A Child’s Garden of Dreams

I. There is a desert on the moon where the dreamer sinks so deeply into the ground that she reaches hell.

II. A drunken woman falls into the water and comes out renewed and sober.

III. A horde of small animals frightens the dreamer. The animals increase to a tremendous size, and one of them devours the little girl.

IV. A drop of water is seen as it appears when looked at through a microscope. The girl sees that the drop is full of tree branches. This portrays the origin of the world.

V. An ascent into heaven where pagan dances are being celebrated; and a descent into hell where angels are doing good deeds.

Inspired bySouth American liturgical chants, Intrada1631combines the infamous hymns of Franciscan missionary Juan Pérez Bocanegra with an impending drums of a funeral march to create an impactful, modern masterpiece.

IsaRose

New age composer Caroline Shaw used her unique skills to create a neoclassic soundscape through a mixture of modern orchestration with antiquarian forms and harmonies. By juxtaposing modern text with 18th century poetry, Shaw created a song trilogy for mezzosoprano and string orchestrathatintertwines thebeauty of arias from the Baroque period with the modernity of 21st century prose. Cody Edgerton transcribed the work for solo soprano and small wind ensemble in 2022.

Colors

Written for Belgian trombonist Ben Haemhouts, Colors is a compilation of the vast range human emotions associated with certain hues. Yellow creates an inspiring and stimulating experience that guides the listener to the light.

AChild’sGardenofDreams

Derived from a case study in Carl Jung’s A Man and His Symbols, A Child’sGardenofDreamscreates a uniquely reactive soundscape that encapsulates the dreams of a young girl reaching the end of her life. Each movement depicts a selected dream that she wrote in her journal; from a wild, gruesome chase to an ascent into the heavens, the piece allows the listener to embark on an emotional journey on the duality of life.

Instrumental Music Studies at ATU:

The ATU Department of Music serves approximately 175 undergraduate music majors seeking either the Bachelor of Arts in Music or the Bachelor of Music Education degrees. The Tech Band program was created by Marvin Williamson in 1913, and developed into a nationally recognized tradition of excellence by Emeritus Directors of Bands Gene Witherspoon and Hal D. Cooper.

Dr. Christopher Anderson created the Symphonic Wind Ensemble in 2011, and the program currently consists of six ensembles serving hundreds of students per semester. Active in the area of commissioning new music and working closely with world renowned composers since 1950, Tech Bands have enjoyed relationships with Karel Husa, Vincent Persichetti, FrancisMcBeth, and continue to engage the finest composers to perform established and world premiere manuscripts. The Arkansas Tech University Symphonic Wind Ensemble has toured the country and appeared at state, regional, and national conferences of the CDBNA, ABA, ASBOA, and many others. Alumni of Tech Bands are now teachers, performers, and professionals in and out of the field of music around the globe.
