Delayed Birds Get the Scorn Late opening of the program during an event is so common in the Philippine sociocultural setting, including schools. This habit has even become a norm, dubbing it “the Filipino time” but one that should not be tolerated when proper planning can be done in advance. Last October 11, the university-wide Culture and the Arts Festival kicked off at the San Pablo City Campus (SPCC). That was the resumption of its first face-to-

face activities after two years into the coronavirus pandemic. While lapses were inevitable, the major delay and confusion were too much to handle. Two days prior to the event, the program provided to the departments concerned—including the Office of the Student Publication— still had few correction. On the day of the program, delegates from the four campuses of the Laguna State Polytechnic University waited for

“And just as how humans use art to live fully, art, too, needs humans for it to live and not just survive.”

Every year, several festivals are observed to commemorate Filipino culture—an attempt to not let it fade away with time. But are celebrations enough to prolong the life of the alreadyalienated culture? Our university, which is a state-run institution, values culture not only through words but actions. The recently concluded Culture and the Arts Festival is an example. By showcasing talent such as in kundiman, folk dance, and

charcoal art, among others, what we know as merely historical (or “sinauna”) is still being practiced in our present time. While this effort is commendable, we must not stop there. Ask ourselves: Are we celebrating our culture—only once a year—just for fun? Or are we seeking it to become part of our daily lives? If we prefer the former, let’s keep things as they are. But if we want to embed culture in our social existence, then what we do is far from enough. To determine the next steps that we should take, consider these three im-

more than an hour before it officially started. Nobody knew what to do since no order came from the authority. To add insult to injury, the guest speaker did not confirm her commitment. According to Frianne Shane Bundalian, a secondyear BS Electronics Engineering from SPCC, "Since the opening program started late, we are not sure when the event will surely start. Walang kasiguruhan—kaya na-late ako sa sinalihan ko (Vocal Solo—Kundiman). I didn't know na ako na lang pala ang contestant na [hinihintay]. And medyo nawala rin ang iba sa momentum since na-adjust nga yung program. “Sa program, nakalagay sa Photography Contest is 8:00 AM, then sa 1:00 PM meron ulit [na] Photography Contest. Dito pa [lang,] nalito na kami ng adviser and coordinators namin sa event… sinunod namin yung 1:00 PM na nasa program… minutes of searching later, sinabihan na kami na stand-by na [lang] daw muna kasi yung [judges] ay wala [yata] or late pa. Then [nag-start] kami [nang] 2:40 PM and natapos kami [nang] 3:40 PM,” Kobie Oracion, a fourth-year BS Information Technology portant aspects of culture and society: First is modernity. Almost everybody is heading toward a more modern future that leaves our culture stuck in bookshelves. Thus, it is enemy number one. The second is dynamism. Social, political, and cultural heritage are always changing. From a predetermined caste system, we are now divided by more complex social stratification—so is culture. From having our usual timpalak sa bigkasan, Buwan ng Wika celebration now incorporates spoken word poetry. The essence remains the same, but the execution is different. Last is integration. Our country has no single culture. Having a “regionalist” attitude even during the precolonial times, our country is a macrocosm of its archipelagic states and ethnic 05 backgrounds. But the...

from Sta. Cruz Campus, lamented. But for Rhea Arquilita, a second-year BS Food Technology and a student journalist from Los Banos Campus, "[A]yos lang [sa’kin...] kasi mas maraming time na [nakapagpahinga] yung mga tao and us—campus press— and to know each other [na rin].” If compared to the streak of achievements the campus had enjoyed, the issue on punctuality may be relatively small. Yet, however weak it may sound, the observance of time speaks something to the quality of service our university is taking pride of. With tardiness and incoordination, unless pruned early, there is no telling how—sooner or later— they will be ingrained in our system. Winners in the said festival are set to represent the university in the regional level this coming November. And if they compete under wings that fly late, these birds—by way of metaphor—can neither catch the worm nor bring the bacon home, but they will return instead with their beaks hung low in shame.

SAN PABLO CITY CAMPUS— President Mario R. Briones welcomed the representatives of the Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) at the Culture and the Arts Festival (CAF) on Oct. 11. “It gives me immense joy seeing all of you dealing with excitement and pride as we gathered for the university-wide CAF,” Pres. “However, at the end of the day, we stand as one strong united group of artists, always ready to put our best foot forward for regional and national competitions where we never fail to secure places,” the university president emphasized. Dr. Eden C. Callo, VicePresident for Academic Affairs, declared the official opening of the two-day festival attended by the participating campuses from Sta. They will join other winners who will serve as delegates of the LSPU in the STRASUC—CAF.

Performers of the Sta. Cruz Campus (SCC) danced their way out to snatch the title for the street dance category in the Culture and the Arts Festival, Oct. 12. Notable features of each performance include Siniloan Campus’s classic Pinoy rap and hip-hop hits, San Pablo City Campus’s usage of Philippine colors through bandanas and paint, Sta. Cruz Campus’s masking themselves with a red bandana, and Los Banos Campus’s quick transitions and formations. “Masaya po kami dahil kami po ang nanalo para maipakita pa po namin ang talent namin sa ibang lugar,” Jhon Roniel Cao, one of the members of the Sta. Cruz’s street dance team, expressed his joy and thoughts on winning. Cao also stated that they will double their effort for the upcoming Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges—Culture and the Arts Festival at the Ba08 tangas State University

01 Meanwhile, Lajara sealed most of the special awards except for the Best in Long Gown. In the question-andanswer portion, Barroga emphasized the word “negative” when asked what he might remove from the dictionary, believing that this kind of person’s view impacts everyone’s life. “We, as Filipinos, experience a lot of negativity, and it [affects] our lives. I just want to always choose what makes me happy—and that is positivity,” he said. On the other hand, Lajara defined her unique identity in comparison to the past Ms. LSPU. That she is a woman who assures comfort to the students of the university. She also addressed that women are evolving and getting empowered nowadays. Maria Angela Eusebio (Los Banos) and Jomel Dela Torre (Sta. Cruz) won first runner-up. Hannah Grace Borinaga (Sta. Cruz) and Carl Subijano (San Pablo City) were declared second, followed by Trixia Mae Mendiola (Siniloan) as the third. However, Rafael Gonzales of the Los Banos Campus was not able to walk in the pageant due to a sprain.

...differences made our collective culture even more beautiful. The mixing-up of Spanish and Filipino cultures made both survive the test of time. Should the recitation of Pasyon have been invented without the propagation of the Spanish influence through the church, it would not survive the American and Japanese powers. These three aspects will help us understand what our focus should be. If we continue being complacent with celebrating our culture only once annually, then we are nothing more than “cultural termites.” We paper over the cracks but whose interior, slowly deteriorating. Use culture not as a face mask to cover that it is dying, changing, and evolving. The Filipino culture—ours—is not a simple fashion show to be flaunted overnight. It needs to flourish for it to live. And just as how humans use art to live fully, art, too, needs humans for it to live and not just survive.
