In August 2012 Joe Watkins introduced the Pthreads extension for PHP. Since then it is possible to use threads for asynchronous data handling in PHP as well. Now the extension is in a very promising state so it is definitely a look worth. We´re using the extension for a next generation php infrastructure called appserver.io. It is not a webserver like Apache or nginx, nor a Timer Service or Message Queue. It is all of them and much more in one extremely powerful bundle. And it is completely written in PHP enabling PHP developers to adapt appserver.io to their specific needs with no additional coding language - just PHP!
