She also reminded that we all have something in common—we are all human beings created by God. She furthered that people should engage in the promotion of tourism and culture of the Philippines. “Raising awareness…that we all have differences, but let us all remember what we have in common…let us remember that we need to promote unity and camaraderie…these may be little things for me but those little things can bring great differences,” Alcones said when asked about his contribution to foster diversity, understanding and reduction of bias. The Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges - Culture and Arts Fest (STRASUC-CAF) has always been a much-awaited event. Streamers and stalls of all sizes and colors decorate the halls of the campus. The starry-eyed audience waits in the gymnasium, ready to cheer for their respective schools. This year, Laguna State Polytechnic University has been deemed the host for the 4th STRASUC-CAF where delegates from different state universities and colleges (SUCs) are to stay at the San Pablo City Campus during the entirety of the event. During their idle time, the contenders are expected to get out of their respective headquarters and get together with those from other universities. This, however, was not observed. Instead, the delegates chose to stay in their respective rooms, missing the opportunity to engage in camaraderie. Isn’t that the whole point of these event? These activities are conducted, not only to have a friendly competition between SUCs, but also to strengthen the bonds between the students amidst their cultural diversity. unity, the three-day event included a said Fellowship Night for the delegates to form new connections. Sadly, the program took a complete three-sixty as the university gymnasium wasn’t even half-filled. The live band performed in front of a crowd of hardwood floors and blinding stage lights. The term “fellowship” wasn’t fully able to live up to its name. Students, especially the delegates, should be fully aware of the event’s true meaning and purpose: to unify. That in competitions, not only the medals and certificates are the prizes, but all the more the memories, experiences, lessons, and new formed bonds. Going home with a gold medallion around your neck and a plaque in hand is all fun and overwhelming, but without a new friend to message back or memories to recall, will this STRASUC experience feel real after returning to the normal student life? ***
