IN THE SHADOW OF THE MEGACITY Symposium and Public Discussion Symposium co-organizer The Cooper Union, NY September 2015 Chermayeff House, Wellfleet, MA May 2015 How can architecture be understood in the context of the process of urbanization? After conducting preliminary research, we framed a set of questions about land use, population migration and density, and use of resources, and presented them to a group of scholars, practitioners, and officials in two events: On Cape Cod we discussed rural communities and the implications of urbanization on territories remote from the city.

Symposium organized in collaboration with Tulay Atak and supported by The Cape Code Modern House Trust, The Cooper Union School of Architecture, and The Institute for Sustainable Design

In New York we framed urbanization as a primarily socio-economic process that transforms and changes existing reciprocities between territories, and asked how architecture can interact with it under these terms.

We are currently working on synthesizing the discussions in preparation for a publication.

TAGHKANIC, NY GIS data mapping and analysis for Town zoning committee

With the anticipated expansion of the urban corridor between Albany and New York City, the town of Taghkanic along the Hudson River is reconsidering its current zoning ordinance. In collaboration with a zoning committee member, this set of maps distills the main parameters for the town’s future development. Each map represents different sets or relationships between environmental and political boundaries, and is meant to be used as a decision making tool to ensure ecologically and socially responsible growth.

SIX SQUARES FOR TORONTO ULI Competition Entry Harvard University GSD, 2018 In collaboration with Rob Meyerson, Long Fung Wu, SK Kim, Young Hui Kim Six Squares For Toronto Is An Urban Design Scheme Which Provides A Framework For Community Life, Work And Production In The City. As The City Of Toronto Is Constantly Evolving And Reinventing Itself, This Design Scheme Is Flexible, Can Adapt For Multiple Uses, While Never Limited To One Individual Program. The Squares And The Park Provide Open Civic Spaces, While The Buildings Frame Them, Creating Lively Urban Streets.

BETWEEN EARTH AND SKY: CIVIC CENTER FOR HAFENCITY, HAMBURG GERMANY Harvard University GSD, Spring 2018 Prof. Eric Parry At the edge of the current Hafencity development and at the middle of future phases, this project serves the growing residential and business community of Hafencity. It provides the set of daily services, such as clinics and small retail, as well as cultural and civic amenities. The tower continues the local formal tradition through its form and material (stone), while marking pointing towards the future, through its scale.

INPORT/EXPORT Savannah, Rethinking the Multi Scalar Capacity of the City Project Harvard University GSD, Spring 2017 Prof. Joan Busquets The proposed masterplan for Savannah’s waterfront defines Bay Street’s southern edge, enhances its mixed use commercial character, and reinforces the street’s connection to the wards and to the water. In its current condition, Savannah’s Bay street is a wide road acting as the border between the city and its water’s edge. The mix of spaces along Bay’s street northern edge create fragmented public spaces which fail to define the street’s edge. As such, Bay street becomes a divider rather than a connector between the waterfront and the wards. The proposed plan strengthens existing pedestrian links between the city and the waterfront to allow for more diverse and accessible means of circulation to and from the water. The vehicular traffic remains only at the city level, freeing the water level (40’ lower) to pedestrians only. Programmatically the masterplan is divided into three equal segments, corresponding to the main programs along the city’s edge: the eastern residential segment, the civic/historic central segment, and the western commercial one.

The experience of inhabiting the street by creating visual connection between pedestrians, cyclists and residence, provide wide sidewalks with protection from rain and sun, and experience trees and greenery at multiple levels.

Additionally, the streets are used as a mechanism to retain and slowly release water during surge or flood.

The civic, historic and commercial segments of the plan are a stitched to the city though a series of interventions which create different sectional conditions and by this experience. Bay’s street edge is defined by landscaping and small-scale pavilions along it.

Identifying the path to the waterfront on the north-south axis, and the circulation along the waterfront on the east-west axis, connections are established at the intersections in the form of public plazas. There are primarily two types of connections, a direct connection, through at the busy axis, and an indirect connection at the secondary route. The indirect routs is through the current service zone, between the buildings and the cliff, by this opening it up to public circulation and use. In this scheme, the city extends to the water and in other moments the waterfront to the city. While weaved into one another, the proposed public spaces and interventions bring the port back to the city as a culturally and commercially active space.

CITY OF STREETS The Street as an Interior Space In collaboration with Rob Meyerson Harvard University GSD, Fall 2016 Prof. Carles Muro Streets are the most public and the most urban spaces in a city, and no single building has the capacity to influence as city as much as a street has. As such, this project suggests to begin designing a site from its street. Located in Sunset Park, New York, this project proposes the construction of a mixed used commercial, light manufacturing and housing development, in which the street is the main public space.

URBAN FOREST: HOUSTON, TEXAS The Cooper Union, Fall 2012-Spring 2013 Prof. David Turnbull, Hayley Eber, Urtzi Grau, Elisabetta Terragni The project proposes to reorganize the urban form of Houston, Texas through the restoration of the prairie and the creation of a continuous urban forest. These two ecosystems will be integrated within the urban fabric and used as an environmental, social, and architectural tool to create new spaces in the city and improve existing ones, both private and public. With the future expansion of urban centers around the world, my project hypothesis is that a new equilibrium between nature and human habitation must be achieved in order to adapt to a changing climate, environment, and society. This design proposal consists of two strategies; a network of biological islands and a series of modular transit stations that connect them.

Houston, Texas is the site chosen for the study, as it raises extreme urban and environments challenges. The constant changes of this un-zoned and rapidly growing city require a highly adaptable infrastructure that can efficiently serve the citizens of the city in its extreme climatic conditions.

SIMI VALLEY: SUBURBAN FORM The Cooper Union, Fall 2011 Prof. Kevin Bone, Susannah Drake, Rafi Segal In my study of Simi Valley in California I was trying to identify the characteristics of suburban living and isolate them to understand what the suburban experience is comprised of. First I looked at the formal organization patterns of Simi Valley and recognized that the city’s form is dictated primarily by the plain of the valley, the grid of the roads and the drainage streams of the valley. This form of organization created a condition in which the programmatic division of the city has a patchlike pattern, the different programs are restricted to distinct zones and do not spread or mix throughout the city. This also results in an experience in which the circulation through the city is redundant, expected and composed of a small variety of visual components in a monotonous rhythm.

In this project I used one of the abandoned drainage channels as a spine that dictated the placement of several systems of organization aimed to reconstruct the urban fabric of the suburb. My proposal was to layer additional formulating systems on top of the existing to enhance the rhythm and variety of visual objects, events and interactions that occur along the streets, and by this the complexity of the urban experience.

The channel, once a divider and now a unifier, has public programs within walking distance of one another along the route and view corridors to the mountains of the valley which are framed by high density housing. This proposal focuses on rethinking one of the Simi valley’s main drainage channels as part of a larger system of urban spines that can together transform the urban experience and reconnect it to the natural environment.

HOWL! HAPPENING Gallery and Performance Space East Village, New York 2,000 Sqft Completed in 2015 Howl Arts Inc is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the past and celebrating the contemporary culture of the East Village and the Lower East Side. Two years after completing Howl’s first gallery, the organization has grown and obtained new properties. Both are currently in different phases of design.
