Developing impactful, value-based leaders In June, twenty students selected as the 2017 Academy Fellows traveled to the Waycross Camp and Conference Center in Morgantown, Ind. for Alpha Kappa Psiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s intensive, distraction-free leadership retreat.

The Academy focuses on the advanced concepts, skills and values which leaders need to be effective in their roles as chapter and business leaders. The program centers primarily on the individual rather than the organization. Interactive large group sessions are complemented by small group discussions led by Alpha Kappa Psi alumni and successful business leaders.

The secluded setting for the four-day retreat allowed participants to get away from the everyday distractions of life and

hit the ground running from day one. The schedule was packed with unique experiences designed to provide new perspectives on change and systems thinking while developing both leadership and teamwork skills. It also included an emphasis on reflection and the key discipline of selfcare. The entire experience provided the

students the opportunity to evaluate their leadership styles, values, ethics, knowledge and integrity.

The 16th annual Academy was funded through the generous support of the Alpha Kappa Psi Foundation. See page 8 for a list of attendees who received fellowships to attend this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retreat.

Forty years of women in Alpha Kappa Psi At this summer’s Convention in Las Vegas, Alpha Kappa Psi celebrates the 40th anniversary of women joining the fraternity. Throughout the event, AKPsi will be showcasing stories and highlighting the many firsts from women who made a lasting impact on Alpha Kappa Psi. This anniversary marks more than just a milestone for the fraternity, but a step toward providing women the same opportunities that have historically been afforded to men. Alpha Kappa Psi honors the women who joined at a time when there might have been opposition to their presence, and who persevered and proved that AKPsi — and the business world — is just as much for women as men.

During Convention, attendees will hear from trailblazing women in the fraternity about why they chose Alpha Kappa Psi and how it contributed to their careers.

A trio of firsts at the 2007 Washington, D.C. Convention: Andrea Nemeth, who was elected the fraternity’s first female president, is joined by Carol Carter, the first female vice president (1985) and Eileen Howell, the Alpha Kappa Psi Foundation’s first female chairman (1991). At this summer’s Convention, Alpha Kappa Psi celebrates the accomplishments of its female members as the fraternity celebrates 40 years of being co-ed.

Their stories and accomplishments will also be displayed over the course of the week emphasizing the power of women in the fraternity.

Alpha Kappa Psi became co-ed in 1976 after the fraternity gave up its long fight against Title IX of the Education

Amendments Act of 1972 (see “From the Archives” on page 38). Title IX prohibit discriminations on the basis of sex in programs receiving federal financial assistance. In the case of AKPsi, it had to become co-ed to maintain its recognition on college campuses. <<

| Qualified and Certified Fraternity Volunteers Within 60 days of being appointed to a fraternity volunteer position — such as a chapter advisor or regional manager — volunteers are asked to pass the Qualified Fraternity Volunteer (QFV) exam. The exam contains 15 questions related to baseline knowledge of chapter and fraternity operations.

In addtion, those who want to elevate their designation to the next level may take the Certified Fraternity Volunteer (CFV) exam. The CFV exam is reserved for those who have successfully mastered an advanced and broad range of topics relating to volunteer resource managment. This higher-level designation is optional for volunteers, except for those serving on the boards for the fraternity or foundation, or the Fraternity Managment Team.

Convention Chairman

Wendy Wendroff This summer, Alpha Kappa Psi will meet in Las Vegas for the fraternity’s 59th Convention, and for the eighth time, the event will be chaired by long-time volunteer leader Wendy Wendroff. Putting on the fraternity’s Convention is a monumental task, but in the 17 years she’s served as chairman (the Convention is held every other year), Wendy has shattered attendance records and shaped the Convention into the signature event we experience today. If chairing the Convention wasn’t enough, Wendy also volunteers as regional director for the fraternity’s Pacific Northwest Region. In recognition for her outstanding service to Alpha Kappa Psi, she was honored with the fraternity’s highest honor, the Gold Distinguished Service Award, in 2007.

How did you become involved as an AKPsi volunteer?

Having attended the 1981 Convention in Houston as a student, I realized that AKPsi was so much more than what I went through in college and I wanted to build upon my fraternity experience. My first professional job out of college brought me to Oshkosh, Wisc. where I knew no one. I had made connections with brothers from Milwaukee at the 1981 Convention and they helped introduce me to Wisconsin and AKPsi from the alumni side.

What advice would you give someone who may want to volunteer for the fraternity?

Do it and don’t wait for someone to ask you to volunteer! Most of my volunteer roles in AKPsi were those I saw a need for and I went ahead and did it. No one asked me to volunteer to be the Convention chair. While our Conventions were good, and our attendance was fair, I wanted more brothers to have the same opportunity I had to meet brothers from around the world. I felt the Convention could move from good to great. I’ve enjoyed working with the Alpha Kappa Psi staff, volunteers and students to improve our Conventions and I can’t wait for this summer’s Convention in Las Vegas.

What is the most rewarding part of being a volunteer?

Personally, the rewarding part of being the Convention chair has been reaching and surpassing our registration goals at seven of the eight Conventions I chaired. It is very gratifying to work on a goal for two years and not only achieve that goal, but also reach higher and break records. More brothers attending Convention translates to more opportunities to network and meet people from around the world — all of which means our members get to see the greater and bigger picture of AKPsi outside of their chapter.

Patience and leadership style!

Communication styles and methods change, how you learn things change, and through my involvement with student members, I’ve been able to adapt to these changes. It hasn’t always been easy but I’ve come to realize that everyone is on a different path in their involvement with AKPsi and I must respect each and everyone’s journey.

How has it contributed to your personal development?

Through my years of attending Convention as well as the last 17 years chairing the event, my network of brothers has increased. I can travel to any major city in the US and many places around the world and know an AKPsi brother that I can call. The fraternity has given me a network of friends that I can also call family. It introduced me to my husband Dave, and we have two nephews and a niece that are also brothers. <<

WINNING LinkedIn Profile

WHETHER YOU ARE TRYING TO BOOST SALES FOR YOUR BUSINESS AND BUILD A SOLID BRAND, LAND A NEW JOB OR JUST RAISE YOUR STANDING IN THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY, A GOOD LINKEDIN PROFILE CAN HELP YOU SUCCEED.

Social networking can be a powerful tool for business, and LinkedIn has long been the gold standard in business-friendly social network applications. Unfortunately, many people never get around to creating a professional-looking profile on LinkedIn. They may know they need to be on LinkedIn, and they may even create a profile, but they never take the time to polish their presence. That can be a big mistake, since having a poor LinkedIn profile can be worse than having none at all.

MAKE YOUR PROFILE AS DETAILED AS POSSIBLE LinkedIn is a fertile hunting ground for recruiters and headhunters. Professional recruiters, hiring managers and staffing agencies spend hours looking through dozens or even hundreds of LinkedIn profiles, and

adding details to yours will help it stand out from all the rest.

Everyone lists their dates of employment and job duties, but good LinkedIn profiles go beyond the basics. Give details about what you have accomplished throughout your career, not just what you were asked to do. Write your profile with the audience in mind â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the more details you can provide the better.

MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION The headline and summary is the first thing someone viewing your LinkedIn profile will see, so make sure that first impression is a good one. You should put a lot of time and effort into getting this essential part of the profile just right.

The headline should summarize who you are and what you would bring to an employer,

while the summary should give a wouldbe employer everything they need to know about your qualifications. Think of the headline and summary portion of the LinkedIn profile as a sort of mini resume — and write accordingly.

PROOFREAD CAREFULLY It might seem obvious, but many people fail to take this simple action.

If there are spelling errors, poor word choices or grammar issues with your profile, few hiring managers or recruiters are going to stick around to read what you have to say.

Proofread your entire profile as soon as you write it, before it is posted and publicly available. Then proofread it a second time. You might want to have a friend or family member look it over as well; two sets of eyes are always better than one, especially with something this important.

ALWAYS BE HONEST It is always tempting to embroider the truth and make things look better than they really are. Facebook is home to some of the worst puffery on the planet, and social media bragging is a wellknown phenomenon.

LinkedIn, however, is not the place to brag about questionable accomplishments or embellish your résumé.

You should always be scrupulously honest when describing your work history, education and professional history.

Keep in mind the same internet that makes it so easy to post and update your LinkedIn profile also makes fact checking pretty easy. An enterprising headhunter could find out pretty easily that your master’s degree from Harvard is fictitious, or that you really didn’t train with the Navy Seals.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR URL When you create a profile on LinkedIn, the site will automatically generate a URL to go with it. You do not have to settle for that random mix of letters and numbers, however. You can edit your profile to include your name, making it easier for searchers to find you.

Just go to Settings, Edit Public Profile and choose Customize Your Public Profile URL. From there you can choose any name that is still available, and you can share that link through a variety of different means.

LinkedIn is a powerful tool for building your personal brand, landing a new job and moving up the corporate ladder. Using it effectively can boost your chances of success and help you get the most out of this unique social network.

PUT ON A HAPPY FACE Your profile picture is quite literally the face of your LinkedIn profile. Make sure that face is a good one by choosing a recently taken professional-quality head shot. The picture you choose should show you clearly and be as attractively shot as possible.

You do not have to recruit a professional photographer to do your LinkedIn picture, but you should take the time to get the best shot you can — it will be worth it in the end.

SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE You have spent a lifetime acquiring specialized knowledge in your field.

LinkedIn gives you an opportunity to share that knowledge and connect with others through its Groups feature.

LinkedIn groups are places where professionals can meet to discuss everything from the latest advances in astrophysics to the newest marketing theories. No matter what your niche, you will find others who share the same passion and interests.

Active participation in LinkedIn groups is a great way to get your name out there and help others view you as an expert. If you are the go-to person for a given subject, you can bet hiring managers and recruiters will take note of that expertise. Participating in LinkedIn groups is also a wonderful way to build your network and make the connections that will help you land your next job.

MAKE A PERSONAL CONNECTION One of the things that makes LinkedIn so powerful is the ability to connect with other professionals.

Whether you are trying to reconnect with former coworkers or find the CEO of a major corporation, you can do so through LinkedIn. You can also send email requests to connect with others, similar to the friend request function on Facebook.

The problem is that those requests can be a bit impersonal. Taking the time to edit each request and make it specific to the recipient will make you look more professional and help you build your network more effectively. <<

One of Anda’s earliest ventures was founding an all-volunteer organization that supported the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Her career has provided her with opportunities working for the government as program manager for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. While there, she led and directed branches of the US military throughout their modernization efforts.

For the past 15 years, Anda has held a position as director of the Cherry Blossom Princess Program and Alumni Network where she promotes leadership in young women. She can also be found serving as an advisory board member for the Kogod School of Business at American University.

During development, Baker decided to live in a senior living community for a week. He attended all meals, events and group exercises to better understand the needs of his target audience. Even before Reemo, Baker has been involved in ensuring safety in the healthcare industry. After losing his brother to an accidental overdose in 2011, Baker and his family have worked with Minnesota communities to raise money and awareness about the dangers of opioid addiction stemmed from prescription pain killers. Together, Baker and his family have helped to pass three bills in state legislature, working to prevent overprescribing and to help fund communities battling addiction.

He has been able to turn his practice into one of the largest in the area, making him a prominent figure within the financial industry. However, Burt has also made headlines when it comes to oral care having co-founded Woobamboo!, the organic and biodegradable oral care product company. In 2011,

You Will Never Be Wealthy Working for Someone Else

One of the greatest traps in the modern world is the idea that working for someone else will make you wealthy.

It’s true in a small number of cases, depending on your work, but the vast majority of people will never have their own mansions or experience the kind of financial independence and freedom they desire. If you want to live big, you’ll have to bet big and go on your own path.

Retirement Plans Don’t Work

Many people rely on a great 401K to help them live out the rest of their days after they retire. Unfortunately, that doesn’t work as well anymore. Wherever you live, chances are that inflation will cut up what you’ll actually get, and that’s money you’ll likely get doing things you’re not exactly fond of. At the end of your career, you’re unhappy and you’re poor.

There’s No Such Thing as the Middle Class

You’re either rich or you’re poor. You’re not just not rich, you’re a bad month away from being destitute if you’re not high class. This is the trap that gets a lot of people to settle for career work — the middle class may be good living for many people, but it no longer exists. Cheap labor is everywhere, so in many situations, you’re either the one paying for cheap labor or the one being undercut.

Your Job Will Likely Cease to Exist

Chances are, the job you’re working now will cease to exist in its current form. It’s not that they won’t need the kind of output you provide, but you’ll be replaced by either technology or cheap labor. Should you be particularly unfortunate, your job may actually cease to exist. If you think it can’t happen, think again — this has happened before and is actually a necessary step toward technological progress. It’s just that the transition almost always hurts.

Your Excuses Don’t Matter

If you think hard enough, you can find excuses for pretty much everything.

The difference between a reason and an excuse is often fear. Reasons allow for action, excuses do not. There are good reasons to stay at your current job, such as a lack of an action plan or to create a safety net. Excuses say that you’ll never be able to do it, that you’re going to stay at your job no matter what, because of so-and-so.

Quitting your job may not be for you, if you’re making a lot of money and have a lot of promotion opportunities. However, chances are it is for you, and the only reason is because you’re afraid and you don’t want to achieve your dreams of financial independence.

There’s nothing wrong with staying with where you are if that’s what you really want. There is, however, something tragic about sitting back and letting your life pass you by because you’re afraid.

Your Life is at the Whim of Everyone Who Can Fire You

You’re only as stable as your bosses allow you to be. That’s an unsettling fact to face for many people, but it is a fact.

Your paycheck can get cut, the company can fail, and you can get fired — all of these decisions can happen without your intent or action. You could be the perfect employee, but one bad decision from the the top and you’re looking for a new job while watching your bank account die.

There are two ways out. One of them is by quitting and becoming your own boss, and the other is by diversifying your revenue streams, which is similar.

If you have more than one way to make bank, you’re less vulnerable to a boss’s bad day or poor decision.

Companies Don’t Care For Employees

To say that companies care about you is facetious. They often only care as long as it improves your performance.

All those vacation days and benefits are designed to keep you in tip-top shape and eager to work for the company’s benefit. That’s not inherently bad thing — that’s the point of companies — but you shouldn’t mistake your benefits as them caring for you. They’re not going to watch out for you. Only you will truly be invested in your own improvement and wealth.

Paychecks Will Not Lead to Happiness

Strictly speaking, money won’t make you happy. It may open a few doors, but money doesn’t last. A consistent and

large revenue stream does, and more often than not, you can only get that by being your own boss. You can get raises, but they’ll come slowly and can end the moment a boss decides you’re being paid too much.

Get out there and decide for yourself how much you’re worth. Your money is only as valuable as your next influx of revenue. Control how much revenue you get, and you attain financial independence and wealth.

Your Job Isn’t Satisfying

Not everyone wants more than a steady paycheck and a warm bed to sleep in. That’s is totally OK — people are entitled to choose what they want out of life, and there is no shame in wanting the simple things. However, there is shame in staying unsatisfied in your current line of work. If you’re not happy where you are, why stay?

It’s Okay to Start Slow

You might think that you can’t just quit because you don’t have enough savings or enough of a safety net to survive on your own yet, and that’s totally fine. People aren’t born running.

First, they lie down for a few months, then they crawl, then walk, and then they can run. Quit when you are ready.

For now, write down what you want to do and what you need to do to achieve it. Make whatever you write concrete rather than theoretical.

Quitting and going solo may not be for everyone, but if it’s for you, don’t hesitate. Nothing about being an employee is stable. Too much is up in the air, from how much money you’ll actually make to how your bosses will treat you and the company. Take your destiny into your hands today. <<

Six Women Join AKPsi At this summer’s Convention, Alpha Kappa Psi will celebrate the 40th anniversary of women joining the fraternity. In honor of this milestone, the Diary takes a look at the complicated history that led Alpha Kappa Psi to becoming co-ed.

Buried in the chapter news section of the autumn, 1976 issue of The Diary of Alpha Kappa Psi, the Theta Xi Chapter at Tri-State University shares a photo and news of its fall initiation. As news goes, this was something chapters typically reported in the magazine — nothing out of the ordinary. Except for one thing.

The photo included women — six to be exact. For the first time, a photograph of female members was published in the Diary. As stated in the chapter’s write-up: “The initiation was held on the second floor of Tri-State’s Recitation Building, and unless someone proves otherwise, they were the first females to be initiated full fledged members of Alpha Kappa Psi, nationally.”

As it would turn out, these weren’t the first women to be initiated — they were likely the first to be reported to the fraternity at the time the Diary went to the printer as chapters continued to report their initiations that fall. Regardless, this was the first-ever mention of female initiates in the magazine. Big news for a fraternity that had been an

all-men’s organization for nearly 72 years.

How and when did Alpha Kappa Psi become co-ed? Theta Xi’s initiation was held on September 17, 1976. Less than two months earlier, the fraternity’s board of directors voted by a 15-1 margin to remove “must be men and” from Article III, Section I of Alpha Kappa Psi’s Constitution. With that vote, the fraternity was no longer exclusive to men.

The decision to go co-ed was inevitable. The board’s vote came after an exhaustive four-year battle against Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 which President Nixon signed into law. The law states, in part, that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”

Alpha Kappa Psi fought back. As a member of what would become the Fraternal Alliance for Inalienable Rights (FAIR), AKPsi and other men’s and women’s groups challenged Title

IX by supporting amendments that would provide exemptions for fraternal organizations.

One such amendment, which passed in 1974, exempted social fraternities and sororities from Title IX. But interpreting the law was confusing because some social fraternities (members of the National Intefraternity Conference) restricted memberships to certain professions or occupational areas. How could fraternal groups such as Alpha Kappa Psi not be exempted when “professional” members of the NIC would be exempted? The Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW), which was authorized to implement Title IX, was asked to provide clarification.

Instead, it replied by stating the law would be interpreted and judged on a case by case basis.

FAIR hoped the issue would be resolved through an amendment to the Appropriations Act of 1976 which would have allowed separate physical education classes and professional societies for men and women in federally aided schools at

all levels. After passing in the House by one vote, the amendment was soundly defeated in the Senate in July of 1975.

A month later, the Women’s Equity Action League (WEAL) filed a complaint against Alpha Kappa Psi for not being in compliance with Title IX. With the fraternity’s Convention being held just a week after WEAL’s complaint was filed, the Chapter Congress would get to take up the issue.

Alpha Kappa Psi would remain defiant. The August, 1975 Chapter Congress Meeting in Minneapolis voted to not allow female membership but continue seeking exemptive legislation from

Title IX. However, knowing it would be another two years before the Chapter Congress would meet again (and a lot can happen in two years), it authorized the fraternity’s board of directors to amend the Constitution on its behalf if it was inevitable that an exemption from Title IX would not happen.

During this time, FAIR hired a lobbyist to assist in obtaining exemptive legislation for the professional fraternities. While the lobbyist advised it was possible but not probable legislation would pass, a bill with legislation exempting certain Title IX implementations was introduced in Congress in May of 1976. It was defeated.

It was clear by now an exemption for professional fraternities was not going to happen, and at the August, 1976 board of director’s meeting, the board pulled the trigger and amended Alpha Kappa Psi’s Constitution by removing language that prohibited women from becoming members.

“This issue is now behind us,” Fraternity President Richard Rais said in an open letter to the membership published in that summer’s issue of the Diary, “It is time to stop discussion and act positively. We have other important matters to concern us, such as our goals for this coming year.” <<
