Usem as oportunidades que tiverem para interagir com os alumni do Técnico e, no futuro, considerem voltar à escola para transmitir a vossa experiência aos futuros estudantes. A excelência do Técnico nas áreas de engenharia, ciência, tecnologia e arquitetura é o resultado de muitas décadas dedicadas à missão de disseminar o conhecimento, promover o avanço da ciência, e transferir tecnologia para o tecido industrial. Como alunos do IST, passarão a ser vocês os responsáveis por manter a tradição de qualidade e excelência que tem sido a marca distintiva do Técnico por mais de um século.
EN It is my privilege to welcome you to a new academic year at Técnico. In particular, I greet the incoming batch of new undergraduate and graduate students, who arrive here with an interest in learning new things and a will to succeed in what are some of the hardest fields of study, in the areas of science, technology, and architecture. However, hard as they may be, these fields are becoming more and more important in the development of economies, countries, and societies. As you become part of the IST community, you will find that becoming a competent professional in these areas requires
effort and dedication, as you struggle to learn the technical matters that constitute the core of your curriculum. However, you will also find that the most important thing you will acquire at Técnico is not knowledge about the technical subjects, but the non-technical knowledge and experience that comes from being immersed in a lively and diverse community. Remember that the most important thing you will take with you from your years as a Técnico student will be the ability to learn by yourself and to interact with your fellows in a productive way. Use these years not only to identify and to learn about the fields and areas that are most interesting for your future career, but also to establish networks of friends and colleagues that will last for a lifetime. Use the opportunities to interact with Técnico alumni, and, in the future, consider coming back to our school to pass your experience to future students. The excellence of Técnico in the fields of engineering, science, technology, and architecture is the result of many decades dedicated to the mission of disseminating knowledge, advancing science, and transferring technology. As a new incoming student, you will be responsible for continuing the tradition of quality and excellence that has been the hallmark of IST for more than a century.

PT É meu privilégio dar-vos as boas-vindas neste início de um novo ano académico no Técnico. Em particular, saúdo os novos alunos de licenciatura e pós-graduação, que chegam com o entusiasmo de aprender novas matérias e com a vontade de ser bem sucedidos no campo de estudo que escolheram, numa área que é certamente desafiante mas também muito interessante. As áreas da ciência, tecnologia e arquitetura são áreas difíceis e trabalhosas, mas também recompensadoras, e têm-se tornado cada vez mais importantes no desenvolvimento das economias, países e sociedades. À medida que se integrarem na comunidade IST, vão perceber que ser um profissional competente nestas áreas requer muito esforço e dedicação, necessários para apreenderem os aspetos técnicos que constituem a base dos currículo do IST. No entanto, vão também descobrir que a coisa mais importante que aprenderão no Técnico não é tanto o conhecimento sobre os aspetos técnicos do vosso curso, mas a experiência de vida que provém de estarem imersos numa comunidade animada e diversificada. Lembrem-se que a coisa mais importante que vão levar convosco, dos anos como estudante do Técnico, é a capacidade de aprenderem por vocês mesmos e de interagirem com colegas de uma forma produtiva e eficaz. PT O professor Luís Oliveira e Silva, docente do Departamento de Física e presidente do Conselho Científico do Técnico, foi condecorado com o grau de Grande Oficial da Ordem de Instrução Pública pelo Presidente da República. Na cerimónia, que decorreu no Palácio de Belém, foram também condecorados outros dois professores – o matemático Eduardo Veloso (Comendador) e o médico António Vasconcelos Tavares (Grande Oficial). Para Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, os três homens, “através de percursos diversos, enriqueceram a Ciência e a Academia em Portugal”. Na pessoa de Luís Oliveira e Silva, o Presidente distinguiu “um percurso cientificamente notável, no plano interno e internacional, que cobre a investigação, a inovação, a criatividade, mas não fica por aí”. “Aceita ainda a incumbência de presidir a um órgão tão complexo como é o Conselho Científico de uma das escolas, (…) se não a mais, impressivamente qualificada que [pude] contactar ao longo da vida.” “Aqui, o galardão é um galardão à carreira passada, mas também um inventivo à carreira futura”, concluiu.
EN Professor Luís Oliveira e Silva, a physics department professor and president of Técnico's scientific board, has been awarded the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of Public Instruction by the President of the Republic. During the ceremony, held at the Palácio de Belém , two other professors were also honoured - mathematician Eduardo Veloso (Commendator) and physician António Vasconcelos Tavares (Grand Officer). According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, these three men, “following different paths, enriched Portuguese scientific and academic life”. The President honoured Luis Oliveira e Silva for “a scientifically remarkable journey, both domestically and internationally, which comprises research, innovation, creativity and more”. “He also accepted the task of chairing such a complex body as the scientific board of one of the most, (...) if not the most, impressively qualified teaching institutions that I've ever been in touch with.” “In this case, the honour rewards a past career, but it is also an incentive for his future career”, the President said.
PT O Técnico Solar Boat (TSB), um projeto de alunos do Técnico que tem o objetivo de construir uma embarcação de competição movida a energia solar, está a promover uma campanha de crowdfunding para aquisição de baterias. O projeto, composto por mais de 30 alunos, é apoiado por 18 empresas, mas a ausência de patrocínio por parte de uma empresa fabricante de baterias levou-os a apostar nesta campanha, no valor de 1400 euros. O TSB foi criado em 2014 e tem como objetivo participar na Solar 1 Monte Carlo Cup 2017, no Mónaco, e na Dutch Solar Challenge 2018, na Holanda. Estas são competições que, segundo os participantes, “promovem alguns dos principais avanços tecnológicos em diversas áreas de Engenharia”. EN Técnico Solar Boat (TSB), a project created by IST students whose goal it is to build a solar-powered racing boat, created a crowdfunding campaign to purchase batteries. Comprising over 30 students, the project is sponsored by 18 companies, but the fact that there are no battery manufacturers among the sponsors led them to create this campaign. They are seeking 1400 euros. The TSB was created in 2014 and its main goal is to compete in the 2017 edition of the Solar 1 Monte Carlo Cup in Monaco, and in the 2018 edition of the Dutch Solar Challenge in the Netherlands. According to the participants, these competitions “promote some of the most important technological breakthroughs in several fields of engineering”.

PlasmaSurf 2016: mais uma edição de sucesso PlasmaSurf 2016: another successful edition
EN Another edition of the Robotics Workshop for high school students, organized by ISR (Institute for Systems and Robotics), was held in the last week of July as part of the program Ciência Viva no Laboratório – Ocupação Científica de Jovens nas Férias. The purpose of this initiative, which has gone through some changes since the previous editions, is to familiarize participants with “various aspects of science and technology” - such as a control, communications, physics, mathematics, programming, energy and autonomy by building a robot. Halfway into the week, Pedro Roque, one of the instructors, said that the students were “highly motivated and looking for solutions by themselves”. “This is an excellent way to provide some programming and robotics foundations”, the electrical and computer engineering student said. “It gives them a chance to learn much more than they would back in school, and in a completely different way.”
PT A PlasmaSurf é uma escola de verão em Física dos Plasmas cujo nome se inspira na transferência de energia duma onda sobre uma carga elétrica. Este é o mote ideal para uma demonstração no maior laboratório em Portugal: o oceano, onde os alunos colocam em prática este princípio através do Surf. Organizada pelo Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear (IPFN), com o apoio da Fusenet - The European Fusion Education Network, e já na sua quarta edição, a PlasmaSurf alia o melhor de uma escola de verão à beira-mar e repleta de atividades ao ar livre com alguns dos assuntos mais interessantes da Física de Plasmas, lecionados por professores e investigadores reputados. Os conteúdos abordaram temas como a Física Computacional, Plasmas no Espaço, Lasers e interações Laser-Plasma, Plasmas nas Nanotecnologias, contribuições para o ITER e o JET, entre outros.

PT Decorreu, na última semana de julho, mais uma edição da Oficina de Robótica para alunos do Ensino Secundário, organizada pelo ISR – Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica, no âmbito do programa Ciência Viva no Laboratório – Ocupação Científica de Jovens nas Férias. O objetivo desta atividade, que teve algumas alterações face a edições anteriores, é familiarizar os participantes com “vários aspetos ligados à Ciência e à Tecnologia”, como controlo, comunicações, Física, Matemática, programação, energia e autonomia, através da construção de um robô. A meio da semana, Pedro Roque, um dos monitores, garantia que os jovens estavam “bastante motivados e à procura de soluções por si mesmos”. “Esta é uma forma excelente de garantir algumas bases de programação e robótica”, referiu o aluno de Engenharia Eletrotécnica e de Computadores. “Aqui têm a oportunidade de aprender muito mais do que o que fazem na escola, e de uma forma diferente.”
EN PlasmaSurf is a plasma physics summer school named after the energy transfer from a wave onto an electric charge. This is the perfect starting point for a demo in Portugal's largest laboratory: the ocean, where students use surfing to put this principle to practice. Organized by the Institute for Plasma Research and Nuclear Fusion (IPFN), with the support of Fusenet, and currently in its fourth edition, PlasmaSurf brings together the excitement of a seaside summer school packed with outdoor activities and some of the most interesting topics in plasma physics, taught by renowned lecturers and researchers. The activities covered such topics as computational physics, plasmas in space, lasers and laser-plasma interactions, plasmas in nanotechnologies, and contributions to ITER and JET, among others.

IT recebe novo programa Ciência Viva no Laboratório IT hosts a new Ciência Viva program in Lab

PT O IT – Instituto de Telecomunicações voltou a receber, este ano, estudantes do Ensino Secundário no âmbito do programa Ciência Viva no Laboratório, para uma semana de Introdução às Telecomunicações (INTELE). Os estágios, que decorreram no Técnico (Alameda) e no polo do instituto na Covilhã, foram novamente um sucesso: aprender a soldar foi uma das atividades favoritas dos participantes, mas descobrir os mitos da internet, aprender mais sobre energia sem fios e perceber o que é a modelação em telecomunicações também “encheram o olho” dos jovens. Francisco, de 16 anos, explica que ficou “surpreendido com a clareza com que os tutores explicaram os princípios que governam a telecomunicações”, fazendo referência à importância das sessões teóricas em que os alunos também participaram. Akruti, também ele presente no estágio, afirma que a experiência é “um forte incentivo para estudar mais, para que, no futuro” consiga ingressar num dos cursos do Técnico.
EN The Institute for Telecommunications (IT) once again hosted the Ciência Viva program in Lab, welcoming high school students for a week of telecommunications 101 (INTELE). The event, which was held at Técnico (Alameda) and at the institute's campus in Covilhã, was once again a success: learning to weld was one of the participants' favourite activities, but unravelling the myths of the Internet, learning more about wireless energy and understanding the meaning of telecommunication modelling also captured the students' attention. Referring to the importance of theoretical sessions, which students also attended, Francisco (16-years-old) said he was “surprised by the clarity with which tutors explained the governing principles of telecommunications”. Akruti, who also attended the event, says that the experience is “a strong incentive to study more, so that in the future” he can manage to get into one of Técnico's programs.
Técnico envolvido na criação de Laboratório de Fósseis em Moçambique Fossil Preparation Laboratory set up in Mozambique with the support of Técnico PT O primeiro laboratório de preparação de fósseis em Moçambique, localizado em Marracuene, ficou concluído no passado mês de agosto e teve grande apoio do Técnico e da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), através do projeto PaleoTech. A formação de cientistas para atuarem na área foi feita em instituições portuguesas, no âmbito do projeto PalNiassa, para preservar o património paleontológico moçambicano. “Este projeto científico inovador foi iniciado por paleontólogos portugueses com apoio do Museu Nacional de Geologia de Maputo, e tem como objetivo preservar o património paleontológico do território moçambicano, através da formação de cientistas moçambicanos, da descoberta de novos fósseis e da criação de um laboratório de preparação de fósseis”, referiu em comunicado o paleontólogo Ricardo Araújo, membro do programa. EN The KC-390 aircraft - Embraer's latest project - was presented in July at an event held at OGMA's workshops in Alverca, and was attended by several IST professors and students. This project is considered the largest Portuguese aeronautical project ever. Throughout its development, Embraer, OGMA and the Automotive Industry Center for Excellence and Innovation (CEIIA) had the support of several Portuguese universities, including - through Técnico - Universidade de Lisboa. In addition to the representatives of the school's management bodies, including IST president professor Arlindo Oliveira, the event was also attended by several students of the Master's program in aerospace engineering, at the invitation of Embraer Defesa e Segurança. Prime Minister António Costa praised the quality of “engineering-based work - CEIIA's engineering, of course, but also engineering at numerous Portuguese universities, an engineering, which is present in many Portuguese companies”.
PT Carlota Fernandes, Diogo Repas e Nelson Rebelo, alunos da Escola Secundária Sebastião e Silva, em Oeiras, ganharam o concurso Odysseus II, promovido pela Agência Espacial Europeia (ESA), com o desenvolvimento de um robô para exploração de Marte. Com a vitória no concurso, os estudantes, que contaram com o tutorado do professor João Sequeira do Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica (ISR) do Técnico, foram distinguidos com o título de Embaixadores Especiais da Juventude Europeia, ganhando ainda uma viagem à Guiana Francesa. O robô apresentado pelos alunos a concurso, batizado LEARS (Learning Robotics in Space), destacou-se dos restantes 210 projetos de 23 países, assegurando o primeiro lugar na competição. By winning this competition, the students, who were tutored by professor João Sequeira (Institute for Systems and Robotics - ISR), were appointed Special European Youth Ambassadors and won a trip to French Guiana. The robot submitted by these students - called LEARS (Learning Robotics in Space) - stood out from the remaining 210 projects from 23 countries and secured them the first place in the competition.

PT Foi apresentada em julho a aeronave KC-390, o mais recente projeto da Embraer, num evento que contou com a presença de vários docentes e alunos do Técnico nas oficinas da OGMA, em Alverca. Este projeto é considerado o maior projeto aeronáutico português. Ao longo do seu desenvolvimento, a Embraer, a OGMA e o Centro de Excelência e Inovação da Indústria Automóvel (CEIIA) contaram com o apoio de várias universidades portuguesas, entre elas a Universidade de Lisboa, através do Técnico. No evento, além dos representantes dos órgãos de gestão da escola, entre eles o presidente do Técnico, professor Arlindo Oliveira, estiveram também presentes vários alunos do Mestrado em Engenharia Aeroespacial, a convite da Embraer Defesa e Segurança. O primeiro-ministro, António Costa, referiu a exemplaridade do “trabalho que é feito a partir da engenharia, engenharia desde logo do CEIIA, mas engenharia também de muitas das universidades portuguesas, engenharia presente em muitas empresas portuguesas”.

PT O professor Pedro Domingos, antigo aluno do Técnico e atualmente docente na Universidade de Washington, esteve presente no Técnico, no âmbito das INESC-ID Distinguished Lecture Series, para uma palestra sobre o tema “The Five Tribes of Machine Learning, and What You Can Take from Each”. Ao longo de cerca de uma hora, o professor – cujo livro, “The Master Algorithm”, foi recentemente considerado por Bill Gates um dos livros fundamentais para compreender a Inteligência Artificial – falou sobre as cinco “tribos” ligadas ao Machine Learning. No final, Pedro Domingos deixou um conselho aos presentes: “Têm que estar preparados para descartar o que aprenderam, porque vos limita. ‘Aprendam tudo, mas não acreditem em nada’, é o que costumo dizer, porque o vosso trabalho é tornar o conhecimento obsoleto.”
EN Professor Pedro Domingos, an IST alumnus and University of Washington lecturer, visited Técnico as part of the INESC-ID Distinguished Lecture Series for a lecture on "The Five Tribes of Machine Learning, and What You Can Take from Each." Over about an hour, Professor Pedro Domingos - whose book "The Master Algorithm" was recently considered by Bill Gates as one of the key books to understand artificial intelligence talked about the five "tribes" associated with machine learning. In the end, Pedro Domingos gave some advice to his listeners: "You must be prepared to discard what you have learned because it limits you. 'Learn everything, but believe nothing' is what I say because your job is to make knowledge obsolete."
PT As Olímpiadas do Rio de Janeiro, que decorreram no mês de agosto, contaram com a participação de um aluno e dois alumni do Técnico, em representação de Portugal e Angola. Por Portugal, Diogo Abreu, aluno de Engenharia Eletrotécnica e de Computadores, competiu na prova individual de Ginástica de Trampolins, tendo terminado na 16.ª posição. Já João Rodrigues, ex-aluno de Engenharia Mecânica, participou nas regatas de Vela (Classe RS:X), tendo alcançado o 11.º lugar. O velejador, que é o atleta português com maior número de presenças olímpicas (sete), foi também porta-estandarte da missão portuguesa na cerimónia de abertura dos Jogos. Pedro Pinotes, antigo aluno de Engenharia Civil, por sua vez, competiu na prova de 400 metros Estilos (Natação), em representação de Angola, terminando na 25.ª posição. w In late July, on the occasion of its third anniversary, Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa), with the support of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, presented the Universidade de Lisboa Scientific Awards, with which eight Técnico professors and researchers were honoured. Covering 20 different research areas, the purpose of these awards, according to ULisboa, is to celebrate “scientific research activity and encourage publishing in international top-quality journals”. Ana Póvoa (economics and management), Vítor Cardoso (physics and materials), Hugo Tavares (pure and applied mathematics) and Francisco C. Santos (computer science) won the awards, while Carla Carvalho (biology, biological engineering, biochemistry and biotechnology), José Nuno Canongia Lopes (chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmaceutical engineering), Jorge Ferreira Vieira (physics and materials) and Sara Madeira (computer science) received honourable mentions.
PT O professor Vítor Cardoso, docente do Departamento de Física e investigador do CENTRA – Centro Multidisciplinar de Astrofísica, foi eleito como Membro do Comité da International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation, para um mandato que acaba em 2025. A eleição envolveu todos os membros internacionais afiliados com a Sociedade, e o resultado foi comunicado oficialmente em Nova Iorque durante o maior encontro da área, o GR21. O professor Vítor Cardoso é autor de um livro e mais de 150 artigos científicos, recebeu duas ERC grants do European Research Council, e em 2015 foi agraciado com o título de Oficial da Ordem de Sant’Iago da Espada, pelo Presidente da República.

PT A Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa), com o apoio da Caixa Geral de Depósitos, atribuiu no final de julho, na cerimónia do 3.º aniversário da Universidade, os Prémios Científicos Universidade de Lisboa, em que distinguiu oito docentes e investigadores do Técnico. Estes prémios visam, segundo a ULisboa, distinguir “a atividade de investigação científica e incentivar a prática de publicação em revistas internacionais de reconhecida qualidade”, e foram atribuídos em 20 áreas de investigação. EN Vítor Cardoso, professor at the Department of Physics and researcher at CENTRA – Multidisciplinary Centre for Astrophysics, was elected a Member of the Committee of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation, for a term ending in 2025. The election votes were released during the GR21 meeting in New York City. Professor Vítor Cardoso is the author of a book and published over 150 scientific papers. He was awarded two European Research Council (ERC) grants and, in 2015, he received the Ordem de Sant’Iago da Espada title, awarded by the President of the Portuguese Republic.

PT Arraial do Técnico, Mega Arraial, Super Arraial. O nome da festa organizada pela Associação dos Estudantes do Instituto Superior Técnico (AEIST) mudou bastante ao longo dos anos, mas o objetivo mantém-se o mesmo: dar as boas-vindas aos novos alunos e garantir que quem vem “gosta e traz os amigos”. Luís Prior, coordenador da edição deste ano, explica que o Arraial do Técnico “surgiu para receber os alunos num novo ano e integrar os novos alunos na comunidade académica”. Além disso, assume, “é o evento que mais dá a imagem da AEIST junto dos alunos do Técnico”: “Infelizmente para nós, quando se fala da associação, a maior parte dos alunos só sabe que existe o Arraial, mais nada. É mau para nós, porque fazemos muito mais do que isso”. Ao longo dos anos – a primeira edição foi em 1993 e, em 2016, teremos a 22.ª edição – uma das preocupações da AEIST foi manter (sempre que possível, e com o mínimo de interrupções) o Arraial em funcionamento. “Esta é a única grande festa académica que existe no Técnico”,

EN Técnico's Arraial, Mega Arraial, Super Arraial. The name of the party, organized by the IST Students' Association (AEIST), has changed a lot over the years, but its purpose remains the same: to welcome new students and make sure visitors “have fun and bring their friends”. Luís Prior, the coordinator of this year's edition, explains that IST's Arraial “was initially created to welcome students into a new year and integrate new students into the academic community”. Furthermore, he acknowledges, “it is the most important event for the promotion of AEIST among IST students. “Unfortunately for us, most students think that the Association's sole purpose is to organize the Arraial, nothing more. That's bad for us because we do so much more than that.” Over the years - the first edition took place in 1993 and the 22nd edition will be held in 2016 - one of AEIST's main concerns was to keep the Arraial running - whenever it was viable, and with as few interruptions as possible. “This is Técnico's only major academic party”,

PT lembra Luís Prior. “Além disso, foi a primeira grande festa que surgiu em Lisboa… Antes, este era o grande nome. Perdeu um bocadinho a importância por ter uma menor dimensão, e porque outras festas apareceram, mas nem sequer se considera deixar de fazer o Arraial.” “Dá muito trabalho, é feito um esforço enorme por parte da associação para conseguir fazê-lo, mas achamos que é fulcral para os alunos”, diz o jovem, que chegou até à coordenação para “revolucionar” o Arraial. “Sempre fui um bocado crítico, tinha muitas opiniões sobre as coisas, e é por isso que estou cá. (…) Trabalhar no Arraial, e na associação, é trabalhar para termos aquilo que gostávamos de ter tido quando estávamos do lado de fora.” Segundo Luís Prior, que desde o início do ano trabalha para garantir que nos dias 7 e 8 de outubro tudo corre sobre rodas, se tudo correr como se quer, “este ano o Arraial vai ser diferente de certeza” – em quê, ainda está no segredo dos deuses. “Se conseguirmos fazer o que queremos, vai ser uma festa muito melhor, mas não podemos revelar mais”, garante Guilherme Lopes, coordenador da Recreativa da AEIST e um dos membros da equipa que trabalha no Arraial. “É por causa de pessoas como nós que o arraial não vai perder o seu nome, o seu espírito, e vai continuar a ser o grande evento que é”, diz o estudante. “O Arraial vai continuar a estar no topo da lista para todos os estudantes de Lisboa.” Apesar de, como diz Luís Prior, o Arraial do Técnico ter perdido algum peso no panorama das festas universitárias em Lisboa, ainda é uma peça incontornável para muitos. “Normalmente, [o Arraial] é diferente de todas as outras festas académicas. Não costuma ser uma festa muito comercial, sempre teve um registo um bocado diferente das outras.” A ideia, para o futuro, é “manter isso e fazer com que as pessoas que cá vêm gostem e tragam os amigos”. O esforço que fazem, durante todo o ano, é por amor à camisola. “Acho que o que nos motiva é mesmo o gosto de querer ver um evento destes acontecer. O gosto pelo evento, por organizar coisas para bem da associação”, explica Guilherme Lopes. Luís Prior salienta o facto de ser um desafio, com coisas a melhorar: “Quando há uma coisa que já está muito bem feita é só manter tudo a rolar, e isso não me interessa muito”.

O cartaz desta edição será revelado, como habitualmente, durante a primeira semana de aulas, em setembro. Até lá, ainda há muito trabalho para fazer – e uma das preocupações é garantir que, no futuro, há interessados em pegar no projeto. “Acho que é essencial que continuem a existir pessoas que queiram pegar na AEIST e levar esta casa para a frente, em primeiro lugar, mas também dar ao Arraial aquilo que ele merece – tentar sempre melhorá-lo”, afirma Guilherme Lopes. “É preciso motivar as pessoas e perceber que a associação faz sentido”, acrescenta Luís Prior. Para o futuro, os jovens têm grandes ambições: “Espero que se consiga ter uma almofada orçamental bem maior do que a atual, para trazer bandas melhores, internacionais, de renome. Mas isso é um trabalho contínuo, tem que haver muitos anos bons”, assume Luís Prior. Guilherme Lopes complementa: “Gostava de ver um Arraial que continua a crescer sem se deixar vencer. Espero ver o Arraial a ser um evento da cidade, uma coisa que toda a gente sabe que existe, e um dos mais concorridos da receção ao caloiro”. E sempre na Alameda do Técnico. “O Arraial do Técnico é para ficar cá, a ideia é mesmo essa – ter a Alameda toda cheia”, diz, com um sorriso, Luís Prior. •

“If something is already perfect you just need to keep it rolling, and that doesn't interest me much”. This edition's program, as usual, will be revealed during the first week of school in September. Until then, there's still much work to do - and one of the main concerns is to make sure there are students interested in pursuing the project in the future. “I think it is crucial that we continue to have people who want to work for AEIST and take this project forward, in the first place, but also give IST's Arraial what it deserves – to always try to improve it”, Guilherme Lopes says. “We need to motivate people and show that the Association has a purpose”, Luís Prior adds. These young students have big ambitions for the future: “I hope there will be a much larger budget than what we have now, to bring better bands, international bands, famous names. But this is a work in progress, we must have several good years”, Luís Prior says. Guilherme Lopes adds: “I would like IST's Arraial to keep on growing and overcome all obstacles. I hope to see the Arraial become a city event, something everybody knows about, and one of the busiest freshmen welcome events”. And always at IST's Alameda. “IST's Arraial is going to stay here. That's the idea, to have the Alameda area brimming with people”, Luís Prior says with a smile. •

EN Luís Prior reminds. “Moreover, it was the first major party in Lisbon... It used to be the most important event. It has lost some of its importance because it's smaller, and because other parties have emerged, but discontinuing the Arraial event is not even an option." “It's a lot of work, it requires a huge effort from the Association, but we think it's crucial for our students”, says Luís Prior, who joined the committee to “revolutionize” IST's Arraial. “I've always been a bit critical, I have many opinions about things, and that's why I'm here. (...) Working for IST's Arraial and for the Association means working to have what we would have liked to have when we were on the other side of the fence.” According to Luís Prior, who's been working since early this year to make sure everything goes smoothly on October 7 and 8, this year's Arraial dates, if everything goes according to plan, it “will be different for sure”. How so? It's confidential. “If we manage to do what we want, it will be a much better party, but this is all we can say for now”, says Guilherme Lopes, AEIST's recreational activities coordinator and a member of the Arraial committee. “It is because of people like us that IST's Arraial will keep its reputation, its spirit, and continue to be the big event it has always been”, the student says. “IST's Arraial will continue to be on top of the list for all of Lisbon's students.” Even though, as Luís Prior points out, the Arraial has lost some of the importance it had in Lisbon's university party scene, it is still a must-go event for many students. “Usually [IST's Arraial] is different from all other academic parties. It's not usually a very commercial party, it has always been a bit different from other university parties.” The idea for the future is to “preserve that and make sure visitors have fun and bring their friends”. Their love for the cause guides their work throughout the year. “I think that what motivates us is the desire to see such an event happen. A passion for the event, for organizing stuff for the sake of the Association”, Guilherme Lopes explains. Luís Prior stresses the challenges they face, with many things to improve:

Centenas de novos alunos, nacionais e internacionais, atravessam a alameda da escola e dão os primeiros passos naquela que será a sua casa nos próximos tempos. É (também) para ajudar na transição e nos primeiros passos que o NAPE – Núcleo de Apoio ao Estudante existe. “Nós somos sempre o primeiro contacto para todos os alunos, e mostramos que se houver alguma questão, se precisarem de alguma coisa, podem falar connosco”, explica Duarte Donas-Boto, que coordena as atividades. O NAPE tem como missão “promover a integração dos alunos do Técnico, apoiando todo o tipo de iniciativas que contribuam para um envolvimento efetivo da comunidade académica da escola, bem como divulgar o Técnico junto dos meios estudantis”. Para garantir que os objetivos são atingidos, foram criados, entre outros, dois programas que facilitam a integração dos alunos e divulgam o Técnico junto de escolas secundárias.

EN In September, as has been happening for over a century, Técnico renews itself. Hundreds of new students, both domestic and foreign, cross Técnico's promenade and take their first steps in the facilities they will come to know well throughout the next few years. One of the reasons NAPE exists is to guide students in this transition process. “We've always been every student's first contact point, and we let them know that if they have any questions, if they need anything, we're here for them”, explains Duarte Donas-Boto, who coordinates the NAPE activities. NAPE's mission is “to foster the integration of IST students, by supporting all kinds of initiatives that contribute to the actual participation of Técnico’s academic community, and to promote Técnico amongst other student communities”. Two specific programs - among others - have been created to make sure these goals - fostering the integration of students and promoting Técnico at high schools - are achieved. The Mentoring Program was first implemented in 1995 and aims to bring students studying in the same degree

PT O Programa Mentorado foi implementado pela primeira vez em 1995 e pretende proporcionar aos alunos do mesmo curso uma maior aproximação. Isso começa logo no dia das matrículas no Técnico. “Queremos que os alunos sejam recebidos por colegas do mesmo curso, que tenham alguma experiência no Técnico, para eliminar a diferença e garantir o seu acolhimento”, explica Duarte Donas-Boto. “O objetivo é criar uma grande dinâmica entre cada ano, mas também dentro de cada curso.” Todos os alunos do Técnico, do segundo ao quinto ano, podem inscrever-se para ser mentores – de alunos do primeiro ano, segundo ciclo ou intercâmbio. Para muitos, é uma decisão fácil. “A principal motivação que têm é terem sentido a importância de ter um mentor, o papel que ele teve na sua integração e no primeiro dia do Técnico, e querem dar isto de volta. Estiveram naquele papel há muito pouco tempo e sabem a importância que o programa teve”, admite o estudante. Depois de serem recebidos por um guia do NAPE, assim que chegam ao Técnico no primeiro dia, os novos alunos são encaminhados para o seu mentor. “É logo criado um grupo com vários alunos e um mentor, que vai ajudar no processo burocrático, mostrar o campus, levá-los até à Feira dos Núcleos…” A ideia, no entanto, não é dar apoio apenas no dia das matrículas. “O que queremos garantir é que o mentor faz o acompanhamento regular do que se passa com os seus mentorandos”, afirma Duarte Donas-Boto. Para isso, ao longo do ano, os mentores têm reuniões e apresentam relatórios sobre as atividades com o seu grupo. “Tem funcionado muito bem.” Por detrás de tudo isto, está sempre presente a estrutura do NAPE. “Podíamos não existir, e os alunos safavam-se!”, brinca. “Mas notamos que, cada vez mais, as pessoas sabem que há um sítio onde podem obter informações sobre vários assuntos. É uma mais-valia, na minha opinião.” Essas informações têm, no entanto, que chegar aos ainda mais jovens, no Ensino Secundário. É nesse contexto que surge o programa Embaixadores do Técnico, criado no último ano letivo. “A ideia é levar outros alunos do Técnico, que não são guias do NAPE, às escolas secundárias, mostrar o que é o Técnico, o seu curso, o que têm feito”, explica Donas-Boto. Logo no primeiro ano do programa, houve mais de 130 inscritos. A ideia, para 2016/17, é

ter 50 embaixadores, que partilharão a responsabilidade de visitar 150 escolas ao longo do ano. Podem inscrever-se todos os alunos a partir do segundo ano. Para muitos, esta é uma oportunidade de voltar à escola onde estudaram e falar com os seus colegas sobre a sua “nova vida” universitária. Além disso, os embaixadores têm acesso a um conjunto de experiências de enriquecimento curricular, desenvolvimento de competências e criação de rede de contactos. Nas escolas, o programa tem resultado bem. “Quando vamos a uma escola secundária nota-se uma grande diferença. Muitas faculdades levam funcionários, nós só levamos alunos. A comunicação é completamente diferente. Os alunos das escolas secundárias sentem-se muito mais à vontade para colocarem perguntas a alunos das faculdades.” E o que se procura no embaixador? “Dinamismo, capacidade de comunicação e gosto por trabalhar em equipa.” Em setembro, o NAPE volta em força às atividades, e pronto para ajudar alunos e futuros alunos do Técnico. Os primeiros dias preveem-se trabalhosos: “As duas primeiras semanas de aulas são sempre um caos – toda a gente nos conhece, porque quando recebemos os novos alunos é no átrio, e dizemos que estamos ali, prontos para ajudar”. •

This information, however, must reach even younger students - high school students. It was in this context that the Técnico Ambassadors Program was created last academic year. “The idea is to send other IST students, who are not NAPE guides, to high schools, so that they can show what Técnico is all about, their degree program, what they've been doing”, Donas-Boto explains. More than 130 students signed up in the program's very first year. The idea for 2016/17 is to have 50 ambassadors who will share the responsibility of visiting 150 schools throughout the year. All second-year students can sign up. For many students, this is an opportunity to go back to the high school where they studied and talk to their former schoolmates about their “new academic life”. Moreover, ambassadors have the possibility, through various experiences, to improve their CV, develop skills and create a network. The program has been quite successful in these schools. “We notice a big difference when we go to high schools. Many universities send their employees, but we only send our students. The communication process is entirely different. High school students feel much more comfortable asking questions to college students.” What skills should an ambassador have? “They should be dynamic, have good communication skills and a passion for team work.” NAPE will start their activities in full force in September, and will once again be ready to help Técnico's current and future students. The first days are expected to be hard work: “The first two weeks are always chaotic - everybody knows us because we welcome new students in the lobby, and we tell them that we're here, ready to help”. •

It starts right on registration day at Técnico. “We want new students to be welcomed by their program colleagues, people with some IST experience, to bridge the gap and ensure that they are properly received”, Duarte Donas-Boto explains. “The goal is to create a strong dynamic within each entering class, but also within each program.” All IST students, from the second to the fifth year, can sign up to be mentors - of first year, Master’s or exchange students. For many, this is an easy decision. “Their main motivation is that they have felt the importance of having a mentor, the role that mentor had in their own integration and on their very first day at Técnico, so they want to give something back. They were in that position not so long ago and know how important the program is”, Donas-Boto acknowledges. On their first day, after being welcomed by a NAPE guide, new students are immediately sent to their mentors. “And a group is immediately created, with several students and a mentor who will guide them through the bureaucratic process, show them around the campus, take them to the Student Organisations Fair...” But there's more to the program than simply providing support on registration day. “We want to ensure that mentors assist their mentees on a regular basis”, Donas-Boto says. Throughout the year, for this reason, mentors have several meetings and submit reports on their group's activities. “It has been working very well.” NAPE's team is always present behind all of these activities. “Students would be okay if we didn't exist!”, he jokes. “But a growing number of students know that there is a place where they can obtain information on several issues. In my opinion, this is a great asset.”

EN Sci-Fi Lx, according to the organization, is “a multidisciplinary project carried out by a group of science fiction fans who want to build a convention to bring together fans and future fans of the different areas in which science fiction is present and manifests itself”. This summer the event returned for its 3rd edition - all of which took place at the Instituto Superior Técnico. For three days, the event gathers “public-oriented, social, recreational and academic activities such as literature, cinema, board and electronic games, lectures, workshops, cosplay, molecular cuisine, robotics, comic books, and many other areas”, which appeal to a public “from eight to eighty years old”, stated André Silva. The general coordinator of the event says that one of the biggest challenges is
that there isn't “an actual community” of sci-fi lovers: “There are many fans, but there is no community.” To try to take the first steps and bring together what he calls “the different trenches”, he joined a group of people and created Sci-Fi Lx. “Those who love literature are only into that subject, the ones who like movies only focus on movies; it's the same for those who love games. We want to show people what science fiction is, and bring together these different groups. We believe that from that point on they will naturally end up talking to each other”, said André Silva. One of the stars of the event is Artemis, a Star Trek bridge simulation video game, which is always crowded. “Each person controls a position and ultimately chaos is generated... This game is very descriptive of Sci-Fi Lx's spirit. Even the people least likely to play video games sit there and play, and the problem is getting them to leave.” But there are other popular activities: the NFIST (Técnico’s Physics Student Group) circus is one of them. “For an outsider, it ends up sounding a lot like science fiction”, said André Silva. “We really want to call attention to the different areas where science fiction is present, we want to play with the concept...” What’s to come in 2017 is not certain yet, but the coordinator ensures that he will “do everything possible” to return to Técnico. “We have been at Técnico for three years now, and I hope we will be there for a fourth. It is not easy to find a place that is able to accommodate this multidisciplinary project”, said André Silva. •

PT O Sci-Fi Lx, segundo a organização, é “um projeto multidisciplinar levado a cabo por um conjunto de aficionados de ficção científica que pretendem construir uma convenção que reúna fãs e futuros fãs das diferentes áreas em que a ficção científica está presente e se manifesta”. Teve, este verão, a sua 3.ª edição – e todas elas decorreram no Instituto Superior Técnico. Durante três dias, reúnem-se no mesmo evento “atividades de cariz público, social, lúdico e académico como literatura, cinema, jogos de mesa e eletrónicos, palestras, workshops, cosplay, cozinha molecular, robótica, banda desenhada, arte e muitas outras áreas” que apelam a um público “que vai literalmente dos oito aos oitenta”, explica André Silva. O coordenador geral do evento diz que um dos maiores desafios é o facto de não haver “propriamente uma comunidade” em torno da área: “Há muitos fãs, mas não há uma comunidade”. Para tentar dar os primeiros passos, e aproximar aquilo a que chama “os diferentes silos”, juntou-se um grupo de pessoas e criou-se o Sci-Fi Lx. “Quem gosta de literatura está só na literatura, quem gosta de cinema não sai dali, quem gosta de jogos idem. Queremos mostrar às pessoas o que é a ficção científica e aproximar estes diferentes silos. Acreditamos que a partir daí eles acabam por falar naturalmente uns com os outros”, afirma André Silva. Uma das estrelas do evento é o Artemis, um videojogo de simulação da ponte do Star Trek, sempre lotado. “Cada pessoa controla um posto e acaba por se gerar um caos… Esse jogo é muito descritivo do espírito que tem o Sci-Fi Lx. Mesmo as pessoas mais adversas a videojogos sentam-se ali e o problema é arrancá-las de lá.” Mas há outras atividades que fazem sucesso: o circo do NFIST – Núcleo de Física do Técnico é um deles. “Para quem é de fora, aquilo acaba por soar muito a ficção científica”, explica André Silva. “Nós queremos mesmo dar espaço às diferentes áreas onde a ficção científica tem presença, queremos brincar com o conceito…” Para 2017 ainda não há certezas, mas o coordenador garante que fará “o possível” para voltar ao Técnico. “Já são três anos aqui no Técnico, e espero que sejam quatro. Não é fácil encontrar um sítio capaz de acomodar esta multidisciplinaridade”, resume. •

EN Verão na ULisboa, an initiative whose purpose is to provide basic and secondary education students with the opportunity to explore and experience the rhythm and spirit of academic life in its several institutions, returned to IST in late June and early July. While the first week focused on 7th to 9th grade students, the second week was dedicated to students who will start secondary education this academic year. That was the week Samuel Ramos – a guide from the Student Support Unit (NAPE) - chose to be a monitor. “It was my first experience as a monitor. Applications were open, I submitted my application and it was approved. I thought, on the one hand, that it was a chance to improve my CV. On the other hand, it was also attractive from a financial point of view”, said the Alameda campus electrical and computer engineering student. “In the end I was surprised about how great the week ended up being; it was much better than I expected.” For five jam-packed days, young students at the Alameda Campus took part in a program titled “Design your Future at Técnico”, exploring 13 different activities pertaining to several engineering areas, while students at the Taguspark Campus participated in a program called “From Smart Cars to Video Games: Experiencing Technology“, and joined several activities related to information and communication technology. For Inês and Matilde, both aged 14, it’s not the first time at such events. They had already participated in IST's Alameda program in 2015, and decided to give it another go. “I think that Verão na ULisboa gives us an opportunity to get in touch with the academic spirit and find out more about what our future could be like”, says Inês. “Choosing to spend a week at Técnico was not a difficult decision - my whole family studied here, and I'd like to do the same, as a way to honour them. Last year I realized that this is an area that I like, and I wanted to find out exactly what I want to do." But even at the

PT O Verão na ULisboa, uma iniciativa da Universidade de Lisboa que pretende proporcionar aos alunos do Ensino Básico e Secundário a oportunidade de conhecer e experimentar o ritmo e o espírito da vida académica nas várias escolas, voltou ao Técnico no final de junho e início de julho. Depois de uma primeira semana reservada aos alunos do 7.º ao 9.º ano do Ensino Básico, a segunda semana de atividades foi preenchida com alunos que, no próximo ano, estarão no Ensino Secundário. Foi essa a semana que Samuel Ramos, guia do NAPE, escolheu para ser monitor. “Foi a minha primeira vez como monitor. Surgiu a oportunidade para me candidatar, fi-lo e consegui entrar. Achei que, por um lado, fazia currículo; por outro, do ponto de vista financeiro também era aliciante”, explica o estudante de Engenharia Eletrotécnica e de Computadores na Alameda. “No final, acabei por ficar muito surpreendido pelo prazer que acabei por tirar da semana, foi muito mais do que estava à espera.” Durante cinco dias totalmente preenchidos, os jovens na Alameda participaram no programa “Projeta o teu Futuro no Técnico”, experimentando 13 atividades diferentes de várias áreas da Engenharia, e no Taguspark, em “Dos Carros Inteligentes aos Videojogos: Vem Viver a Tecnologia”, desenvolveram atividades ligadas às Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação. Inês e Matilde, ambas com 14 anos, são repetentes nestas andanças. Já no ano passado tinham participado nas atividades do Técnico, na Alameda, e resolveram voltar. “Acho que estar no Verão na ULisboa nos dá uma oportunidade para conhecermos o espírito académico e sabermos mais sobre o que pode ser o nosso futuro”, explica Inês. “Escolher o Técnico para passar uma semana, para mim, não foi difícil – toda a minha família estudou cá, e eu gostava de fazer o mesmo, como uma forma de os homenagear. Depois do ano passado, percebi que é um campo de que gosto, e quis descobrir exatamente o que quero fazer.” Mas, mesmo no final da semana, ainda não sabe: “Já descartei algumas áreas, mas ainda há muitas opções”. Matilde veio “arrastada” pela colega e amiga, no ano passado. “Não sabia que este programa existia, mas a Inês disse-me e decidi experimentar. O Técnico foi uma escolha óbvia, porque quero mesmo seguir Engenharia.” Aeroespacial, acrescenta: “Adoro o Espaço, adoro foguetões, é uma área que sempre me fascinou”. Não espanta, por isso, que a sua atividade preferida tenha sido precisamente a da área, onde os estudantes tiveram a oportunidade de construir um foguete

PT lançado em plena alameda do Técnico na tarde de sexta-feira – apesar de ter gostado de tudo. “Gostei ainda mais das atividades deste ano, e já tinha gostado muito no ano passado, é a prova de que isto é bom.” Para as duas, uma das grandes vantagens deste programa é a participação dos estudantes do Técnico. “Sentimo-nos mais à vontade com eles do que nos sentiríamos com professores”, assegura Matilde. Inês acrescenta: “Além disso, eles têm uma posição mais próxima de nós, estiveram onde estamos há menos tempo, e podemos fazer-lhes perguntas sobre tudo”. Samuel Ramos concorda que o contacto com os jovens estudantes é uma das coisas mais importantes que retirou da semana. Além disso, garante que os monitores “melhoram as suas capacidades de comunicação e liderança”. “No final, do que gostei mais foi dos meus miúdos”, diz, com um sorriso. “Foi o mais produtivo e gratificante, vê-los a criar laços.” O estudante diz que, com 15 anos – a idade que tinham todos os membros do seu grupo – teria adorado uma experiência do género. “Acho que muitos deles ficam a perceber um bocadinho melhor o que é a Engenharia, outros ficam a perceber melhor algumas áreas específicas. Houve algumas atividades bastante esclarecedoras.” E há coisas a melhorar? “Há sempre aspetos a melhorar”, diz. Nada que tenha tido impacto para Inês e Matilde, que só gostavam de poder ficar mais tempo. “Acho que o Verão na ULisboa, pelo menos para o Ensino Secundário, devia ter duas semanas. Há muitas pessoas indecisas com áreas – eu, por exemplo, gosto de Engenharia, mas também de Economia, e gostava de fazer uma semana aqui e outra no ISEG [Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão]”, diz Inês. Matilde concorda, mas aproveitaria o tempo de outra forma: “Sem dúvida, acho que tentaria repetir e fazer duas semanas aqui”. Se tudo correr bem, as duas estarão cá em 2017. O Verão na ULisboa é organizado pela Universidade de Lisboa e, no Técnico, as atividades são organizadas pelo NAPE – Núcleo de Apoio ao Estudante, com o apoio de vários núcleos de alunos, que são essenciais para o sucesso do programa. •

They were in our position not so long ago and we can ask them questions about everything.” Samuel Ramos agrees that connecting with the young students was one of the most important things the week gave him. Furthermore, he says, monitors “improve their communication and leadership skills”. “In the end, what I liked the most were my kids”, he says with a grin. “Seeing them bond was the most productive and rewarding experience.” He says that he would have loved a similar experience when he was 15 - the age of all the students in his group. “I think that many of them now understand engineering a little better, and some have a better understanding of specific areas. There were some very enlightening activities.”
Is there anything that should be improved? “There is always room for improvement”, he says. Nothing bothered Inês and Matilde, who only wish they could have stayed longer. “I think that Verão na ULisboa should last two weeks, at least for high school students. Many students are unsure about the areas they should choose - I, for one, love engineering, but I also like economics, and I would have enjoyed spending a week here and another week at ISEG [School of Business and Economics]”, Inês says. Matilde agrees, but she would use her time differently: “Absolutely, I think I'd try to do it again and spend two weeks here”. If all goes well, both students will be here in 2017. Verão na ULisboa is organized by Universidade de Lisboa, while Técnico's activities are organized by the Student Support Unit (NAPE), with the support of several groups of students, which are essential to the success of the program. •

EN end of the week, she still doesn't know. "I've discarded some areas, but there are still many options to choose from.” Matilde was “dragged” there by her schoolmate and friend last year. “I didn't know this program existed, but Inês told me about it and I decided to give it a try. Técnico was an obvious choice because I really want to pursue engineering.” Aerospace engineering, she adds: “I love space, I love rockets; this area has always fascinated me.” No wonder, therefore even though she liked everything - that her favourite activity involved aerospace engineering, an activity where students were given the chance to build a rocket and launch it from the heart of IST's promenade on Friday afternoon. “I liked this year's activities even more, and I had already enjoyed them a lot last year, so this proves how good it was.” For both Matilde and Inês, one of the program's major advantages is the participation of IST students. “We feel more comfortable with them than we would

EN Lisbon is becoming a city where science and technology can be experienced every day, and there are several events throughout the year where these topics are the main stars.
One of them is PubhD, a monthly event where three PhD students from different areas - from science to humanities, from arts to engineering - explain their work in the informal setting of a bar in Bairro Alto (Bibo Bar Lisbon). The event reached Lisbon late last year, brought here by Sérgio Pereira, who had attended the initiative in Nottingham, England. “I attended an event, I found it very interesting and immediately talked to the organizers about bringing a similar initiative to Lisbon”, he explains. “We have several goals. On one hand, for researchers, this is an opportunity to train their public communication skills and acquire new perspectives on their own research work. From the audience's point of view, we want to give them the opportunity to discover areas they didn't even know existed”, Sérgio Pereira says. “And of course, we want to reach an audience that doesn't usually attend university lectures. We are in a bar, in Bairro Alto, and that helps.” After the creation of Lisbon's PubhD, two new PubhD initiatives emerged in the country: in Évora and Minho. For all of them, the priority is to challenge PhD students to explain their work. Young crowds, however, have many reasons for attending these events. “They can get to know something about current research in their area of interest, at the most advanced level, and also ask questions about the life of a PhD student, for example. On the other hand, they are exposed to the need to communicate in public and can acquaint themselves with the need to communicate science”, he says. The next Lisbon PubhD will take place on September 14, at 7.30 pm. For some specific scientific areas, there are other event options: such is the case of Nights at the Observatory, a science dissemination activity organized by the Institute for Astrophysics and Space Sciences (IA). João Retrê is the coordinator of IA's Science Communication Group, and he explains that their goal is “to offer a premium quality venue where everyone can learn more about astrophysics and space sciences, bringing lay folks closer to this area”. “It's an area that has always aroused people's curiosity and imagination”, he points out. The activity premiered in late 2009, and it has been growing exponentially in recent years. From an early average of 30 visitors per session, they grew to hit the record figure of 370 visitors in July. “Over the years, these Nights at the Observatory have acted as a link between many researchers and the public”, he explains. Each session consists of a lecture and, if weather conditions permit, astronomical observations with a telescope. The next edition will take place on October 1st at the Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium. •

PT Lisboa começa a ser, cada vez mais, uma cidade onde a Ciência e a Tecnologia podem ser vividos no dia a dia e, ao longo do ano, são vários os eventos abertos ao público onde esses tópicos são a estrela principal. Um deles é o PubhD, um evento mensal em que três estudantes de doutoramento de áreas diferentes, das Ciências às Humanidades, das Artes às Engenharias, explicam o seu trabalho no ambiente informal de um bar no Bairro Alto (Bibo Bar Lisboa). O evento chegou a Lisboa no final do ano passado, pela mão de Sérgio Pereira, que assistiu à iniciativa em Nottingham, na Inglaterra. “Fui assistir a um evento, achei muito interessante e falei logo com os organizadores para fazer uma iniciativa idêntica em Lisboa”, explica. “Temos vários objetivos. Por um lado, para os investigadores, é uma oportunidade de praticar a comunicação em público e ganhar novas perspetivas sobre a sua própria investigação. Do lado do público, queremos dar-lhes a oportunidade de conhecer áreas que as pessoas nem sabiam que existiam”, diz Sérgio Pereira. “E, claro, queremos chegar a um público que não costuma ir às palestras nas universidades. Estamos num bar, no Bairro Alto, e isso ajuda.” Depois da criação do PubhD de Lisboa, surgiram dois novos no país: em Évora e no Minho. Em todos eles, a prioridade é ter estudantes de doutoramento a explicar o que fazem. Os mais novos, no entanto, têm todas as razões para estar presentes. “Podem tirar algum conhecimento sobre o que está a ser investigado na sua área de interesse, ao nível mais avançado, e também fazer questões sobre o que é a vida do estudante de doutoramento, por exemplo. Por outro lado, são expostos à necessidade de comunicar em público e familiarizarem-se com a necessidade de comunicar a Ciência”, resume. O próximo PubhD de Lisboa é no dia 14 de setembro, às 19.30 horas. Nalgumas áreas específicas, há outras opções: é o caso das Noites no Observatório, uma atividade de divulgação de Ciência organizada pelo Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço (IA). João Retrê é o coordenador do Grupo de Comunicação de Ciência do IA, e explica que o que se quer é “oferecer um espaço privilegiado onde todos podem aprender mais sobre Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço, aproximando esta área do cidadão”. “É uma área que sempre despertou a curiosidade e imaginação das pessoas”, lembra. A atividade surgiu no final de 2009, e nos últimos anos tem estado a crescer exponencialmente. De uma média de 30 pessoas por sessão no início, chegou-se ao número recorde de 370 pessoas

PT “O Instituto deveria possuir para uso dos seus alunos pelo menos um campo destinado a jogos ao ar livre,… um balneário, uma sala de ginástica (…)”, dizia Alfredo Bensaude, fundador e primeiro diretor do Instituto Superior Técnico, nas suas Notas Histórico-Pedagógicas, publicadas em 1922. Quase um século depois, continua a ser preocupação da escola garantir que os alunos têm o espaço, o tempo e a possibilidade de praticar atividade física. Muitas opções são disponibilizadas pela Associação dos Estudantes do Instituto Superior Técnico (AEIST), que tem sob a sua alçada diversas equipas de modalidades coletivas e individuais, abertas aos estudantes. Do Futebol ao Râguebi, passando pelo Ténis de Mesa, as opções são variadas. Outros grupos, no entanto, têm surgido espontaneamente: é o caso do IST Run Lisboa, criado em 2014 por três estudantes – José Mateus, João Vinagre e Tiago Gomes – para promover a prática de corrida (ou do “running”, como costuma dizer-se). “Pensámos ‘isto hoje em

EN “IST students should have at least one field for outdoor games, (...) a locker room, a gymnastics room” - these were the words of IST founder and first director Alfredo Bensaude in his ‘Historical and Pedagogical Notes’, published in 1922. Almost a century later, it is still a school priority to provide students with the facilities and time for physical activities. AEIST (IST Students’ Association) provides many different options, including several individual and team sports, which are open to students. From football to rugby and table tennis, there are many choices available. But other groups have emerged spontaneously, such as IST Run Lisboa, which was created in 2014 by three students José Mateus, João Vinagre e Tiago Gomes - to promote running activities. “We thought: it's so easy nowadays... we go running and lots of other people go running as well... it would be cool to join everyone in a group”, José Mateus explains. They didn't need much time to do it: a few days later, their “small thing” was set up just outside the Pavilhão de Civil.

PT dia é tão fácil… vamos a correr, passamos por imensa malta a correr… seria giro juntarmo-nos’”, explica José Mateus. Não precisaram de muito tempo: uns dias depois, a “brincadeira” que surgiu à porta do Pavilhão de Civil, estava montada. “Fiz o logótipo, inventei o nome, criei a matriz do grupo: IST porque é do Técnico, Run porque é corrida e Lisboa porque sentimos sempre um carinho especial por Lisboa, e o Técnico é de Lisboa”, diz o estudante de Engenharia Civil. O grupo é, no entanto, aberto a todos os interessados: “Temos muita gente, por exemplo de outras faculdades de Lisboa, a correr connosco”. Desde o início foi definida uma única regra para o grupo – que é dinamizado através de uma página na rede social Facebook: os treinos começam e acabam na “zebra” em frente ao Pavilhão Central (Alameda). Tudo o resto veio daí. Os percursos têm, habitualmente, entre 8 e 12 quilómetros, e há uma grande preocupação em “visitar Lisboa”. “Temos o cuidado de procurar que as pessoas conheçam Lisboa, conheçam a cidade. Eles aprendem que correr também pode ser uma maneira de se divertirem e irem dar um passeio”, explica. Os treinos decorrem à terça e quinta-feira, às 19 horas, e José Mateus garante que, a não ser que haja algum problema físico, depois de oito sessões, “qualquer pessoa está a correr 10 quilómetros”. “Não é em vinte minutos ou meia hora, mas têm uma autonomia de 10 quilómetros – e a partir do Técnico, com essa distância, fazes Lisboa toda.” Algo que é muito apreciado pelos alunos deslocados, nacionais ou internacionais. No fundo, o objetivo “é que as pessoas tenham um espaço em que se sentem bem, independentemente da condição física, e onde conseguem praticar o seu desporto e dar umas gargalhadas”. Para quem prefere outras modalidades, há mais opções. Além das infraestruturas do Estádio Universitário de Lisboa (EUL), abertas a toda a comunidade escolar, o próprio Técnico oferece outra opção para quem pratica “ocasionalmente”: o aluguer (gratuito) de bicicletas. Duarte Donas-Boto, do Núcleo de Apoio ao Estudante (NAPE), explica que o programa “resultou da aposta do Técnico na mobilidade sustentável”. “A ideia é disponibilizar bicicletas à comunidade escolar, para que durante um dia possam experimentar o seu percurso casa- Técnico, Técnico-casa e arredores.”
Criado em setembro de 2015, o programa foi muito bem recebido, sobretudo por alunos de intercâmbio (muitos deles habituados à utilização de bicicletas no dia a dia) e grupos que, “em dias de bom tempo”, se juntam para dar pequenos
passeios. Para utilizar as bicicletas, basta dirigir-se à receção do Pavilhão Central (Alameda) e falar com o guia do NAPE presente. Atualmente, estão disponíveis 11 bicicletas, mas o número vai aumentar rapidamente. E no futuro talvez cheguem outras opções: bicicletas eléctricas e alugueres por períodos mais alargados. •
The sessions take place every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 pm, and José Mateus promises that, unless there is some physical problem, “anyone can run for 10 kilometres” after eight sessions. “Not in twenty minutes or half an hour, but they will have a 10-kilometre autonomy - and from IST, with that distance, you can cover the entire city of Lisbon”. This is highly appreciated by non-native students, both Portuguese and foreigners. Basically, the goal “is that students will have a place where they can feel good, regardless of their physical condition, and where they can practice their sport and have fun”. For those who prefer other sports, there are other options available. In addition to the Estádio Universitário de Lisboa (EUL), whose facilities are open to the entire student community, IST offers something for those who only exercise “occasionally”: (free) bike rentals.
Duarte Donas-Boto, a member of the Student Support Unit (NAPE), explains that the program “is the result of IST's investment in sustainable mobility”. “The idea is to provide bicycles to the student community, so that students can experience their home-IST/IST-home and surroundings route for one day.” Created in September 2015, the program was very well received, especially by exchange students (many of whom use bicycles in their everyday life) and groups that come together for small tours “when the weather is good”. To use these bikes, just head to the Pavilhão Central (Alameda) reception desk and talk to the NAPE guide. Currently there are 11 bikes available, but that number will increase soon. And other options may be available in the future: electric bicicles and longerterm rentals. •

EN “I made the logo, came up with the name, created the group's matrix: IST because it comes from Técnico, Run because it is all about running, and Lisboa because we've always felt a special affection for Lisbon, and because IST is located in Lisbon”, the civil engineering student says. But anyone is free to join the group: “We have a lot of people from other Lisbonbased universities, for instance, running with us”. Since the beginning they've set one single rule for the group (which they promote through a Facebook page): the running sessions begin and end at the pedestrian crossing outside the Pavilhão Central (Alameda). Everything else emerged from that. The sessions usually stretch between 8 and 12 kilometres, and there's a strong focus on “visiting Lisbon”. “We try to make sure that people get to know Lisbon, get to know the city. They find out that running can also be a way to have fun and explore the city”, he explains.
