, it’s important to say “thank you” and recognize our staff “behind the scenes,” without whom operating the Club during Christmas week (or any week during Season) would not be possible. There is a lot to look forward to as we begin the first quarter of the New Year and the Club’s most important months of our winter Season. The fourth season of our ever-popular Windsor Docs commenced, with select films being featured at the Beach Club during the month of January. Chef Vincent is artfully creating food themes to complement each film. A very kind “thank you” goes out to Ms. Barbara Ettinger, Mr. Sven Huseby, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stein for arranging these wonderful cultural cinematic events for us. Thanks to our marketing department, we have scheduled two unparalleled food and wine events this winter at the Beach Club: Le Cirque at Windsor on Thursday, January 26, and Savor Windsor on Saturday, February 18, showcasing exceptional Champagnes and wines from Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy. Back by popular demand, the Asado Grille will take place at the Equestrian Centre on Sunday, February 19, with equestrian demonstrations beginning at 4:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m.—dress code for the evening will be simply “stable chic.” The marquee event of the winter social season will be the opening of the Christopher Le Brun exhibit Composer, on Friday, February 24, at The Gallery at Windsor. Canapés and cocktails will be served at 6 p.m., followed by an informal walk-through of the exhibition. As you can see, we have a number of exciting events in store to start off the New Year in Windsor fashion. As always, thank you for your support, and cheers for the New Year!

CHEF’S CORNER: CLUBHOUSE MENUS

Chateau d’Yquem 2010

Members may have noticed a few changes to our offerings around Windsor, and I wanted to take this opportunity to discuss the idea behind our new Clubhouse menu. The left side of the menu includes many traditional Clubhouse favorites, like the Windsor wedge salad and chicken picatta as well as grill items, including prime ribeye steak and the fresh catch of the day. The right side of the menu changes much more frequently—every three to four days based on availability—with appetizers and entrées focusing on fresh, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. It is my hope that some of these items will eventually move to the left side as Members find new favorites. I am always open to feedback from Members and continue to strive to provide exciting meals highlighting the best and freshest ingredients possible. — Chef Vincent

Prepare Your Mind to Compete: Choose three “how to play the game” goals to focus on before and during the match. These are usually things you have been working on in practice; focus on tactical and competitive goals such as following your routine, running for every ball, dictating with your forehand, etc. Rest seated alone in a quiet and cool place in the final 15-30 minutes prior to your match (without talking to other players), listen to music or read (no distractions, phones, computers, etc.—these things require mental energy and can make you mentally tired prior to the match). Visualize the match that you will play (and be prepared for positive outcomes as well as adverse situations).

WESTON GUEST HOUSE WHAT’S EATING MY PLANTS? Many of you, inspired by our beautiful butterfly garden, have picked up butterfly plants for your own courtyard gardens. Are you seeing butterfly activity? Have you told your gardeners, “No pesticides please”? Once the butterflies start flitting about, you can be guaranteed that they are sampling the plants not only for the nectar but also to see if the plant is compatible for laying eggs. Different species of butterflies “host” on different types of plants. If you are looking to start a butterfly garden of your own, here are a couple of different host plants to try. Monarch caterpillars host on milkweed, which is also a great nectar source for other species of butterflies. If you would like to attract swallowtail butterflies, try planting parsley and dill. For zebra longwing, Julia, and Gulf fritillary butterflies, try passionvine.

FATHER-SON Finalists: Chuck Keller and Charles Keller Champions: Frank Brosens and Peter Brosens

UPCOMING EVENTS The Ladies’ and Men’s Doubles Club Championship will be held on February 18 at 9 a.m. To sign-up, please call or stop by the Tennis Shop: 772 388 8445

Butterfly eggs will hatch into caterpillars, and the plant will serve as their host. In order to develop, the caterpillars will be munching on the host plant, defoliating it. This process will not kill the plant—consider it a natural pruning. So, don’t pick off the caterpillars and don’t spray for pests; nurture these fascinating little creatures so they can form a chrysalis and transform into beautiful butterflies to begin the cycle again. If you would like to learn more, stop by the Weston Guest House or the Butterfly Garden at Concierge.

Windsor Member Linda Arnold will be the featured artist in the exhibit Toward Abstraction at the Meghan Candler Gallery, opening Wednesday, February 15 from 6-8 p.m. All Windsor Members are invited to attend the opening reception at the gallery, located in the Village Shops. Linda’s recent work captures the creative dynamic between representational and abstraction. While her paintings distill landscapes down to their essence, she keeps certain elements to ground her work — such as the horizon line — as she gives herself the freedom to push color and design. An accomplished plein air painter, Linda has had the opportunity to paint in many locations around the United States, Europe and Latin America for over 30 years. Most recently she was chosen as an Andy Warhol Artist in Residence and has had a solo exhibition at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Ligonier, Pennsylvania.
